Sports Report for Wednesday, 11-23-2022

Local Notes:

Clinton HS

  • Girls Basketball: Clinton 54 – Palmetto 49… The Lady Red Devils won their second game in as many nights last night as they defeated the Palmetto Mustangs 54-49 in the Championship Game of the Lady Devil Invitational…. Clinton had an early 8-2 lead at the end of the first quarter but trailed 25-19 at the half… The Red Devils came out in the second half and used a press to force the Mustangs into even more turnovers than the two teams had in the first half which helped create some offensive opportunities and by the time the third quarter ended the score was tied 34-34… Clinton then continued to press in 4th quarter and palmetto continued to miss opportunities down the stretch as the Red Devils took the 54-49 win… The Red Devils had 3 players score in double-digits as Mylayja Thompson led them with a game-high 18 points, Anna Litzenberger had 11 and Bryanna Belton finished with 10… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Hanna Gary 9, Ry’Daijia Mars 4, and Taneal Evans 2.

Laurens HS

  • Girls Basketball: BHP 48 – Laurens 43… The Lady Raider basketball team finished its participation in the Coach Varner Tipoff Classic at the Woodruff Activity Center last night falling to the BHP Bears 48-43…  The Raiders trailed 21-15 and did try to come back in the second half but foul trouble and injuries forced the Rader to play 4 on 5 at the end of the game as one Raider left the game with an injury and 3 fouled out… The Bears Kamiyah Christian had a game-high 22 points… The Raiders were led by Faith Jackson who had 18 points…   Akacia Smith and Zoe Young finished 5 points each while Destiny Anderson and Shakira Chinn had 3 each… Shanayi Chinn and MyAngel Walker both finished with 3 points and Dayzhia Grant 1.
  • Boys Basketball: Mauldin 81 – Laurens 34… The Raider boys’ basketball team was back in action yesterday afternoon as they continued their participation in the 2022 Impact Sports Invitational @ Spartanburg Christian Academy… The Raiders hung with the Mavericks in the first quarter as they only trailed by 1 at its end (12-11) but the rest of game the Raiders scored less than 10 points in each quarter while the Mavericks offense continued to click as the Mavericks went on to an 81-34 win… The Mavericks Braden Hershburger led all scorers with 19 points… The Raiders were led by Tylon Fowler who was the only Raider in double-digits with 12 points… Devon Redd finished with 8 points, Ty Johnson 5 while both mason Aiken and Jamarius Hunter both finished with 2 points.
  • Up Next for the Boys…The Raiders will be back in action today in the tournament taking on Spartanburg Christian today at noon… If you would like to follow the Raiders the address for the school’s gym is 8740 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29316… Good Luck to the Raiders!
  • Raider Boys Basketball Hosting Tip Off Fundraiser Dinner… The Raider Boys Basketball team will host a fundraising dinner on November 27th at 4:00 pm… This event will be held at The Ballroom which is located at 241 S. Harper Street Ext. in Laurens… The cost per person is $50 or for a table of 8 is $350… The guest speaker will be Devon Smith, author of the book “How a Roundball Shaped My Life”, and a catered meal will be included… All proceeds from this event will help offset the costs of uniforms, equipment, and travel for the boys’ basketball team… The deadline to order tickets is Wednesday, 11-23-22 Contact Coach Armond Flood at apflood@laurens55.org for more information… Click here to purchase your tickets for this event.

Laurens Academy… Last night the Laurens Academy Crusader basketball teams hosted the Hawks of Oakbrook Prep

  • Girls: Hawks 41 – Crusaders 17… In girls’ action, the Crusaders just could not seem to get their offense in sync as they trailed 26-9 and then went on to fall to the Hawks by a score of 41-17… The hawks Abbi Summy had a game-high 17 points… Olivia Huck led the Crusaders in scoring with 7 points… Others scoring for the Crusaders included Rylee Ballard with 4 points, Madisyn Graham 3, Hannah Ervin 2 and Gracie Hall 1.
  • Boys: Eagles 68 – Crusaders 56… In boys’ action, the news is no better as the Hawks took a 68-56 win over the Crusaders… The score was 35-25 Crusaders at the end of the first half, but the Crusaders offense went colder in the second half while the Hawks offense got in rhythm as they outscored the Crusaders 43-23 in the second half to take the win… The Hawks Lee Dahlberg led all scorers with 26 points… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Buddy Baker who finished with 17 points while Jared Willard had 12 and Brayden Burke 10 to give the Crusaders 3 players scoring in double-digits… Andrew Codington finished with 5 points while Hector Rubio, Clarence Bertoli and Daniel Ervin all finished with 4 points.
  • Middle School Games… I did not receive a report on how the girls’ middle school game went but I can tell you that the Crusaders lost 53-15 in boys’ action… Elias Littleton had 9 points for the Crusader while Caleb Hardy had 5 and Weston Jones 1.
  • Up Next… The Crusader varsity teams will be back in action next Wednesday night (11-30-22) when they travel to St Joseph’s to take on the Knights.

 Football

  • College Playoff Rankings… The College Playoff Rankins were updated Tuesday (11-22-22)… The top 4 are the same as they were when the initial rankings came out and are all undefeated…they are in order from 1-4 are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee dropped from #5 to #10 after its loss to South Carolina and LSU has moved up a spot to #5…  Southern California now is in spot #6… Clemson moved up a spot from #9 to #8… To see the entirety of this ranking click here.
  • FBS AP Top 25… In the latest AP Poll for DI College Football had one change in the top 5 compared to last week… The top 4 are still Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee last week’s #5 dropped to #9 after losing to the Gamecocks Saturday night and Southern California has moved up to #5… Clemson did move up from #9 to #7 thanks to the Gamecocks… To see the entire poll click here.
  • FCS Coaches Poll… Now for the real college football junkies out there, the latest FCS Coaches Poll still has South Dakota State still is at #1 and Sacramento State is still #2…To see the entire poll click here… Furman is still ranked #13.

Men’s Basketball

  • AP Top 25… The latest AP DI College Men’s Basketball poll (11-21-22) did have some shakeup in the top…  North Carolina is still #1but Houston moved up to #2 while Gonzaga dropped to #6… Kansas checks in at #3, Texas #4 and Virginia #5… The top 5 are all undefeated… If you want to see the latest AP Top 25 Men’s DI Poll click here.

This & That:

 Laurens County Touchdown Club… Once again this football season the Laurens County TD Club will be meeting every other Thursday at noon at The Ridge located at 319 Exchange Drive in Laurens… The coast of the annual membership is only $150 which gets you one ticket to all 7 of the regular meetings and one ticket to the Annual awards banquet… To see the flyer that the TD Club has put out that contains more information about the meetings, click here…To join or if you have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 833-2716 or at mowings@laurenscounty.org… Partial videos of the TD Club meeting featuring any awards handed out and what the local coaches had to say at the meeting (as well as guest speakers ) will be available a few days to a week after the meetings… To see those videos click here… All the meetings except the 11-17-22 video are available at the previous link… The next meeting will be their Annual Awards Banquet on 12-7-22 at The Ridge where South Carolina State Football Coach Buddy Pugh will be the guest speaker.


Laurens YMCA Reindeer Run December 10th… The Laurens Family YMCA will be holding its 23rd Annual Reindeer Run on December 10th… The proceeds from the go toward supporting the Youth Scholarship Program… The 5K run will start at 9:00 AM and the Fun Run will start at 9:05… There are prizes for the top 2 runners in both the Male and Female Divisions… Registration is now $35… To register for the event or for more information call the Laurens Family YMCA at 864-984-2626 or stop by the Y at 410 Anderson Drive in Laurens.
