Sports Report for Monday, 1-18-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… The Clinton Red Devil varsity basketball teams made the trip up to Inman last Friday night to take on the Chapman Panthers in region contests… The Panthers won both contest and a big factor in the Red Devil losses was the fact that at times both Red Devil teams had trouble getting shots to fall even layups and put backs after offensive rebounds.

  • Girls: Chapman 61 – Clinton 54… In the first game of the evening the Lady Panthers took a 61-54 over the Lady Red Devils… Clinton scored the first two points of the game but by the end of the first quarter the Panthers led 24-11 and never trailed the rest of the way… As Coach John Gardner lamented after the game they just could not get shots to drop and it seemed like the missed “a million” layups and free throw shooting was not the best in the world…. The Red Devils did cut into the Panther lead in the second quarter as the score stood 34-26 Panthers at the half… Going into the fourth quarter the Red Devils trailed by 10 (41-51)… The Red Devils did outscore the Panthers 3 points in the fourth quarter but that was not enough to lift to the win… De’Shanti Watts had a game-high 22 points to lead the Red Devils an two other Red Devils finished in double-digits as Taneal Evans finished with 15 points and Tinique Austin had 11 points… Dana Kinard, Asia Boyd and Grayson Taylor each finished with 2 points… The Red Devils fall to 4-2 overall and 2-1 in region play.
  • Boys: Chapman 83 – Clinton 69… In the final game of the night the Panthers completed the sweep of the Red Devils by taking an 83-69 win… The Panthers pulled out to a 20-14 lead after 8 minutes of play and led 44-30 at the half… They out rebounded the Red Devils 13-6 on the defensive boards in the first half and the Red Devils were only able to put about half of their offensive rebounds back in for points…The Panthers led 65-44 going into the final 8 minutes of play where the Red Devils showed their grit as they continued to fight outscoring the Panthers 25-18 but it was just too little to late… Afterwards Coach Eddie Romines commented that his team played hard but Chapman just played better… The Panthers’ Banks Atkins led all scorers with a game-high 24 points and Gavin Humphries finished with 18 points with 12 of them coming from 3-point range… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Austin Copeland who finished with 20 points and Wilson Wages with 12 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Justin Copeland and Taliek Fuller who both finished with 9 points, Wil Stewart 7Kimon Quarles 6, Tylon Scurry 4 and Jadden Copeland 2… The Red Devils fall to 1-5 overall and 0-2 in region play.
  • Red Devil Boys Play Tomorrow Night… The Red Devil varsity basketball schedule on-line at the athletic website shows that the varsity boys are hosting the Emerald Vikings tomorrow night with tipoff scheduled for 6:00 pm… Only the boys will be playing as the Emerald girls are going through a COVID 19 situation.

Laurens HS:

  • District 55 Athletics Down Again This Week… As you most of you already know Laurens District 55 will continue e-leaning again this week and there will be no students in the classroom again… With that being said it was also decided to suspend all athletic activities again this week… Hopefully they will be able to get back into action soon as the longer they are out the more likely it becomes they will cancel the winter sports altogether as there would be not enough time to get in the region schedules by the deadline for playoffs.

Laurens Academy:

  • Crusaders Scheduled to be Back on Court Tomorrow… The Laurens Academy Crusaders took last week off and so far I have not heard anything about them taking this week off…. So with that being said, they are scheduled to host Richard Winn tomorrow night in region action.
