Sports Report for Wednesday, 2-17-2021

Local Notes:

Laurens HS:

  • 50 Inning Game This Saturday… Each year the Raider softball and baseball teams get together and split into coed squads and face off in a 50 inning one-pitch softball game… This is always a lot of fun to watch and helps raise money for the teams to help pay for things that the normal school athletic budget just doesn’t cover… They will have concessions and the action will start at 10:00 am with a break for lunch… If you get a chance come on out and support the Raider squads.

Laurens Academy:

  • Girls: LA 45 – Anderson Christian 28… The Lady Crusader basketball team closed out its regular season last night with a 45-28 win over the Anderson Christian Lions at Anderson Christian… The Crusaders jumped out to a 16-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and then outscored the Lions in every quarter but the last (12-11 Lions) and even held the Lions scoreless in the third quarter as they rolled to the win… They managed to do this with a couple of players out with non-COVID related injuries… Payton Breen had a game-high 16 points to lead the Crusaders with Elissa Hucks close behind with 15 points… Only two other Crusaders scored and they were Rylee Ballard with 8 points and SG Natiello with 6… The Crusaders end the regular season with an 8-12 overall record and 5-7 in region play… They will find out today or tomorrow whether or not that is good enough to get into the SCISA playoffs…. The Crusader boys’ team did not play.
  • Marlett Gets 150th Win… Last night’s win marked the 150th win Jason Marlette as the Head Coach for the Laurens Academy girls’ team… During the seven years at the helm of the Lady Crusaders his teams have won 4  Region Tournament Championships, 3 Region Championships and of course 2 State Championships… After the game he commented “I was a surprise to be recognized for 150 wins.  I did not realize it at all.  It made me think back to all of the great young ladies I’ve been fortunate to Coach these last 7 years.  They were responsible for those wins along with assistant coach Sandy Moore.   Also having Reagan Williamson alongside this year was been great and she played the majority of those games.  I’ve been blessed to Coach them.”
