Local Notes:

Laurens Raiders:

  • Former Raider Great Charles Peterson Dies… Former Laurens Raider standout Charles Peterson died yesterday at the age of 46 after battling the COVID-19 virus since mid-August… Peterson was a member of the Raider 1991 State Championship football team which went 10-0 and outscored their opponents 286-20… He was also a member of the Raiders 1990 State Baseball Championship team where he played centerfield and had a lot of pop in his bat… He was drafted in the first round of the MLB draft by the Pirates where he played for 5 years reaching the AAA level… Since the Pirates he has worked recently in the St. Louis Cardinal organization and was involved in scouting… At the time of his death he was a volunteer football coach for the Spring Valley Vikings where his son is a member of the football team… For more information in the State Newspaper about him click here.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • V-Football: Crusaders 44 – Saints 6… The Laurens Academy Crusaders played host to the Clarendon Hall Saints last Friday night out at Todd Kirk Field and after putting 30 unanswered points on the scoreboard in the first half and racking up 246 yards of total offense in the first half while holding the Saints to just 11 yards tolled on to take a 44-6 win their first of the season.
    • The Crusaders won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half… The defense then held the Saints to a 3 and out taking over at the Saints 43 yard line… Six plays later Thomas Lowry carried it in from the yard line and the Crusaders added the 2-point PAT to make it 8-0 with 8:45 l4eft in the first quarter.
    • The Crusaders then held the Saints to another 3 and out and after the punt and a personal foul of the Saints took over at their own 44 yard line… This time they moved the ball down the field mostly passing and scoring with 4:14 left in the first quarter on an 8 yard pass from Lory to Jonas Smith… Cal Robertson added the 2-point conversion to make it 16-0
    • The Crusaders were not able to recover an onside kick attempt and the Saints took over on the Crusader 36 yard line after a short return by the Saints… On fourth down the Saints quarterback was sacked by Diamonte Grant to stop the threat and the Crusaders took over on their own 36 yard line… Ten plays later with 10:57 left in the half Lowry hit Grant with a 13 yard scoring pass… The 2-point conversion failed and the Crusaders led 22-0
    • The Saints managed to pick up a first down during their next possession but the drive stalled and they were forced to punt… The Crusaders took over on their own 23 yard line and mainly working on the ground scored with 1:59 in the half when Lowry again connected with Grant this time on a 29 yard pass… Clarence Bertoli carried the ball in for the 2-point conversion and the Crusaders led 30-0.
    • That was the score at the half as neither team could mount an offense in spite of Brett Young recovering a Saint fumble with about a minute left in the half near midfield.
    • The Crusaders took the opening kickoff of the second half and marched down the field scoring with 9:00 left in the third quarter on an 18 yard pass from Lowry to Robertson capping a 52 yard drive in 7 plays… Bertoli added the 2-point conversion to make it 38-0.
    • The Saints again could not move the ball and the Crusaders looked like they were driving for another score when Lowry’s pass was picked off by the Saints Kylic Horton and returned for an apparent TD but a block in the back by the Saints negated it… Instead they took over on the Crusaders 35 yard line and scored 4 p lays later on a 19 yard pass but the PAT failed as the score stood 38-6 with 10:50 left in the game.
    • The Crusaders last score came at the end of the next possession when Lowry carried it in from 6 yards out but the PAT failed to make the score 44-6 with 8:34 left in the game.
    • Lowry finished the night with 111 yards rushing on 13 carries and the 2 rushing TDs… Clarence Bertoli finished the night with 70 yards rushing on 6 carries and Judson Watkins had one carry for 4 yards…. In the passing department Lowry finished with 178 yards passing… He completed 23 of 28 attempts with one interception and 4 TDs…. Diamonte Grant caught 4 passes for 58 yards and had 2 TD catches… Cal Robertson caught 3 passes for 35 yards and 1 TD, Caio Rita 3 passes for 31 yards, Clarence Bertoli 6 passes for 15 yards and Jonas Smith 3 passes for 27 yards and a TD…The Crusaders held the Saints to 92 yards of total offense and the 1 TD.
    • The Crusaders now stand 1-2 on the season and will travel Cathedral Academy this coming Friday night down in North Charleston to take on the winless Generals.

Pro Sports:

Braves… The Braves finished their 4-game series with the Nationals up in DC over the weekend… As you may recall I mentioned to you last Friday morning that they won the series opener Thursday night by a score of 7-6… For more information on the game(s) below, click on the score at the beginning.

  • Friday: Nationals 8 – Brave 7 (12)… On Friday the nationals turned the tables but it took them 12 innings to take an 8-7 win over the Braves … They led 5-o going into the fourth inning before the Braves finally put a couple of runs on the board… The Braves trailed by 3 going into the ninth inning where they played small-ball to tie the score 7-7… In the 12th inning the Nationals got the key hit from Michael Taylor to score the winning run… Marcell Ozuna did get his 14th homer of the season a solo shot in the 8the inning.
  • Saturday: Braves 2 – Nationals 1… Saturday’s game was more of a pitchers’ duel as the Braves took a 2-1 win… The Braves pitcher Ian Anderson got the start and gave up only 1 hit and no runs in 7 strong innings of action… There were no homers in the game and Ozzie Albies and Marcell Ozuna had the two Braves RBIs.
  • Sunday: Braves 8 – Nationals 4… Yesterday the Braves took the series win by defeating the Nationals 8-4 in the final game of the series… half of the Braves runs came on homers as both Adam Duvall (14) and Ozzie Albies (3) had 2-run homers in the game… The Braves are now 28-19 with about 2 weeks left in the 60 game season… They are 3.5 games ahead of the Marlins in the NL East and start a 3-game series with the Orioles in Baltimore tonight.

  • CHS Booster Club Applications Available… There is a posting now on the CHS Athletic website concerning the CHS Booster Club… In these days of COVID-19 and the possibility of reduced revenues to high school and middle school athletics caused by the pandemic, school athletic budgets will be most likely strained and the help and support of booster clubs will become even more important… To that end the CHS Booster Club invites you to join them this season… If you click here it will carry you to the CHS Athletic website where there is another link to the booster club application… Please think about helping them to make “Go Big Red” a reality.
