NC would not threaten to score the entire game as White would not allow a runner past 1st on the only 2 hits he allowed through 3 complete innings.

Wednesday, 8-12-15

Clinton All-Stars World Series run comes and end with a 12-11 loss to Alabama Team SC/Clinton All-Stars ended their All-Star season Wednesday night in Lexington, SC with a tough loss to Alabama 12-11. Alabama used 3 home runs to score 8 total runs to eliminate SC from the AAA World Series. The top of the 1st saw Alabama push 3 across fueled by a 2 out 2 run home run, but the All-Stars would strike back with 7 of their own to take a 7-3 lead.. A Wil Stewart single and consecutive walks to Zach Fortman and Austin Copeland loaded the bases. Stewart scored on a wild pitch. Luke White doubled to right center scoring Fortman. Zane Mclendon drew a walk. Copeland, White and Mclendon all eventually scored on wild pitches advancing the runners. RT Corley then reached base on an error, Jy Leake walked. Corley and Wages would eventually come around and score on an Alabama error and passed ball. Alabama scored 3 in the top of the 2nd this time with a 2 out 3 run home run cutting the All-Stars lead to 7-6. Clinton answered with 2 runs of their own in the bottom of the inning. Justin Copeland drew a leadoff walk and Wil Stewart reached on a hit by pitch putting runners at 1st and 2nd. Zach Fortman singled and Copeland would score on a passed ball. Luke White grounded into a fielder’s choice plating Stewart for Clinton’s last run of the inning increasing their lead to 9-6. Neither team would score in the 3rd inning. Alabama scored their final 6 runs of the game in the top of the 4th that started with a 1 out 3 run home run and three uncharacteristic errors by the Clinton defense pushing Alabama’s lead to 12-9. The All-Stars rallied in the bottom of the inning scoring 2 of their own. With 2 outs White and Mclendon drew walks and advanced on a passed ball. White scored on a wild pitch. Corley singled home Mclendon for Clinton’s last run of the game bringing the score to 12-11. Stewart would strike out the side on 10 pitches in Alabama’s half of the 5th.. In the bottom of the inning Clinton would get singles from Stewart and Austin Copeland but neither would score. Both teams went in order in the 6th ending Clinton’s World Series run by the score of 12-11. Head Coach Matt Stewart commented afterwards: “This one definitely hurts, felt like we were the better team tonight. We just couldn’t hold a lead. Give Alabama credit, they hit well when it mattered, 3 home runs accounted for 8 total runs, if it wasn’t for that it’s not even close . Just wasn’t meant to be I guess. What a great run these guys had to finish 3rd out of over 4000 All-star teams that began. Nothing to hang our heads about. For some in this group, it’s the 2nd state championship they have won in 3 years and a runner up last year. Wow! These guys are special. I told them don’t dwell on this loss but to look around and remember where baseball has brought us and the memories we have made. We had a checklist when we started of things we wanted to accomplish. Sub district in Abbeville(check), district in Iva(check), state in Clemson(check), and World Series in Lexington(3rd place). Didn’t quite get the last one checked off but a great job nonetheless. It’s been a pleasure to represent Clinton and South Carolina!”

In the inning Clinton was led at the plate by singles from Wilson Wages, Jy Leake, Austin Copeland and doubles from Justin Copeland and Wil Stewart. Head Coach Matt Stewart: “Very proud of our guys tonight! They responded extremely well after a close defeat by Delmae and beat an excellent Lancaster team to survive and play again tomorrow. We lost the bye so we need to come out tomorrow morning ready play. We get another crack at Delmae for the right to play for the State Championship. What more motivation do we need?” With only 3 teams left in the tournament, next game would see Hartsville defeat Delmae setting up a 3 way tie with each team having just 1 loss. To break the tie each team would draw for the bye into the championship game Thursday at 2pm. Hartsville drew the bye putting Clinton in the 10am game Thursday morning against Delmae.

