Sports Report for Friday, 1-15-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… Last night the Red Devil JV basketball teams hosted the Panthers of Chapman HS.

  • Girls: Clinton 20 – Chapman 14… The girls’ game saw both teams commit more turnovers (64) than they scored points (34) but in spite of that the Red Devils took a 20-14 win over the Panthers… The Red Devils outscored the Panthers 6-4 in the first quarter and then held them scoreless in the second quarter to carry an 11-4 lead into the locker room at the half…  Going into the fourth quarter the Red Devils led 16-10 and held on to take the win as Chapman missed free throws down the stretch that could have given them the lead… One stat that went heavily in favor of Clinton was rebounding as the Red Devils had 17 defensive rebounds to Chapman’s 7 and also outrebounded them on the offensive boards 18-6… Both teams simply had trouble getting shots to fall… Jordan Hill was the leading scorer for the Red Devils with 6 points… Indya S. had 5 points, Patience Adams 3, Marcie Campbell 2, fantasia Walker 2 and Zakalia Redd 2.
  • Boys: Chapman 42 – Clinton 28… In boys’ action, Chapman turned the tables taking a 42-28 win over the Red Devils… Chapman raced out to a 28-11 lead at the half in a first half that saw turnovers and rebounding stats for the two teams being just about equal…The big problem for the Red Devils was shooting percentage… As Coach Josh Bridges comment afterwards the Red Devils have had problems getting shots to fall over the last few games and those woes continued on last night… The third quarter saw the Red Devils score 12 points but the Panthers scored 14… The Red Devils continued to fight holding the Panthers scoreless in the fourth quarter but again shooting woes meant that the Red Devils could only score 5 points in the quarter to make the final 42-28… T. Counts led the Panthers in scoring with a game-high 12 points and the P anthers had one other player in double-digits with 11… Zay Johnson was the leading scorer for the Red Devils with 8 points… Other scoring for the Red Devils were Ke’Laja Byrd with 5, Quay Rant 4, CJ Young 4, Jaden Hill 4, De’Vonta Cunningham 2, and MJ Henderson 1.
