Mrs. Madge Gray

Mrs. Madge Gray, age 86, of 498 Bramlett Road, Laurens, SC, died Friday, April 11, 2014 at the Laurens County Hospital, Clinton, SC. 

She was born a daughter of the late Henry Abrams and the late Susie Wallace Abrams. She was a homemaker and a member of Beaverdam Baptist Church.

She is survived by her husband, Reverend James A. Gray, Sr. of the home; two sons, James A. (Jeraldine) Gray, Jr. of Greenville, SC and Keith (Gwenevere) Gray of Simpsonville, SC; three daughters, Phyllis Wise of Cincinnati, OH, Mary J. (Leon) Ferguson of Greenville, SC and Susie G. (Yancy) Williams of Gray Court, SC; seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. 

Funeral service will be held 2pm, Tuesday, April 15, 2014 at the Flat Ruff Baptist Church, with the Dr. O. T. Hill officiating. Burial will be in the Beaverdam Baptist Church Cemetery.  The family is at the home.

Mr. Billy Ray Johnson

Mr. Billy Ray Johnson, age 64, formerly of Laurens, SC, died Wednesday, April 9, 2014 in White Plains, Maryland. 

He was born in Laurens County, SC, a son of the late Jessie Pearl Johnson and the husband of Angela Johnson. He is survived by his wife Angela :Angie” Johnson of the home; a son, Steven Johnson of Charlotte, NC; one sister, Sandra McGowan Scott of Laurens, SC.

Funeral service will be held, 11:00a.m., Tuesday, April 16, 2014 at the Mt. Ennon Baptist Church, Clinton, MD. Burial will be in a local cemetery.

Miss. Barbara Wilson

Miss. Barbara Wilson, age 71, formerly of 113 Fielding Lane, Fountain Inn, died Thursday, April 10, 2014 at the Hospice of Laurens County Hospice House, Clinton, SC. 

She is survived by one sister, Sharon Robinson of Greenville, SC.

The family will receive friends 1-3pm on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in the chapel of Beasley Funeral Home 205 Knight Street.

Margie Lee Willis McMahan

Margie Lee Willis McMahan, age 79, of 1410 Deer Valley Road, and wife of Thomas Love McMahan, Sr, passed away on Friday, April 11, 2014, at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood.

Born in Taylors, she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Azilee Edwards Willis.  Mrs. McMahan retired from Kemet and was a member of Rabun Creek Baptist Church in Hickory Tavern.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Robert Reid “Bub” Duncan of Greenville; step-children, Susan Lollis of Simpsonville, Cathy Leming of Kingsport, TN, and Thomas L. McMahan, Jr. of Laurens; a brother, Thomas Eugene Willis of Greenville, eight grandchildren, and fourteen great-grandchildren.

In addition to her parents, Margie was predeceased by two children, Thomas Irvin Duncan and Vickie Lee Duncan.

Funeral services will be held at 12:00 pm on Tuesday, April 15, 2014, at Rabun Creek Baptist Church conducted by Dr. Clarence Adkins with burial following in the church cemetery.

The family will be at the residence and will receive friends at the church from 11:00 am to 12:00 pm on Tuesday.

Mrs. Virginia Shelton Simpson

Mrs. Virginia Shelton Simpson, 59, of 178 Shelton Circle,Clinton died Tuesday at her residence. She is survived by her husband, Paul Simpson;

also by 1 son, 1 daughter, 2 brothers, 4 sisters and 2 grandchildren.

 Funeral Services for the late Virginia Simpson will be held Saturday afternoon, April 12th at 3:00 o’clock at the Antioch AME Church of Highway 56 north of Clinton. Rev. Anthony Sims will be the eulogist. Burial will follow in the Church Cemetery.

Raymond Rogerdale “Darrell” Weathers

Raymond Rogerdale “Darrell” Weathers, 69, of 315 Southview Dr. and husband of Janice Brown Weathers, passed away Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at Greenville Memorial Hospital.

Born in Gray Court, he was the son of the late Charles Raymond and Fannie Grace Ross Weathers.  A retired SC National Guard veteran, Mr. Weathers was a member of Second Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, sound technician, and member of the Knights of the King Sunday School Class.  Mr. Weathers was a faithful volunteer with the Laurens City Fire Department for 38 years and coordinated the tractor show and “farm days” for Squealin on the Square.  He was a devoted husband, loving father, and Papa.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by:  daughters, Julie Weathers Wideman and husband Jeff and Joy Weathers Driggers and husband Phillip all of Greenwood, sister, Edwina Weathers DuPre and husband Jack of Rock Hill; mother-in-law, Mildred Brown of Laurens; brother-in-law, Steve Hinton of Gray Court; and grandchildren, Savannah Wideman, Anna Grace Cox, and Noah Driggers.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a sister Joyce Weathers Hinton and father-in-law, Robert Lewis Brown.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Friday, April 11, 2014, at Second Baptist Church, conducted by the Rev. J.D. Shiflet with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery, with Fireman Honors.

The family will be at the home and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary on Thursday, April 10, from 6:30-8:30 pm.

