Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Tennis: Chapman 5 – Clinton 1… Yesterday I told you that on Monday the Lady red Devil tennis team saw their season come to an end as they lost in the upper state finals to Chapman at Chapman by a score of 5-1… I also told you that as of the tome I published yesterday’s sports report that I did not have any details on that match other than the final score… Details of that match are now available and I can tell you that Mary Catherine Dailey took the lone win for the Red Devils as the #1 singles player defeating her opponent but it took 3 sets to do it… Jerri Hill came close to taking a win but she fell to her opponent in 3 sets…For more information on this match, click here…. • Information Concerning Friday’s Playoff Game at Camden… School District 56 has released some information concerning the Red Devil’s first round playoff game at Camden … By SCHSL rule, the admission will be $8:00 and only SCHSL issued passes will be accepted… They also want Red Devil fans to know that the visitor side is on the east side of Zemp Stadium and that you need to be sure to enter on that side because if you enter on the wrong side you cannot get to the proper side once inside the stadium… The information they released also contains directions to the stadium and where you should park… To see the complete press release that includes all this information and more, click here… Go Big Red!

First admission will be $8.00… Further the only passes that will be accepted at the gate will be those issued by the SCHSL… Century Club, District ID, or any other passes will not be accepted and you must by a ticket to get into the game… However, Century Club reserved parking will be honoredIf you would like to avoid the line at the ticket booth this Friday you can purchase your tickets online… If you would like to do that, click here… There is a small convenience fee added to the price of the ticket but remember you can skip the line at the ticket both if you do this…. College Football Playoff Rankings:

  • The College Football Playoff Committee released its first version of the top 25 teams that would be considered for the 4 spots in the upcoming FBS Playoffs… If the season were to end today the top 4 teams that would be playing are Ohio State, LSU, Alabama and Penn State… The Clemson Tigers are ranked #5 and the Georgia Bulldogs #6 and as it stands now, they are the “first two teams out”… Tiger fans should not worry too much as we still have a few weeks to go before this gets “set in stone”… As a matter of fact after this weekend it will change as undefeated LSU and undefeated Alabama play each other which I would bet will cause the loser to drop… If you would like to see the top 25 as the committee sees it, click here.

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Woodruff 17 – Clinton 7… The Red Devils traveled to Woodruff to take on the Wolverines with the possibility of finishing second in the region looming in front of them if they defeated the Wolverines… The defense played hard as did the offense but it was just not to be as the Wolverines took a 17-7 win taking advantage of a couple of Red Devil turnovers… Woodruff scored first with 3:54 left on the first quarter on a long pass to go up 7-0… They scored again with a few seconds gone in the second quarter on a 39 yard field goal to make it 10-0… Clinton recovered a Woodruff fumble with 8:55 left in the half and then went 40 yards scoring on a 2yard run by Greg sanders with Juan Lawson adding the PAT to make it 10-7 Woodruff with 4:57 left in the half which was the score at the half… Clinton missed a field goal that would have tied the game early in the third quarter and the score remained 10-7 headed into the last quarter of play… Early in the fourth quarter Woodruff had a first and goal at the Clinton 6 yard line but the Red Devil defense kept them out of the end zone as Clinton took over on downs at their own 1 yard line… Clinton then turned it over on downs at the Woodruff 40 yard line when they did not convert on a fourth and two situation… On the third play from scrimmage Woodruff’s Shamare Dendy broke loose and scored on a 55 yard run and the PAT made it 17-7 Woodruff with 1:52 left in the game… On the first play from scrimmage after that, Woodruff intercepted a Clinton pass and then ran out the clock.
  • Stats and More… The Red Devils had 270 yards of total offense to Woodruff’s 276…255 of Clinton’s yards came on the ground while only 177 of Woodruff’s were rushing… Clinton had the ball 30:26 while Woodruff only had the ball 17:54… Kimon Quarles led the Red Devils rushing attack with 91 yards and Greg Sanders was close behind with 82 yards…. To see the complete game statistics including a play-by-play accounting of the game click here… The Red Devils end the regular season with a 4-5 overall record and 2-2 in region play where they finished fourth… They will travel to Camden this Friday night in a first round playoff game taking on the Bulldogs.

