Clinton Project to Cost Only 1/3rd Of Estimated Cost

Work is to now proceed to connect sewer service to the City of Clinton’s Spec Building in the Clinton Corporate Park. At Monday night’s March meeting of Clinton City Council, Interim City Manager Thomas Higgs asked that council authorize Public Works Director Joey Meadors to enter into a contract for extending extend sewer service to the city’s spec building on SC Highway 72 just east of Interstate 26.

The city utilized the services of engineering firm Thomas and Hutton of Columbia to plan the project, seek bids from qualified contractors and supply a recommendation to the city.  They had estimated the cost of the project at $184,195.00.

In a letter dated February 15th, Thomas and Hutton recommended awarding the contract to SM Grading and Excavating of Jonesville, South Carolina for much less than the original estimate.  SM’s bid was $54,675.00. The letter also stated that references provided by the contractor had been checked. It further reminded City Council that SM Grading had successfully completed projects for Clinton in the past.  Their bid was the lowest of six bids received.

City Council’s approved of Mr. Higg’s request was by a unanimous vote.
