Sports Report for Wednesday, 3-3-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Girls Soccer: Clinton 7 – Newberry 0… The Red Devil girls soccer team opened its regular season last night with a 7-0 win over the Newberry Bulldogs at home… The Lady Red Devils were led by Lauren Wargo who scored 5 goals in the first half… Clinton’s other goals were by Riley Gowan and Lindsey Pysell…  For more information on this match and comments from Coach Benson click here… By the way the JV squad also took a 2-0 win over the Bulldogs with Gracie baker and Sydney Minor each scoring a goal.
  • Boys Soccer: Clinton Wins on Penalty Kicks… The Red Devil boys’ soccer team also took a win over the Bulldogs yesterday at Newberry but they had to resort to penalty kicks to determine the winner… The Red Devils trailed 2-0 in the second half but were able to come back and tie the match on goals by Bradley Frazier and JP Snelgrove… Neither team was able to score in overtime and they went to penalty kicks to decide the winner… There the Red Devils found the goal on 4 shots while the Bulldogs were only able to convert twice thus giving Clinton the win… For more information on this match and comments from Coach Hammond click here… The team will be back in action today as they host Dixie HS in their home opener at 7:00 pm with the JV boys also hosting Dixie at 5:30.

Laurens HS:

  • Lawson Headed to State Wrestling Tournament… Last Saturday 6 Raider wrestlers traveled up to Eastside HS to participate in the Upper State Class AAAA Individual Wrestling Tournament… Those six wrestlers (and their weight classes) were Josh Schubert (138), Myles Reppart (152), Mason Parsons (182), Zack King (195), Jack Pontoon (220) and Kole Lawson (285)… Junior Cole Lawson lost his first match but was able to fight back through the consolation bracket and won three straight matches which means he finished third and qualified for the State Championship Tournament which will be held at Dreher HS this Saturday starting at 4:00 pm… If you would like more information on how all the Raider wrestlers did last Saturday click here… There will be no fans allowed in the venue but you can watch the matches if you subscribe to the NFHS Network… For more information on how to do that click here… Congratulations to all these Raider wrestlers for qualifying to participate in last Saturday’s tournament and especially to Kole for making the State Tournament… Go Raiders!

Presbyterian College Updates:

  • Men’s Basketball: Hampton 67 – PC 65… The Big South Men’s Basketball Tournament started last weekend and the #10 seeded Blue Hose saw their season come to an end as they fell to the #7 seeded Hampton Pirates up in Virginia by a score of 67-65… PC trailed 36-25 at the half and fought back to take a one-point lead with under 10 seconds to play only to have the Pirates hit a three-point bucket with under 3 seconds to play to take the win… PC’s Owen McCormack led all scorers with a career-high 22 points… For more information on this game click here… PC finished the season with a 7-15 overall record and 5-12 in Big South play.
  • Men’ Basketball: Two PC Players Pick Up Post Season Honors… Late last week PC’s Rayshon Harrison was named the Big South Freshman-of-the-Year as well as Second-Team-All-Conference Honors… Owen McCormack was also named to the All-Academic Team… For more information about whey these two athletes were chosen for these honors click here.
  • Women’s Basketball: PC 61 – Winthrop 41… Last night the Lady Blue Hose basketball team rolled to a 61-41 win over the Winthrop Eagles up in Rock Hill… For more information on this game click here… The Blue Hose and the Eagles will get together again today at 6:00 pm for the final game of the regular season for the Blue Hose… The game will again be in Rock Hill and can be seen on ESPN+… By the way, last night’s win gave the Blue Hoe a first round bye in the Big South Women’s Basketball Tournament… That means the Blue Hose will start participation in the tournament next Monday against an opponent yet to be determined and at a location yet to be determined.

  • Clinton HS… Clinton HS has released information and guidelines concerning fan attendance at all home athletic contest this spring…  To see their press release concerning this click here… One of the things mentioned is the option to buy season tickets for each individual spring sport and the fact that tickets must be bought online ahead of time and that  no tickets will be sold at the gate.  To purchase tickets for home contest at Clinton HS click here.

This and That

  • Laurens YMCA 17th Annual Golf for Kids… Once again this year the Laurens YMCA and PRTC are teaming up to hold their annual Golf for Kids Tournament at Lakeside Country Club on Saturday March 27th… This is one of their largest fundraisers for the Y’s Scholarship Program which provides scholarships for those youth unable to participate in Y programs due to financial hardships… In 2020 the Y awarded more than $94,200 in financial assistance… The format will be two-18 man teams with captains strategically pairing players based on handicaps… Tee off will be at 10:00 am on March 27th… For more information call the Y at 984-2626 and you can contact Brian Harlan by email at brian@lakelandsymca.org for more information.
  • Tae Kwon Do Returns to Laurens YMCA… Tae Kwon Do classes are returning to the Laurens Family YMCA starting on October 5, 2020… These classes are for youth 7-15 years old and are $25 per month… Classes will be held each Monday from 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm… If you have more questions call the Y at 984-2626
