Sports Report for Wednesday, 1-13-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • G: Clinton 35 – Broome 25… Last night the Lady Red Devil varsity basketball team hosted the Broome Centurions in region action… The Red Devils held the Centurions scoreless in the first quarter while they only managed 6 points in the that quarter themselves as they went on to take a 35-25 win… The Centurions did not get on the board until the 5:48 mark of the second quarter and found themselves trailing 17-9 at the half… During that first half of play the Red Devils out-rebounded the Centurions by a wide margin … The Red Devils had 17 defensive rebounds to the Centurions 9 and they did not allow the Centurions any second-chance shots as they did not allow them to get any offensive rebounds while they had 9… The Red Devils continued to outscore the Centurions in the third quarter to take a 32-21 lead into the final 8 minutes of where both teams had trouble scoring and Clinton did slow the game down in the last couple of minutes… Coach Gardner was pleased with the overall play of his team especially in the rebounding and free throw shooting departments…  The Red Devils defensively outrebounded the Centurions 27-18 while offensively they outrebounded them 20-5… The Red Devils also made 16 of 25 free throws attempted which is up from recent outings… Tinique Austin had a game-high 13 points for the Red Devils and Lacy Harris led the Centurions with 10 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were De’Shanti Watts with 9 points, Taneal Evans 8, Anna Litzenberger 3 while both Dana Kinard and Madison Swindler finished with 1 point each… The Red Devils are now 4-1 overall on the season and 2-0 in region play… The Red Devil boys did not see action last night as the Centurions are dealing with COVID related issues… Both varsity teams will travel up to Chapman HS on Friday to take on the Panthers.


College Basketball Rankings… We have not had time to catch up with the college basketball D1 rankings in a while so let’s do that now.

  • Men… The latest AP Poll shows change in the top 6 spots when compared to last week… Gonzaga continues to hold down the top spot with a 12-0 record and Baylor is still # 2 with an 11-0 record… Spots 3 – 6 are held by Villanova, Texas, Iowa and Kansas in that order… Michigan, Creighton, Wisconsin and Tennessee hold down spots 7-19… The Clemson Tigers are in the top 24 as they are now ranked #12 up from #19 last week… To see the entire top 25 in the AP Poll click here.
  • Women… There was not a lot of change in the women’s AP Poll this week also… Stanford is still #1 and Louisville #2 and they both have 10-0 records… NC State is also 10-0 and checks in at #3… UConn (7-0) and South Carolina (8-1) occupy spots 4 and 5 respectively… Spots 6-19 are occupied by Baylor, Texas A&M, UCLA, Maryland and Oregon in that order… To see the entire top 25 AP Poll click here.

  • 2021 Raider Baseball Tryouts… Coach Tori Patterson has now set the dates for Raider baseball tryouts and those dates are Monday and Tuesday February 1st and 2nd… Those wanting to tryout for the team will be expected to be there both days and you must have a current physical before you can participate… C-Team:  Is open to 7th and 8th graders and you need to be at Ed Prescott Field between 4:00-5:45 pm on those dates… JV and Varsity: Is open to 9th – 12th graders and you need to be at Ed Prescott Field between 5:45-7:30 pm… If there are any questions, please email Head Coach Tori Patterson at kjpatterson@laurens55.org.
  • Pick Your Promo for January at the Laurens YMCA… The Laurens Family YMCA which is part of the Lakelands YMCA group is having a Pick You Promo for the month of January… For January only you can join the Y with no joiner’s fee, no monthly fee and no contract or you can join the Y and get half off the monthly fee for January, February and March but you must sign up during January… If you have questions or want more details on this call the Y at 984-2626… If you have been thinking about joining the YMCA this is a great opportunity to do so don’t let it pass you by.
  • Tae Kwon Do Returns to Laurens YMCA… Tae Kwon Do classes are returning to the Laurens Family YMCA starting on October 5, 2020… These classes are for youth 7-15 years old and are $25 per month… Classes will be held each Monday from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm… If you have more questions call the Y at 984-2626
