Sports Report for Monday, 8-29-2016

Local Notes:

CHS & LDHS

  • Clinton 34 – Laurens 29… At the Laurens County TD Club meeting last Friday Coach Andrew Webb stated that he knew his Red Devil football team really could not match up size wise with the Laurens Raiders that night but he was counting on their speed, determination and scrappiness to win the Laurens County Championship that night and in the end that is just what happened as they took a 34-29 win over the Raiders…Laurens led 14-13 at the half but missed putting points on the board by missing a field goal and the Red Devils caused a Raider fumble which was returned 49 yards by Sincere Hunt for a TD… Clinton drove down the field to open the second half and scored on a 2 yard run by Koko Richey to put the Red Devils up 19-14 and they never trailed again… Clinton then blocked a Laurens punt deep in Laurens territory and scored 3 plays later on a 4 yard run by Kris Holmes… With the PAT the Red Devils led 26-14… Clinton scored again early in the 4th quarter after they recovered another Laurens fumble and a few plays later Richey scored again and added the 2-point Pat to make the score 34-14 Red Devils… Laurens then started a comeback with DQ Floyd scoring from 20 yards out and Devin Hubner added the PAT to make it 34-21… The Raider defense than put points on the board as they scored a safety on the Red Devil punt attempt making it 34-23… After the free kick, Laurens scored 6 plays later when Nathan Rudder hit Jordan Pearson in the end zone on a 19 yard scoring pass… The PAT failed and the score stood 34-29… Unlike Laurens who committed 5 fumbles on the night and lost 3 of them, Clinton had not put the ball on the ground until their next possession when they fumbled and Laurens recovered it at the Clinton 11 yard line… This is where the Clinton defense showed up big time as they held the Raiders on a 4th and 4 from the 5 yard line causing the Raiders to turn the ball over on downs at the Clinton 3 with 33 seconds left in the contest… The Red Devils were then able to run out the clock breaking their 4 game losing streak to the Raiders. … For statistics on the game, click on the following: Laurens at Clinton  Stats

  • Laurens JV 26 – Clinton 20… The first half of the County Championship series in football this week occurred last night at Laurens Middle School and the Raider JV team took a 26-20 win over the Clinton JV team… The raiders threatened on their first drive of the game as they drove all the way down to the Clinton 3 yard line and the Red Devil defense held the Raiders on 4th down at the 3… The Red Devils were unable to drive out of the hole and punted the ball with the Raiders taking over at their own 45 yard line… 11 plays later, the Raiders got on the scoreboard with 1:42 left in the first quarter on a 15 yard pass from Ryan Campbell to Will Tinsley… The 2-point conversion failed… Late in the second quarter, the Raiders forced the Red Devils to punt from the shadow of their own goal line and the punt was a poor one as the Raiders took over on the Clinton 15 yard line.. A couple of play later Deonja Brown scored from a couple of yards out to put the Raiders up 12-0 as the point conversion failed…Taking the ball over on the kickoff with 1:32 left in the half, Clinton drove down and as time expired in the half Konnor Richardson threw up a long pass as time expired which was caught by P.J. Bluford as time expired for the score… Parker Duncan added the Pat to make the score 12-7 at the half… Clinton actually took a 13-12 lead as they took the kickoff to open the second half and drove down and scored on a long Richardson to Dillon Odell pass that went for the score… The PAT was blocked so the score stood 13- 12 Clinton with 8:29 left in the third quarter… The lead did not last long because the Raiders scored at the end of their next possession on a long 51 yard pass from Campbell to Kee Pitts to make the score… The 2-point conversion failed making the score 18-13 Laurens… Two possessions later, Campbell, again hit Pitts with a long pass to put the Raiders 26-13…Late in the game, Clinton’s Marco Cunningham intercepted a Raider pass and returned it to the Raider 18… Six plays later Konnor Richardson carried it in from 3 yards out for the score and with the PAT the score stood 26-20… Laurens covered the on-side kick and then ran the clock out for the win.

Sports Report for Thursday, 8-11-2016

Local Notes:

  • Red Devil Scrimmages… Thanks to Coach Andrew Webb I now have the score from the BHP at CHS scrimmage on Tuesday night… The always tough and this year in SCHSL Class 4 BHP Bears took a hard fought 27-23 win over the Red Devils… Coach Webb stated that the Red Devils got off to a slow start but stayed together and overcame some adversity and had a chance to win but came up a little short…. He also stated he was proud of the leadership on the team and the fight the team showed… The Red Devils were at Berea last night and mainly due to the fact the team is involved in so many scrimmages this week, most of the time the younger (non-starting) players saw most of the playing time… Coach Webb stated they played different scenarios in the game and he really didn’t care about the score… He was very pleased with the play of his younger players as he was more interested in getting them reps and film on them… I am sure that helped their morale and will pay dividends before the season is over.
  • Clinton and Laurens at Woodruff Tonight.…. The Arthur State Bank Wolverine Showcase will take place tonight at Varner Stadium on the campus of Woodruff HS and both the Clinton Red Devils and the Laurens Raiders will be there… The Red Devils will take on Blue Ridge at 6:30 in the opening half of football… Chapman and Spartanburg will tangle in a half of football next and finally the Raiders and the Woodruff Wolverines will close out the action in a half of football that will start at about 8:30… Clinton will be on the home side of the field while the Laurens will be on the visiting side of the field… Cost of admission will be $6… Good luck to the Red Devils and the Raiders.

The reason I bring this up is tonight at 7 pm WYFF Chanel 4 in Greenville will have a live look-back at the Atlanta Olympics… This is a lead-up to NBC’s coverage of the Olympics on WYFF… Should be interesting and I plan on watching it.
