Sports Report for Tuesday, 2-9-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… The Red Devil JV teams hosted the Woodruff Wolverines last night and there is good news here as both Red Devil teams won.

  • Girls: Clinton 15 – Woodruff 10… In girls’ action, the Red Devils took a 15-10 win whose outcome was in doubt until the final 6 minutes of play… The reason I say that is that the he wolverines led 8-7 at the end of three quarters of play… In the fourth quarter the Red Devils picked up on their offense as they outscored the wolverines 8-2 to take the win…. The Red Devils were led in scoring by Fantasia Walker who had 6 points… Jordon Hill and Marcey Campbell finished with 4 points each… Hannah Gary rounded out the Red Devils scoring with 1 point.
  • Boys: Clinton 54 – Woodruff 32… Now in boys’ action, the Red Devils took a 54-32 win over the wolverines… The only other information I have on the game is that Keividrick Richardson had 17 points to lead the Red Devils.
  • Up Next… The Red Devil varsity basketball teams will be on the road tonight as they travel to Woodruff HS to take on the Wolverines with girls’ action starting at 6:00 pm.

Laurens HSLast night the Raider varsity basketball teams and the boys’ JV team traveled down to Greenwood HS to take on the Eagles.

  • Girls: Laurens 49 – Greenwood 44… In varsity girls’ action, the Raiders picked up their first win of the season as the Raiders defeated the Eagles 49-44… The Raiders trailed right from the start and as they started the fourth quarter they found themselves down 36-26… The Raiders scored the first 9 points of the fourth quarter to pull within 2 points (37-35) with 6:44 left in the game… Every time the Eagles would start to pull away the Raiders would not panic and would score themselves to keep it close… With 28.2 seconds left in the game and the Eagles up 44-43, Qua Fortson missed two free throws but Angel Johnson got the rebound and put it back in to put the Raiders up by one (45-44)….Greenwood then turned the ball over a couple of times as Johnson hit another basket and Raniya Jackson hit a pair of free throws with 1 second left to give the Raiders a couple of “insurance points” and then a couple of seconds later the Raiders celebrated… After the game Coach Kelly was praised her team for not getting down and sticking to the game plan… Since this was the last game of the season for the Raiders (the Eastside girls can’t play tonight due to COVID issues) the win gives the Raiders some momentum heading into the off season… Greenwood’s Arianna Wardlaw and the Raiders Qua Fortson both finished with 19 points to lead their teams in scoring… Raniya Jackson finished with 16 points and Angel Johnson 11 to give the Raiders three players scoring in double digits… Faith Jackson had the other 3 points for the Raiders.
  • Boys: Greenwood 55 – Laurens 47… In the boys’ game, Greenwood turned the tables taking a 55-47 win over the Raiders… The two reasons the Eagles were able to take the win was that they had fewer turnovers than the Raiders and the fact that the Raiders had two stretches in the game where they just could not get the shot to fall… With 7:22 left in the first half the Raiders scored to make the game 8-7 Eagles… However the Eagles scored the next 18 points before the Raiders scored again and at the half the Eagles led 27-13 as the Raiders did get a flurry of points late in the half… The Raiders came out in the third quarter and again were cold as the Eagles scored the first 8 points of the second half before the Raiders scored and led 37-24 going into the final 8 minutes of play… To their credit the Raiders never stopped trying but just could not get out of the hole the two cold spells caused… Greenwood’s Dalen Boyles led all scorers with 18 points… The Raiders were led in scoring by JQ Fair who finished with 16 points and Chase Jackson who had 13… Both Zy Miller and Isiah Burnside finished with 6 points each, KD Mosley 4 and Waldrick Burnside 2… The Raiders fall to 2-15 on the season and 0-7 in region play.
  • JV Boys: Greenwood 50 – Laurens 9… Now before the varsity games took place, the Raider JV boys took to the court as they took on the Eagles… Let’s just put it this way, the Raiders’ offense just could not get in gear as they fell 50-9 to the Eagles… The Raiders were actually held scoreless in second quarter as the Eagles led 21-3 at the half… Mason Aiken led the Raiders in scoring with 5 points.
  • Up Next… The Raiders close out their season tonight as the JV boys travel to Eastside to take on the Eagles in a 5:30 contest while the varsity boys will host the Eagles at 6:00 pm on senior Night… Both the Eastside girls’ teams are dealing with COVID issues so the Lady Raiders have finished their season… I hope you can make it out to the game at LDHS tonight but if you can’t we will bring it to you live her on Real radio WLBG and on the internet at www.wlbg.com

Laurens AcademyThe Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Richard Winn Academy to take on the Eagles.

  • Girls: RWA 46 – LA 26… Crusaders had a cold shooting night as they just could not get their offense in gear… They scored only 2 points in the first quarter as the Eagles jumped out to a 26-7 lead at the half… The Crusaders tried to come back in the third quarter as they outscored the Eagles 19-7 to make it 33-26 Eagles going into the last 8 minutes of play… However the “wheels came off the bus” as the Crusaders were held scoreless as the Eagles went on to take the 16-26 win… Olivia Huck was the only Crusader in double-digits as she led the team with 11 points… SG Natiello and Payton Breen both finished with 6 points while Emily Suttles rounded out the Crusader scoring with 3 points.
  • Boys… Sorry but no one sent me the results of the boys’ game… If I get information on this game today I will bring it to you tomorrow.
  • Up Next… The Crusaders will be hosting the Wardlaw Patriots tonight starting at 5:30… It is also Senior Night for the Crusaders.
