Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Tennis: Union County 4 – Clinton 3… Last night on the tennis courts at Clinton MS the Union County Yellow Jackets and the Clinton Red Devils girls’ tennis teams faced off for the third time this season… Each team had taken a win on the others home court so this was the “tie-breaker” match for the teams and something more was at stake… The winner would advance to the Upper State Finals in the SCHSL Class-AAA Tennis Tournament…  Unfortunately for Red Devil fans the “win on the other team’s home court” continued last night as Union took a 4-3 win… When singles action concluded the Red Devils led 3-2 as Mary Catherine Dailey (6-2 & 6-2), Gerri Hill (3-6, 6-3 & 10-8) and Reese Gowan (6-4 & 6-0) had defeated their opponents on the court… Then it was time for the two doubles teams to take the court… The #2 doubles team composed of Mary Grace Johnson and Gracie Wiggins lost 5-7 and 2-6 and that allowed Union to tie the match 3-3… The #1 doubles team made up of M.C Dailey and Gracie Spangler lost their first set 4-6 and then seemed to run out of gas losing the second set 2-6 to give the Yellow Jackets a 4-3 win thus advancing to the Upper State Finals next Monday against the winner of the Chapman vs. Mid-Carolina match held yesterday… The Red Devils are to be congratulated on a season where they finished second in the region!   Click here for a few photos from the match.
  • Freeman Signs with Brevard College… Catching up on a note from CHS that I almost let fall through the crack, late last week CHS senior soccer player Riley Freeman signed a letter of intent to continue his education and soccer career at Brevard College next fall playing for the Tornados… PC, Newberry and Erskine College were other schools he considered but chose Brevard over those for a few reasons including facilities and the possibility of getting more playing time there quickly… Riley plays several positions and has not yet decided on a major…. Congratulations to Riley!

  • AP Football Poll… If you would like to compare the latest AP Poll to the Football Playoff Rankings I will tell you that there is a little bit of difference… Alabama and Clemson are the top two teams in the AP Poll but spots 4 & 5 are flipped when compared to the Playoff Rankings with Notre dame #3 and LSU #4… spots 5 & 6 are identical (Michigan and Georgia) in both polls… To see the entire top 25 in the AP Poll click here
  • FCS Coaches Poll… For those of you who like to keep up with the FCS Coaches Poll I’ll tell you that the top two teams are unchanged as North Dakota State and Kennesaw State continue to hold down those spots in that order… The closest team to us in the top 10 is Elon who holds down spot the #6 spot and the only South Carolina school in the top 25 is Wofford who checks in at #8… To see the entire top 25 in the FCS Coaches Poll click here.

Good Luck to the Red Devils… Go Big Red!

Middle School Athletics:

  • Wright MS 16 – Laurens MS 14… Last night at KC Hanna Stadium the Laurens MS Tigers hosted the Wright MS Wildcats from Abbeville in a game that determined their league championship… The Wildcats came into the game undefeated and when it was over they were still undefeated as they took a 16-14 win over the Tigers but it was in doubt right up until there were 40 seconds left in the game… The Wildcats got on the board first scoring after a short drive with 41 seconds left in the first quarter to go up 8-0… The two teams battled back and forth the rest of the half until the Tigers scored on a 2 yard run by Jay Pulley with 59 seconds left in the half… The two point conversion failed and the score stood 8-6…The score was set up by a 63 yard pass from James Rawl to Cayson Elledge which got the ball to the Wildcat 2 yard line… At the end of the Tigers first possession in the second half the Tigers were forced to punt and had the punt blocked giving the Wildcats the ball at the Tigers 10 yard line… Two plays later they scored and converted on the two-point attempt to go up 16-6…Late in the third quarter the Tigers recovered a Wildcat fumble at the Tiger 47 yard line… Nine plays later Jay Pulley carried the ball in from the 1 yard line and also caught the 2-point conversion pass from Rawl to make the score 16-14 with 6:38 left in the game.. The Tigers got the ball back with 3:51 left in the game and started a 14 play drive that was able to continue as Rawl scrambled often to hit his receivers and did so on 2 fourth down plays… The Tigers had the ball first and goal to go at the Wildcat 10 yard line… That is when a Wildcat defender stepped in front of the intended receiver in the end zone to pick of Rawl’s pass and run it out to about the 20 yard line before being tackled and then all the Wildcat had to do was take a knee to seal the win… Afterwards Coach Graydon expressed nothing but pride in how his team competed not only in this game but the season… Congratulation to both teams on what a great ball game… To see a slideshow of a few photos from the game, click here.

Any funds raised will not supplant existing funding from LCSD 55 but we want to enhance the pride and possibilities inherent in our athletic programs… The funds raised will go toward ensuring adequate resources for travel to camps, scrimmages, and other activities that improve student-athlete performance but may stretch the regular season travel budget… The different coaches are compiling a “wish list” of items they would like to see the monies go toward… If you would like you to be a part of our Team of 1,000. Just a $55 gift from each member of our Team of 1,000 will help us reach our goal of $55,000. By donating to the Team of 1,000 fundraising campaign, you are helping the student-athlete experience; you are also joining many others in a commitment to athletic excellence in Laurens…. • Laurens 42 – JL Mann 14… The Raiders traveled to Greenville last Friday night to take on the JL manna riots and they also needed a win to enhance their playoff chances… Good news for Raider fans as they rolled to a 28-0 lead at the half and then went on to take a 42-14 win over the Patriots… For only the 3rd time this season the Raiders had fewer turnovers than their opponents and that played a big part in the game as the Raiders did not “shot themselves in the foot” as has been the case too often this season… The Raiders dominated the Patriots in every statistical category as they rolled to 389 yards of total offense to the Patriots 278 and held the ball for 32:35 compared to the Patriots 15:25… Shamare Dendy led the Raiders in rushing with 113 yards and 2 TDs while Dwayne Martin had 91 yards and 3 TDs… The Raiders other TD came on a 23 yard pass from Ryan Campbell to Zachariah Miller… For a short version of the game stats, click here… For a play-by-play accounting of the game click here… Laurens improves its record to 3-5 on the season and 2-3 in region play… The Raiders travel to TL Hanna to take on the undefeated Yellow Jackets this Friday night.

Laurens Academy

  • Jefferson Davis 83 – Laurens Academy 44… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Blackville Friday night to take on the Jefferson Davis Academy Raiders a team that had been putting up a lot of points and had suffered only 1 loss… It is also a team that had a roster with almost twice the number of players as the Crusaders… In the end the Raiders took an 83 – 44 win over the Crusades but they knew they had been in a fight as the Crusader only trailed 38-24 at the half… The second half the numbers game and fatigue hurt the Crusaders as most Crusaders play both ways with few subs unlike the Raiders.. All of the Crusaders points came on TD passes (one a shuttle pass) by Thomas Lowry… Lowry had 3 TD passes to Charlton McCall, 2 to Cal Robertson and 1 to Dalton Foster… McCall also caught two 2-point conversions and Robertson caught 1… Lowry also rushed for a 2-point conversion… Lowry now has 53 TD passes in his high school career… The Crusaders will travel down to Edgefield this Thursday night in a 7:00 pm to take on the Wardlaw Patriots
