College Notes:

College Basketball Season Kicks Off Tomorrow… For most of the college teams around the area the regular season kicks off tomorrow… Let’s take a look at who will be playing where.

  • PC Men…. Coach Dustin Kerns kicks off his inaugural season as the Head Coach of the Blue Hose men’s basketball team tomorrow as the team travels to Knoxville to take on the Volunteers in a 7:00 pm contest… He comes to PC after a seven year stint as an assistant coach at Wofford… last year the Blue Hose were 5-25 on the season.
  • PC Women… The Lady Blue Hose will open their season on the west coast as they travel to San Diego, CA to take on San Diego State in a 3:00 pm contest… The team finished last season with an 13-18 record and Coach Todd Steelman and the team look to improve on that this season in his second year at the helm.
  • Clemson Men… Coach Brad Brownell is entering his eighth season in charge of the Clemson men’s basketball team and he and the team are striving to improve on the team’s 17-16 record last year where they were eliminated in the first round of the NIT at home… They open at home tomorrow night as they host Western Carolina in a 7:00 pm contest at Littlejohn Coliseum.
  • Clemson Women… Coach Audra Smith hopes to improve upon the Lady Tigers 14-16 record last year in her fourth year as the head coach at Clemson… They open play tomorrow morning at 11:00 am as they host Kennesaw State at Littlejohn Coliseum in an 11:00 am contest.
  • SC Men… The South Carolina men’s basketball team is coming off one of the better seasons in the team’s history as they finished the year 26-11 overall and made it all the way to the Final Four where they fell in the semi-finals to Gonzaga 77-73… Coach Martin is surely not one to rest on his or the team’s laurels and he knows that if this year’s team wants to duplicate last season, they have a long road filled with hard works ahead this season… They kick off their season tomorrow night as they travel up I-26 to Spartanburg to take on the Wofford Terriers in a 7:00 pm contest which I believe you can see on ESPN 3…. It will be the first official game in the new Jerry Richardson Indoor Stadium that was donated to the school by the Panthers owner,
  • SC Women… Coach Dawn Staley and the Gamecock Lady Basketball team finished their season last year with a 33-4 record and a national Championship the first in the programs history… The team is ranked #3 in the nation in pre-season polls but Coach Staley will quickly tell you that graduation and the WNBA took a few of her key players from last year’s team… Still she has a good nucleus left from last year’s team and some key additions may help them make it back to the Final Four… They start their quest tomorrow night as they host Alabama State at the Colonial Life Center in a 7:00 pm contest that can be seen on the SEC Network.

The latest College Football Poll was released by the committee that sets up the final 4 for the playoff in the FBS Division of College Football… The top 4 spots remain exactly the same as they did last week… Georgia, Alabama, Notre Dame and Clemson hold down those spots in that order… That means that if the bowl season started tomorrow Georgia would be taking on Clemson and Alabama would be taking on Notre Dame… Well the playoffs do not begin tomorrow and a lot can happen between now and when they do start… Now below the #4 spot there was a good deal of shakeup as Ohio State and Penn state both lost for the second time… To see the entire top 25 rankings, click here.

Pros:

  • NASCAR… Well the NASCAR season is winding down fast as there are only 2 races left on the schedule… This Sunday the race will be out in Phoenix for the Can-Am 500… This is the last of the elimination races as the field of 8 drivers remaining in the “playoffs” will be cut to 4 after the race this Sunday…. Three drivers have already clinch a spot in the finals next week and they are Martin Truex Jr., Kyle Busch and Kevin Harvick… The five drivers who will be trying to win that final spot in the last race next week are Brad Keselowski, Denny Hamlin, Ryan Blaney, Chase Elliott, Chase Elliott and Jimmie Johnson…. CHS:

