Sports Report for Tuesday, 10-13-2020

Local Notes:

Clinton Red Devils

Volleyball… With all the football going on I have gotten behind in reporting volleyball scores so let’s fix that now.

  • Laurens 3 – Clinton 1… Last Wednesday the Red Devils hosted the Laurens Raiders… The news is not good for Red Devil fans as the Raiders took a 3-1 win in varsity action… The Raiders won the first sets by identical scores of 26-24 in some hard fought matches…The Red Devils regrouped and won the third set 25-23 before falling to the Raiders 25-17 in the fourth set…. JV: Clinton 2 – Laurens 1… Now the news is better where the JV squad is concerned as they took a 2-1 win over the Raiders… Laurens took the first set 25-14 but the Red Devils rebounded taking the next two sets by scores of 25-19 and 15-7.
  • Clinton 3 – Emerald 0… The very next night (Thursday) the Red Devils boarded the bus and traveled to Greenwood to take on the Emerald Vikings… Better news here as the varsity squad took a 3-0 win over the Vikings… Set scores were 25-9, 25-22 and 25-20… JV: Clinton 2 – Emerald 0… In action prior to the varsity match, the Red Devils were also victorious as they took a 2-0 win over the Vikings… Set scores were 25-13 and 25-18
  • Today… The volleyball squads are scheduled to travel to Woodruff to take on the Wolverines starting with JV action at 5:30

Cross Country…  A quick note about a schedule change involving the Red Devil cross country teams… They were scheduled to host a meet today but due to course conditions the meet has been postponed until tomorrow.

Laurens Raiders:

Volleyball – Catching up on Raider volleyball also

  • Clinton Matches… Now as previously mentioned the Raiders took a 3-1 win in varsity action at Clinton on Wednesday last week… For a few more details on this match from the Laurens perspective click here….  Now for a couple more details on the JV match click here.
  • Greer 3 – Laurens 0… Now the news was not as good on Thursday of last week as the Raiders fell to the Greer Yellow Jackets 3-0 at home… The first two set scores were 25-21 and 25-20… The Raiders tried to comeback in the third set but still fell by a tight 28-26 margin… For more details on this match click here…. The JV squad did not play.
  • Thursday… The Raider volley ball squads will close out their season on Thursday when they host the Clinton Red Devils starting with JV action at 5:30.

Laurens Academy Crusaders: I need to do some catching up with the Laurens Academy volleyball team.

  • Richard Winn 3 – LA 0… Last Thursday the Crusaders traveled to Richard Winn to take on the Eagles… All I have the score on is the varsity match and it’s not good news for Crusader fans as they fell by a score of 3-0… Sorry no scoring details and no score on the middle school squad.
  • Cambridge 3 – LA 1… The Crusader volleyball teams were back in action last night as they hosted the Cambridge Academy Cougars… In varsity action I hate to have to report that Cambridge took a 3-1 win over the Crusaders… The Crusaders won the first set 25-20 but the Cougars came back to take the next 3 sets by scores of 25-22, 26-24 and 25-23 in some very hard fought action… The news is better where the middle school team is concerned as they took a 2-0 win over the Cougars…The Crusaders will be back in action today as they host the Knights of WW King starting with middle school action at 5:00 pm.

Whitmire 16 – Ware Shoals 12…last night over at Ware Shoals the Whitmire Wolverines and the Ware Shoals Hornets were finally able to get their football seasons started after dealing with COVID 19 problems… It was a back and forth affair that had its share of first game miscues by both teams but in the end Whitmire scored with 29.6 seconds left to take a 16-12 win… Whitmire scored first late in the first quarter when Cason English carried it in from the 2 yard line and the Wolverines converted on the two-point conversion to make it 8-0… The Hornets scored with 2:50 left in the first half when Jake Calvert carried it in from the 1 yard line capping a 59 yard drive in in 9 plays… The two-point conversion failed making it 8-6 Wolverines… On the second play from scrimmage following the kickoff the Wolverines fumbled and the Hornets Dalton Hawkins fell on it to give the Hornets the ball at the wolverine 22 yard line… Two plays later Dana Givens punched it in from the 5 yard line to but the Hornets up 12-8 as the two-point conversion failed… There was not further scoring in the game until the Wolverines took over on downs on their own 10 yard line with 2:31 left in the game and drove down and scored with 29.4 seconds left on clock when Cason English hit Nathaniel Stanley on a 50 yard pass play to make it 14-12 Wolverines…  They converted the 2-point attempt to go up 16-14 and any hope of the Hornets coming back was snuffed out when on third and 10 from their own 25 yard line the Hornets had a pass intercepted and all the Wolverines had to do was “take a  knee” to go home with the win…. The Hornets had opportunities in the second half as twice they drove down into Wolverine territory only to have their drives stall and missed on two field goal attempts from about 27 yards out.
