Laurens County Speedway… I had someone ask me the other day why I did m=not mention the results at the Laurens County Speedway last Saturday night… Well the reason is a simple on, they did not race… I’ll go ahead and tell you that this next week you will not hear any results here because once again tomorrow night they have no races scheduled.

Sports Report for Thursday, 7-16-2020

Local Notes:

SCHSL Changes Sports Schedules… Yesterday the SCHSL Executive Committee voted to accept a modified and more flexible schedule for sports this coming school year especially football… It was chosen over another plan put forth by Lexington School District 1 which would have moved football and some other to the spring of 2021 replacing them with golf, tennis, baseball and softball this fall…A few of the major changes in the plan related to high school football are:

  • The start of all fall sports practices are delayed from July 31st until August at the earliest.
  • Schools will be allowed two scrimmages with other teams and 1 jamboree in the pre-season period.
  • The regular football season will be only 7 games long and will not start until September 11th at the earliest with emphasis on getting region play done as early as possible. Teams who do not need to play that many region games can schedule other teams
  • Playoffs will be reduced to 4 rounds instead of 5 and start October 30th… If all goes well, state finals will be last November 30th.

Teams that do not make the playoffs may add 1 more game at the end of the season to give them a maximum of 8 games… All these dates are subject to change as needed to accommodate COVID conditions. There is a “built in” two week period where everything could be moved back and not interfere with winter sports any more than they have in the past.

Now other fall sports have also had their season calendar modified with none of them starting practice before August 17th… Once completion begins they also are supposed to complete region contest as soon as possible… Now to see the entire SCHSL press release where all of this is laid out, click here… In a media press conference held after the executive committee meeting SCHSL Commissioner Jerome Singleton pointed out that he felt this plan developed by the SCHSL staff gave them the maximum flexibility to cope with the ever changing COVID 19 pandemic and adjust as needed… He did not rule out suspending any sport if needed and finishing it at a later time in the school year if conditions improve… When asked about attendance limitations at contest he pointed out that was not in the jurisdiction of the SCHSL and would be decided by the governor and/or the local school districts

I did speak to one local athletic director last night and was informed that their region had already had a meeting yesterday afternoon to discuss football and volleyball schedule changes in light of the new calendar…I was informed that the region parts of the schedule had been pretty much ironed out in both sports but that there were some lingering questions as to filling out the remainder of the 7-game schedule.

Sports Report for Wednesday, 7-15-2020

Local Notes:

SCHSL Executive Committee Meets This Morning… The SCHSL Executive Committee is scheduled to meet this morning at 8:00 am… I have a copy of their agenda and 4 things stick out on it to me…

  • Information update on return to practice / play… I suspect it will be an update on how many districts have suspended Phase I workouts and maybe id they have Phase II Guidelines ready
  • Review of Sports Seasons for 2020-2021 School Year… Here is where we may have a decision made on at least what will happen this fall… They might skip this one (speculation on my part) until they take u the other two items (below).
  • Lexington County Dist. I Sports Season Proposal… Rumor has it that Lexington I is going to propose switching football (and maybe some other fall sports) to the spring while having baseball, track and some other spring sports this fall
  • Greenville County School District Superintend Request Suspension of in-person workouts… I guess he doesn’t want the other districts that are allowing workouts under Phase I guidelines to get ahead of his schools… If this happens I feel certain there will be no football or other fall sports.

Now if you have the time you can watch this meeting live on SCHSL Facebook Live… I plan on watching it and if anything “BIG” breaks I’ll put up something about it the Local News at WLBG.com and tweet it out also

SCHSL Having a Press Conference at Noon… Now the SCHSL has also scheduled a media press conference at noon today… I have received a link to listen / participate in this conference… My guess is it will answer any questions about anything decided at the Executive Committee meeting… Just speculation on my part but again I’ll keep you posted on anything major today or just cover it on my Sports Report tomorrow.

Suggestion for SCHSL… I do have a suggestion concerning fall sports for the SCHSL… Follow the example of some college conferences and play region games only since they are the only thing used for playoff seeding… You can start later that way and then go to the playoffs… Of course if they do that, the Clinton-Laurens game will not happen this year… You can also block off rows in the stands and limit attendance to allow social distancing… Just a wild idea from a crazy old man.