  • Seneca 18 – Clinton 14… The Clinton Red Devils opened play in the Class-AAA playoffs last Friday and underdog to the Seneca Bobcats but they sure did not play like underdogs except maybe during Seneca’s first and last possessions… After going 3 and out on the first possession of the game the Red Devils punted and on the first play from scrimmage, Seneca’s Jerimiah Mackey broke loose for a 66 yard TD run and with the extra point the Bobcats went up 7-0… Clinton’s next possession was ended on an interception but the defense forced the Bobcats to settle for a field goal making it 10-0 with 4:00 left in the first quarter… The Bobcats would not score again until there were 32 seconds left in the game… The Red Devil defense played arguably there best game after the Bobcats went up 10-0 and the Clinton offense was able to produce 264 yards of total offense (233 rushing) to the Bobcat’s 213 (139 yards rushing) but only managed to put 14 points on the board all in the second quarter on a 57 yard run by Mark Wise and a 15 yard TD pass from Konnor Richardson to Layne Cunningham with less than a minute left in the half… Sam Tiller added both PATs… Clinton’s last TD was set up by a Vilo Boyd interception of a Bobcat pass that he returned 51 yards to the Seneca 19 yard line… Neither team could score after that until Seneca took over on their own 20 yard line after the Red Devils failed to convert on a 4th and 3 situation with 4:28 left in the game… They then went the 80 yards in 10 plays aided by two big penalties on the Red Devils and scored on a 7 yard run… They converted on a two-point conversion to make the final 18-14 after Clinton could not move the ball after the score…. • Northwestern 58 – Laurens 7… Note to Laurens Raider teams in the future: avoid playing Northwestern at District 3 Stadium in Rock Hill if at all possible… As you may recall the Raiders traveled to Rock Hill and District 3 Stadium in November of 2015 to take on the Trojans of Northwestern in the opening round of the Class-4A playoffs and lost by a score of 46-7… Well last night they returned to Rock Hill to take on the Trojans in the opening round of the Class-5A playoffs and the Trojans again were victorious as they 58-7 win over the Raiders…  The Raiders hung in there with the Trojans for a quarter as the Trojans only led 10-0 after the opening 12 minutes of the game…. The second quarter proved to be the quarter where the Trojans took control of the game as they scored 28 unanswered points to go up 38-0 at the half … The Raiders lone score came with 2:34 left in the game when Chris Jackson capped an 80 yard drive in 14 plays with a 1 yard TD run and Devon Hubner added the PAT…. College Notes:

  • College Football Rankings… Well yesterday if you remember I brought you the FBS AP Poll rankings which had Alabama #1 and Georgia #2… Well yesterday the committee that is in charge of setting the 4 teams that make it into the playoff at the end of the year released their first College Football Rankings and they see things just a little differently… They have Georgia at #1 and Alabama at #2… Spots 3 and 4 are held down by Notre Dame and Clemson… Spots 5 & 6 are occupied by Oklahoma and Ohio State… It’s still a long way to the end of the season when the final rankings come out but it is interesting to see some of the reasoning that they are using to justify the rankings… One thing for sure, it is highly likely that Georgia and Alabama will meet in the SEC Championship to iron out that difference… If you want to see the entire top 25 as the committee sees and the posting and comments on the NCAA website where this is located, click here.

Pros:

PC Notes

  • Kennesaw St. 28 – PC 0… The Blue Hose football team finished a seven-game homestand last Saturday on a sour note as the Kennesaw State Owls took a 28-0 win and improve their record to 7-1 / 3-0 while PC drops to 3-5 / 0-2… The Owls were the pre-season co-favorite to win the Big South this year and they certainly played that way Saturday as they churned out 397 yards of total offense (304 of it rushing) to PC’s 250 yards with only 132 of that rushing… PC got inside the Owl’s 25 yard line 3 times once down to the 10 but just could not punch it in….For more information and stats on the game, click here… PC travels to Monmouth for a 1 pm contest this Saturday.

Congratulations to both teams for the fine showing this past Saturday and also good luck to them this coming Saturay!

College Notes:

  • FBS AP Poll… Well after last weekend’s losses by a couple of top 5 teams a Jerry Lee Lewis song from the mid-sixties comes to mind… “Whole Lotta of Shakin’ Goin’ On” comes to mind as only last week’s #1 Alabama retains it ranking… Undefeated Georgia now claims the #2 spot followed by Ohio State, Wisconsin and Notre Dame all moving up to round out the top 5… Spots 6-10 are occupied by Clemson, Penn State, Oklahoma, Miami (Fla) and TCU… To see the entire top 25 in the AP Poll click here.
  • FCS Coaches Poll… Now there was hardly any change in the top 10 spots of the FCS Coaches Poll… The top 5 in order remain James Madison, North Dakota State, Jacksonville State, Central Arkansas and Sam Houston State… Wofford and Elon both climbed back into the top 1o at #9 & #10 respectively… Samford checks in at #15 and PC’s opponent this Saturday comes in at #24 while their opponent last week (Kennesaw State) is at # 25… To see the entire top 25in the FCS Coaches Poll, click here.

