Well the Laurens Academy Crusaders were finally able to get their home opener in yesterday after two wet filed postponements as they hosted Shannon Forest… Before the game even started there was one thing I could tell you for sure and that is that the Crusaders were going to win… The reason for that statement is simple because the Crusader is also the mascot for Shannon Forest. … Well unfortunately the “wrong” Crusaders got the win as Shannon Forest took an 8-0 win… The game only went 5 innings and SF scored in every inning but the first…Both teams had 6 hits but SF took advantage of 4 LA errors and a wild pitch or two figured into their scoring… LA got runners as far as third on two occasions but just could not get the clutch hit… Dawson Foster led LA at the plate going 2 for 2… To see the box score on this game, click on the following: 3-13-19-LA-BB-Shannon-Forest.

  • Clinton 15 – Whitmire 0… In their first game on Saturday morning, the Red Devils started their season off with a bang as they defeated Whitmire 15-0… The Red Devils scored in each of the 4 inning they batted with the big inning being the 3rd when they put 6 runs on the board… The Red Devils pounded out 17 hits with Maddison Burton and Maddi Wood both going 3 for 4… Hunter Benson had a good game at the plate as she had a pair of doubles and drove in 6 runs… Kamryn Akins picked up the complete game win giving up one hit while striking out 5 and walking none… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: 3-2-19-CSb-Newberry-2 3-2-19-CSb-Whitmire-1
  • Clinton 11 – Newberry 11… In their second game Saturday, the Red Devils took on region foe Newberry…. Again there is good news for Red Devil fans as they defeated the Bulldogs 11-0… The game only went 4 innings and again the Red Devils scored in every inning plating 5 of their runs in the 4th inning… The Red Devil bates produced 14 hits with Hunter Benson going 4-4 with 3 doubles driving in 4 runs… Kate Marshal picked up the complete game win giving up 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: 3-2-19-CSb-Newberry-2

  • Girls North-South All-Star Game: North 58 – South 39… In this game the Crusaders were represented by Blair Quarles who scored 7 points and Jenifer Wu who scored 4 points for the victorious north team… A side note on this game, Blair Quarles almost caused her parents to have a heart attack as one of her made shots was from behind the three-point line… Wonder if they had an AED device handy?
  • Boys SCISA –GISA A-2A Game… SCISA 108 – GISA 104… In this defensive struggle (LOL) the South Carolina team took a 108-104 win over the team from Georgia… Noah Moore was the Crusader representative in this game and he scored 6 points.

LDHS:  The Laurens Raider baseball team was finally able to get its season started last night as they traveled to Greenville HS to take on the Red Raiders in a doubleheader of baseball.

  • Greenville 8 – Laurens 2… In the first game, a lack of timely hitting and errors hurt the raids as Greenville took an 8-2 win… The Raiders got on the board first in the top first inning as Jalen Bragg had a solo homer in his first at-bat of the season to put the Raiders up 1-0… However, Greenville responded by plating a run of their own in the bottom of the inning to tie the game… Laurens retook the lead in the third inning when Tanner Smith reached base on an error and later scored the same way… Again Greenville responded in the bottom of the inning to tie the game… In the bottom of the fourth inning the wheels started coming off the bus for the Raiders as Greenville scored 4 times on one hit with walks, wild pitches and errors hurting the Raiders… Greenville added two more runs in the sixth to make the final 8-2… The Raiders had only 4 hits in the game with no Raider having more than 1 hit and Brag’s solo homer was the highlight of the offense… Tanner Smith took the loss in relief of Erick Jones… To see the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: 2-26-19-Gm-1-Greenville…. Sports Report for Monday, 2-25-2019

Local Notes:

Laurens Academy: State Champions Again!

LA: 39 – DA 24… The Lady Crusaders traveled back to the Sumter Civic Center (some now call Laurens Academy South-East) last Saturday to take on the Dorchester Academy Raiders in the championship game of the SCISA Class-A Tournament… The two teams are not strangers to each other as they met in the finals two years ago with the Raiders taking a 52-45 win over the Crusaders for the crown… The Raiders came into the contest Saturday 22-2 and the Crusaders 28-3 with the goal of avenging the loss 2 years ago and win back to back championships… Well that is exactly what the Crusaders did as they defeated the Raiders 39-24… To be honest it was not the prettiest game ever seen as both teams missed shots left and right but the Crusaders made more than the Raiders and that is all that counts… There was a lot of tough rebounding especially by the Crusaders and it was a common site to see players diving on the floor after loose balls…  The Raiders actually outscored the Crusaders 6-5… The Crusaders scored first in the second quarter to go up 7-6 and never trailed after that… By the time the half rolled around, they led 18-11 and then held the Raiders scoreless in the third quarter to take a 28-11 lead going into the final 8 minutes of play… The Crusaders led by as much as 21 points in the fourth quarter before the Raiders tried to come back and get as close as 12 but would get no closer… Ruthie Moore was the only player in double-digits and she finished with 18 points… Regan Williamson finished with 9 points and Blair Quarles 7… Jennifer Wu finished with 4 points and Hannah Stribling 1.

Tournament Awards… After the tournament finished three Crusaders were named to the All-State Tournament Team… They are Regan Williamson, Ruthie Moore and Jennifer Wu…. Congratulations to these three fine young ladies!

Photos and Video Available… Now I do have some photos and video shot at the game last Saturday…. Most of the video is Coach Marlett’s comments after the game… If you would like to see this, click here.
