Sports Report for Friday, 2-26-2021

Local Notes:

Laurens Academy:

  • MS Baseball: LA 13 (14) – Oakbrook Prep 1… The Laurens Academy middle school baseball team traveled up to Oakbrook Prep in Spartanburg yesterday to take on the Knights to open their season. Good news for Crusader fans as Coach Tollison tells me the Crusaders took a 14-1 win in 5 innings… Now Oakbrook Prep scored the game on GameChanger and they had the final score as 13-1 and I am going to give you a little bit of information about the game based on their scoring of the game… The Crusades jumped out to a 4-0 lead plating 4 runs in the top of the first… The Crusaders added 6 runs in the top of the second while the Knight got their only run in the bottom of the second… The Crusaders added at least 3 more runs in the third inning and then cruised to the win… Again according to Oakbrook Prep scoring the Crusaders had 12 hits to the Knights 5… Lee Carrol and Ethan Price led the Crusaders going 3 for 3 and one of Price’s hits was a double… It looks like Braydon Burke took the win going 4 innings and giving up the 1 earned run on 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2.
  • Varsity Today???… Now if you have a schedule for the Crusader boys’ varsity team it shows the Crusaders are supposed to be at home today for a 6:00 pm contest with Northside Christian… It was announced earlier this week that the game is now scheduled to be played at Northside Christian at the same time… Now let’s see if Mother Nature says No Game due to the expected rain today.

High School Basketball Playoffs… A quick reminder that for you high school basketball junkies I have links to the entire SCHSL and SCISA playoff brackets in a posting in the Featured Sports section on our homepage at www.wlbg.com… You can also go to that posting by clicking here… Taking a quick look at how region members of the regions Clinton and Laurens belong to you find:

  • Clinton, Class AAA Region 3Girls: Emerald and Chapman represented the region in the girls’ portion of the brackets… Both teams were eliminated in first round games as Emerald lost to Southside 69-51 and Chapman lost to Blue Ridge 66-59…. Boys: Chapman and Woodruff were the two boys’ teams representing the region in the boys’ portion of the playoffs… Chapman lost to Blue Ridge 70-54 in a first round game while Woodruff defeated Berea 63-56 in their first round game but lot to Keenan 64-48 in their second round contest.
  • Laurens, Class AAAA Region 2Girls:  Greenville and Greer represented Region III, Class AAAA in the girls’ bracket… Greer lost their first round game to South Pointe by a score of 55-52… Meanwhile Greenville defeated Catawba Ridge 73-35 in first round action but fell to Westside 58-47 in second round action… Boys: Greenville and Greer were also the region teams that made it into the boys’ playoff bracket… Believe it or not Greer lost its first round game to South Pointe just like the girls did but the final score was 54-47… Greenville did win their first round game against Lancaster 62-56 and also defeated Travelers Rest 58-51 last night to advance to the upper state finals Wednesday and will be taking on South Pointe who defeated AC Flora last night 60-58

College Baseball Notes… The college baseball season has been underway for about a week now so let’s take a look at PC, Clemson and South Carolina baseball.

  • PC: The Blue Hose baseball team is 0-4 on the young season as they lost 3 games out at Auburn over the weekend and lost their home opener Wednesday to Wofford 11-4… For more information on these games click here which will take you to their season schedule posting where recaps of completed games are available… Weather permitting they are scheduled to travel to Eastern Kentucky for a doubleheader tomorrow and a single game on Sunday.
  • Clemson… The Tigers started their season last weekend with a 3-game sweep of Cincinnati at home… For more information on these games click here which will take you to their season schedule posting where recaps of completed games are available.
  • South Carolina… The South Carolina Gamecocks are 4-0 on the season as they swept a 3-game series from Dayton at home last weekend and then defeated Winthrop 12-4 Tuesday in Columbia… For more information on these games click here which will take you to their season schedule posting where recaps of completed games are available.
  • Clemson vs. South Carolina Weekend… This weekend is the weekend that the Tigers and the Gamecocks battle it out on the diamond… True this is earlier in the season than it usually is but in this COVID 19 world almost everything has changed as conferences are limiting non-conference games and most of them taking place early in the season…. Weather permitting, the first game will be this afternoon at Clemson with first pitch scheduled for 4:00 pm… The second game is scheduled for Saturday at Flour Field in Greenville and again it starts at 4:00 pm… The series finale will take place at Founders Park in Columbia on Sunday and first pitch is scheduled for 1:30 pm… Friday’s game will be on ACC Network Extra with the final two games on SEC Network Plus.
