Sports Report for Thursday, 2-11-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Two Red Devils Sign With Erskine… I need to catch you up with something that happened at Clinton HS last Friday that I almost let slip through the crack… Two senior football players signed letters of intent with Erskine College to continue their education and football careers… The two student-athletes are Kimon Quarles and Christopher Kennedy-Vance… Both of them played mostly on defense for the Red Devils this past season and are expected to do the same for Erskine… Erskine is restarting their football program after a 50 year hiatus in a couple of weeks… Kimon plans on majoring in sports management while CK is a little undecided but leaning toward sports or business management… Congratulations to both of them!

Laurens HS:

  • JV Boys: Eastside 41 – Laurens 38… I need to do some catching up with the JV boys’ basketball team which played their final game of the season on Tuesday night as they traveled up to Eastside HS to take on the Eagles… The Raiders jumped out to a 10-7 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Eagles rebounded in the second quarter to take a 22-16 lead into the locker room at the half and then go on to take a 41-38 win over the Raiders… The Raiders trailed 31-23 going into the final 6 minutes of play and to their credit they fought back and outscored the Eagles in that final quarter but just could not come all the way back… Devon Redd led the Raiders in scoring with 25 points… Other scoring for the Raiders were Mason Aiken and Hunter Nabors with 4 points each, Jordan Roberts and Owen Pridgen had 2 points each while Mike Wormley rounded out the Raider scoring with 1 point… The JV girls did not play as the Eastside girls are dealing with a COVID issue.
  • Senior Night… Tuesday night was Senior Night at LDHS where senior basketball players and cheerleaders were honored… The Lady Raider basketball team had no seniors but the Raider boys’ team did… The Raider senior boys are Colin Gambrell, Zy Miller, JQ Fair and Chase Jackson… Sorry but I did not get the names of the senior cheerleaders.

Laurens Academy:

  • Senior Night… Tuesday night was also Senior Night for the Laurens Academy Crusaders… The Lady Crusaders have one senior and that is JK (Julia) Marlett…. The boys’ team has 5 seniors and they are Thomas Lowry, Hunter Mullinax, Nicholas Rita, Zachary Mullinax and Caio Rita.
  • More Post-Season Football Honors… Recently the High School Sports report published its list of various recipients of different honors for both SCHSL and SCISA football for the recently completed season… Five Laurens Academy Crusaders were on their list of players who received post season honors… First Thomas Lowry was named as one of three players to share the prestigious Lonnie Robinson MVP Award for all classifications of SCISA football… This may be the first time that a SCISA 8-Man football team member has been the honor of this award… He threw for 2679 yards this past season completing 195 of 310 attempts and had 47 TD passes… He also used his feet to gain 1578 yard rushing in 151 carries and scored 19 TDs this way… The Crusaders also had 4 players named to the HSSR-SCISA 8-Mann All-State Football team and they are Carson Venable, Cal Robertson, Caio Rita and Clarence Bertoli… If you want to see the entire list of honors awarded by the HSSR for both SCHSL and SCISA football click here…  Congratulations to Thomas and the other Crusaders on these honors!