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Clinton 41 – Woodruff 21… The Clinton Red Devil football team knew what they had to do to clinch a playoff spot last Friday and that was very simply defeat the Woodruff Wolverines in Woodruff a very tough place to play… Well they not only defeated the Wolverines but did so in a convincing matter as they took a 41-21 win to punch their ticket to a game this Friday night in Seneca against the Bobcats… The Red Devil offense was their best defense as they pounded out 491 yards of total offense 459 of which were on the ground and the Red Devils had kept the ball for 31:02 of the game while the Wolverines had it only 16:58.. The Red Devils never punted in the game and scored every time they had the ball except once in the second quarter and at the end of the game as they had the ball when the game ended… Clinton had 2 running backs get over 100 yards as Mark Wide led the rushing attack with 244 yards and 3 TDs while Kris Holmes added 180 yards and scored once… Konnor Richardson only threw twice but completed both of them to Elijah Campbell for 32 yards total and one of them was for a TD on a fourth and thirteen from the Woodruff 14 to produce the game’s first score… As you would expect the Red Devils dominated the statistics in the game and if you want to see a quick summary of them, click on the following: CHS+vs+Woodruff+Quickie …. If you want to see a play by play account of the game, click on the following: CHS+vs+Woodruff+Play+by+Play… I’ll have more about Seneca as the week goes along but for now if you want to see the complete Class AAA playoff bracket, click here.

LDHS:

  • Greenwood 34 – Laurens 11… The Raiders went into last Friday night’s game in Greenwood hoping to make it 3 wins in a row against the Eagles but the Eagles quarterback Dre Yarborough would have none of that as he alone rushed for 302 yards and 2 TDs while throwing for 78 yards and a TD as the Eagles took a 34-11 win over the Raiders… Greenwood finished with a total of 512 yards of offense while the Raiders managed just 172 yards 11o of which came off the passing arm of Ryan Campbell… The Raiders were able to drive the ball well at times but just could not finish the drives with points… The Eagles led 31-0 before the Raiders got on the board with 15 seconds left in the third quarter when Campbell connected with Will Tinsley for a 14 yard scoring pass… Campbell hit Deonta Smith in the end zone for the 2-point conversion… The Raiders other score was a 33 yard field goal by Devon Hubner with 1:17 left in the game… For the complete stat package on the game, click on the following:  10-27-17 Laurens at Greenwood Stats … The Raiders will now head to Rock Hill this Thursday for a 7:30 contest in the first round of the Class AAAAA playoffs with the Northwestern Trojans…. CHS:

  • Tennis: Woodruff 4 – Clinton 1… Yesterday I told you that the lady Red Devil tennis team was supposed to play Woodruff in the third round of the AAA Tournament but no one had sent me the score in time to get it on yesterday’s sports report… Well I know have the results of that match up a Woodruff on Wednesday and I must say that the Wolverines ended the Red Devils season by taking a 4-1 win… Mary Catherine Dailey picked up the Red Devils only win as the #2 singles player but a couple of others were close…. For complete match details, click here… Woodruff as you may know is in the same region as the Red Devils and finished second in the region while Clinton finished third in the region… Woodruff advances to play Mid-Carolina for the upper state crown on Monday… Mid-Carolina is in the same region with Clinton and Woodruff and they finished first in the region…  The reason I point this out is to simply say the Red Devils are in a tough region when it comes to girls tennis…  If you would like to look back at their schedule and results for this season, click here.
  • JV FB: Clinton 42 – Woodruff 34… The JV team finishes the season 5-0 in region play… Sorry no details on scoring… To see the team’s schedule and result, click here.

