Sports Report for Tuesday, 1-12-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS

JV Basketball…. Last night the Clinton JV basketball teams traveled to Broom to take on the Centurions.

  • G: Clinton 42 – Broome 20… The only info that I have other than the score is that the Red Devils were led by Jordan Hill with 20 points.
  • B: Broome 54 – Clinton 31… Again the only other information I have is that the Red Devils were led in scoring by Davante Cunningham who finished with 7 points and Jaden Hill with 6.

 Varsity Basketball

  • One Game Tonight… The Red Devil Athletic calendar shows that the varsity girls will host the Centurions tonight with tipoff set for 6:00 pm… It also shows that the boys’ game has been postponed… An educated guess here but that is most likely due to COVID 19 issues with the Broome boys’ team… Remember you need to purchase your tickets online and to do that see the Ticket Information section below.
  • Schedule Change… Yesterday I received word   Tuesday of next week (1-19-21) only the boys will be playing as they host the Emerald Vikings with tipoff set for 6:00 pm… Again an educated guess that COVID problems with the Emerald girls’ team may be the reason for this.

Laurens HS:

  • 2021 Raider Baseball Tryouts… Coach Tori Patterson has now set the dates for Raider baseball tryouts and those dates are Monday and Tuesday February 1st and 2nd… Those wanting to tryout for the team will be expected to be there both days and you must have a current physical before you can participate… C-Team:  Is open to 7th and 8th graders and you need to be at Ed Prescott Field between 4:00-5:45 pm on those dates… JV and Varsity: Is open to 9th – 12th graders and you need to be at Ed Prescott Field between 5:45-7:30 pm… If there are any questions, please email Head Coach Tori Patterson at kjpatterson@laurens55.org.

College Football

Bama Runs the Table… Well this is for the casual college football fans out there or the college football fans are coming out of a coma or just returned to earth after being abducted by aliens in the last few days, weeks or months, the Alabama Crimson Tide took a 52-24 win over the Ohio state Buckeyes to claim this year’s College Football Playoff National Championship… They did it in convincing fashion as the last time the game was tied was with 11:43 left in the second quarter when Ohio State scored to make it 14-14 and after that it was pretty much all Bama as they led 35-17 at the half and coasted from there… Now if you would like to see stats on the game and a score by score accounting of the game along with other information click here…  A couple of interesting points after the game was said and done:

  • Heisman Trophy winner DeVonta Smith showed why he won the Heisman as he had 12 receptions for 215 yard and 3 TDs in the first half… The only reason he did not get more is that he had to leave the game with a hand injury early in the third quarter and did not return to the game (they really did not need him)… Oh by the way, he was the game’s Offensive MVP.
  • Bama QB Mac Jones had a record setting night in a in a BCS or CFP title game as he went 36-45 for 464 yards and 5 TDs.
  • The 52 points scored by Alabama was the most points ever given up by the Ohio State defense in a bowl game.
  • Bama won its 13th National Championship with 6 of them coming in the last 12 years… They also become the first team in the CFP era to be ranked #1 in every CFP ranking and win the title.
  • Nick Saban passed Bama’s legendary coach Bear Bryant as the coach to win the most championships as last night was his 7th including the one at LSU.. Bryant had 6.
  • And finally, some of the “experts” last night started quoting odds on who would win next seasons’ championship game… Bama was a 3-1 favorite, Clemson 4-1 and both Ohio State and Oklahoma were listed as 15-2…Give me a break, let’s wait at least 24 hours before we start talking about next season!