COVID-19 FALLOUT

  • Patriot League Cancels Fall Sports… As you may recall last week I told you that the Ivy League had cancelled all fall sports for all the traditional fall sports… Well yesterday the Patriot League announced a similar decision… For those of you not familiar with the tames in the league they are American Univ., Boson Univ., Bucknell, Holly Cross, Colgate, Lafayette and Lehigh, Loyola… Now Army and Navy also participate in this league but the ban on fall sports did not include the two military academies because “they are unique in their environments and their missions within higher education”… The academies may continue to engage in competitive opportunities as considered appropriate by their respective Superintendents… If you would like to see the full statement on the Patriot League website click here… They did say that strength and conditioning could continue provided that health and safety precautions are in place and that decisions concerning winter and spring sports will be made at a later date.
  • CIAA Also Suspends Fall Sports… Also last Thursday it was announced that the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) will also suspend fall sports… Again they made this decision due to the uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic and when students will be able to return to school in states where infection rates are on the rise… To see the full release posted on the CIAA website click here and it will also give you a list of the member schools in the association… They do mention in the release the remote chance some of the sports might move to the spring… Now this move does have ramifications locally as that has caused the cancellation of the PC football game at Johnson C. Smith in Charlotte, NC on September 12th… If you would like to see the PC press release concerning this click here.
  • Pac-12 to Play League Only Games This Fall… Last Friday as you may recall I told you that the Big Ten Conference announced that if the conference is able to participate in fall sports (men’s and women’s cross country, field hockey, football, men’s and women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball) completion will be limited to conference opponents only based on medical advice…. Over the weekend the Pac-12 made a similar announcement… They announced that football, men’s and women’s soccer and women’s volleyball, would schedule Conference-only games, and that it is “delaying the start of mandatory athletic activities, until a series of health and safety indicators, which have recently trended in a negative direction, provided sufficient positive data to enable a move to a second phase of return-to-play activities”… Note they are hoping to be able to play these sports but it sounds like they are not ruling out the chance of canceling them altogether and are starting everything later to give them more time to make that decision… To read the entire statement on the PAC 12 website click here… The conference is made up of the University of Arizona, Arizona State University, the University of California, Berkeley, the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA), the University of Colorado, the University of Oregon, Oregon State University, Stanford University, the University of Southern California, the University of Utah, the University of Washington and Washington State University.

NASCAR… The NASCAR drivers were all up at the Kentucky Speedway over the weekend.

  • Rookie Cole Custer wins Cup Race Yesterday… The Cup Series cars took over the track yesterday as they ran the Quaker State 400 and when the checkered flag finally dropped it was waved first over rookie Cole Custer as he picked up his first the win on the last lap with a gutsy four-wide pass… A caution late in the race set the stage for a 2-lap shootout where he was fifth when the green flag dropped setting the stage for his decisive pass to take the win on the final lap just .271 seconds over Martin Trues Jr… It had looked like that Kevin Harvick was going to take the win (he finished fourth) but he blew a tire with about a lap to go allowing the others to catch up and pass him as he battled the blown tire… Click here to go to the NASCAR site where there is more on this story and a link when you get there to the complete final results.
  • Xfinity Races… The Xfinity racers had the track twice this past weekend… As you may recall as I reported Friday, Austin Cindric won the Xfinity race on Thursday night… Well he turned right back around and won another Xfinity race on Friday night leading 130 of the 200 laps… He finished a whopping (for NASCAR it’s whopping) 2.62 seconds ahead of Chase Briscoe… This was the first time a NASCAR driver won national series races on consecutive nights since The King Richard Petty did it back in 1971… Click here to go to the NASCAR site where there is more on this story and a link when you get there to the complete final results…  An interesting note on the race is that after the race was over Harrison Burton and Noah Gragson did not practice social distancing as a discussion they were having on pit row resulted in a few punches being thrown and the two had to be separated by crews and NASCAR officials…. To see a brief video clip of this click here.
  • Gander Truck Series… The Gander Truck Series ran up in Kentucky late Saturday afternoon and Sheldon Creed picked up the win there… The race was shortened to just 71 laps (it was scheduled for 150 laps) due to rain and lightning that moved through the area… Click here to go to the NASCAR site where there is more on this story and a link when you get there to the complete final results.
  • Menards ARCA Series Races… Now they were also supposed to run two Menards ARCA Series races on Saturday but weather caused one of them to be postponed… They did get in the General Tire 100 and Ty Gibbs won that race… Once again if you want more details on the race, click here to go to their website.

