  • G: Laurens 49 – Clinton 44… The first game of the evening was just as hard fought as the boys and the final score was even closer as the riders took a 49-44 win… Also like the boys contest, the number of fouls called showed that both teams wanted the win as least 55 fouls were called… The Raiders jumped out to a 16-10 lead at the end of the first quarter but the Red Devils fought back and carried a 24-22 lead into locker room at the half… The Raiders came out in the third quarter and picked up their offense and defense outscoring the Red Devils 14-6 to lead 36-30 going into the final 8 minutes of the game and held on as Clinton tied to come back to take the 49-44 win… Raniya Jackson had a game-high 24 points to lead the Raider and Qua Fortson had 20… Lamoria Allen finished with 4 points and Navia Blanding 1… Clinton only had one player score in double-digits and that was De’Shanti Watts who finished with 16 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Grayson Taylor with 8 points, Payton Price-Walker 6, Taneal Evans & Dana Kinard 4 each, Alexis McGowan 3, Tinique Austin 2 and Serenity Baker 1… The Raiders are now 1-1 on the season while the Red Devils are 4-1… The Red Devils will host Saluda tomorrow while the Raiders travel to Hillcrest.

  • G: Crusaders 40 – Hawks 36… The Lady Crusaders were also involved in a close game last Friday night as they defeated the Hawks 40-36 holding on for the win at the end… The Crusaders 35-23 heading into the final 8 minutes of play where the Hawks outscored them 13-6 as the Crusaders were only able to hit 5 out of 10 free throws in the that stretch… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Regan Williamson and Blair Quarles who both finished with 10 points…  Olivia Huck and Payton Breen added 9 points each while Rylee Ballard and Emily Suttles added a single point each…. The Crusaders are now 5-2 on the season.
  • B: Crusaders 67 – Hawks 51… In the nightcap, the Crusaders also took the win by a more comfortable 67-51 score… The Crusaders took a 19-12 lead into the second quarter and then continued to outscore the Hawks in each of the remaining quarters except the last where the Hawks outscored them 12-11… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Caio Rita who had game-high 23 points… Thomas Lowry was also in double digits with 16 points and Diamonte Grant scored 15… Clarence Bertoli finished with 9 points while both Cal Robertson and Luke Kerber chipped in 2 points each…. Thursday, 12-5-19:  The Crusaders traveled up to Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greer to take on the Grenville Hurricanes.

  • G: Crusaders 30 – Hurricanes 28… The Crusader girls were involved in a tight game that they only led 23-22 going into the final quarter and the Hurricanes came back to tie the game 28-28 close to the end… The Crusaders worked the ball around the top of the key and with 2 seconds left to play Reagan Williamson canned a jumper to lift the Crusaders to a 30-28 win… She finished with a game-high 14 points leading the Crusaders in scoring and the only other Crusader in double-digits was Payton Breen with 10…  Blair Quarles finished with 4 points and Olivia Huck 2.

LDHS Raiders:

  • Freshman Boys: Hillcrest 49 – Laurens 41… Doing a little catching up on a score that came to me late on Tuesday, the Raider freshman basketball team traveled to Hillcrest Monday night in their first contest of the season… The news is not what I like to report to Raider fans as the Rams took a come from behind 49-41 win over the Raiders… The raiders led most of the game and actually led 39-30 at the start of the last quarter but the offense went cold as Hillcrest heated up outscoring the Raiders 19-2 in the final 8 minutes… Leading the raiders in scoring were Ty’Qua Johnson with 17 points and K.D. Mosley with 12 points… For more on this game click here.

Clinton Red Devils: Last night the Red Devils hosted the Ninety Six Wildcats in basketball action.

  • G: Red Devils 31 – Wildcats 15… The Lady Red Devils ran their record to 4-0 on the season as they took a 31-15 win over the Wildcats… At the half the score looked like something you would expect at a football game as the Red Devils led 16-8… The Red Devil defense was outstanding in the third quarter as they held the Wildcats scoreless while the offense scored 13 points as they pulled away for the win… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Taneal Evans who had a game-high 7 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Tinique Austin 6 points, Dana Kinard 5, De’Shanti Watts 5, Grayson Taylor 2, Seri9nity Baker 2, and Terriauna Bennett 2.

