Sports Report for Monday,

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… The Red Devil varsity basketball teams were on the road last Friday as they traveled down to Greenwood to take on the Emerald HS Vikings.

  • Girls: Emerald 38 – Clinton 30… Going into last Friday night’s game, The Lady Vikings and the Lady Red Devils were tied with 2 loses each in the top of Region 3 – AAA so there was a lot of importance in this game as the season winds down to a close… Unfortunately the news is not good for Red Devil fans as the Vikings took a 38-30 win… As Coach Gardner put it afterwards, his team is playing good defense but lately has been struggling to score…. The later was evident Friday as the Red Devils managed just 4 points in the first quarter and 9 in the second quarter and found themselves trailing 17-13 at the half… The Red Devils did outscore the Vikings in the third quarter to make the score 23-22 Vikings headed into the final 8 minutes of play… However the Vikings outscored the Red Devils 15-8 down the stretch to take the win… The Vikings were led by Kendall spearman who had a game-high 13 points… Dana Kinard was the only Red Devil scoring in double-digits as she finished with 11 points… Other putting points on the scoreboard for the Red Devils were De’Shanti Watts with 8 points, Tinique Austin 5, Taneal Evans 4 and Asia Boyd 2…. The Red Devils fall to 6-4 overall and 4-3 in region play.
  • Boys: Emerald 68 – Clinton 64 in OT… In boys’ action, the Red Devils lost a heartbreaker as they fell to the Vikings 68-64 in overtime… The Red Devils trailed 27-21 going into the locker room at the half but came out in the third quarter and outscored the Vikings 21-10 to take a 42-37 lead into the fourth quarter The Red Devils were still up by 7 points with a couple of minutes to play but the Vikings made a run and tied the game 59-59 to send it into overtime.. In the overtime, the Vikings made only one field goal but hit enough free throws to outscore the Red Devil 9-5 to take the win… Afterward coach Eddie Romines commented “I feel this was our best game of the year, but we just didn’t make enough plays or make enough free throws late in the game… Emerald is probably going to be a playoff team, and we played great against them for most of the game.”…  Wil Stewart led the Red Devils with a game-high 29 points with 21 of them coming from behind the three-point arc… Taliek Fuller was also I double-digits for the Red Devils with 10 points… Also scoring for the Red Devils were Austin Copeland with 8 points, Kimon Quarles and Jadden Copeland 4, Justin Copeland and Tylon Scurry 3, Peyton Pitts 2 and Wilson Wages 1… The Red Devils fall to 1-12 overall and 0-9 in region play
  • Up Next… The Red Devil JV basketball teams will host the Woodruff Wolverines today starring with girl’s action at 6:00 pm and the varsity teams will close out the regular season tomorrow night traveling to Woodruff.

Laurens HSThe varsity boys’ basketball team traveled to Eastside last Friday night to take on the Eastside Eagles while the JV boys hosted the Eastside Eagles… Neither girl’s team played because of COVID issues with the Eagles.

  • Varsity Boys: Eastside 54 – Laurens 39… Sorry I do not have any other details but if I get them today I will bring them to you tomorrow.
  • JV Boys: Eastside 31 – Laurens 30… In JV boys’ action, the Raiders lost a heartbreaker as the Eagles hit a 3-point shot at the buzzer to take a 31-30 win over the raiders…. The game was back and forth all night with the Raiders trailing 16-15 at the half but the raiders came out in the third quarter and put 12 points on the board to take a 27-22 lead into the final 6 minutes of play… In those final 6 minutes the raiders went cold scoring only 3 points while the Eagles came back to score the game winner as the buzzer sounded to take the win… Mike Wormley had a game-high 13 points to lead the raiders… Others putting points on the scoreboard were Devon Redd with 7 points, Jaylen Simpson 4 while Jordon Roberts, Owen Pridgen and Hunter Nabors had 2 points each.
  • Up Next…The JV teams will travel to Greenwood today to take on the Eagles with the girls’ game starting at 5:15 while on Tuesday there will be a pair of boys’ only games… The JV boys will travel to Eastside for a 5:30 contest with the Eagles while the boys’ varsity team will host Eastside starting at 6:00 pm on Senior Night… We do plan on brining you that game hear on Real radio WLBG.