Willie Lee “Bill” Turner

Willie Lee “Bill” Turner was born May 2, 1944 to Ms. Queen Esther Turner in Laurens, South Carolina.

Willie Lee “Bill” Turner was a graduate of Sanders High School Class of 1962.  After high school he attended Claflin University in Orangeburg, SC where he received his Bachelor’s Degree.  Upon finishing at Claflin University, “Bill”, as everyone knew him as, attended Niagara University in Niagara Falls, NY and UNC-Charlotte in Charlotte, NC, where he obtained one Master’s Degree from both institutions, leaving him with two Master’s Degree.

Among all of Bill’s academic accomplishments he also served in the United States Army in 1966.

 “Bill” was really known for being the owner of many successful automotive dealership shops; one in particular was Cumberland Chrysler Dealership.  After much success, he later retired from being an automotive dealer.

Willie Lee “Bill” Turner passed on Saturday, April 5, 2014 at his home, leaving many memories and loving family behind.

Left to cherish memories is his loving mother Ms. Queen Esther Turner of Laurens, SC and his wife, Mrs. Roma E. Turner of Laurens, SC.; one son, Andre Williams of Richmond, Virginia, two daughters Leah Deshaun Turner of Laurens, SC and Tiffany P. Pryor of Richmond, Virginia, and three grandchildren.

Services for Willie Lee “Bill” Turner were held Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 2:00 P.M. at the David and Jeannette Goins Chapel in Laurens, SC.

Reverend Earl Lewers was the officiating minister.

Burial was held at Zion Hill Baptist Church in Cross Hill, SC.

Ms. Hattie Hill, age 77, of 184 Walden Street, Clinton, SC, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 at the National Healthcare Center of Laurens. 

She is the last survivor of her immediate family.

Miss. Bertha Stephens, age 58, formerly of Laurens, died Sunday, April 6, 2014 in the Glorified Health and Rehab, Greenville, SC.  She is survived by two brothers and one sister.

Edna Levone Craine Burts

Edna Levone Craine Burts, 98, and widow of Rev. Fred Burts, passed away, Saturday, April 5, 2014, at National Healthcare Center in Laurens.

Born in Laurens, she was a daughter of the late George and Inez Eubanks Craine.  A member of Gray Court Church of God and the Church of God Ladies Auxiliary, she was a loving and faithful minister’s wife.

She is survived by:  a daughter, Carolyn Burts Shaw of Dearing, GA; grandchildren, Levone Alverson and Sharon Alverson both of Ft. Inn, Thomas Clark of Gatlinburg, TN, Mark Burts of Pensacola FL, Azure Burts of Atlanta, GA, and Marcus Robert Burts of Laurens; 13 great grandchildren, and 8 great-great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by 2 sons, Fred Robert Burts and Thomas Burts; a sister, Cora Lee Riddle, and brothers, Paul, David, William, and Bryan Craine.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, April 8, 2014, at The Kennedy Mortuary Chapel, conducted by Rev. Jamie Hughes, Rev. Mickey Thomas, and Rev. Thomas Clark followed by burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

Mr. Jerry Lee Boyd

 

Mr. Jerry Lee Boyd, age 53, of 113 Tripmont Court, Simpsonville, died Friday, April 4, 2014 at Greenville Memorial Hospital. 

He was born in Greenville County, SC a son of the late John T. Sullivan and the late Betty Ann Childress and husband of the late Elaine Stoddard Boyd. He was a machine operator for Crovac with thirty years of service. 

He is survived by a daughter, Jerrica Boyd of the home; one brother, Bobby Boyd of Simpsonville, SC; three sisters, Linda Dial, of Simpsonville, Carol Ann Boyd of Greenville, and Donna Hooker of Simpsonville; two grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 2 p.m., Wednesday, April 9, 2014 at the Mt. Carmel AME Church, with Rev. Cornell Richardson and Rev. Hiram Spain, III officiating.  Burial will be in the church cemetery  The family is at the home.

Mrs. Barbara Luster

Mrs. Barbara Luster, age 74, of 207 Truman Street, Laurens, died Tuesday, April 1, 2014. 

A daughter of the late Ulysses Franklin and Hattie Simpson Franklin and wife of Luther Thomas Luster, Sr., she was a member of the St. Paul First Baptist Church and a retiree of the Laurens Glass Company. 

She is survived by her husband, Luther T. Luster, Sr. of the home; one son, Luther T. Luster, Jr. of Cheltenham, Maryland; one daughter, Wanda (Richard) Andrews of Spartanburg, SC; one stepson, Otis McDowell of Laurens, SC; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren.  Funeral service was held 1 p.m., Saturday, April 5, 2014 at the St. Paul First Baptist Church, with Rev. Larry Chapman officiating.  Burial was in the Calvary Memorial Gardens.  Beasley Funeral Home, Laurens was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Virginia Motes Leopard

Mary Virginia Motes Leopard, age 61, of 80 Cheyenne Drive, and wife of Charlie Ray Leopard, passed away on Thursday, April 3, 2014, at the Laurens County Hospice House.

