Sports Report for Monday, 2-1-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… The Red Devil boys’ basketball team traveled up to Spartanburg last Friday to take on the Broome Centurions… The Red Devils had played the Centurions at home the previous Monday and lost by a single point (51-50) and had high hopes of turning that score around.

  • Broome 67 – Clinton 55… Well the Red Devils increase their offensive output on Friday night by scoring 5 more points than they did Monday (55 vs.50) but the Centurions also scored more points than on Monday as they put 67 points on the board to take a 67-55 win… The Red Devils trailed 16-10 at the end of the first quarter but rallied to outscore Broome 19-10 to take a 29-26 lead into the locker room at the half… Clinton built on that lead early in the third quarter to go up 33-26 but about halfway through the quarter the Red Devils went cold and just could not by a basket and by the time the quarter ended the Centurions led 47-37… That put the Red Devils in a hole they just could not climb out of as the Centurions went on to take the win…   Except for that critical stretch in the third quarter Coach Eddie Romines was pleased with the Red Devil play and feels his team is still improving… The Centurions Adam Comer had a game-high 20 points to lead the Centurions and they also had 2 other players who scored in double-digits… Wil Stewart led the Red Devils with 17 points and Taliek Fuller was also in double-digits with 14 points… Peyton Pitts finished the night with 9 points, Justin Copeland 7, Austin Copeland 6 and Tylon Scurry 2… The Red Devils fall to 1-10 overall and 0-7 in region play.
  • Girls and Up Next… The Lady Red Devils did not play and although I don’t really know why if I had to bet why I would put my money on a COVID issue with one of the teams and again if I had to guess who I would pick Broome… According to the Red Devil athletic website the varsity teams will host Chapman tomorrow night while the JV teams travel to Chapman tonight.

Laurens HSThe Raider varsity basketball teams hosted the Greenwood Eagles last Friday night and the JV boys’ team also took to the court at LDHS to take on the Eagles prior to the varsity games.

  • Girls: Greenwood 43 – Laurens 36…  Heartbreaking would be the best word to describe the girls’ game as the Raiders came oh so close to taking their first win of the season but let it slip away as the Eagles took a 43 to 36 win over the Raiders… The Raiders led 20-17 at the half and 33-24 going into the final 8 minutes of play… In those final 8 minutes of play, Greenwood’s Erianna Wardlaw became unstoppable as she scored 12 of her game-high 21 points in the game while the Raiders as a team managed only 3 points missing 4 of 5 free throws as Greenwood took the win… Afterwards Coach Kelly said that the Raiders just missed too many shots down the stretch and committed too many turnovers… Raniya Jackson led the Raiders with 14 points and Qua Fortson was also in double-digits as she finished with 13 points… Only two other Raiders put points on the board as Angel Johnson scored 8 and MaCayle Revis scored 1.
  • Boys: Greenwood 62 – Laurens 42… Lately it seems that the Raider boys basketball team plays close in the first half and then tends to start the second half slow… Well that was the case again last Friday night… The Raiders only trailed by 2 at the half (26-24) but a cold third quarter where they only scored 9 points and the Eagles scored 16 allowed the Eagles to pull away to a 62-49 win over the Raiders… In that critical third quarter Greenwood’s Dalen Boyles hit a pair of three-point goals plus a pair of free throws and a 2-point bucket giving him 10 points in the quarter… He finished with a game-high 23 points…KD Mosley led the Raiders with 16 points all in the first half… T y Johnson was the only other Raider to score in double digits as he finished with 11 points… Zy Miller and JQ Fair both finished with 6 points, Collin Gambrell 4, Chase Jackson 3, Waldrick Burnside 3, and Preston Mahon 1.
  • JV Boys: Greenwood: Greenwood 41 – Laurens 23… Prior to the varsity games the Raiders JV boys’ basketball team took to the courts and the news is not good here either as the Eagles took a 41-23 win over the Raiders… The Eagles held the Raider scoreless in the second quarter taking a 24-5 lead into the locker room at the half…  The Raiders did cut into it in the third quarter outscoring the Eagles 12-5 but the Eagles “won” the fourth quarter 17-6 taking the win… I have reason to believe that Jordan Roberts led the Raiders with 9 points.
  • Up Next… The Raider JV teams will be traveling to Greer tonight to take on the Red Devil with the girls’ game starting at 5:30 while the varsity teams will be hosting Greer with the girls’ game starting at 6:00… I hope you can make it out to cheer on the varsity teams but if you can’t we plan on brining you the varsity games here on Real Radio WLBG and streaming live on the internet at www.wlbg.com… Also please remember that if you are planning on coming out you need to buy your tickets ahead on tome online and if you look in the Ticket Information section below you will find more information on how to do that.

Wrestling… The Raider wrestling team traveled to Eastside HS last Saturday to participate in the Region II Class AAAA Tournament…. The Raiders did well as one of them finished first in his weight class, five finished second in theirs and four others became alternates by finishing third.

  • First… Mason Parsons was the Raider who finished in first place in the 182 lb. weight class.
  • Second… The Raiders who finished second (and their weight class) were Josh Schubert (138), Myles Reppart (152), Zack King (195), Jack Pontoon (220) and Kole Lawson (285).
  • Third… The Raiders who finished third and are alternates in case the number one or two wrestlers can’t make it to the next stage due to injury or COVID issues are Colby Bridges (106), Pedro Juan (120), Brian Sheffield (132) and Robert Lawson (160).
  • Congratulations to all these Raiders for a fine showing in the tournament and if you want more details on how these and the other Raider wrestlers did click here.
