Sports Report for Thursday, 1-28-2021

Local Notes:

Yesterday’ Audio Sports Report… Well those of you who faithfully listen to my sports report on WLBG each morning probably noticed that yesterday’s sports report sounded a lot like the day before… Good reason for that, it was the same one… A technical problem with the computer that plays recorded material is to blame… Hopefully that problem was solved by this morning… If you would like to listen to what was supposed to play yesterday click here… Sorry about that!

Clinton HS:

  • JV Basketball Tonight… The Red Devil JV basketball teams will host the Broome Centurions tonight starting with the girls’ game at 6:00 pm.

Laurens HS:

Varsity Basketball… The Laurens Raiders hosted the Red Raiders of Greenville HS last night as they played their second game in as many nights after being idle for over a month.

  • Girls: Greenville 72 – Laurens 33…  In girls’ action, the Red Raiders came into the game with an 8-1 overall record and 3-1 in region paly and when they left they had added another win to that record as they took a 72-33 win over Laurens… Just like Tuesday night at Greer, Laurens had trouble getting their offense going as they fell behind 18-3 after 8 minutes of play… Greenville scored at least 12 points in each of the other three quarters while the best Laurens could do was score 11 points in the second quarter… After the game Coach Kelly said her team is just having trouble getting shots to fall and are not playing as well as they should be at this point of the season but that could be due to the team in inability to practice and play the last few weeks… … Greenville’s J’Adore Young led all players with 20 points… Laurens was led by Qua Fortson who finished with 19 points on the strength of 5 three-point goals she made… D. Grand finished with 6 points, Angel Johnson 4, Mycale Revis 2 and Amillion Evans 2… The Raiders fall to 0-5 on the season and 0-2 in region play.
  • Boys: Greenville 63 – Laurens 43… In the boys’ game, Greenville completed the sweep of Laurens as they took a 63-43 win… Laurens actually led 12-11 after the first quarter and only trailed Grenville 24-19 at the half… The third quarter saw Laurens come out cold as they only managed 4 points while Greenville put up 22 points to take a 46-23 lead into the fourth quarter and that was too much of a hole for Laurens to climb out of… As Coach Chavis commented afterwards, Greenville’s defense picked up the base in the third quarter all but cutting off Laurens inside game and when his team did get a good luck at the basket they just could not get the shots to fall… Greenville had two players in double-digits and was led by Prometheus Franklin’s 23 points all but 6 of which came in the second half… Laurens was led by Ty Jackson who finished with 12 points… Others putting points on the board for the Raiders were KD Mosley with 6 while Chase Jackson, Josh Cureton and Preston Mahon all finished with 5 points each… Zy Miller and JQ Fair both finished with 3 points while Collin Gambrell and Isaiah Burnside both chipped in 2 points… Laurens falls to 2-10 overall and 0-2 in region play
  • Up Next… The Raiders will take to the court tomorrow night when they host the Greenwood Eagles for 3 games… There will be a JV boy’s game starting at 5:15 followed by the varsity games… We do plan on broadcasting the varsity games here on Real Radio WLBG and will go live somewhere about 6:30.

Wrestling Tonight… A quick reminder that the Raider wrestling team will be holding their only home match tonight as they host Eastside and Greenville… The action starts at 6:00 pm so come on out and cheer on the Raiders if you can.

JV Basketball This past Tuesday… The Raiders hosted the Greer Yellow Jackets

  • JV Girls: Greer 36 – Laurens 28… In the first game of the evening, the Lady Raiders fell to the Yellow Jackets by a score of 37-29… The score was only 19-17 Greer at the half but the Yellow Jackets came out of the locker room hotter than the Raiders as they outscored the Raiders 15-5 in the third quarter… The Raiders tried to come back outscoring the Yellow Jackets 6-3 in the final 6 minutes of play but they just could not climb out of the hole… The Raiders were led in scoring by Mylayja Tomson who had 10 points… Others scoring for the Raiders were Myangel Walker with 5, Destiny Anderson 4, Shaniya Chinn 3 and with 2 points each you have Talayshia Williams, Nyri Allen and Olivia Brockman.
  • JV Boys: Laurens 36 – Greer 26…  Now the news is better where the boys are concerned as the Raiders defeated Greer 36 to 26 by outsourcing Greer 31-15 in the second half… Laurens started slow only shooting 5% in the 1st half but was able to pick it up in the 2nd half they wound up shooting 20% for the game… Greer shoot 23% for the game… Laurens was 70% from the charity strip hitting 16/23 shoots… Laurens outrebounded Greer 43 to 26… Both teams took care of the basketball as Laurens had 19 turnovers and Greer had 15. After the game Coach Coleman said he was happy with the resiliency of the team coming back from an 11-5 deficit at the half… Mike Wormley led the Raiders with 9 points…  Hunter Nabors finished with 7 points, Demar Massey 5, Jordon Roberts 3, Devon Red 3, Vijay Austin 3, Marco Barnes 2, Noah Mosley 2, Mason Aiken 1 and Owen Pridgen 1.
