Local Notes: 

Robertson Named TD Club Player of the Week…

  • The Laurens County Touchdown Club named its final Player of the Week for this season and that honor goes to Cal Robertson of Laurens Academy… Call is a three-way player for the Crusaders as he plays wide receiver on offense, cornerback on defense and is an integral part of their special teams… In the Crusaders final game of the season a 50-36 loss at Holly Hill last Friday, Cal caught 4 passes for 90 yards… Among those 4 passes were 2 for touchdowns… On was for 31 yards and the other for 51 yards… On defense he had 9 tackles and one pass deflection…. Cal is a junior who contributed greatly to the Crusaders’ 8-4 season and will be a leader on the 2021 team.
  •  The Laurens County Touchdown Club will honor Cal Robertson at the Touchdown Club meeting this Thursday at which time it will be College Football Day….  Head Football Coach Tommy Spangler of Presbyterian College will be speaking as well as Deputy Athletics Director Charles Waddell from the University of South Carolina and Al Richard from Clemson University…  Al Richard also played for Clinton High School… The public is invited to attend this meeting which will start at noon at The Ridge the headquarters of the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department on Exchange Dr… Tickets are $10 at the door.

 

Coach Simmons Inducted into SCCA Hall of Fame

  • This past Saturday at the Greenville Convention Center Clinton HS own tennis coach Clovis Maddox Simmons was inducted into the S.C. Athletic Coaches Association’s Hall of Fame… She has been the tennis coach at Clinton HS for the last 30 years… Her girls’ team has a record of 435-110 while her boys’ team record is 390-104, including the 2000 state championship…  Her girls teams have been to the state finals 7 times (1992, 1995, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2004, 2005) and her boys teams 6 times (1999, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2018, 2019)… Clovis has been named region coach of the year 35 times (21 girls, 14 boys) and has been named SCACA COY 3 times (1996, 2000, 2018).  In 2019, Clovis was inducted into the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame…  She has served as an assistant and head coach in both the girls and boys North-South All-Star Matches…  For 25 years she has been the singles tournament director for the SCHSL.  Clovis is a native of Blackshear, Georgia, a Georgia Southern University graduate, and a 31 year member of the SCACA.
  • Others inducted into the SCACA Hall of Fame this past Saturday were: Jerry Brown, a football coach at Spring Valley, Fairfield Central, Berkeley, Batesburg-Leesville and Wade Hampton high schools; Max Clyburn (deceased), golf, Lancaster;  Johnny Goodwin, basketball at Abbeville and McCormick; and Brad Porter, wrestling, Cheraw.

  • Laurens County Touchdown Club… The next meeting of the Laurens County TD Club will be at noon on November 19th out at The Ridge on Exchange Drive… In addition to the local high school coaches the featured speaker is scheduled to be Tommy Spangler Head Coach Presbyterian College…It will also be the annual Carolina-Clemson meeting where speakers from both universities will be present…To view a posting that has more information about the club, how to join and schedule of speakers, click here.
  • Youth Basketball at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Basketball registration for youth ages 6-12 is now taking place at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters The Ridge at 301 Exchange Rd. is now taking place through Saturday, November 21st… The registration fee is $40 per child… Registration will end on Nov. 21st and skills evaluation will be held on Monday, Nov.23rd with makeup on the 24th… For more information contact them at 681-7275 of go to their website at www.laurensrecreation.com.
  • Youth Basketball at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is open for youth basketball at the Clinton Family YMCA… The age groups will be 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12… Registration fees are $50.00 for Y members and $65.00 for Non-members…  Financial Aid and assistance are available….   • Laurens YMCA 2020 Reindeer Run…  The Laurens Family YMCA will be holding its annual Reindeer Run on Saturday, Dec. 12th starting at 9:00 am… If you register by Nov. 20th the registration fee will be just $25 (and you will be guaranteed a race shirt) but after that the registration fee will jump to $30… You can register online at www.lakelandsymca.org or at www.active.com… Now for more information about the run click here or contact them at 864-984-2626 or at www.lakelandsymca.org/laurens.
  • Tae Kwon Do Returns to Laurens YMCA… Tae Kwon Do classes are returning to the Laurens Family YMCA starting on October 5, 2020… These classes are for youth 7-15 years old and are $25 per month… Classes will be held each Monday from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm… If you have more questions call the Y at 984-2626