COVID-19 Related:

  • Governor McMaster Warns of the Possibility of No Football… If you are like me you most likely don’t mind missing the first few minutes of any TV newscast because you know that it is more than likely going to be mostly a COVID-19 update telling how many new cases we had the day before, how many deaths there were reported the day before and other details in South Carolina, North Carolina and Georgia as well as the upstate local counties… We all know it is out there and I think we all know what we should do to limit it but I’m just tired of hearing about it… Well yesterday in one of his almost daily COVID-19 updates Governor Henry McMaster said something I hope all sports fans take to heart… He simply said that if the number of COVID-19 cases continues to rise, there is a very real possibility that high school and college football may not occur… He will simply ban them and other mass gatherings like other fall sports, concerts and events… Stop and let that sink in sports fans… No football… That is a scenario that schools don’t like to think about as football is the big money maker for athletic departments that more often than not helps fund other sports thus the effects of this will more than likely reach well past football season should that happen… OK you know what you can do to help stop the rise in COVID-19 cases; you’ve heard it a million times…
    1. Wear a mask when going out in public as much as you can.
    2. If you have any symptoms don’t go out at all and call you doctor… Don’t just go, call first.
    3. Wash your hands often and/or use hand sanitizer especially after being in public or at home if you think a family member may be coming down with it… By the way don’t use the same cloth towel to dry your hands multiple times, use paper towel.
    4. Also if you think you are a family member is coming down with it or has come down with it, stay home and quarantine yourselves… Don’t go out and possibly spread it around
    5. Don’t touch your face, mouth or eyes while being out in public… If you really watch yourself you will be surprised how many times you do this without even thinking about it.

Bottom line, if you want sports back something close to what we use to call normal we ALL are going to have to do this.. PLEASE !

  • More Schools Stop Summer Workouts… On a related note, the other day I saw former Raider and now Greenwood football coach Chris Liner pulling into his hose late that afternoon… I pulled in behind him just to say hello and catch up with him and I ask him if they were still having summer workouts because Greenville, Laurens and Clinton had just announced the suspension of summer workouts… He said they were and a quick check early this morning of the Greenwood HS Athletic website and the Index Journal shows no suspension notice so I guess they still are… I also ask him if he had any idea how many districts in the state had suspended them and he said he thought it was about half… A quick Google check early this morning seems to support that notion as just a few of the local area schools I saw are Union, Newberry, Ware Shoals (which was supposed to start them July 6) Pickens and a multitude of mid and lower state schools… The last I heard about SCISA schools (like Laurens Academy) were still were greenlighted to continue summer workouts… Try it yourself and Google “South Carolina High Schools that have suspended summer workouts” and see what you come up with… Bottom line, most all the schools are in the same leaking boat.

Major League Baseball

  • Minor League Season Canceled… Yesterday it was announced that the Minor League baseball season has been cancelled… The Minor Leagues were established in 1901 and this is the first time a season has been canceled since then… “These are unprecedented times for our country and our organization as this is the first time in our history that we’ve had a summer without Minor League Baseball played,” MiLB president Pat O’Conner said in a statement. “While this is a sad day for many, this announcement removes the uncertainty surrounding the 2020 season and allows our teams to begin planning for an exciting 2021 season of affordable family entertainment.”… If you would like to read the entire posting about this on the MLB website click here…. The Greenville News also has a posting about it and it concentrates on the Greenville Drive aspect of the story… Click here to read that posting.
  • Some MLB Players Opting Out of 2020 Season… As you may recall I mentioned to you earlier that MLB is supposed to start a 60 game season later this month Well some MLB players are opting out of the shortened 2020 season according to an article in USA Today… One example is the Washington Nationals part-time first baseman Ryan Zimmerman… He says he is not retiring just choosing not to play due to some “family issues” and the COVIID-19 virus… There are other who have also made similar their teams have publicly supported them, it may be in part they are doing that will allow the teams not to have to pay them in the cash-strapped environment the teams find themselves in The article also mentions two WNBA stars who will skip the upcoming season and some NBA starts who will opt out… To read more on this and find out those players are click here.
  • MLB Will Not Disclose Names of Players Who Test Positive… One of the new allowances for the COVID-19 virus during the MLB season this year is that the teams will be allowed more room on their injured reserve list for players who test positive for the virus… However according to an article also in USA Today they will not specifically disclose the name of a player put there for that reason… This is to keep the teams in compliance with the collective bargaining agreements with the players that states that for any medical condition not related to employment “a club may disclose only the fact that a medical condition is preventing the player from rendering services to the club and the anticipated length of the player’s absence from the club.”… To read the entire article click here.

