Sports Report for Monday, 1-11-2021

Local Notes:

Laurens Academy: Last Friday the Laurens Academy Crusaders hosted the Knights of WW King in region varsity basketball action

  • Girls: LA 23 – WW King 11… If you happen to like low scoring basketball games the girls’ game was for you because there was only 34 points scored by the two teams… That being said its good news for Crusader fans as they took a 23-11 win over the Knights… The Crusader defense held the Knights scoreless in the first quarter while they put only 4 points on the board themselves… The Crusaders led 10-7 at the half and 14-10 going into the fourth quarter where they put 9 points on the board while holding the Knight to just 1 to take the 23-11 win… Both teams got shots off but their shooting percentage was cooler than the nighttime low temperatures we have been having… The Crusaders were also hampered by 28 turnovers in the game… Olivia Huck had a game-high 10 points to lead the Crusaders in scoring… Also scoring were Payton Breen with 7 points, Elissa Huck 4 and Rylee Ballard 2… The Crusaders improve to 5-6 overall and 2-1 in region play.
  • Boys: WW King 44 – LA 28… The Knight were able to earn a split with the Crusaders last Friday night as in boys’ action they took a 44-28 win over the Crusaders… The Crusaders only trailed 30-26 going into the last 8 minutes of play where they only got off 3 shots and missed them all settling for just 2 made free throws while the Knights Colton List scored 10 of his team-high 12 points in the those final 8 minutes of play to lift his team to the 44-28 win….  The Crusaders had only two players who managed to put points on the board as Diamonte Grant had a game-high 20 points and Thomas Lowry accounted for the other 8 points…The Crusaders fall to 4-7 on the season and 2-1 in region play.

COVID 19 Updates… Well the increased numbers have caused some local some local schools to suspend athletic activities and well as some of the state’s colleges and universities.

  • Laurens 55… Yesterday I received an email from LDHS Athletic Director Tommy Spires that stated “With the district’s decision to return to e-learning and the current state of our county COVID data we will postpone athletic events again this week.
  • Laurens Academy… Not long after I received that email another one came in from Tiffany Tarver the Sports Information Director at Laurens Academy that stated “Due to the increase of Covid-19 cases in Laurens County our school has switched to E-learning for the week…  The basketball games scheduled for the week of January the 11th will be postponed (Wardlaw 1/12 and Anderson Christian 1/14)…  We hope to resume basketball activities on January 18th.”
  • District 56…. Now I have not received any word from officials in District 56 which is also on e-learning this week as to their athletic schedule… I did check the athletic website and noticed that there are no middle school basketball games on the schedule until next week…The website still shows the Red Devil JV basketball teams headed to Broome tonight and the varsity girls hosting Broome tomorrow at 6:00 pm… However it does show the varsity boys game scheduled for tomorrow night as being postponed.
  • University of South Carolina… The men’s basketball team has postponed games due to COVID 19 and contact tracing… They postponed last Saturday’s game at Ole Miss and their next game tomorrow night with Tennessee at home…The next game not postponed on the men’s schedule is Saturday 1-16-21 at LSU.
  • Clemson… The Clemson men’s basketball team is also shut down due to COVID 19… Their game last Saturday at North Carolina and tomorrow’s game with Syracuse have been postponed.

College Football National Championship… Just a quick reminder to those of you who are NOT college football fans… If you have a friend who is a college football friend, don’t try to call and talk with him after 8:00 pm tonight… If you do it had better be important because he will be watching the National Championship game on ESPN between #3 ranked Ohio State and #1 ranked Alabama… That goes for trying to call me also.