Laurens Academy… Last Friday the Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Newberry Academy to take on the Eagles in a pair of varsity basketball games.

  • Girls: Newberry 71 – LA 38…The Lady Eagles came into last Friday night’s game with a 19-0 record and once again they proved that they were the “Real Deal” as they took a 71-38 win over the Crusaders… The score was only 12-9 Eagles at the end of the first quarter of play but they increased their lead to 36-23 at the half and never looked back… The Eagles had three players scoring in double-digits with Daja Taylor having a game-high 24 points… Olivia Hick was the only Crusader scoring in double-digits as she finished with 11 points… Rylee Ballard and Emily Suttles finished with 6 points, Payton Breen 5, SG Natiello 4, Elissa Hicks 2 and rounding out the scoring for the Crusaders with 1 point each… The Crusaders fall to 6-9 overall and 3-4 in the region.
  • Boys: Newberry 53 – LA 31… In the final game of the night at Newberry, the Eagles made it a sweep of the Crusaders as they took a 53-21 win… The Eagles only led by a point (10-9) at the end of the first quarter and by 3 (21-18) at the half but pulled away from the Crusaders in the second half outscoring the Crusaders 32–13 to pull away to the 53-31 win… The Eagles were led in scoring by Anthony McClean who finished with a game-high 22 points and Payton Gardner with 20… The leading scorers for the Crusaders were Thomas Lowry and Andrew Codington who had 8 points each… Also scoring for the Crusaders were Clarence Bertoli with 7 points, Nicholas Rita 6 and Buddy Baker 2… The Crusaders fall to 5-10 and 3-4 on the season… The Crusaders are scheduled to host Wardlaw tomorrow.

Clinton HS

  • Home Games… Clinton HS has issued guidelines on how many people will be allowed into the main gym for contest (386) and other items pertaining to COVID 19 issues… To see those and more information about this click hereA couple of important things to point out are that no tickets will be sold at the door, they must be bought online… This applies to JV and varsity games and if you click on the link I provided above you will find where to purchase the tickets online… Also there are special codes to apply if you are the parent of a participating athlete to help ensure you get a ticket but you must purchase by 4:00 pm the day of the game to be sure you get a ticket(s)… There are several other things you need to know so again click here to go the CHS athletic website where all of this is explained… To go directly to the page where you purchase tickets click here.

  • Spring Baseball & Softball Registration Now Open… The month of February is getting closer by the day so that means it’s time to sign up for baseball in the Laurens area and both baseball and softball in the Clinton area…. Clinton Area… The Clinton YMCA will have 5 age divisions of baseball starting with youth as young as 3 years old all the way up to 12…. There will be 3 divisions of softball for the girls… The deadline to register is Tuesday February 9th… For more information click hereLaurens Area… The Laurens YMCA will be having Teeball and Weeball for youth ages 3-6… The City of Laurens Parks and Recreation will have 3 age groups of Little League baseball (L3) for youth ages 7-12… The deadline to register is February 13th… For more information click here
  • Raider Winter Baseball Camp… The Laurens Raider Baseball program will be hosting a 2-day baseball camp on Friday, February 12 and Saturday, February 13 at Laurens High School’s baseball field for 1st-6th graders… Camp times will be 6:00pm-8:30pm on Friday and 10:00am-12:30pm on Saturday… The camp fee is $40/camper… Deadline to register for camp is Friday, February 5… To register, please fill out the google form provided below… Participants should dress appropriately for the cold weather and bring a baseball glove and bat (if possible)…Due to Covid-19, organizers will follow all CDC Protocols which include wearing face masks (when not actively participating), social distancing and the use of a personal water bottle…If you have any questions, please email Coach Tori Patterson at kjpatterson@laurens55.orgTo go to the registration form click here.
  • Tae Kwon Do Returns to Laurens YMCA… Tae Kwon Do classes are returning to the Laurens Family YMCA starting on October 5, 2020… These classes are for youth 7-15 years old and are $25 per month… Classes will be held each Monday from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm… If you have more questions call the Y at 984-2626
