Sports Report for Monday, 10-12-2020

Local Notes:

Chapman 24 – Clinton 8… Coach Corey Fountain’s strategy last Friday night was simple…He wanted his team to make long sustained drives and finish them thus keeping the high powered Chapman offense off the field that had been averaging 47 points per game off the field… His strategy seemed to be working perfectly as the score was 0-0 at the half and 7-0 Chapman going into the final quarter of play… It worked perfectly except for the part about finishing the drives because the Red Devils got down into the Red-Zone 3 times in the first half but failed to score any points as one time they were held the Chapman 1 yard line on one of their drives… The Panthers exploded in the fourth quarter as the tired Red Devil defense gave up a 2 TDs and a field goal with one of the TDs coming on a short field after a Red Devil pass was intercepted as they took the 24-8 win… The Red Devils only TD came late in the game when the Red Devils to their credit drove 80 yards and scored with 37 seconds left on a 4 yard pass from Davis Wilson to Kimon Quarles with Wilson also carrying the ball in for the 2-point conversion making the final score 24-8

  • First Quarter…There was no score in the first quarter but Clinton did get to  the Panther one yard line before turning the ball over on downs…Chapman did not get a first down in the quarter
  • Second Quarter… Again there was no score in the second quarter but Clinton drove deep to the Panther 17 yard line where the drive ended when the Panthers picked off a Red Devil pass… Later in the quarter they made it to the Panther 13 yard line where the Panther defense stopped them… The Panthers finally picked up a first down just before the half.
  • Third Quarter… The Panther open the third quarter starting at their own 45 and driving down for the score with 8:09 left in the quarter and added the PAT to make it 7-0… There was no further scoring in the quarter and the Red Devils did not get across the 50 in the quarter.
  • Fourth Quarter… The Panthers started a drive late in the third period that ended in the fourth period with them kicking a 27 yard field goal with 10:00 minutes left in the game… Clinton was not able to move the ball on their next possession and after the punt the Panthers went 55 yards and scored again… With PAT being good, Chapman led 17-0 with 5:50 left in the game… On the third play from scrimmage, Chapman again intercepted a Clinton pass and had the ball at the Clinton 10 yard line and scored on the next play to make it 24-0 Panthers with 5:11 left to play…. To their credit, the Red Devils continued to fight and scored with 37 seconds left to play when Davis Wilson connected with Kimon Quarles for a 4 yard TD pass… Wilson also scored the 2-point conversion to make the final score 24-8.
  • Stats… Chapman finished with 243 yards of offense with 181 of them on the ground… Clinton finished with 236 yards of total offense with 165 of them coming on the ground….Chapman’s Carlos parks was the game’s leading rusher with 151 yards and 2TDs… Shy Kinard led the Red Devils rushing attack with 78 yards…. Laurens 24 – Eastside 16Last Friday both the eastside Eagles and the Laurens Raiders entered the contest with an 0-2 mark and everyone knew that someone would pick up their first win of the season but the only question was who… Good news for Raider fans as the Raiders took a 24-16 win… The Eagles put 7 on the board in the first quarter and the Raiders fist score came in the second quarter when Brian Diaz kicked a 21 yard field goal to make it 7-3 at the half… The Raiders made a couple of adjustment at the half and came back out and did something they had not done all season, score points… They struck for 14 points in the third quarter on a 25 TD pass from James Rawl to Jayden McGowen and a 31 TD pass from Rawl to Cayson Elledge… The Eagles but another score on the board in the fourth quarter and the Raiders did also Jayden McGowen broke loose for an 80 yards TD run… The Eagles’ last score came on a safety.

