  • Raider and Boiling Springs Take the Field at KC Hanna
  • Last night the Raiders had their last scrimmage of the preseason as they took on the Boiling Springs Bulldogs… The Raiders started slow and the Bulldogs took advantage of a Raider fumble to set up and early score… After that the Raiders started getting more physical and the two teams played to pretty much a draw after that… The Raiders were missing a couple of offensive weapons running backs Duane Martin and Jordan Woodruff who have slight injuries but are expected to be ready to play for the season opener with Clinton… The two teams even managed to give their JV teams some playing time last night… Coach Liner agreed with the statement that the team looks better at this point of the preseason than it did last year.

Local Notes: …

Results from the Laurens County Speedway… Looking at the results in the main events last Saturday night where you found out who the true racing fans were as the action did not finish until after 2:00 a.m. due to a blown transformer that knocked out the track lights for over an hour.

  • MMSA Stock 4 Division…. The races in this traveling division took the placed of the 4-Cylinder main event and Travis Mosley won the main event by just over half a second… He did this taking advantage of cautions and working his way to the font…. Logan Richey and J.J. Garrett were the next two drivers to get the checkered flag in that order.
  • 602 Crate… The 602 Crate main event saw Billy Rushton win his 100th race at the LCS… He took the lead at the start of the race and pulled away to over a two second win over Michael Smith who finished second with Colby Cannon taking third.
  • Limited… In the Limited main event, Joel Richeson pulled away from Frank Coates late in the race to take a comfortable win over Coates… Mike Huey finished third.
  • Thunder Bombers… The Thunder Bombers main event had multiple cautions that really did not let the race get into any sustained flow… When it finished, Brandon Satterfield was the first driver to see the checkered flag with Dan Lawson and Dylan Chappell finishing second and third respectively.
  • SECA 604 Crate… In the SECA 604 Crate main event, Michael Akeson took the lead at the start and never surrendered it… Gray Patterson was the next driver across the finish line followed by Brad Rachels.

Sports Report for Monday, 8-19-2019

Local Notes

LDHS: Raiders:

  • Laurens 8 – Spring Valley 8… The Laurens Raiders traveled down to Chapin last Saturday night to participate in their jamboree playing a half of football against the Spring Valley Vikings… Almost from the start of the contest the teams could see lightning off in the distance to the north so little time was wasted in the half…Laurens took early lead when they trapped the Viking quarterback in the end zone for a safety somewhere about the 7 minute mark of the first quarter… Soon after that the Raiders muffed a punt attempt deep in their own territory and the Vikings took over at the raider 5 yard line…. The raider defense rose to the occasion and snuffed the Vikings on a fourth and six inches to go to keep the Vikings out of the end zone and preserve the 2-0 lead… The Raiders later scored on about a 3 yard run by Ryan Campbell but extra point went wide to make it 8-0… Spring Valley later moved down the field on a couple of big pass plays and a 15 yard penalty on the Raiders and scored to make it 8-6 Raiders… They went for the 2-point conversion and were successful to tie the game 8-8… Both teams had trouble moving the ball until the last possession of the game when the Vikings moved down into scoring position and tried a 47 yard field goal as time ran out which was no good as the game ended in an 8-8 tie… Ryan Campbell was selected as offensive player of the game… Afterwards Coach Liner said he was overall pleased with team’s performance against a good Spring Valley team but they still have work to do eliminating mistakes.

Laurens Academy Crusaders:

  • Crusaders Split at Richard Winn… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Richard Winn on Friday night to participate in their jamboree… They played a quarter of football against two different opponents… In the second quarter they took the field against a team made up of players from Cambridge Academy and Palmetto Christian Academy in Greenwood… God news here for Crusader fans as they rolled to a 20-0 win… They took the field again in the last quarter against the host Richard Winn Eagles… The two teams managed only 8 points in the quarter of football but unfortunately for Crusader fans they were scored by Richard win as they took an 8-0 win.

