Sports Report for Friday, 9-17-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Tennis: Clinton 6 – Broome 0… The Red Devil girls’ tennis team was back in action yesterday as they traveled to Broome to take on the Centurions… Again there is good news for Red Devil fans as the team took a 6-0 win to run their season record and region record to 2-0… Mary Catherine Daily (6-0, 6-0) Chandler Dailey (6-0, 6-0), Gracie Spangler (6-0, 6-0), Reese Gowan (6-0, 6-0) and Kimora Wesley (6-0, 6-0) all very one-sided wins in singles action… The #2 doubles team composed of Gracie Wiggins and Libby Dailey played and defeated their opponents (6-0, 6-0) very convincingly…. The team will be back in action next Tuesday hosting the Chapman Panthers.
  • JV Football: Clinton 34 – Blue Ridge 0… Last night the Red Devil JV football team traveled up to Blue Ridge to take on the Tigers… I don’t have any details on the game but I can tell you that the Red Devils took a 34-0 win… Let’s hope the varsity team can do just as well tonight against the Tigers at Wilder Stadium… Go Big Red!
  • Red Devils host Winless Blue Ridge… After big 51-0 win over Calhoun County last Friday night, the varsity football team will try to extend its record to 4-0 by taking a win against Blue Ridge tonight at Wilder Stadium…  Blue Ridge comes into the game 0-2 losing its opening game to Woodmont 57-27 and then taking two weeks off… They were back in action last week losing to Travelers Rest 62-7…. By the way it is also Homecoming for the Red Devils tonight.

Laurens HS:

  • JV Football: Gators 34 – Raiders 0… Last night the Raider JV team hosted the Gators of River Bluff HS at KC Hanna Stadium… Let’s hope the final score is not indicative of what will happen tonight down at River Bluff when the varsity teams get together and the Gators took a 34-0 win over the Raiders… The Raiders had not played since their opening loss to Clinton and practice has been limited due to COVID contact quarantines… That time off was evident as the Raiders had way to many turnovers and penalties in the game.., They did get close to scoring right at the end of the first half when tome ran out in the half as they were inside the Gator 5 yard line… In their last possession of the contest they also drove down to the Gator 20 but with little time left on the clock just could not get the ball across the goal line.
  • Raiders Travel to River Bluff Tonight … The varsity teams will get together tonight down at River Bluff… Both teams come into the game 1-2… The Gators won their opening game with Lugoff-Elgin 28-7 then lost to Spring Valley 33-10 and Nation Ford 28-21… They were off last week… The school’s address is 320 Corley Mill Rd, Lexington, SC 29702 in case you need it to navigate to the school… I am sure the team would love to see a large number of Raider fans there so plan on going if you can (see information below) but if not you can catch all the action on Real Radio WLBG and on the internet at www.wlbg.com
  • Ticket Information for River Bluff Game… If everything goes as planned the Raiders football teams will get back into action this week… The JV team will, be hosting the River Bluff Gators tonight at 6:30 at KC Hanna Stadium… The varsity is scheduled to travel to River Bluff Friday night for a 7:30 contest with the Gators… River Bluff has let us know that there will be NO TICKET SOLD AT THE GATE          and you must purchase your tickets ahead of time online… To go to the webpage where River Bluff sells there tickets click here.
  • Fan Buss to River Bluff… There will be a fan bus going to River Bluff HS this Friday night… If you want to ride down and back on it be in front of LDHS no later 6:00 pm as that is when the bus will leave… The cost for the ride is $5… That price does NOT cover the cost of admission once you get there… You must purchase your ticket online as no tickets will be sold at the gate… See the posting just above this one for that information… If you have any questions about the fan bus call the Laurens School District Transportation office at 682-9117.

Laurens Academy:

  • Volleyball Teams… Last night the Crusader volleyball teams hosted the Greenwood Christian Hawks… the only information I have is the final scores and they are all good as the Crusaders won all three matches… In middle school action the Crusaders won by a score of 2-1… A group of younger varsity players banded together to form a JV team and they also won by a score of 2-0… And finally the Crusaders completed the sweep of the Hawks by taking a tight 3-2 win in varsity action
  • MS Football… The Crusader middle school football team had its first game of the season yesterday as thy traveled down to Richard Winn to take on the Eagles… I hate to have to report that the Crusaders fell by a score of 48-6… The Crusaders only score came in the 3rd quarter when Braydon Burke connected with Ethan Collins on a scoring pass.
  • Crusaders at Home Tonight… The Crusader varsity football team will be at home tonight for a game with the Cathedral Academy Generals at 7:30… Of course the Crusaders are looking for their first win of the season while the Generals come in with what I believe is a 1-2 record… Good Luck to the Crusaders tonight!

Major League Baseball

  • Braves and Rockies Postponed (Cancelled?)… The Braves and the Rockies were unable to play the last game of the 3-game series in Atlanta yesterday due to remnants of the tropical depression moving through the area… While the technically has been postponed to October 4th after the Braves finish their regular season, it is doubtful that the game will be played unless it has a bearing on the playoffs… The Braves start a western road trip tonight with the first stop being in San Francisco before moving on the Arizona and San Diego.
  • Drive 4 – Ironbirds 3 (12)… Good news for Greenville Drive fans as last night up in Aberdeen, Maryland the Drive took a 4-3 win over the Ironbirds but it took them 12 innings to do so… The game was tied 2-2 at the end of nine innings and both teams scored a single run in the 10th inning to make it 3-3… A line drive single by Jaxx Groshans in the top of the 12th inning drove in what would prove to be the winning run