Born in Joanna, she was a daughter of the late George Washington Motes, Sr. and Effie Morgan Motes.  She worked in the textile industry and was of the Church of God faith.

Surviving in addition to her husband are a son, Brandon Cudd and wife Jessica of Clinton; a grandson, Gabriel Cudd; a sister, Juanita Vanderford of Greenwood; and a brother, George McCullough of Whitmire; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by siblings, George W. “Bud” Motes, Jr, Gertrude Garland, Valerie Teasley, and Joyce Hill.

Funeral services will be held at 3:00 pm, Saturday, April 5, 2014, at The Kennedy Mortuary Chapel conducted by Rev. James K. Hamilton with burial following in Dials United Methodist Church Cemetery.

Larry R. Pittman

Larry R. Pittman, 57 of 1200 Stewart Road, died March 28, 2014 at Laurens County Hospice Home.

A native of Spartanburg County he was the son of the late Arthur Pittman and Lillian Gwinn Pittman. He was a graduate of Woodruff High School and a U. S. Air Force veteran.

Survivors include one sister, Margie (Charlie J.) Starnes of Duncan, SC; one brother, Ken (Joan) Pittman of Clinton, SC; one granddaughter, Adriyanna Wilburn of Cross Key, SC. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Starla Wilburn.

Robert Earl Riddle

Robert Earl Riddle, age 94, of Laurens, and husband of Taeko Riddle, passed away on Tuesday, March 25, 2014.

Born in Gray Court, he was a son of the late Claude and Belle Shuler Riddle.  Mr. Riddle was a US Navy Veteran of World War II; he retired from the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) in Maui, HI, and was a member of First Baptist Church of Laurens.

Surviving in addition to his wife are three children, Jerry Riddle of Anchorage, AK, Margaret Renslen and husband Troy of Denver, CO, and Carol Satate and husband Kenichi of Harrison, NY; one brother, Buddy Riddle of Laurens; one sister, Lois Bowers of Laurens; and two grandchildren, Dylan Renslen and Julian Satate.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers Harold and Jack Riddle.

Graveside services with military honors will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, March 29, 2014, at Warrior Creek Baptist Church Cemetery conducted by Rev. Rickey Letson.

Allen Joseph Dye

Allen Joseph Dye, 65, of 114 Pinehaven St. and husband of Carolyn Fisher Dye, passed away Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at St. Francis Hospital in Greenville.

Born in Cleveland, OH, he was a son of the late J. Edgar and Katherine May Dye.  A member of First United Methodist Church of Laurens, Mr. Dye worked in retail management for many years.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: a son, Bryan Joseph Dye of Houston, TX; siblings, Dianne Dye Cotter and husband Julian of Alachua, FL, David Howard Dye of Cleveland, OH, and Deborah Dye Farver and husband Michael of Cleveland OH.

Ms. Annie Bell Jeter, 89 was born on November 5, 1924 to the late Reverend Nathaniel and Lillie Bell Young in Laurens, SC.

She was a former employee of Crystal Cleaning Service.

Ms. Annie Bell Jeter left to be with the Lord on Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at Wallace Thomson Hospital in Union, SC.

Left the cherish fond memories are 2 brothers; Nathaniel Young of Washington, DC, and John Young of Bolton, NC, two aunts; Lourene Philson and Rebecca Blakely both of Laurens, SC,  2 grandchidren, 3 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild.

Edward “Cowboy Eddie” Albert Duncan, Jr.

Edward “Cowboy Eddie” Albert Duncan, Jr. of 2579 Beaverdam Church Road passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at his home.

 Born in Bay, AR he was a son of the late Eddie and Lavanie Petigo Duncan. A U.S. Army veteran having served two tours in Vietnam, Eddie was of the Pentecostal faith. He led a full and interesting life that including various jobs such as being a mechanic, a soil analyst, drilling wells, and working in a sawmill. He enjoyed dirt track racing and will be loved and missed by his family and friends.

 Surviving are his son: Eddie Duncan, III. of Ironton, OH; a brother and his family who cared for Eddie the last eight years, Harry (Edna) Duncan of Mountville; sisters, Wanda (Russ) Reckman of Kansas City, MO, Linda (Doug) Baldwin of Cordova, Kathyren (Luis) Mendoza of Sacramento, CA, Christina (Chris) Dell of Poplar Bluff, MO and Kimberly (Shawn) Wells of Pascola, MO; five grandchildren, two great granddaughters; a special niece Candace Moody of Mountville and her children, Elizabeth and Johnathon Moody both of Mountville, other numerous nieces and nephews; and an ex-wife and dear friend, Betty Goins Fultz of South Point, OH.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Michael Duncan; brothers, William, James and Sammy Duncan; and sisters, Sherry Cox and Brenda Duncan.

A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM Thursday, March 27, 2014, at Beaverdam Baptist Church conducted by Rev. Phil Bryson with Military Honors.

Mr. Richard “Rick “Westfield, age 62, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014 in Silver Springs Maryland.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy Westfield of the home; two daughters; four brothers; one sister and one grandchild.