  • Friday: Dodgers 8 – Braves 3… The braves carried a 3-2 lead into the top of the 7th inning where the Dodgers put 4 runs on the board and then added 2 more in the 8th inning to take an 83 win over the Braves… The Dodgers outhit the Braves 11-6 and no Brave had more than 1 hit.
  • Saturday: Braves 4 – Dodgers 3… On Saturday the Braves rebounded to take a 4-3 win over the Dodgers as the Braves bullpen bent but did not break in the late innings of the game… The Dodgers outhit the Braves 9-7 and booth teams had a pair of homers…. The Dodgers homers were solo shots as were the Braves… Josh Donaldson (29) and Adam Duval (6) had the Braves homers in the 6th inning… Donaldson was the only Brave with more than 1 hit as he had the homer and a double.
  • Sunday: Braves 5 – Dodgers 3… In the rubber game of the series yesterday, the Braves took a 5-3 win to win the series 2 game to 1…. Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their 4-game series with the Hickory Crawdads over the weekend at Flour Field….As you may recall the Crawdads took a 5-1 win Thursday night.

  • Friday: Crawdads 1 – Greenville 0… The two teams hooked up in a pitcher’s duel on Friday in a game that had only 8 hits and one run scored…. The bad news for Drive fans that 6 of the hits and the one run belonged to the Crawdads as they took a 1-0 win over the Drive.
  • Saturday: Crawdads 5 – Drive 4… Now Saturday’s game did have a few more hits and a few more runs scored than Friday’s game but the Crawdads still took a one-run victory by a score of 5-4… They scored the winning run in the top of the 9th inning and then held the Drive in the bottom of the inning.
  • Sunday: Drive 3 – Crawdads 2… Yesterday the Drive managed to avoid being swept by the Crawdads as they took a 3-2 win… The Drive led 3-1 going into the 9th inning where the Crawdads added another run but could get no closer as the Drive took the 3-1 win.

Local Notes

Laurens Academy Starts Football Practice…. Back on Monday the Laurens Academy Crusaders started their fall practice getting ready for the upcoming season… I was able to take a few photos while I was there and if you click here it will carry you to YouTube where I have a slideshow of those photos… When you have a dozen or less player on your team and you are playing 8-man football it can be tough to practice like the bigger schools do… Sometimes even the coaches (Todd Kirk) have to get involved in the practice above and beyond coaching… Check out the photos to see what I mean.

Pro Sports    For more information on any of the following games, click on their score.

Braves…The Braves finished their 4-game series with the Marlins down in Miami over the weekend… As you may recall the Marlins took the first game on Thursday by a score of 9-2.

  • Friday: Braves 8 – Marlins 4… On Friday the Braves rebounded from their Thursday loss taking an 8-4 win over the Marlins… One of the main reasons for the Braves win was the three homeruns that were hit by Ozzie Albies and Ronald Acuna Jr… Albies put the Braves up 1-0 in the first inning with a solo homer… Acuna had a 2-run homer in the 5th inning and another 2-run homer in the 9th inning to give him 32 homers on the season…. Acuna had 3 hits in the game and Albies 4 for a total of 7 of the Braves 12 hits.
  • Saturday: Marlins 7 – Braves 6 (10)… On Saturday the Braves scored 3 runs in the top of the 9th inning to take a 6-2 lead only to have the bullpen surrender 4 runs in the bottom of the inning as the marlins tied the game to send it into extra innings… In the 10th inning the Marlins retired the Braves in order and then scored the winning run in the bottom of the inning on a hit, an error and a sacrifice fly to win the game 7-6… Miami outhit the Braves 13-7 and Johan Camargo had a 3 run homer for the Braves in the 9th inning.
  • Sunday: Braves 5 – Marlins 4… The Braves earned a split of the 4-game series on Sunday by taking a 5-4 win over the Marlins despite being outhit by the Marlins 12-5… Two of the reasons for the Braves win were a three-run homer by Ender Inciarte in the 4th inning and a solo homer by Ronald Acuna Jr, in the 5th inning… The Braves have the night of tonight and will return to Sun Trust Park tomorrow to start a 3-game series with the Mets.

The Fireflies scored the winning run in the bottom of the 9th inning to take the walk-off win and an error by the Drive in the inning figured into the winning run by the Fireflies…The Drive will start a 3-game series tonight in Augusta with the GreenJackets.
