Local Notes

CHS & LDHS

  • Laurens 34 – Clinton 14… The Laurens Raiders and the Clinton Red Devils faced for the Laurens County Championship last Friday night and the first half of football kind of reminded you of two fighters feeling each other out in the ring and landing a few punches but not able to connect with anything solid as they both moved the ball only to have miscues stop drives and the half ended in a scoreless tie… That all changed on the first possession of the second half as the Raiders Will Tinsley returned the short kickoff 23 yards to the Clinton 42 and then Ryan Campbell carried it home on the first play from scrimmage… Devon Hubner’s PAT made it 7-0 and the Raiders would never trail again but the Red Devils never gave up… The Raider defense then held Clinton to 3 and punt and Tinsley returned the punt to the Clinton 31 yard line… Four plays later, Shamare Dendy carried it in from 4 yards out to put Laurens up 13-0 as the PAT was blocked…. The two teams traded possessions until the fourth quarter…With 11:55 left in the game the Red Devils got on the board when Greg Sanders bulled it in from 5 yards out… Sam Tilled added the PAT to make it 13-7… On the ensuing kickoff Tinsley again had a good return (42 yards) to set the Raiders up at the Clinton 28 yard line… Three plays later Campbell had his 2nd TD run from 20 yards out and Hubner added the PAT to make it 20-7… The Red Devils responded as they moved down the field on the arm of Konnor Richardson completing multiple passes to Can Nichols and Elijah Campbell… The Red Devils scored with 8:20 left in the contest on a Titus Hood rush of 8 yards and Tiller added the PAT to make it 20-14… Laurens answered on its next possession after Jordan Woodruff returned the kickoff 3o yards to the midfield stripe… Four plays later Dendy scored again from 25 yards out after the Duane Martin had moved 25 yards in three rushed to set up the score…Hubner’s PAT made it 27-14 with 6:20 left in the game… A Red Devil fumble recovered by the Raiders at the Clinton 40 gave the Raiders the ball back… They made the Red Devils pay for that mistake as 9 plays later the Dendy picked up his third TD of the night on a 16 yard run and with the PAT the score stood 34-14… The Red Devils were then able to get off 7 plays before the clock ran out giving Laurens the win… The Red Devils finished the night with 220 yards of total offense 89 of which were on the ground… Kimon Quarles led the Red Devils with 77 yards in 7 carries… Cam Nichols had the most reception yards with 92 yards in 4 catches… The Raiders had a total of 333 yards 292 of which were rushing… Duane Martin picked up a net 133 yards in 21 carries while Will Tinsley had 2 of Laurens 3 receptions for 34 yards… Tinsley also had 30 yards in punt returns and 65 yards in kickoff returns…. For more stats on the game, click on the following: CHS+vs+LDHS+Quickie, CHS+vs+LDHS+Individual and CHS+vs+LDHS+Play+by+Play   …. The Red Devils will be on the road this Friday taking on Broome and the Raiders will host Myrtle Beach.

  • Faith-Ridge 52 – LA 34… If you like a lot of offense in your football game, then Summerville was the place to be last Friday night as the LA Crusaders and the combined team form Faith and Ridge Christion schools put 86 points on the board… The only problem is that F-R had 52 of those points as they took a 52-34 win in the Crusader’s’ season opener… F-R led 34-14 at the half… Sorry no other stats on the game at this time.

Local Notes

Clinton vs. Laurens… There were some athletic contests yesterday where the Red Devils and Raiders got together so let’s check on those

  • VB: Laurens 3 – Clinton 1… The Raider volleyball teams traveled over to Clinton yesterday and in varsity action the Raiders took a 3-1 win… Clinton took the first set 25-16 but the Raiders rebounded to tie the match by taking a 28-26 win in the second set… Laurens then went on to take the next two sets by scores of 25-12 and 25-14 to claim the match win… For more details on this match, click here
  • JV-VB: Laurens 2 – Clinton 1… In JV action prior to the varsity match the Raiders were also victorious as they took a 2-1 win over the Red Devils… Laurens took the first set my a narrow 25-23 margin only to have Clinton come back and take the second set by and equally close score of 27-25… The third and deciding set was also hard fought but the Raiders prevailed by 15-10 margin… Click here for a quick recap of the match.
  • JV Football: Laurens 26 – Clinton 18… The game was back and forth as both tams gave their fans something to cheer for and something to moan over… Clinton QB Davis Wilson had a 52 yard rushing TD and competed two TD passes one to Nyker Sims and the other to Zechariah Johnston… He also had a couple of interceptions including a pick-six that Cade Liner took 37 yards to the house with 2:22 left in the contest which all but iced the game for the Raiders… Danny Kinard had a strong night rushing for the Red Devils and the Red Devils never gave up almost completing a TD pass as the game clock hit 0:00… For the Raider their quarterback Cole Munday also had a good night running the Raider offense… He had a TD pass to Haydon McGowan for the Raiders first score and the two-point conversion after that score was a run by Zy Todd… Munday also had a long rushing TD where he faked off just about everybody (including me) into thinking he had handed the ball off up the middle and then carried it to the outside and down the sideline for the score… It was a great opening game for both teams and lets’ hope that bodes well for tonight’s varsity contest.