Local Notes:

LDHS Raiders: Last night the Laurens Raiders had their home opener as they hosted the Rams of Hillcrest in varsity basketball action

  • G: Rams 74 – Raiders 32… The Lady Raiders took to the court for the first time this season as the usual preseason tournament at BHP they traditionally play in was canceled… Unfortunately for the Raiders you could tell it was their first game ads they lost 74-32 to the Rams… It was a game that saw the Raider offense struggle under pressure from the Ram defense and the Raiders at times in the first half had more turnovers than they did points… By the time the half rolled around the score was 42-12 Rams and they never looked back… Qua Fortson led the Raiders with 9 points… CaDayzhia Grant finished with 6, Raniya Jackson 5, Nadia Anderson, while Ashanti Conway and Macayle Revis had 3, MK Moore 2 and Lamoria Allen 1.
  • B: Rams 75 – Raiders 70… In the boys’ game the Rams took a 75-70 win but the Raiders did not go down without a fight… The Rams carried a 43-31 lead into the locker room at the half and built on that in the third quarter to lead by 19 with about 4 minutes left to play… That is when the Raiders caught fire and led by Dee Foster scoring 3 three-point baskets and both Dra Copeland and Leonard Williams getting hot also the Raiders fought back and only trailed 55-52 going into the final quarter of play… The Raiders continued the comeback in the fourth quarter and di8d take a 1 point lead with about a minute left in the game but Hillcrest made a the key free throws and buckets down the stretch to pull out the win… Dee Foster finished with a game-high 25 points while both Dra Copeland and Leonard Williams finished with 17 points.. JQ fair had 6 points, Preston Mahon 3 and Nigel Owens 2… The Raiders are now 1-3 on the season and the Raiders will host Clinton this Friday night in round 1 of the “County Championship”…. Those games will NOT be broadcast.

Laurens Academy Crusaders: Yesterday the Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled up to Spartanburg Christian Academy to take on the Warriors… Spartanburg Christian is a much larger school than Laurens Academy and their teams are traditionally very strong.

  • G: SCA 55 – LA 31In varsity girl’s action the Warriors jumped out to a 21-2 lead at the end of the first quarter and then went on to take a 55-31 win over the Crusaders… The Warriors led 50-19 going into the fourth quarter where the Crusaders did outscore them 12-5 but it was too little too late…. Blair Quarles led the Crusaders with a game-high 14 points and Reagan Williamson was also in double-digits with 10 points… Olivia Hick finished with 5 points and Payton Breen 2… The Crusaders are now 3-2 on the season.
  • B: SCA 73 – LA 25… I am afraid the news is no better where the Crusader boys are concerned as the Warriors took a 73-25 win over the Crusaders… The Warriors wasted little time getting ahead as their offense scored 21 points in the first quarter while holding the Crusaders to just 4 points… From that point on they never looked back as the Crusaders struggled offensively and were actually held scoreless in the final quarter… Caio Rita and Diamonte Grant led the Crusaders in scoring with 6 points each… Thomas Lowry and Clarence Bertoli finished with 4 points each, Cal Robertson had 3 and Luke Kerber rounded out the Crusader scoring with 2 points… The Crusaders are now 2-2 on the season and will be back in action this Thursday as they travel to Greenville to take on the Hurricanes in the gym at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church in Greer.

  • G: Clinton 40 – BSM 30 in OT… The Lady Red Devil basketball team took a 40-30 win over the Lady Bengals but they had to go to overtime to do it after coming back to tie the game to send it into overtime… Neither team had a stellar offense in the first half as the score was only 10-8 Bengals at the half… The Bengals came out in the third quarter and outscored the Red Devils 10-4 to stretch their lead to 20-12 going into the fourth quarter… In the fourth quarter the Clinton defense stepped up and played even better than in the first three quarters while the Clinton offense finally started to click as they outscored the Bengals 16-8 to tie the game 28-28 and send it into overtime… In the overtime the Red Devil offense continued to click and the defense continued to keep the Bengals in check as they outscored the Bengals 12-2 in the OT to take the 40-30 win thus running the Red Devil record to 3-0… Taneal Evans was the only Red Devil in double-digits leading the Red Devils with 11 points… Dana Kinard finished with 8 points, Peyton Price-Walker &, De’Shanti Watts & Terriauna Bennett both had 5 points and Tinique Austin 2.

  • G: HT 42 – GCO 9… In the first game at GCO, the Lady Panther’s Faith Jackson was just too much for the Tigers as she scored 29 points to lead the Panthers to a 42-9 win over the Lady Tigers… Turnovers and poor rebounding hurt the Tigers all night long… Others scoring for HT were Destiny Anderson with 12 points and Nevaeh Montgomery with 1… For the Tigers Kathreen Bling had 8 points and Maddison Blume had 1
