Clinton Police Arrest Suspect in Fatal September 1st Shooting

Clinton Police made an arrest yesterday in connection with a fatal shooting in Clinton that was discovered on Academy Street this month. Clinton Police have charged 28-year-old Marquidris Antonio “Grille” Cunningham Jr. of Clay Street, Clinton with Murder, Possession of a Weapon During a Violent Crime, Possession of a Pistol by a Convicted Felon, Possession of a Stolen Pistol and Trafficking in Cocaine.

“Grille” Cunningham is accused of shooting 29-year-old Kevern Dimon Simmons of Fountain Inn with a firearm September 1st at a location near the intersection of Washington and Lee Streets in Clinton. He reportedly had a Springfield Armory SDS 45-caliber firearm in his possession yesterday on Clay Street. He is further accused of having 40.76 grams of cocaine in his possession yesterday.

During arraignment yesterday, bond was denied on all charges. Marquidris Antonio Cunningham Jr. remained in the Johnson Detention Center.

Clinton Police state the arrest of Mr. Cunningham came with the assistance of SLED and the Laurens County Sheriff’s Office and that the investigation is still ongoing. Simmons had been shot in the arm the day before and was released the morning of his death following overnight hospitalization in Greenville. Another shooting later the night of Simmon’s fatal injuries was reported on West Main Street. This reprotedly resulted in a non-life-threatening arm injury to a woman.
