The Red Devils will be home tomorrow night as they host the Broome Centurions.

  • B: LA 55 – WWK 22… The boys’ varsity game was very similar to the girls contest in that neither team scored much in the first quarter but the Crusaders did lead 5-3 at its end… Also like in the girls contest, the Crusaders came out in the second quarter and outscored the Knights big time (24-4) to take a lead that was never really threatened after that as they cruised on to a 55-22 win… The Crusaders had three players scoring in double digits… Nate Martin had a game high 13 points while Ryan Holmes had 11 and Noah Stribling 10… Others scoring for the Crusaders were Noah Moore with 5 points while Josh Urwick, Dawson Foster, Ryan Anderson & Joshua Moore all had 3 points each… Rounding out the Crusader scoring with 2 points each were Jonathan Burns & Jack Kerber… The Crusaders improved their record to 6-7 and the teams will host arch rival Newberry Academy this Friday.

  • Women… The Lady Gamecocks were in action yesterday and they also ran their record to 13-0 with an 85-32 win over Arkansas… The Gamecocks are the only D-I school to have an undefeated men’s and women’s team at this point of the season and as I said before, I don’t think it will be that way much longer as one of them will lose a game sooner or later… Want to place any bets as to which one???? LOCAL NOTES:

Laurens YMCA and Laurens City Parks & Recreation Announce Agreement… Yesterday at Collyar Park Brian Harlan of the Laurens Family YMCA and Jason Pridgen of the City of Laurens Parks and recreation Department announced an agreement concerning youth baseball in the area…. For the last several years the YMCA has headed up the Dixie Youth Baseball program while the City of Laurens has done likewise with the Little  League program… In the past youth had to decide which one of these programs they wanted to participate in… This spring the two organizations will operate a joint program… While many details are yet to be worked out, the agreement calls for the YMCA to continue to operate under the Dixie Youth banner and offer baseball to those ages 3-6 and also the middle school baseball program…. The City Parks and Recreation Department will offer baseball and softball for girls to youth ages 7-12 under the Little League banner… Harlan and Pridgen both stated that this idea has been discussed between the two directors for some time but until now they haven’t felt like it was the right time to proceed… Again there are a lot of details to be worked out but the framework is in place now for what should prove to be a giant step forward for youth baseball this spring.

LDHS: The Laurens Raiders hosted the Byrnes Rebels Friday night and if you missed them all I can say is you missed two of the better basketball game played at LDHS in recent years…

  • B: LDHS 70 – BHS 69… The Byrnes Rebels boys’ team came into Friday night’s contest with an early season ranking of either #1 or #2 depending on whose poll you look at… They had already beaten the Raiders twice this season and each game was a double-digit win… But that was not the case Friday night as the Raiders fought back from a 16 point deficit at one time to take a 70-69 win when Chris Statom canned a pair of free-throws with 0.6 seconds on the clock to lift the Raiders to a 70-69 win over the Rebels… The Raiders trailed 41-28 going into the locker room at halftime and began to claw their way back about 2 minutes into the third quarter and trailed 54-48 entering the final quarter of play… With about 5:30 left in the quarter the Raiders tied the game 58-58… From then on the game went back and forth with Byrnes missing clutch free throws and the Raiders missing a few also but the two they needed for the win were coolly knocked home by Statom…. After the game Statom commented all he was thinking about was relaxing and making the shots to give the team a win… Coach Ben Sinclair talked about the character his team displayed in coming back and taking the win and what a confidence builder it will be heading into the region schedule that starts this week…. Statom led the Raiders with 20 points while Ty Madden had 16 and E’Nicholas Leake 11 too give the Raiders 3 players in double-digits… Toby Jackson had 8 points, Ladarius Williams 6 & Kezario Whitmore 5.

Jadasia Bennett had a game high 18 points with all of them coming from behind the three-point arc… Cofield ended the night with 8 points, Nasia Owens 8, three points each for Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon, Cali Heisey &Malaysia Todd while Tieisha Jones & Briana Carcamos added 2 each.
