Mrs. Lula Mae Henderson

Mrs. Lula Mae Henderson, age 87, of 302 Highway 651, Fountain Inn, died Saturday, March 22, 2014 at the Hillcrest Hospital.

A daughter of the late John Clinkscale and the late Cora Mahaffey Clinkscale, and the wife of the late John Henderson.  She was a devoted homemaker and a member of Golden View Baptist Church.  

She is survived by four sons, Steven Henderson of Simpsonville, Standley Henderson, Willie James Henderson both of Mauldin and Kenneth Henderson of Simpsonville; one daughter, Brenda Henderson of Fountain Inn; one brother, John Clinkscale of Columbia, and one sister Irene Webb of Simpsonville. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m, Friday, March 28, 2014 at the Golden View Baptist Church Cemetery, with Dr. W.R. Davis and Rev. Antwian Henderson officiating.  There will be no public viewing.  The family is at the home.

Mrs. Talitha “Cumi” Putman McIver

Mrs. Talitha “Cumi” Putman McIver, formerly of Fountain Inn, died Thursday, March 10, 2014 at the Albert Einstein Hospital, Bronx, New York.

She was born a daughter of the late McDaniel Putman and the late Blanche Sullivan Putman, and the wife of Thomas McIver. A graduate of the Old Fountain Inn Negro High School and furthering her education she later graduated from Benedict College and Morris College. She was a retired school teacher. 

She is survived by her husband, Thomas McIver of the home; two sons, Ronald Putman of Greenville, SC and Warren Tony McIver of Bronx, NY; one sister-in-law, Bernice Putman of Fountain Inn. Ray Anthony Fuller

Ray Anthony Fuller, 58 of 109 Winterhaven Road, died March 21, 2014. He was the son of the late Arthur Hunter and Aliean Fuller Gault.

Survivors include one daughter, Shana Richardson of Spartanburg, SC; four sisters, Regina Nash and Robin (George) Williams both of Spartanburg, SC, Carolyn Alexander and Rosa (DeGrant) Stevenson both of Woodruff, SC; six brothers, James (Tammy) Gault of Owings Mills, Maryland, Calvin (Shirley) Hunter and Thomas (Renee) Hunter both of Spartanburg, SC, Melvin, Terry and Jerry (Mellisa) Hunter all of Woodruff, SC. Five grandchildren and one great grandchildren.

Margaret Howle Hornsby

Margaret Howle Hornsby, 66, of 109 Earl Street passed away Saturday, March 22, 2014, at her home.

Born in Laurens, she was a daughter of the late Joseph Adolphus and Doris Elizabeth Bell Hornsby. Ms. Hornsby was formerly employed with Self Regional Hospital and Laurens Family Practice, a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, and the Homemaker Sunday School Class.

Surviving is her sister Jane Hornsby of the home. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her brother Joe Airail Hornsby.

Graveside services will be 11:00 AM Wednesday, March 26, 2014, at Forest Lawn Cemetery, conducted by Rev. Kevin Walker and Rev. Tom Faucette.

The family will be at the home and will receive friends at The Kennedy Mortuary on Tuesday, March 25, 2014, from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.

Ms. Betty Thompson

Ms. Betty Thompson, 83 was born September 16, 1930 to the late Walter Swindler and Emma Lois Craig in Baltimore, Maryland.

She was a long time member of St. Paul First Baptist Church in Laurens, SC and was also a part of VFW #5208 organization, “Soul Sisters” organization and the “Los Migas” social club.

On Thursday, March 20, 2014 the Lord called Ms. Betty Thompson home, she passed away at the Hospice House of Laurens County in Clinton, SC.

She is survived by three sons; Russell Thompson, Michael Thompson and Ricky Thompson, three daughters; Donna Suber, Carolyn Thompson and Katherine Thompson, 7 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services for Ms. Betty Thompson will be held Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at St. Paul First Baptist Church in Laurens, SC at 2:00 P.M.

Rev. Sammie Stroud will be the officiating minister.

Rev. Larry Chapman will be presiding.

A public viewing will be held Monday, March 24, 2014 at 10:00 A.M. until 9:00 P.M. at Goins Funeral Home, Inc.

Emogene Jones Little

Emogene Jones Little, 87, of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community and formerly of 1405 Stagecoach Rd. passed away Friday, March 21, 2014.

Born in Plevna, Madison Co. AL, she was the daughter of the late Larkin Hartwell and Alta Estelle Walker Jones.  Mrs. Little was retired from the family-owned business, Agricultural Manufacturing & Textiles, Inc. in Laurens, where she was the Secretary-Treasurer.

She is survived by:  a son, Mike Little and wife Susan; a daughter, Pat Little Adamson and special friend Vic MacDonald, all of Laurens; a brother, Joe Jones and wife Edna of Tampa, FL; grandchildren, Craig Little and wife Cathy, Ben Little and wife Leigh, and Laura Little Taylor and husband Reid, all of Laurens; great grandchildren, Canady, McKenzie, Kelsie, Wyatt, and Walker; her special friend and caregiver, Hattie Mae Franklin of Laurens; and a close friend, Maria Beckner and family.