  •  SCHSL Executive Committee Make Guidelines Mandatory… As you may recall back in late May the SCHSL issued some suggested guidelines for team to follow as they returned for summer workouts starting June 1… If you don’t remember what the Phase I Guidelines were click here to go to the SCHSL website where they are listed… After they were released was asked what would be the penalty if these guidelines were not followed… His stock answer was “we may not have fall sports”… Well yesterday the SCHSL Executive Committee had a virtual meeting and after much discussion concerning the increase of COVID-19 cases across the state they voted to make those guidelines required and if not followed or do more than the guidelines allow it would be an illegal practice and would be subject to penalties… Now time does not allow me to list the specific penalties for 1, 2 and 3 times in violation but they do include fines, loss of practice days and scrimmages and can go as high as not being allowed to host any events and be the home team in playoffs… To see the complete list of penalties enacted click here.

NASCAR

  • Blaney Wins by a Whisker at Talladega… It was a wild and wooly finish at the rain delayed GEOCO 500 yesterday that saw Ryan Blaney win by just .007 seconds in front of Ricky Stenhouse Jr… There was a late caution in the race that caused the race to do to overtime and as the cars approached the finish line to take the checkered flag there was some pumping going on that caused Aric Almirola to slide across the finish line sideways to claim third… For more information on this race including a link to the complete order of finish click here to go to the NASCAR website.
  • Drivers & Crews Show Support for Bubba Wallace… Before the race got started there was a great show of support for Bubba Wallace the black driver whose crew found a noose in the his garage at Talladega on Sunday… They actually pushed his car to the front of the starting grid before the race and car owner Richard Petty was there to support him… Petty had not been to any of the races since the COVID-19 pandemic began but was there yesterday… For more on this click here.

PGA Tour:

  • Simpson Wins the Heritage… The PGA Tour made it annual stop down on Hilton Head Island this past weekend as the RBC Heritage took place after being delayed from back in April by the COVID-19 virus… Yesterday’s final round finished a little before dark as the start was delayed by rain down on the coast… The final round saw several golfers in contention but when the last ball rolled into the hole Webb Simpson has picked up his second win of the season shooting a 64 in the final round giving him a 22 under par 262 to finish one stroke ahead of Abraham Ancer…. He birdied 5 of the last 7 holes to take the win… Greenville’s Bill Haas did make the cut but finished in a tie for 48th shooting a 10 under par 274… For more on this story including a link to final order of finish click here.

NASCAR… The Talladega Speedway was the site of 2 races this past Saturday and will be the site of a third race today weather permitting.

  • Drew Dollar Wins the ARCA Menards Series Race… On Saturday the ARCA Menards Series racers took to the track for the first time since the COVID-19 pandemic hit and a 19-year-old driver by the name of Drew Dollar picked up $10,000 by winning the General Tire 200… It was his first win in the series which he has raced in 5 times over the last two seasons… For more information on this race click here.
  • Justin Haley Gets First Xfinity Win… Later in the day on Saturday the Xfinity Series drivers took to the track and 21-year-old Justin Haley picked up his first win ever in the Xfinity Series as he edged out Ross Chastain by just .299 seconds after a late restart that saw him take the win… Something a little unusual occurred after the race in that instead of climbing out of the driver-side window after the race he climbed out of the right side window… He said he was looking after a signature move after winning a race and be the littlest guy out there he said he was the only one who could still do it but it was a struggle… For more information on this race click here to go to the NASCAR site where you will find a link to the race results.
  • Mother Nature Wins Cup Series Race Yesterday… Now for the casual NASCAR fans who got up this morning looking to see who won the Cup Series race yesterday at Talladega I’ll tell you that Mother Nature won as rain and lightning caused the race not to go off on schedule… They will hope to get the GEICO 500 started today at 3:00 pm weather permitting… Martin Truex Jr. has the pole and Denny Hamlin will be on the outside of row 1.
  • Sad & Outrageous Act Reported at Talladega Yesterday… I hesitate to bring this up as I don’t like to give those who do such things air time but the national media and NASCAR are reporting that a noose was found in the garage stall of the #43 team yesterday at Talladega by a member of the Richard Petty Motorsports crew which runs the #43 car… Now for the casual NASCAR fans out there who may not be aware of it the #43 car is driven by Bubba Wallace the only black driver in the Cup Series… NASCAR has issued a very strong statement about this incident and Wallace who reportedly did not see the noose has also issued a statement about this vowing not to let it hamper him in his quest… Several of the NASCAR drivers have also already posted comment backing Wallace and condemning the act… To go to the NASCAR site for more information on this including the NASCAR statement and Wallace’s Twitter response to this click here… Personally acts like this make me sick to my stomach and there is absolutely no place for this in sports period!