Thursday 7-23-15: Clinton 8 – Delmae 5

Clinton 9-10 All-stars defeat Delmae 8-5 Thursday morning in Clemson earning the right to play for the Dixie Youth AAA Sate Championship. The All-stars eliminated 2-time defending state champion Delmae from the Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament Thursday morning setting up a winner take all state championship game against Hartsville at 2pm. Wil Stewart turned in another outstanding pitching performance on the mound for the All-stars as he picked up his 2nd win of the tournament going 6 complete innings. Backed up by Zach Fortman’s 3 doubles and 3 RBIs at the plate, Stewart would hold Delmae scoreless for 4 innings until giving up 2 in the 5th and 3 in the 6th. Once again strong pitching and defense would carry the All-stars into the State Championship game. As the visiting team, the All-stars once again would strike quickly putting 2 runs on the board. Justin Copeland once again came through in the leadoff spot with a single up the middle. 1 out later Fortman doubled scoring Copeland. Austin Copeland would drive in Fortman on a double to left field giving Clinton a 2-0 lead. A double from Zane Mclendon and a single from Wilson Wages scored the All-stars only run of the 2nd increasing the lead to 3-0. 3 runs by the All-stars in the top of the 3rd would give them a 6-0 lead. Carson Glenn and Justin Copeland each singled to start the inning. A fielder’s choice off the bat of RT Corley resulted in a double play by Delmae putting out Glenn and Copeland. With 2 outs, Fortman would drive his 2nd double of the game to the fence plating Corley. Austin Copeland drew a walk and both runners advanced to 2nd and 3rd on a wild pitch. Fortman scored on another wild pitch. A Wil Stewart single would score Austin Copeland rounding out the scoring. Clinton would score its 7th run in the top of the 5th as Justin Copeland walked and with 2 outs Fortman smacked his 3rd double of the game scoring Copeland. Delmae would their 1st 2 runs of the game in the bottom of the 5th off 2 singles cutting the All-stars lead to 7-2. Clinton would get 1 run in the top of the 6th. With 1 out, Luke White reached 1st on an error and eventually come all the way around and scored on consecutive throwing errors by Delmae. With Clinton leading 8-2 in the bottom of the 6th Delmae would not go quietly mounting a valiant comeback by scoring 3 runs and cutting the All-stars lead to 8-5, Fortman would end the game on a double play with runners on 1st and 3rd eliminating Delmae from the tournament and sending Clinton into the 2pm match up with Hartsville for the state championship. Head Coach Matt Stewart: “Our guys responded this morning! Delmae has had our number recently, lost by 1 in last years final and by 1 this year. They’re a great team and the defending champions. Can’t say enough about the job Wil Stewart did on the mound, do or die game and pressure does seem to bother him at all. He always wants the ball and truly believes he can win every game, so proud of him! Also Zach Fortman behind the plate with 3 doubles and 2 of those with two outs, and the game ending double play, Wow! He came through when we needed it. Those 2 guys have been leaders for us all season. We now have the chance to accomplish our goal of being state champs, it’s up to us!”

Thursday 7-23-15: Clinton 7 – Hartsville 1

STATE CHAMPS!!!! Clinton 9-10 All-stars win Dixie Youth AAA State Tournament Championship at Nettles Park in Clemson Thursday afternoon defeating Hartsville 7-1. A dominating pitching performance by Zach Fortman and a Zane Mclendon 2 run home run powered the All-stars past Hartsville giving the Clinton YMCA All-star team their 2nd State Championship in 3 years. Clinton won the 7-8 AA state championship in 2013, finished runners up in 2014 to go along with this years title. The home team All-stars scored all their runs in the 1st and 2nd innings and it proved to be more than enough as Fortman would face the minimum in 4 of the 6 innings he pitched allowing only 3 hits, 1 earned run along with 7 strike outs. The bottom of the 1st saw the All-stars plate 6 runs. Justin Copeland led off as he always seems to do with a single to get things started. A fielder’s choice off the bat of RT Corley would put Copeland out at 2nd. Fortman draws a walk putting runners at 1st and 2nd. With 2 outs Wil Stewart steps up and delivers an rbi single scoring Corley advancing Fortman to 3rd and Stewart takes 2nd on the throw home. Fortman would score on a wild pitch. Stewart would advance to 3rd and also score on a Hartsville wild pitch plating Clinton’s 3rd run of the inning. Luke White next draws a walk and would promptly score as Zane Mclendon drove a dagger in the hearts of Hartsville fans by sending a 2-1 pitch over the right field fence for a 2 run home run and a Clinton 5-0 lead. The All-stars were not done as Wilson Wages draws a walk and score as Jy Leake doubled to right field rounding out the scoring and giving Clinton a 6-0 lead after 1 inning. Fortman and the Clinton defense would put Hartsville away easily through the 1st 5 innings as they would only face 1 over the minimum in that stretch. The All-stars would score their final run of the game in the bottom of the 2nd. Bryce Young started the inning being hit by a pitch and 2 consecutive singles by Justin Copeland and Corley would move Young to 3rd. Young quickly scored on a Hartsville wild pitch giving the All-stars a commanding 7-0 lead after 2 complete. Neither team would threaten in innings 3,4, and 5. Hartsville scored their only run in the top of the 6th on 2 singles. Fortman would fittingly end the threat and the game striking out the last batter he faced giving the All-stars the AAA State Championship. Head Coach Matt Stewart: “Wow!! This team continues to accomplish some amazing things, we have won a 2nd State Championship in 3 years and finished 2nd last year! Zach Fortman once again came through absolutely dominating Hartsville on the mound, 7 strike outs, 3 hits, makes the game a lot easier. Our defense once again proved to be outstanding and really was the difference in the tournament for us. When you get that kind of pitching and defense you always have a chance to win. Zane Mclendon’s home run was special, 1st one he’s hit and really seemed to completely deflate Hartsville. These players, my assistant coaches Brian Fortman, Josh Mclendon, the parents and all of our supporters worked extremely hard for this; they deserve and earned it. But there is one person I can’t thank enough, my wife Tammy. She works tirelessly behind the scenes for hours for me and these kids and it often goes unnoticed. Not this time: Thank you Tammy for all you do! This one’s for you!” With the win the All-stars become the team from South Carolina advancing the World Series held in Lexington to play Florida, last year’s winner, at 3:30pm on August 8 at the Lexington Ballpark Road Complex.
