Sports Report for Monday, 11-16-2020

Local Notes:

Holly Hill 50 – Laurens Academy 36The Laurens Academy Crusaders saw their season come to an end one game short of playing for the SCISA 8-Man Championship last Friday night as the Holly Hill Raiders took a 50-36 win… The Crusaders trailed 16-0 before putting any points on the scoreboard and the score was tied 30-30 with 2:37 left in the third quarter when a pair of miscues by the Crusaders led to Raider points that the Crusaders could not recover from.

  • First Quarter… The Crusaders won the toss and elected to defer and the Raiders took the opening kickoff 90 yards for the score and then added the 2-point conversion to go up 8-0 with just seconds off the clock… The Crusaders were unable to move the ball in their first possession and punted to the Raiders who then fumbled ball on the fifth play of the drive and it was recovered by Carson Venable… However 4 plays later the Crusaders fumbled it right back to the Raiders… After the fumble recovery, the Raiders went 54 yards and scored with 1:10 left in the quarter to go up 16-0.
  • Second Quarter… The Crusaders then went down the field scoring on a 53 yard pass from Thomas Lowry to Diamonte Grant with 11:14 left in the half… Lowry carried it in for the two-point conversion to cut the Raider lead in half 16-8… After forcing the Raider to punt on their next possession, the Crusaders tied the score 16-16 when Lowry connected with Cal Robertson on a 31 yard scoring toss and again Lowry added the PAT to tie the score 16-16 with 4:18 left in the half… On the first play from scrimmage after the kickoff the Raiders Marion Breland broke loose on a 55 yard run that ended at the Crusader 1 yard line when Lowry ran and him down and made the TD saving tackle… The Raiders would not be denied as they scored on the next play and added the two-point conversion to go up 24-16 with 3:08 left in the half… Neither team was able to score in the remaining time left in the half so that was the score when the horn sounded halftime.
  • Third Quarter… The Crusaders took the opening kickoff of the second half and scored on the second play from scrimmage when Lowry and Robertson again connected for the score this time from 51 yards out… The PAT failed so the Raiders lead was cut to 24-22…. Holly Hill had trouble handling the ensuing kickoff and the Crusaders recovered at the 50… Four plays later Lowry carried the ball in from 1 yard out and then connected with Robertson for the two-point conversion to put the Crusaders up 30-24 with 8:54 left in the quarter… The Raiders fumbled to end their next possession but the Crusaders were not able to convert that into points.. With 4:07 left in the quarter the Raiders started a drive that ended with 2:27 left in the quarter when they scored on a long TD run by Marion Breland but the two-point conversion failed so the score was tied 30-30… The Crusaders fumbled to end their next possession giving the Raiders the ball at the Crusader 46 yard line.
  • Fourth Quarter… After the fumble recovery the Raider covered the distance in 9 plays and scored with 10:22 left in the game and added the two-point conversion to make it 38-30 Raiders with 10:22 left in the game…After picking up a first down, the Crusaders turned the ball over on downs and took over at their own 44 yard line… Four plays later they scored again but failed on the two-point conversion to make it 44-30 with 5:30 left in the game… Disaster struck on the kickoff as the Crusaders had trouble handling it and the Raiders recovered the ball at the Crusader 21 yard line… A penalty moved it to the 9 yard line and on the next play the Raiders scored but failed on the two-point conversion to make it 50-30 Raiders with 5:17 left in the game… True to form the Crusaders continued to fight and and went 60 yards in 11 plays to score with 52.7 seconds left in the game on a 1 yard run by Lowry to make it 50-36 as the two-point conversion failed… The Raiders then ran out the clock for the win.
  • NOTES… The Crusaders finished with 284 yards of total offense… Only 52 of them came on the ground as Lowry had 49 of them with two TD runs of 1 yard each… Clarence Bertoli had the other rush for 3 yards… Lowry went 18 of 25 for 232 yards passing with no interceptions and 3 TD passes… Cal Robertson caught 2 of them (31 & 51 yards) and finished with 90 yards receiving on the night… Diamonte Grant caught the other 53 yard TD pass and finished with 91 yards on the night… Holly Hill finished with 381 yards of total offense with 334 of them coming on the ground… They completed 1 of 3 passes for 47 yards…. The Crusaders finish with an 8-4 record overall and 3-2 in region play finishing second in the region behind Richard Winn who defeated Andrew Jackson Academy last Friday 22-14 and will now face Holly Hill this Friday night for the SCISA 8-Man Championship… Congratulations to the Crusaders on a great season!
