Laurens HS
- Baseball: Laurens 1 – Riverside 0… Last night the Raider varsity baseball team hosted the Riverside Warriors… If you like a game with outstanding pitching and a low scoring affair, that was the game for you as the Raiders took a 1-0 win with the Raiders getting the only hit in the game… The Raiders only run came in the bottom of the 1st inning when with 2 outs, Bennett Edwards drew a walk… He then stole second and advanced to third on an error by the Warrior pitcher… Owen Pridgen then drew a walk which put runners on the corners with 2 outs… Then with a 2-2 count on Ben Willis, Pridgen stole second and on the attempt to get him, Edwards scored the game’s only run… The Raiders threatened in the 2nd and 3rd innings but just could not get the runs in from third base… The Warriors had a runner at third in the 5th inning, but Asher Goss and the Raider defense made sure he went no further… Goss pitched a no hitter striking out 11 and walking 5… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored…. The Raiders are now 14-4 overall and 6-2 in region play… They are scheduled to travel back to Riverside Friday night for the third game of the three-game series with the Warriors with first pitch scheduled for 6:30 pm.
- Tennis: Laurens 5 – Eastside 1… Back on Monday this week, the Raider boys’ tennis team hosted the Eastside Eagles and all I can tell you is the final score… The final score was Laurens 5 – Eastside 1… Coach Todd did not give the names of the Raiders who took wins on the court but she did mention that the Raiders have now qualified for a spot in the Region 2 playoffs later this month.
- Cheerleading Tryouts… Cheerleading tryouts will be held at LDHS starting Monday, May 6th and running through Thursday, May 9th in the Main Gym at LDDHS… There is a lot of information you need to know be coming out on those dates including information about needing a current physical form… For much more information about this, click here
Laurens Academy
- MS Baseball: Crusaders 12 – Cougars 5… The Crusader middle school baseball team traveled down to Greenwood yesterday to take on the Cambridge Academy Cougars… The ride back was a happy one as the Crusaders took a 12-5 win over the Cougars… The Crusaders only outhit the Cougars 12-5 but two Cougar pitchers walked 12 Crusaders, hit a couple of them with pitches and the Cougars as a team had 2 errors all of which helped the Crusaders… For example, the Crusaders scored 6 runs in the 1st inning on 1 hit, 5 walks and one hit batter… Riley Whitaker was the only Crusader to get more than one hit as he went 2 for 2 with an RBI and walked twice… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored…. The Crusaders are now 6-2 on the season and are scheduled to host Richard Winn Friday at 5:00 pm.
Thornwell
- Softball: High Point Academy 20 – Thornwell 7… The Thornwell Saints softball team was also in action yesterday as they hosted the Grizzlies of High Point Academy out of Spartanburg… The Grizzles only outhit the Saints 9-6 but that is not what counts as High Point took a 20-7 win over the Saints… Both teams had errors (HP 3 and Thornwell 5) but 3 Thornwell pitchers issued 9 walks and hit 4 batters which more often than not hurt the Saints… Only 16 of the Grizzlies runs were earned while only 3 of the Saints runs were earned… Karleigh Porter and Madi Landrith each had 2 of the Saints 6 hits with one of Landrith’s being a triple and she drove in 2 runs… Click here to see the box score of the game and click here to see the scorebook to see how the runs were scored… Weather permitting, the team is scheduled to host Dixie today at 5:30.

- D-1 Rankings… The latest college baseball rankings according to D1BASEBALL.COM TOP 25 came out 4-7-24… The top 5 are (previous spot in parenthesis): Arkansas (1), Clemson (2), Texas A&M (3), Tennessee (4) and Oregon State (5)… Coastal Carolina remains at # 20 and South Carolina dropped out of the top 25… If you wish to see the entire top 25 according to the poll click here.

- D-1 Rankings… The latest college softball rankings put out by ESPN and USA Softball came out 4-8-24… The top 5 are (previous spot in parenthesis): Texas (5), Oklahoma (1), Duke (2), Tennessee (4) and Oklahoma State (6)… The Clemson Tigers dropped a spot from #17 to #19 while South Carolina is tied at #25 with Arizona… If you wish to see the entire top 25 according to the poll click here

The Masters… I have to admit I am not a big fan of golf but the one tournament I pay attention to is The Masters… Not only is some great gold played there but it is done on one of the most beautiful courses on the tour… The Masters starts Thursday, 4-11 and if you click here it will carry you to the masters’ website where almost anything you want to know about this iconic tournament can be found… Schedules, tee times, weather alerts and leader board are just a few of the thing you can find there… If you want to go directly to the leader board click here… Enjoy!
- Mother Nature 1 – Braves/Mets 0… Bad weather in Atlanta last night caused the Braves game with the Mets to be postponed until in September… The two teams are scheduled to close out the 4-game series today at 12:20 pm… Believe it or not, the Braves schedule says this is supposed to be “Weather Education Day”…. If the weather forecast is correct that I saw last night, it might be in more ways than one.

- Bowling Green 5 – Drive 1… The Greenville Drive lost their fourth game-in-a-row last night as the Bowing Green Hot Rods took a 5-1 win at Flour Field… Greenville led 1-0 going into the top of the 3rd inning were the Hot Rods broke the game open scoring 4 runs…

NASCAR
- William Byron Wins for Third Time this Season… William Byron became the first 3-time winner on the Cup Series this season as he took the win at Martinsville Sunday… His Rick Hendricks Motorsports teammates Kyle Larson and Chase Elliot finished second and third respectively… Click here to go to the NASCAR website where there is much more about this including the final race results.

Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame… Recently the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame announced the five members of its fifth class which will be inducted on Thur., April 25th at Laurens County Museum on courthouse square at 6:30 pm… The five new members are Robert Wilder, Anthony Downs, Charles Peterson, Walter Todd and Jean Hammond Whitfield… Now to read more about each of the inductees and to learn how they were chosen click here… You will also find out who the members of the first four classes were as well as general information about the Laurens County Sports Hall of Fame… Tickets are now on sale for $30 and include a catered meal… To purchase your ticket, click here… No tickets will be sold at the door.