In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Charles Dewey Little, an infant son, Frank Little and a brother, Bill Jones.

Graveside services will be held at 3:00 pm, Sunday, March 23, 2014, at Westview Memorial Park, conducted by Rev. Adair Rogers and Rev. Rickey Letson.

The family will be at the home of her son, 1432 Stagecoach Rd., Laurens, SC 29360, and will receive friends at the graveside immediately following the service.

Mr. Oscar Shaw, age 52, of 302 Alder Drive, Simpsonville, SC, died Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at his home. 

A son of Cora Shaw Wharton and the late Minister Henry Berry, Jr., he was a member of the Center Rabun Baptist Church a retired employee of Dow Brands.  He is survived by one son, Nicholas Shaw of the home; three daughters, Kionna Shaw of Mauldin, Quinn Shaw and SaQuinta Shaw; his mother, Cora Wharton of Simpsonville, SC; one brother, Reverend Sebastian Berry of Detroit, MI; one sister, Denise Valerie Chatman of Greenville, SC and one grandchild. 

Funeral service will be held 2pm, Tuesday, March 25, 2014 at the Center Rabun Baptist Church, Gray Court, with Rev. Albert Blandin officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Mrs. Clara N. Strong, age 83, of 368 Westcliff Drive, Laurens, formerly of Charleston, died Tuesday, March 18, 2014 in the Laurens County Hospital, Clinton, SC. 

Born in Holly Hill, SC, she was a daughter of the late Willie Bracker and Mabel Thompson Bracker and wife of the late Melvin E. Strong.  She is survived by five daughters, Benestine German , Melvina (James) Hamilton, Patricia Strong, Alfreda Strong of Charleston, SC and Rosemary (Sherman) Rhodes of Laurens, SC; one stepson, Melvin E. Strong, Jr. of Douglasville, GA; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-five great grandchildren; four great, great grandchildren and a special cousin, Arlene Brown of Columbia, SC. 

A public viewing of the body will be held Sunday, March 23, 2014 from 6-8 p.m.. at the North Area Funeral Home. Funeral service will be held 11:00a.m., Monday, March 24, 2014 at the New Bethel R. E. Church 1941 Helm Ave, North Charleston with Bishop William White officiating. Burial will be in the Beaufort National Cemetery, Beaufort, SC. Delores Harrod Watkins

Delores Harrod Watkins succumbed on Wednesday, March 19, 2014, as a result of an accident on Tuesday, March 11, 2014.

Born in Norman Park, GA, November 18, 1939, she was a daughter of the late Sidney Elton and Myrtis Baker Harrod.  She was married for over 51 years to her husband James “Jim” Watkins.  She was a military wife and was by her husband’s side for over 30 years of military service in the Air Force and US Army.  A retired beautician, she was a member of Pleasant Grove Baptist Church.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by:  her precious children, Richard Elton Watkins and wife Lisa of Warrior, AL, Dee Ann W. Wood and husband Keith of Gray Court, and Patrice W. Parker and husband Robert of Hoover, AL;  grandchildren, Sydney W. McGhee (Chase), Brynn E. Parker, and Avery K. Wood.  Brothers, Donald W. Harrod and wife Carolyn and Stanley Harrod and wife Becky all of Norman Park, GA; and sister Brenda LeFevre of Montgomery, AL.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Saturday, March 22, 2014, at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, conducted by Rev. Phil Whitt with burial in Shiloh United Methodist Church Cemetery (36 Shiloh Church Road, Gray Court, SC).

Harriett Pinson Hall

Harriett Pinson Hall, 82, of 333 Brewington Rd. and wife of the late Albert Lee Hall, passed away Tuesday, March 18, 2014, at her home.

Born in Laurens County, she was a daughter of the late Clarence “Young” and Genevieve Jones Pinson.   A homemaker, she was a faithful member of Bethel Baptist Church where she sang in the choir.

She is survived by:  her sons, Ronnie Hall and wife Linda of Laurens, and Chet Hall of the home; daughter-in-law Faith Ann Hall of Texas; brothers William Pinson and wife Betty of Laurens and Edward Pinson and wife Alva of Laurens; sisters, Eleanor P. Cooper and husband Fowler, Brenda P. Martin and husband Ellis, Carolyn P.. Sprouse and husband Kenneth, and Sandra P. Tumblin and husband Grover all of Laurens; grandchildren, Jonathan Hall, Nathaniel Hall, Michael Hall, Nicole Hall, and Amanda Hall; 14 great grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a son, Albert “Ted” Hall; brothers, Henry Earl Pinson and Oliver Pinson; and a grandson, Michael Ted Hall.

