Sports Report for Thursday, 11-19-2020

Local Notes: Well we are between seasons in local high school athletics…. Let’s look at what I know about the upcoming basketball season at the local high schools and middle schools.

Clinton HS:

  • Varsity Basketball Schedules…. According to the CHS athletics website the varsity basketball teams will begin play on Tuesday, Dec. 1 at Newberry HS taking on the Bulldogs in non-region action… The girls’ game is scheduled to begin at 6:00 pm and the boys will follow about 7:330… To see the schedule for the varsity girls on the CHS athletics website click here… To see the boys schedule click here
  • JV Schedule… The JV basketball teams at CHS are scheduled to get into action on Monday, Nov. 30th as they host the Newberry Bulldogs… The girls’ game is scheduled to start at 6:00 pm and the boys to follow about 7:15… Again to see the girls’ JV schedule click here and to see the boys’ JV schedule click here
  • CMS Schedule… The CHS athletic website also has the schedule for the Clinton Middle School Wildcats posted… The will start their season on Monday Dec. 10th as they travel to Saluda to take on the Tigers… The girls’ game is scheduled to begin at 5:30 and the boys’ game about 6:15… To see the CMS girls’ schedule click here and to see the boys’ schedule click here.

Laurens HS:

  • Varsity Basketball Schedules… The Laurens Raider varsity basketball teams will begin their regular season with non-region action as they travel to Hillcrest to take on the Rams on Tuesday, Dec. 1st … The girls are scheduled to start at 6:00 pm and the boys about 7:30… Now the boys’ varsity team will be playing in the Impact Sports Tournament at Spartanburg Christian Academy starting next Monday, Nov. 23rd when they take on Seneca starting about 5:15… To see the girls schedule as posted on the Laurens athletic website click here and to see the boys click here.
  • JV Schedules… The Raider JV schedules show that the teams will be starting the day before of Monday, Nov. 30th as they host the Hillcrest Rams… The girls are scheduled to start at 5:30 and the boys about 6:45… To see the girls schedule click here and to see the boys schedule click here.
  • Freshman Boys… At the present time there is no schedule posted for the freshman boys’ team.
  • Middle School Schedules… Also at the present time there is no schedule posted for any of the District 55 middle school teams.

Laurens Academy:

  • Basketball Schedules… At the present time the Crusader basketball schedules have not been released.

PC Basketball Notes: The basketball season is drawing ever closer for both PC basketball teams and I thought I’d pass along a few of notes about the men’s and women’s teams… First I’ll mention something that concerns both teams… Home games for both teams will take place with no fans in the stands through at least Dec. 31st… This decision was made in the light of the COVUD 19 situation after it was determined that social distancing at the Templeton Center would be difficult… A decision will be made later about games after Dec. 31st… To see the press release about this click here.

  • Women’s Basketball… Head Coach Alaura Sharp will be beginning her third season at the helm of the Lady Blue Hose basketball team… Last year they finished the season with a 12-18 overall record (5 more wins than the year before) and 7-13 in league play… They will be the first of the basketball teams to start their season… They start their session next Wednesday (11-25-20) as they as they travel to Kennesaw State for a 4:00 pm contest with the Owls… Then on Friday after Thanksgiving (11-27-20) they travel up to Clemson to take on the Tigers… Tipoff for that game is scheduled for 5:00 pm….   • Men’s Basketball… Coach Quinton Ferrell will be heading into his second year guiding the men’s basketball program but sixth overall as he was an assistant at PC from 2007 -2012… The Blue Hose finished last season with a 10-12 overall record and 7-11 in Big South play… The men do not hit the court for their first game until Dec. 2nd when they travel to Jacksonville University to take on the Dolphins… To see the entire men’s basketball schedule click here.

This and That

  • Laurens County Touchdown Club… The next meeting of the Laurens County TD Club will be at noon on November 19th out at The Ridge on Exchange Drive… In addition to the local high school coaches the featured speaker is scheduled to be Tommy Spangler Head Coach Presbyterian College…It will also be the annual Carolina-Clemson meeting where speakers from both universities will be present… Deputy Athletics Director Charles Waddell from the University of South Carolina and Al Richard from Clemson University will represent their- respective universities…  Al Richard also played for Clinton High School… The public is invited to attend this meeting which will start at noon at The Ridge the headquarters of the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department on Exchange Dr… Tickets are $10 at the door… To view a posting that has more information about the club, how to join and schedule of speakers, click here.
  • Youth Basketball at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department… Basketball registration for youth ages 6-12 is now taking place at the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation headquarters The Ridge at 301 Exchange Rd. is now taking place through Saturday, November 21st… The registration fee is $40 per child… Registration will end on Nov. 21st and skills evaluation will be held on Monday, Nov.23rd with makeup on the 24th… For more information contact them at 681-7275 of go to their website at www.laurensrecreation.com.
  • Youth Basketball at the Clinton YMCA… Registration is open for youth basketball at the Clinton Family YMCA… The age groups will be 5-6, 7-8, 9-10 and 11-12… Registration fees are $50.00 for Y members and $65.00 for Non-members…  Financial Aid and assistance are available….   • Laurens YMCA 2020 Reindeer Run…  The Laurens Family YMCA will be holding its annual Reindeer Run on Saturday, Dec. 12th starting at 9:00 am… If you register by Nov. 20th the registration fee will be just $25 (and you will be guaranteed a race shirt) but after that the registration fee will jump to $30… You can register online at www.lakelandsymca.org or at www.active.com… Now for more information about the run click here or contact them at 864-984-2626 or at www.lakelandsymca.org/laurens.
  • Tae Kwon Do Returns to Laurens YMCA… Tae Kwon Do classes are returning to the Laurens Family YMCA starting on October 5, 2020… These classes are for youth 7-15 years old and are $25 per month… Classes will be held each Monday from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm… If you have more questions call the Y at 984-2626