  • 9th Grade: Greenwood 27 – Laurens 6… In the first game last night, the Greenwood Eagles took a 27-6 win over the Raiders… Greenwood used their running game to take a 14-0 lead at the half and the Raiders only score with 1:08 left in the third quarter When Shemare Dendy capped a 55 yard drive with a 1 yard run to make the score 14-6… Greenwood scored twice in the fourth quarter to make the final score 27-0… To see the schedule and results for the Raiders, click here.
  • JV: Laurens 32 – Greenwood 7… Now the news is better for Raider fans where the JV team is concerned as the Raiders took a 32-7 win over the Eagles… The Raiders scored the first time they had the ball as they drove 50 yards with Jackson Mahon carrying it from 1 yard out to make it 6-0 as the two-point conversion failed… Greenwood went 3 and out and after the punt the Raiders drove 43 yards for their second score with 6:54 left in the half… Again Mahon carried in from 1 yard out and Lindin Gault converted the 2-point PAT and the Raiders led 14-0 … The Raiders scored again with less than a minute left in the half when Zachary Miller carried it in from 5 yards out and the score stood 20-0 at the half… The Raiders’ first score of the second half came with 1:23 left on the clock in the third quarter when Mahon connected with Mark McGowan on an 11 scoring pass to make it 26-0 Raiders…. Zachary Miller closed out the Raider scoring early in the fourth quarter on an 8 yard run to make it 32-0… Greenwood avoided the shutout by scoring with 26.3 seconds left in game and getting the PAT to make the final 32-7… Again if you want to see the teams schedule and the result for the JV squad, click here.

Middle School Athletics:

  • FB: GCO 12 – HT 6 in OT… last night the Hickory Tavern Panthers traveled to Gray Court to take on their arch rivals the Gray Court-Owings Tigers… This was the second time the two teams met on the gridiron this season as they played a non-region contest at HT which the Panthers won 8-0… Well yesterday the Tigers turned the tables and took a 12-6 win in overtime… GCO scored first as Hunter Brewington connected with Caleb Franklin on a 15 yard scoring strike in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 6-0… The panthers tied the game as time was running out in the first half as Austin Roach hit Dale Hostetler on a scoring pass… Neither team scored in the second half so the teams went into overtime with GCO getting the ball first…The Tigers scored on the second play in OT as Isaiah Burnside carried it in from the 5… The panthers then got their crack at it but were not able to score which then led o a celebration by the Tigers.

  • LMS 40 – Sanders 14… Yesterday at KC Hanna Stadium the Sanders Yellow Jackets and the LMS Tigers closed out their football season as they met for their annual battle for the mythical City Championship… It was close games at the half as the Tigers only led 14-6 but in the second half the Tigers broke the game open as they went on to take a 40-14 win… The Tigers scored on the first play of the game as Zy’Tavius Todd rambled down the left side for a 55 yard TD… The 2-point conversion was successful as James Rawl connected with Devon Redd to make it 8-0 with 7:26 left in the first quarter… On the third play of the Tigers next possession, sanders Ty Roberson had pick-six that was returned about 70 yards for the score… The extra point conversion failed and the score stood 8-6 Tigers with 3:27 left in the first quarter… Todd had another TD run just before the end of the quarter to make the score 14-6 which is where it stood at the half as neither team score in the second quarter..  The Tigers then went on the score 26 unanswered points in the second half before Sanders finally got on the board with 1:36 left in the game on a 70 yard run by Ty Roberson and the ensuing 2-point conversion made when Andrew Kuykendall connected with Vantavious Butler… In the second half Todd had a 20 yard TD run to give him 3 in the game… Rawl had 2 TD passes one to Devon Redd and the other to Waldrick Burnside… Jay Pulley closed out the scoring for the Tigers when he connected with Tre Massey for a 42 yard score… In addition to his pick-six, Roberson had another interception for the Yellow Jackets.

Pros:

  • World Series Game 2: Astros 7 – Dodgers 6 (11)… Well in case you did not stay up late enough to catch all 11 innings of game 2 of the World Series in LA, I’ll tell you that the Astros evened the series at one game apiece by taking a 7-6 win in 11 innings…  The two teams traded the lead several times and the Astros Marwin Gonzalez tied the game at 3-3 with a homer in the 9th inning to send it into extra innings… Both teams scored twice in the 10th inning and in the 11th the Astros’ George springer had a 2-run homer to give the Astros a 7-5 lead… The Dodgers then scored a run in the bottom of the 11th but the rally fell short as the Astros took the 7-6 win… For more details on the game, click here….