 LDHS Raiders:

  • Laurens 63 – Easley 29… The Laurens Raiders traveled to Easley last Friday night with the region championship already in hand and the big question was how would the Raiders play with no pressure on them and how would an improving Easley team play with no chance of making the playoffs?… The first part of that question was answered quickly as the Raiders scored the first three times they had the ball before Easley got on the scoreboard as the Raiders went on to take a 63-29 win over the Green Wave… The Raiders never punted in the game and turned the ball over on down 1 one time and never lost the ball on a turnover… Easley answered the second part of that question as their pesky passing attack scored 2 TDs and helped to set up 2 rushing TDs… The Raiders played just about everybody on the bench and some JV player got into the game as the JV game was canceled on Thursday due to weather… Two JV players recorded TDs and Gemire Darden had a rushing TD and Cayson Elledge had 1 TD catch for 60 yards.
  • Stats and More… The Raiders had 506 total yards of offense to the Green Wave’s 409… 379 yards of the Raiders’ offense came on the ground with Zy Todd getting 201 of them and rushing for 3 TDs… Easley had 374 of their yards through the air… To see the complete game statistics including a play-by-play accounting of the game click here… The Raiders finish the regular season 8-1 and 7-0 in region play finishing first in Region I-AAAAA… They will host the Blythewood Bengals this Friday in first round playoff action.
  • Basketball Tryouts Next Monday at LDHS… Coach Allen and Coach Chavis have announced that JV and Varsity basketball tryouts will be held next Monday (11-4-19) at the main and auxiliary gyms at LDHS… For more information about this including where to meet, time and what you need to have on file ahead of time, click here.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • Crusaders 64 – Newberry 14… What a difference a week and a different opponent makes as this time last week we were talking about the Crusaders coming up on the wrong side of a 60-28 score in their last home game with Wardlaw… Last Friday night they traveled down to Newberry academy tom take on the eagles in their last game of the season and they put 20 points on the board in the first quarter and another 38 in the second quarter to take a 58-14 lead into halftime and then went on to take a 64-14 win with a running clock in the second half… Thomas Lowry finished the night with 6 TD passes… Cal Robertson caught 3 of them, Caio Rita 2 and Clarence Bertoli had 1… Lowry also had 2 rushing TDs and Clarence Bertoli added another… To see more stats on the game, click here… The Crusaders finish the season 4-5 on the season and tied for fourth in the region… Next year has the potential to be better as the Crusaders did not have a senior on the team.

Today’s Varsity Football Schedule:

  • Laurens Academy at Newberry Academy… The Laurens Academy Crusaders (3-5) will travel down to Newberry Academy to take on the Eagles (1-5)… Both teams did have a common opponent earlier this season and that was Jefferson Davis… The Crusaders defeated JDA 70-44 while the Eagles lost to JDA 70-8… This will be the final game of the season for the Crusaders… Hope the Crusader fans will make the short trip down to cheer them on but if you can’t listen to our broadcast of Raider football and we will do our best t keep you updated on the score as some Crusader football parents text the score to us.
  • Clinton at Woodruff… The 4-5 / 2-2 Red Devils close out their regular season tonight at Woodruff taking on the 6-3 / 3-1 Wolverines… If the Red Devils pull what looks like on paper whet would be called an upset and win, they would be definitely make the playoffs and with a little help could finish as high as second in the region in Coach Corey Fountains first year at the helm… If the Wolverines take the win the Red Devils are more than likely in the playoffs but there are a couple of things that could happen that would cause them to finish 5th in the region and not make the playoffs… That scenario is not likely but possible… As always Go Big Red!
  • Laurens at Easley… After defeating TL Hanna 33-23 last Friday night at TL Hanna Stadium to clinch the Region I –AAAAA Championship, the Raiders (7-1 / 6-0) will travel to Ealey tonight to take on the Green Wave (3-6 / 2-4) in the final game of the regular season… Let’s hope the Raiders are not looking ahead to hosting a playoff game next week because Easley is a team that has shown improvement as the season went on.

Sports Report for Monday, 10-28-2019

Local Notes:

CHS Red Devils:

  • Clinton 28 – Emerald 14… The CHS Red Devils boarded the bus last Friday and traveled across Lake Greenwood to take on the Emerald Vikings looking for an important region win… Well they found it as they defeated the Vikings 28-14 and that coupled with Woodruffs 28-24 win over Mid-Carolina assured the Red Devils of a spot in the playoffs beginning next week…. Our kids battled from the first snap to the final whistle. We always talk about 3 things before every game… Play Hard, Play Smart and Have Fun. I feel like our kids played hard tonight throughout the game. We did not tackle particularly well tonight and that hurt us, but give Brewer credit. Brewer ran hard and they pushed us around a little bit… We played well on offense in the first half but we hurt ourselves in the second half by not making plays when they were there and committing some costly penalties. We have a short week next week so we need to bounce back and get ready for a good Northside team.”… The Wildcats are now 5-1 on the season