LDHS:

  • Raiders Finish First Four Days of Workouts… Yesterday I stopped by LDHS where the Raider football team was ending up its first 4 days of workout in preparation for the upcoming football season… As I reported earlier the Raiders were breaking down the workouts into 2 sessions with 7 groups in each session to be able to comply with all the distancing guideline as set forth by the SCHSL in Phase I of reopening… Coach Daryl Smith was well pleased with the turnout and effort and I dis a short interview with him after workouts were over… To hear that interview click here and then click on the play (►) button.

NASCAR

  • Schedule for This Weekend… NASCAR takes its racing down to Talladega this weekend for 3 races… Tomorrow the ARCA Series will make its initial return to the track with the General Tire 200 at 2 pm our time… Then at 5:30 the Xfinity Series will take over the track for the Unhinged 300… Sunday will see the Cup Series race at 3:00 pm in the GRICO 500… As you may recall, the Cup Series race had about 1000 “guest” in attendance and I found out they were mostly military personnel… Well this week NASCAR says it will allow 5000 fans in but none will be on the infield…. Sports Report for Thursday, 6-18-2020

College Sports:

  • Two Former Clemson Players Nominated for College Football Hall of Fame… It’s been over 10 years since Clemson had one of its former football players inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame… Well that drought could be broken next year according to a story from USA Today Sports and reprinted in the Greenville News today… Former Clemson greats C.J. Spiller and Donnell Woolford will appear on the ballot for voting for the Class of 2021… Spiller played for the Tigers from 2006-09 and won numerous awards and set just as many records during his time with the Tigers… He is also a former Pro Bowl participant during his 8 seasons in the NFL… Woolford played for the Tigers from 1985-1988 as a defensive back, He also won numerous awards and played in the NFL for 9 years also making the Pro Bowl once… Now for more information on this story including more information on these two players, who else is on the ballot and the timeline for the balloting and announcement process, click here.

PGA Tour:

  • PGA Tour Stops at Harbor Town This Weekend… well for those of you who like to knock that little white ball around this weekend sees the PGA Tour make its annual stop down on Hilton Head Island for the RBC Heritage… True it is a little bit later than usual this year but as I sure you know you can blame that on the COVID -19 pandemic… The tournament actually starts today with some tee times as early as 6:56 am… Now just like last week Greenville’s Bill Haas will be in the field and let’s hope he does better than last week when he failed to make the cut at the Charles Schwab Invitational out in Texas… Also like last week, it appears that the tournament will be Tigerless as Tiger Woods is not listed in the field… Also like last week there will be no fans on the course so don’t go driving down to Hilton Head expecting to watch it… You’ll have to tune in to the usual sources on TV to watch… Now to find out what TV outlets will carry the tournament and most anything else about the tournament you want to know click here to go to the PGA Tour website where that information is available.

NASCAR

    • Earnhardt Jr. Leads Class of Three Elected to NASCAR HOF for 2021… In case you missed it, a couple of days ago NASCAR announced who would be in the latest members to enter their Hall of Fame next winter as part of the Class of 2021… There are only 3 who will be inducted and one of them is 15 time fan favorite and still an occasional driver in the Xfinity series Dale Earnhardt Jr… He led the voting in his first year on the ballot with his name appearing on 76% of the ballots cast… Now are 2 others who will be joining him and they are Mike Stefanik and Red Farmer… Stefanik is a former Modified and Busch North Divisions and is considered from the Modern Era… Farmer is the one person chosen from the Pioneer Era and was a founding member of the Alabama Gang and a 4-time regional champion… Now for more on this story click here to go to the NASCAR posting on it.
