Fuller, the late Chick Galloway, Cally Gault, Kevin Long and Keith Richardson… Each of these outstanding individuals who were present expressed their surprise in being selected and pointed out that without the help of many other coaches, athletes, players and family they would not be standing there.. To learn more about how these individuals were selected and a very brief bio on them, click here… Congratulations to each of these outstanding individuals and check below for a photo slide show.

College Notes:

  • Gamecocks in Final Four Time Two… well it goes without saying that the biggest sports story this weekend in the State of South Carolina is the fact that both the men’s and women’s team basketball teams have made it to the final four… The ladies will play at 7:30 tonight as they take on Stanford at 7:30 and the game can be seen on ESPN2… About 30 minutes after that game finishes UConn and Mississippi State will play and it can be seen on ESPN2 also… The winners will play at 6:00 pm Sunday in the Championship Game and that can be seen on ESPN… The men will play Gonzaga at 6:10 pm tomorrow night and that game can be seen on CBS (Channel 7 out of Spartanburg)… Shortly after that game is over Oregon and North Carolina will play also on CBS… The championship game will be held Monday and I am not sure about the time (most likely 9:00 pm) but I am sure it will be on CBS… My only comments are predictable to those who know me… Go Gamecocks X 2!!!

CHS:

  • Baseball: Ninety Six 11 – Clinton 10… The Red Devil baseball team traveled down to Ninety Six last night to take on the Wildcats and found themselves trailing 11-0 after just 2 innings of play… I suppose a lot of teams would have just “walked” through the rest of the game to get on the bus and head back home but that is not the Red Devil way as they fell 11-10 and had the tying run on third base with 1 out in the top of the 7th but just could not advance it that last 90 feet…  Aaron Copeland started the Red Devil comeback in the 3rd inning with a 2-run homer… Clinton added 6 more runs in the 4th and single runs in the 5th and 6th innings… The Red Devils outhit the Wildcats 11-9 and four different Red Devils had 2 hits each… To find out who they were click on the following for the box score and stats: 17-3-27-B-CHS-Ninety-Six…. Sports Report for Monday, 3-13-2017

Local Sports Notes:

LDHS:

  • Softball: Laurens 17 – Riverside 1 (3)… Last Friday night the Raider softball team played host to the Riverside Warriors and they were still hurting from the 9-3 loss to Woodruff the night before… Well it did not take them long to start feeling better as they held Riverside scoreless in the top of the first and then sent 22 batters to the plate in the bottom of the inning scoring 17 runs in route to a 17-1 win in a 2½ inning game shortened by the 15 run after 3 rule… To be honest the Warriors had a young team and it showed as they committed 8 errors and managed only 3 hits… CJ Ginn led the Raiders going 3-3 with 2 doubles and 4 RBIs… For the game’s box score and stats click on the following:17-3-10-Riverside-SB … For the game’s scorebook click on the following: 17-3-10-Riverside-SB-scorebook … The Raiders will host the BHP Bears today in a 7:30 contest that can be heard here on Real Radio 860 and on the internet at WLBG.com.
  • Baseball: Riverside 4 – Laurens 3 (10)… About the time the softball team was finishing off Riverside at home the baseball team started its game with Riverside at Riverside… The Raiders had a 3-1 lead after two innings but by the time they went to the bottom of the seventh Riverside had cut the lead to 3-2… They then proceeded to the game 3-3 and it stayed that way until the bottom of the tenth inning… In that inning the first Warrior batter singled, the next walked and the third was intentionally walked…The fourth batter then hit into a fielder’s choice where the runner at third was retired at the plate… Unfortunately for Raider fans the next batter singled to give the Warriors a walk-off 4-3 win…. The Warriors outhit the Riders 9-4 and to see which Raiders had those hit and for other stats and the box score click on the following: 17-3-10-Riversid-B …. For the game’s scorecard click on the following: 17-3-10-Riversid-B-scorebook… The Raiders are scheduled to host the Clinton Red Devils today at 7:00 pm and that game will NOT be broadcast here on Real radio 860 but can be heard on another local area station.

  • Correction… Yesterday I recapped the Raider’s 7-5 win over the Emerald Vikings in baseball action on Wednesday… I mistakenly gave credit to Matthew Holcombe for the win but in fact it was Nat Towles who picked up the win… Sorry about that.

Sports Report for Thursday, 3-9-2017

Local Sports Notes:

LDHS:

  • Baseball: Laurens 7 – Emerald 5… The Laurens Raider baseball team hosted the ‘Emerald Vikings at Ed Prescott Field last night and in varsity action the Raiders took a 7-5 win but a lack of focus on defense almost cost the Raiders the game… The Raiders led 1-0 going into the top of the fourth inning when Raider errors allowed the first two Viking batters to reach base and before the inning was over a couple more errors, 3 hits, a walk and a wild pitch and passed ball allowed the Viking to put 5 runs on the board to take the lead… The Raiders came back in the bottom of the inning and got 3 of the runs back and then went ahead in the fifth when Ty Foster had a 2-out single to drive in two runs putting the Raiders up 6-5… The added an insurance run in the sixth to take the win… The Raiders scored their 7 runs on just 6 hits with 6 different Raiders getting the hits… Nate Towels started the game and pitched 5⅓ innings giving up the 5 unearned runs on 5 hits while he struck out 10 and walked 5 to pick up the win… Towles was lifted because of the new pitch limit rule and Matthew Holcombe finished the game getting a save… For the game’s box score and stats click on the following: 17-3-8-Emerald … For the game’s scorecard click on the following: 17-3-8-Emerald-scorebook … The Raiders are now 5-1 on the season and will be back in action Friday when they travel to Riverside.

  • Boys Soccer: Dixie 1 – Laurens 0… Back on Tuesday the Raider boys’ soccer team hosted the Green Hornets of Dixie and the Hornets took a hard fought 1-0 win over the Raiders… The Hornets played very defensive throughout the game due to their early goal in the 9th minute when Hornet forward dribbled past the Raider defense and slotted the ball far post just past goalkeeper Jairo Cruz… Despite the many, many shots that LDHS boys took, none were put in the back of the net… Raider goalkeeper Cruz made many spectacular saves to keep the Hornets with only one goal… The game ended in a 1-0 win for Dixie over Laurens. The Raiders play their next game at Wade Hampton High School on Thursday March 9 at 7pm.
