Local Notes:

Laurens Academy:

  • Lady Crusaders Make the SCISA Tournament… Yesterday it was announced that the Laurens Academy Crusader girls’ basketball team had made the SCISA Class A Playoffs again this year… The Crusaders first round game will be held tomorrow at Wilson Hall (Gym A down in Sumter) and they will be taking on Low Country Prep at 4:30 pm… Now if you would like to see the entire Class A Girls Bracket click here… Couple of other notes… The bracket shows the Crusader’s game tomorrow starting at 6:30 pm but an email from Tiffany Tarver Laurens Academy’s SID says that the correct time is 4:30 pm… Also a note about attendance… School sites should be under 40% occupancy by SCISA policies (restricting every other bleacher/restricting the area behind each bench)…  Typical state tournament attendance for an individual game is under 150 fans…  Tickets will be for one game and then the gym will be cleared… Ticket prices will be: Adults: $10 / Students: $5… FACE MASKS are REQUIRED to be worn at ALL times by fans…. Good Luck to the Crusaders.

Laurens HS:

  • 50 Inning Game This Saturday… Each year the Raider softball and baseball teams get together and split into coed squads and face off in a 50 inning one-pitch softball game… This is always a lot of fun to watch and helps raise money for the teams to help pay for things that the normal school athletic budget just doesn’t cover… They will have concessions and the action will start at 10:00 am with a break for lunch… If you get a chance come on out and support the Raider squads.

College Baseball… Well the college baseball season gets started tomorrow so let’s take a quick look at a few things related to that.

  • Preseason DI Rankings… There are several preseason polls out there and I’m going to use the poll that is the default poll if you go to the NCAA website looking for the DI polls and that is the DIBASEBALL.COM TOP 25 poll… That poll shows that Florida is ranked preseason #1 with the next 4 teams being UCLA, Texas Tech, Vanderbilt and Louisville in that order… Spots 6-10 are held by Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Arkansas, Texas and TCU…  South Carolina did check in at #18 in that poll… If you would like to see the entire poll click here.
  • ACC Preseason Poll… The ACC baseball coaches have also voted on who thy think will come out on top in the ACC and for the third year in a row Louisville was picked to finish first overall… They were picked to win the Atlantic Division with NC State finishing second in the division… Clemson was picked to finish fourth in the Atlantic Division…  The picked Miami to finish first in the Coastal Division with Virginia close behind at #2 in the division… To see the entire preseason ranking for the ACC click here… By the way Clemson is set to host Cincinnati at 4:00 pm to open their baseball season.
  • SEC Preseason Poll…  The SEC baseball coaches have also voted on how they think the various teams will finish and since Florida has a #1 preseason national ranking it should be of no surprise that the Gators are also expected to finish first in the SEC… They are picked to finish first in the Eastern Division with Vanderbilt finishing second in the division… South Carolina was predicted to finish #4 in the Eastern Division… The coaches picked Ole Miss to win the Western Division followed by their arch rival Mississippi State coming in at #2 in the division… To see the entire SEC Preseason Poll click here… The Gamecocks open their season tomorrow at 4:00 pm hosting Dayton.
  • Southern Conference Preseason Poll … The eight baseball coaches in the southern Conference have picked the Samford Bulldogs to finish first in their preseason rankings… Wofford was picked to finish in a tie with UNC-Greensboro for the 3 spot… As you may or may not recall, Furman has dropped baseball 😠 … To see the entire posting about this on the Southern Conference website click here… By the way Wofford will open its season tomorrow as they travel to Gardner-Webb for a 4:00 pm contest.
  • Big South Preseason Poll… The Big South baseball coach voted two-time defending champion Campbell as the preseason favorite… The Presbyterian Blue Hose are picked to finish fifth in the eight-team conference… To see the entire preseason poll click here… PC is scheduled to open their season tomorrow at Auburn in a 5:00 pm contest.