  • First Quarter… The only score in the first quarter came late in the quarter when the Eagles drove 69 yards and scored from 4 yards out… With the PAT the score stood 7-0 Eagles going into the second quarter
  • Second Quarter… Neither team generated much offense in the second quarter until late in the quarter when the Raiders were able to put together a drive that stalled and they had to settle for a 21 yard field goal by Brian Diaz to make the score 7-3 which is where it stood at the half.
  • Third Quarter… After holding Eastside to three and out to start the third quarter, the Raiders went 64 yards and scored on a 26 yard TD pass from James Rawl to Jayden McGowen… Diaz added the PAT to make it 10-7 Raiders…. After the ensuing kickoff, the Eagles fumbled on the first play and eh Raiders recovered it…. On the first play Rawl connected with Cason Elledge for a scoring strike of 31 yards… Diaz again added the PAT and the score stood 17-7 Raiders with 8:06 left in the quarter… Incidentally, those were the first points of the season for the Raiders in the second half of any game and were the last points of the third quarter.
  • Fourth Quarter… The Eagles started a drive late in the third quarter and finished it in the fourth quarter on a 35 yard pass play and with the PAT the score stood 17-14 with 11:42 left in the game… The Raiders last score came with 6:46 left to play when Jayden McGowen broke of an 80 yard run for the score…Diaz did add the PAT to make it 24-14… The Eagle’s last score came with 4:46 left to play when the Raiders lost the handle on the ball and it rolled into their end zone where the Raiders covered and Eastside covered the Riders for a safety…. The Eagles fumbled the ball to end their next possession and the Raiders fell on it and then took 2 “victory knees” to take the win.
  • Stats… The Eagles finished with 377 yards of total offense to the Raiders 297… 294 of the Eagles yards came through the air while the Raiders picked up 147 off the arm of Rawl… The Raiders did outrush the Eagles 150 yards to 83… McGowen was the leading rusher in the game with 84 yards and the TD… Rawl completed 11 of 19 attempts for the 147 yard with win interception and the 2 TDs… To see the entire stat package including play by play accounting of the game click here.

Laurens Academy 52 – Jefferson Davis Academy 14Last Friday the Crusaders boarded the bus and traveled down to Blackville to take on the Crusaders of Jefferson Davis Academy… well the bus did not break down and the rise back home was a pleasant one as the Crusaders (Laurens that is) improved their record to 4-3 as the took a 52-14 win over Jeff Davis… The Crusaders outscored Jeff Davis 22-8 in the first quarter and never looked back… Thomas Lowy had 2 rushing TDs of 26 & 13 yards… On the night he also completed 5 TD passes… Two were to Caio Rita (21 & 51 yards, and one each to Diamonte Grant (19 yards) Clarence Bertoli (65 yard) and Jonas Smith (35 yards)…The Crusaders also converted 3 two-point conversions and are you ready for this, Clarence Bertoli kicked 2 PATS (that might be a school record…LOL

  • First quarter…The Crusaders took the opening kickoff and went 52 yards in 6 plays scoring on a 26 yard run by Thomas Lowry… He then completed a pass to Caio Rita to make the score 8-0… After stopping Jeff Davis the Crusaders went back down the field scoring on a on a 21 yard pass from Lowry to Clarence Bertoli to make the score 14-0 as the PAT was no good… Jeff Davis then responded by getting their first TD of the night and a 2-point conversion to make it 14-8 with 2:49 left in the quarter… The Crusaders go right back down the field and score on a 13 yard run and also carried it in for the 2 point conversion making it 22-8… That TD was setup by a 41 yard pass completion from Lowry to Bertoli
  • Second Quarter… The Crusaders then scored again with 6:59 left in the half when Lowy hit Rita again with a TD pass this on from 51 yards out… Lowry added the 2=point conversion to make it 30-8… The Crusaders struck one more time before the half as Lowy found Diamonte Grant open for a 19 yard TD pass… Then something unusual happened, Bertoli kicked the PAT to make it 39-8 with 25 seconds left in the half… That kicked PAT might be the cause of the small earthquake reported down in that area…LOL.
  • Third Quarter… With 7:32 left on the clock in the third quarter Lowry again had another TD pass then one to Bertoli from 65 yards out but the PAT was missed so the score stood 45-8 with 7:32 left in the third quarter…Jeff Davis picked up their final score late in the quarter to make it 45-14
  • Fourth Quarter… The Crusaders final score came with 9:43 left in the game when Jonas Smith got in on the scoring catching Lowry’s last TD pass of the night from 35 yards out… The PAT kick was good (another small earthquake) making the final score 52-14
  • Stars… The Crusaders finished with 442 yards of total offense with 346 of them coming off the arm of Lowry who completed 17 of 25 passes with no interceptions and the 5 TDs… He also had 54 yards on 9 rushes and the 2 TDs…Jeff Davis finished with 351 yards rushing and all but 76 of them were on the ground… Their running back Thomas Payne had 209 of their rushing yards…. My Thanks Martin Lowry for providing me with the information.