Graveside services will be held at 4:00 pm, Thursday, March 20, 2014, at Bethel Baptist Church Cemetery, conducted by Rev. James K. Hamilton and Rev. Tim Pigg.

Mr. Robert Sullivan, age 62, of 816 S. Garrison Road, Simpsonville, died Thursday, March 13, 2014 at his home. 

A son of the late Walter Sullivan, Sr. and Verneller Franks Sullivan, he was a former employee of the Carolina Springs Golf Course.  He is survived by one daughter, Shundra Sullivan of Columbia, SC; one step-daughter, Angela Young of Columbia, SC; three brothers, J.C. Sullivan of Greer, SC, L..V. Sullivan and John L. Sullivan of Simpsonville, SC; one sister, Willie Ruth Wilson of Simpsonville, SC and two grandchildren.

Robert Ray Bell

Robert Ray Bell, 87, of 2759 Bellview Church Rd. and husband of Doris Brown Bell, passed away at his home on Monday, March 10, 2014.

Born in Laurens, he was a son of the late William Holmes Bell, Sr. and Aileene Ledford Bell.  Retired from Laurens Glass, he was a member of Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church where he was an Elder Emeritus.

Mr. Bell was the Founder of the Robert R. Bell Center of the Blind, where he served as Director for 38 years.  He was the organizer and past President of the Laurens County National Federation of the Blind, Past President of the SC National Federation of the Blind, SC Commission of the Blind Board Member, Director and Chairman of the Board for 20 years of the Rocky Bottom Camp of the Blind, and Co-director of the Family Court Cottage.

Among the many awards for his devoted community service are:  The SC Order of the Palmetto, Citizen of the year in Laurens County, Volunteer of the Year in Laurens County, the Key to the City of Laurens, and Mayoral Awards from the mayors of both Laurens and Clinton.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by: his sons, Robbie Bell and wife Beth of Laurens and Mark Bell and wife Wanda of Laurens; grandchildren, Rebecca Bell, Linsey Bell, Austin Bell (Lourdes), Mary Bell Willard (Andy), Joseph Bell, and Elizabeth Bell; and great grandchild, Temperance.

In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by brothers, William Bell, Jr., James Bell, and Joseph Bell.

Funeral services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, March 13, 2014, at Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church, conducted by Rev. Deidra Crosby with burial in Rocky Springs Presbyterian Church Cemetery.

Martha “Virginia” Mahon

Martha “Virginia” Mahon, 95, longtime resident of Martha Franks Baptist Retirement Community, passed away Saturday, March 8, 2014.

 Born in Laurens, she was the daughter of the late Duff Sloan and Rucia Wolff Mahon.  Retired from the SC Regional Housing Authority, Miss Mahon was a member of First Baptist Church for 64 years where she taught Sunday School and was a faithful member of the W.M.U.

She is survived by a sister-in-law, Susan Hall Mahon of Laurens; nephews, John Hugh Mahon, Jr. and wife Christi of Seattle, WA, and Duff Sloan Mahon of Laurens; nieces, Nancy Loveday Smith and husband David of Rome, GA, Jean Loveday of Atlanta, GA, and Rucia Mahon Wilson and husband Ralph of Laurens; numerous great nieces and nephews; and one great-great niece.

In addition to her parents, she was pre-deceased by a brother, John Hugh Mahon, Sr. and sister Mary Mahon Loveday.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 am, Tuesday, March 11, 2014, at Martha Franks Rasor Chapel, conducted by Dr. Russell Dean and Rev. Rickey Letson. A private burial service will be held at Rabun Creek Baptist Church Cemetery.

Frances “Louise” Durham Kuykendall, 83, formerly of Laurelwood Apts. and wife of the late Loyal Fulton Kuykendall, passed away Wednesday, March 5, 2014, a National Healthcare Center in Laurens.

Born in Greensboro, NC, she was a daughter of the late Thomas Benton and Louise Frances Dalton Durham.  Retired from Union Carbide, Mrs. Kuykendall was a member of Bellview Baptist Church and was a devoted mother, grandmother, and great grandmother..

She is survived by her sons, Rev. Duane Kuykendall and wife Debbie of Hickory, NC, and Fulton Kuykendall and wife Sheila of Laurens; a brother, Tommy Durham and wife Marguerite of Savannah, GA; sisters, Margaret Gambrell of Memphis, TN, and Amelia Childers and husband Wilt of Laurens; grandchildren, Jason Kuykendall (Mimi), Chris Kuykendall (Allison), Elizabeth K. Coulston (Justin), Ashley Kuykendall, Savannah Kuydendall, and Taylor Kuykendall;  great grandchildren, Jayden Coulston, Lindley Beckett, Lila Kate Kuykendall, and Addison Harper Hazel; and her roommate at NHC, Ruby Cobb of Woodruff.

In addition to her husband and parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Ida Nell Noble.
