Sports Report for Wednesday, 2-3-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… The Red Devil varsity basketball teams hosted the Chapman Panthers last night in a pair of region basketball games.

  • Girls: Chapman 37 – Clinton 34… Coming into last night’s game the only region loss the Lady Red Devils had suffered was to Chapman 61-54 at Chapman… Thus the Red Devils had revenge on their minds and leading 25-12 going into the locker room at the half it looked like they were well on their way to accomplishing that… However basketball is a game that is composed of four quarters not just two and the Panthers outscored the Red Devils 25-9 in the second half to take a 37-34 win… Simply put the Red Devils went cold in the second half and Panthers got hot… Also the Panthers outrebounded the Red Devils in the second half (16-7) and the Red Devils made some critical turnovers down the stretch… Asia Anderson had a game-high 12 points to lead the Panthers while De’Shanti Watts had 11 points to lead the Red Devils… Tinique Austin had 8 points for the Red Devils wile Grayson Taylor finished with 7… Taneal Evans and Dana Kinard rounded out the Red Devil scoring with 4 points each… The Red Devils fall to 6-3 overall and 4-2 in region play.
  • Boys: Chapman 66 – Clinton 54… The Panthers completed the sweep of the Red Devils last night by taking 66-54 win… The Red Devils really played one of their better games of the season as they only trailed 31-27 at the half after being tied 13-13 after the first 8 minutes of play… The Red Devils got as close as one point (38-37 early in the third quarter and only trailed 41-39 with 2:37 left in the third quarter when they also went cold as the Panthers stretched their lead to 48-39 by the end of the third quarter… That trend of not being able to get good shots to fall for the Red Devils continued through the fourth quarter as the Panthers hit the majority of their free throws down the stretch to seal the win… After the game Coach Eddie Romines said he was proud of the way the team competed on both offense and defense but the difference in the game was the run Chapman made in the last two minutes of the third quarter…The Panthers were led by Miles Carter and Banks Atkins who both scored game-high 18 points… The Red Devils were led by Justin Copeland who finished with 13 points and Wil Stewart with 12… Also scoring for the Red Devils were Austin Copeland with 9, Taliek Fuller with 6, Wilson Wages 5, Jadden Copeland 5, Tylon Scurry 2 and Peyton Pitts 2…

Laurens HS The Laurens Raider varsity basketball teams were on the road last night to taking on the Greenville HS Red Raiders and the JV teams were at home hosting the Red Raiders.

  • Girls: Greenville 53 – Laurens 28… Shooting woes also plagued the Raider girls last night as they fell to the Red Raider 53-28… Greenville led 19-9 at the half and scored 22 points to Laurens 8 in the third quarter to ice the game… Tinsley Franklin and Taylor Pace led Greenville with 9 points each… The Raiders were led by Qua Fortson and Faith Jackson who each finished the game with 8 points each… Raniya Jackson finished with 7 points while “D” Grant finished with 2 points and Angel Johnson 1.
  • Boys… I did not hear from Coach Chavis last night on how the boys did but I did find a score on the internet that said Grenville took a 59-28 win over Laurens… I’ll try to confirm that for you today and have details on the game tomorrow.
  • JV Games… In girls’ action the Red Raider took a 32-19 win while in boys’ action the Laurens Raiders took a close 30-27 win… I’ll try to have more details on these games tomorrow.

Laurens AcademyAfter taking a little over a week off, the Crusader varsity basketball teams boarded the bus last night and traveled down to WW King to take on the Knights.

  • Girls: Crusaders 31 – Knights 8… The Crusader girls steam rolled the hapless Knights last night as they held them scoreless in the first and third quarters in route to a 31-8 win… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Payton Breen who went 4 for 4 from the floor for 8 points… Others putting points on the board for the Crusaders were SG Natiello and Olivia Huck who finished with 6 points each… Rylee Ballard finished with 5 points, Emily Suttles 4 and Elissa Hucks 2… The Crusaders improve to 6-8 overall and 3-3 in region play.
  • Boys: Knights 45 – Crusaders 36… The Knights turned the tables in boys’ action as they took a 45-36 win over the Crusaders… The game was pretty even in the first half as the Knights only led 19-17 at the half… The third quarter is where the Knights pulled away as they outscored the Crusaders 14-8 and then went on to the win… The Knights’ Trevor Fulmer had a game-high 20 points and Colton List finished with 16… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Thomas Lowry who finished with 17 points and Nicholas Rita who had 12… The only other Crusader to score was Clarence Bertoli who finished with 7 points… The Crusaders fall to 5-9 on the season and 3-3 in region play.
