Sports Report for Friday, 10-16-2020

Local Notes:

High School Varsity Football Schedule for Tonight

  • Red Devils… The Red Devils are idle and have the night off.
  • Laurens Academy… The Crusaders are coming off the 52-14 win last Friday down at Jeff Davis and are hosting the 2-2 Knights of WW King… The Knights are 2-2 and I do believe this is homecoming for the Crusaders…
  • Ware Shoals… The Hornets were finally able to play their first game of the season earlier this week on Monday and fell to the Whitmire Wolverines 16-14 at Tommy Davis Field… Well tonight I can predict with certainty that the Hornets will win…  The reason I can make that prediction is because Ware Shoals is on the road traveling to Dixie their arch rival and they are also called the Hornets… Dixie come in with a 1-2 record losing to McCormick and Southside Christian and their lone win was against Calhoun Falls Charter School.
  • Raiders… The Raiders are stepping out of region play to host the Aiken Green Hornets… Aiken is another team that just played their first game on Monday as they traveled to Airport and fell 27-14… As you most likely already know the Raiders are 1-2 on the season and coming off a 24-16 win over Eastside at home last week…. I do believe that LSHS will be streaming the game live on YouTube and you’ll have to search YouTube for it as I don’t know what the link is… Try searching for Aiken at Laurens and see if you find it that way… By the way if you want to see the digital version of the Game day Program for the game tonight click here.

Laurens Raiders:

  • JV Football: Laurens 28 – Chesnee 7… In JV football action last night at KC Hanna Stadium the Raiders hosted the Chesnee Eagles… It was a good night for the Raiders as they rolled to a 28-7 win over the Eagles… The Raiders scored the first time they touched the ball as Noah Mosley had a 45 yard run to put the ball at the Eagle’s 15 yard line and on the next play Nick Fowlers scored with 7:04 on the clock… Hugo Avila made the PAT to make it 7-0… The Raiders also scored at the end of their second possession when Fowler hit KD Mosley on a 40 scoring strike and with Avila’s PAT the score stood 14-0 Raiders with 4:59 left in the first quarter… The Raiders did not score again until there was 59 seconds left in the third quarter when Hunter Nabors connected with Mosley on another scoring pass this time of 30 yards… Again Avila’s PAT was good so the Raiders now led 21-0… The Raiders got on the scoreboard the last time when with 5:05 left in the game when Fowler again connected with Mosley this time from 12 yards out… With Avila’s PAT the score was now 28-0… The Eagles finally got on the scoreboard with 2:10 left in the game on a 6 yard TD run capping a 68 yards drive… The PAT was good to make the final 28-7 Raiders.
  • Volleyball: Laurens 3 – Clinton 0… For the second time this season the Raiders and the Red Devils got together in volleyball action this time at LDHS last night… In varsity action the Raiders had taken a 3-1 win over at Clinton earlier this month… Well once again last night the Raiders were victorious as they took a 3-0 win… Set scores were 25-13, 25-7 and 25-21… It was also Senior Night for the Raiders as they honored their three seniors Michaela Smith, Rebekah Smith and Veronica Corteville.

Laurens Academy Crusaders: The Laurens Academy volleyball teams hosted the Eagles of Newberry Academy in their last home matches of the regular season.

  • MS: LA 2 – Newberry 0… In middle school action the Crusaders took a 2-0 win over the Eagles to run their record to 14-0 on the season with one match left to play at Newberry next Monday.
  • V: LA 3 – Newberry 2… Now in varsity action there is also good news to report as the Crusaders took a come from behind hard fought 3-2 win over the Eagles… The Crusaders won the first set but the Eagles came back to win sets 2 & 3… Set 4 saw the Crusaders take a close 25-23 win to set up the decisive 5th set… When the final volley was over the Crusaders had taken a 15-9 win and win the match 3-2… It was also Senior Night as the Crusaders honored their 2 seniors Brantley Armstrong and Julia Marlett.

Middle School Football

  • LMS 24 – GCO 0… In middle school football action the Laurens Middle School Tigers rolled to a 28-0 win over the Gray Court-Owings Tigers last night up at GCO… The LMS Tigers scored all their points in the first half the first 3 times they had the ball… Their first score came on a 37 yard TD pass from Joshue Goodwin to Javious Williams and Goodwin carried the ball in for the 2-point conversion to make it 8-0… LMS’ nest score came on a 55 yard TD run by Travilous Austin with Williams adding the 2-point conversion… The LMS Tigers final score came with 1:09 left in the half when Goodwin connected on a 25 yard TD pass to Narrius James…. Goodwin added the 2-point conversion to make it 24-0… GCIO made some adjustment at the half to slow down the LMS offense which obviously had a size advantage along both the offensive and defensive lines… To their credit,  the GCO Tigers never gave up as they drove to the Laurens 3 yard line with about a minute left in the game only to fumble turning the ball over to Laurens to run the clock out.

 MLB

  • Braves 10 – Dodgers 2After having a disastrous game with the Dodgers on Wednesday that saw the Dodgers put 11 runs on the board in the first inning and then go on to a 15-3 win over the Braves everyone was asking if the bubble had finally broke for the Braves and if the Dodgers were ready now to come back and show the Braves why they had the best record in the NL would the Braves now fold, well the Braves answered that question last night in pretty convincing fashion as they took a 10-2 win over the Dodgers… The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the 6th inning when the put 6 runs on the board and then went on to a 10-2 win… The Braves outhit the Dodgers 10-4 and 2 of those hits were homers… Both of them came off the bat of Marcell Ozuna… He led the Braves at the plate going 4 for 5 with one of his hits being a double in addition to the two homers….The Braves now only need one win to punch their ticket to the World Series and they will play again tonight at 9:00 pm and that game can be seen on FS1.
  • Astros 4 – Rays 3… The Houston Astros once again avoided elimination from the ALCS as they took a 4-3 win over the Tampa Bay Rays in dramatic fashion as the game entered the bottom of the 9th tied 1-1 and with 1 out Carlos Correa hit a walk-off homer to win the game for the Astros.
