Local Notes

Varsity Football Results Involving County Schools on Friday, 9-29-23

  • Greenville Hurricanes 56 – Thornwell 6 … The Thornwell Saints traveled up to Travelers Rest to take on the Greenville Hurricanes last Friday night… The news is not what I like to report as the Hurricanes took a 56-6 win over the Saints… The Hurricanes led 23-0 at the end of the first quarter of play and 36-6 at the half before going on to the win…The Saints only score came on an 80 yd. pass play from Parker Workman to Kaevon Washington in the second quarter… Washington was the player of the game for the Saints as he had 9 receptions for 145 yds. and the TD… On defense he had 12 tackles one of which was for a loss and he also broke up 2 passes… To see some more Thornwell stats on the game, click here… The Saints will have this Friday night off.

  • Faith Christian 22 – Laurens Academy 6… The Crusader hosted the Faith Christian Knights out of Summerville Friday night at Todd Kirk Field… The Crusaders led 6-0 at the half as they scored on pass play from Ethan Collins to Garrett Murphy in the first quarter… The Knights then scored 14 points in the third quarter and 8 in the fourth to pull away from the Crusaders and take the win… The Crusaders were playing shorthanded after the first quarter as Garrett Murphy and Buddy Bake, both key players for the Crusaders on both sides of the ball left the game with injuries… To see some more Crusader stats on the game click here…. The Crusades will also have the night off this Friday.

  • Clinton 51 Union County 28… The Red Devils start region play with a 51-28 win over the Union County Yellow Jackets last Friday night at Wilder Stadium… It didn’t take long for the Red Devils to assert themselves as on the first play from scrimmage Kadon Crawford tackled Union’s Quan Jeter in the endzone for a safety to put Clinton up 2-0… Javen Cook then returned the Union free kick 36 yds. to the Union 19 yd. line… Tyshuwan Richards then hit Tray Cook for a 19 yd. TD pass and with Lukas Kuykendall’s PAT the Red Devils were up 9-0 with only 51 seconds off the clock… The Red Devils went on to lead 23-0 at the end of the first quarter and 30-7 at the half… Their lead was 44-14 at the end of the third quarter… The Red Devils dominated the statistics in all the key areas as they had 244 yds. rushing to Union’s 84 and 454 total yds. of offense to Union’s 353… The one key stat Union “won” was the yds. passing as they had 269 to Clinton’s 210… Richardson had all the passing yards and threw 7 passes to Kadon Crawford for 191 yds. and 1 TD in addition to his TD to Cook… The Red Devil rushing attack was spread among 6 players with Javen Cook scoring 2 TDs while DJ Clark, Tyshuwan Richardson and Kendarious Copeland each getting a TD… To see the games stat package including a play-by-play accounting of the game click here… Clinton will make the short trip up to Woodruff this Friday night

  • Greer 49 – Laurens 7… The Laurens Raiders hosted a set of Yellow Jackets for the third week in a row as Greer came to KC Hanna Stadium last Friday night for Homecoming…  The Yellow Jackets spoiled Homecoming by taking a 49-7 win over the Raiders… Greer only led 7-o at the end of the first quarter but blew the game open in the second quarter scoring 28 points… It looked like Greer was going to lead 35-0 at the half but the Raiders mounted a drive and scored with no time on the clock in the first half when they attempted a fake field goal with Josh Goodwin carrying it in for the score from the 2 yd. line and Brock Franklin added the PAT to make it 35-7 Greer at the half… Greer had 411 total yds. of offense to the Raiders 144… To see the stats on the game click here and to see a play-by-play accounting of the game click here… The Raider will travel to Riverside this Friday night.

Atlanta Braves… The Braves finished out their regular season schedule hosting the Washington Nationals this weekend in a three-game series in Atlanta.

  • Friday: Nationals 10 – Braves 6… The Braves started the series on a down note as the Nationals took a 10-6 win… The Nationals outhit the Braves 10-6 and 5 of their hits were homers while the Braves had none… One other note about the game, Ronald Acuna Jr. stole 2 more bases in the game to give him 72 on the season to tie the modern day Braves franchise record set by Otis Nixon back in 1991… By the way Nixon had no homers I believe that season, can we say MVP!
  • Saturday: Braves 5 – Nationals 3… The Braves rebounded on Saturday and took a 5-3 win over the Nationals… They outhit the Nationals 11-10 and the Nationals did have 2 errors… Marcell Ozuna has a 3-run homer in the 5th inning to give him 38 on the season… Ronald Acuna Jr. decoded t go ahead and break Otis Nixon’s single season modern day rea record of stolen bases in a season as he stole his 73rd… Spencer Strider (20-5) got the start and the win which was his 20th win of the season… He also struck out 7 in just 5 innings of work which gives him 281 strikeouts in 186⅔ innings  which topped John Smoltz’s 276 in  253⅔ innings back in 196 when Smoltz won the National League Cy Young Award.
  • Sunday: Nationals 10 – Braves 9… The Braves finished their regular season Sunday afternoon with a 10-9loss to the Nationals down in Atlanta… The game went back and forth and the Braves actually le 8-7 at the end of 8 innings but the Nationals got 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning and the Braves could only get 1 in the bottom of the inning to make the final 10-9… Marcell Ozuna finished on a positive note as he had 2 homers in the game to give him 40 this season.

  • Ryan Blaney Wins at Talladega SuperspeedwayRyan Blaney finished about a foot ahead of Kevin Harvick at Talladega Sunday to win the Cup Series race… Just before they crossed the finish line there was a massive wreck behind them that scrambled a lot of cars… Now this was a double-heartbreaking loss for Harvick who has announced his retirement after this race… The reason I say double-heartbreaking is that after the race something about the windshield of his car was found to be out of specs by NASCAR rules, so his second-place finish became a last place finish…Click here for more information on the race.
  • Playoff StandingsWilliam Byron continues to lead in the Chase for the Cup but Ryan Blaney has moved up to second replacing Denny Hamlin who was second place last… To see the complete standings for the playoffs, click here.