Sports Report for Monday, 8-20-2018

Local Notes

Clinton and Laurens Fall in Final Jamboree Action… Last Friday night both Clinton and Laurens travelled up to Williamston to Participate in Palmetto High Schools Chick-Fil-A Kickoff Classic… Unfortunately both teams came up short against their opponents in a half of football each.

  • Wren 28 – Laurens 9… Laurens was the first of the two local teams to take the field as they faced the Wren Golden Hurricanes… Wren cored on their first possession of the contest and then went on to take a 28-9 win over the Raiders… The Wren quarterback and receivers obviously have been working out long and hard over the off-season as they dominated the game… Laurens scored came on 29 yard field goal by Devon Hubner and a 3 yard run by Duane Martin… Coach Liner was not upset with the team afterwards pointing out the Raiders had some good drives but just could not finish them and that the Raider defense just simply could not get Wren off the field quick enough.
  • Palmetto 21 – Clinton 7… In the final half of football the Red Devils took on the home standing Palmetto Mustangs… The news is not good here either as the Mustangs scored on the first play from scrimmage on a pass play and then went on to take a 21-7 win…. Palmetto was up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter but the Red Devil defense kept them out of the end zone the rest of the way… Titus Hood finally got the Red Devils on the board with 19 seconds left to play with a rushing TD and Sam Tiller added the PAT… Afterwards Coach Webb was like Coach Liner in that he was not upset as pointed out the Mustang TD on the first play set the tone early but his team continued to respond and did not give up… Of course the two teams will start their season this Friday as the Raiders travel to Clinton for The County Championship in an 8:00 pm contest.

  • GreenJackets 3 – Drive 0…  The Drive concluded their four-game series down in Augusta, GA with the GreenJackets on a sour note as the GreenJackets took a 3-0 win thus the two teams split the series at two games each… The GreenJackets simply outhit the Drive 9-5 and put all 3 of their runs on the board in the 7th inning… The Drive have the night off before returning to Flour Field tomorrow th start a series with Greensboro.

  • BC 7 – Clinton 0… In a half of football last Friday night at Wilder Stadium, Brookland-Cayce defeated Clinton 7-0… Clinton relied mainly on their ground game and the legs of Darien Bailey to account for most of their yards… Konnor Richardson threw sparingly and did run with the ball some also… Clinton picked up good yardage for the most part but just could not sustain a drive or had a miscue to stop themselves… The defense overall was respectable and the B-C score came on a busted B-C paly where they were able to complete a long pass when the Clinton defense froze on the play and let the receiver get behind them… Afterwards Coach Webb was pleased with the progress they made when compared with Tuesday nights scrimmage with Ninety Six… The Red Devils are scheduled to travel to Palmetto for a jamboree this Friday night.
  • Meet the Devils… The fall version of Meet the Red Devils is scheduled for Tuesday, August 21 at 6:00 pm in the main gym at CHS… All fall CHS and CMS athletes will be recognized… This includes: 7th grade football, 8th grade football, CMS cheerleaders, CMS volleyball, CHS cross country, CHS girls’ tennis, CHS JV & varsity volleyball, CHS JV & varsity cheerleaders, JV football, and the 2018 Clinton High School varsity football team… save the date and make plans to go out and support YOUR Red Devils!

  • Sunday: Braves 8 – Brewers 7… Yesterday the Braves took an 8-7 win over the Brewers despite the Brewers outhitting the Braves 19-9… One of the big differences in the game was that 3 of the Braves 9 hits were homers plus they had a triple and two doubles… The Braves are now tied with the Phillies for first place in the NL East and will remain at home to start a 3-game series with the Marlins tonight.

Football Scrimmages

  • Clinton… Last Friday morning at the CHS practice field the Red Devils faced off against the Midland Valley Mustangs… As you might expect the two teams both had their share of mistakes in the game but as Coach Webb said that is why you play these so you can make them here and not in the first game… He noted that his team needed more consistency and not make the same mistakes twice… Clinton will practice again today and then get another opportunity to take the field against someone else as they host Ninety Six tomorrow at 6:00 pm.
  • Laurens… The Laurens Raiders hosted Byrnes, BHP and Strom Thurmond on Saturday morning in their first live action of the pre-season… The Raiders had trouble getting their new offense in gear against Byrnes who had a very quick defensive line and Byrnes did get one TD on the Raiders… Against BHP and Strom Thurmond the offense fared better but still had problems getting it across the goal line… However the defense played tough and pretty much bent but did not break… afterwards Coach Liner was happy in what he saw on the field and thinks the team is ahead of where they were at the same time last year… Laurens will also be back on the field tomorrow as they travel down to Greenwood to take on Emerald and Seneca starting at 10:00 am.
