Good luck to the Laurens team!!!
  • Midlands Captures O-Zone State Championship… Yesterday I reported to you that the Midlands team had eliminated the Clinton O-Zone All-Star team from state tournament play on Wednesday night… The Clinton team should not hang their heads over that loss as they did a great job coming back in the losers’ bracket and finishing third in the state losing to the team that would win the state championship… Yesterday Midlands won the state championship defeating a team from Hartsville by a score of 10-0… Midlands went undefeated in the tournament and hit a state record of 23 homeruns in tournament action…. Clinton as I said had nothing to be ashamed of the lost to a pretty good team.

  • Fund Raising for Clinton 11-12 O-Zone All-Star Team… The Clinton YMCA 11-12 O-Zone All-Star team will be heading to the state tournament in Sumter which starts this Friday… It goes without saying that these trips do cost a significant amount of money to feed and house the team members, coaches and chaperones… Tonight at Zaxby’s in Laurens between the hours of 5-8 pm Zaxby’s will donate 10% of the sales to the team… If you are planning on eating out Tuesday why don’t you make plans to do it at Zaxby’s… Of course the team will be accepting donations at each of these events.
  • Laurens L.L. 10-11 All-Stars Fall to Greenville… The Laurens Little League 10-11 All-Star team had won 2 games in a row by a score of 12-11 on some last inning heroics in the first two games of the state tournament down in Irmo… Last night in the championship game they faced off against a team from Greenville which they had defeated on Saturday… Unlike the first time the two teams played, there were no late inning comebacks in the cards last night as Greenville took a 13-3 win in five innings setting up a winner take all game tonight… Laurens scored first in the top of the first inning on a solo homer by Griffin Abell… Abell then took to the mound and unfortunately Greenville got 2 runs off him in the bottom of the first… Laurens tied the game with a single run in the top of the second… Greenville then answered with 4 in the bottom of the second and never trailed again… Laurens did manage another run in the fourth but Greenville answered with 3 in the bottom of the inning and then added 4 in the fifth to end the game on the 10-run lead rule… Laurens scored their 3 runs on 7 hits with Abell being the only Laurens player to get more than one hit going 2-3 with the homer… Greenville picked up their 13 runs on 9 hits including one homer but was aided by 3 Laurens errors… After the game Coach Wayne French commented that his team hit the ball hard more times than not but it always seemed to end up in a Greenville glove while Greenville hit the ball to the gaps… Click on the following to see the box score of the game: Laurens LL 11-U 7-11-16  ….. The championship game will start at 6 pm tonight at Friars Gate Park in Irmo.
  • Weather Suspends Laurens Minors Game… The Laurens Minors team is undefeated in their state championship tournament and was supposed to play Northwood Blue last night up in Taylors… Well they did get the game started but some of the hit and miss thunderstorms did not miss them as the game was suspended with the score 0-0 in the bottom of the second inning due to weather… They will resume the game at 6 pm tonight… Good luck to the team!
  • Clinton and Laurens at PC Today… If memory serves me correctly, both the Red Devils and the Raiders will be over at PC most all today participating in 7 on 7 passing contest… Might want to go check it out if you get a chance.

Sports Report for Monday, 7-11-2016

Local Notes: Laurens Little League had two different all-star teams in action over the weekend in state tournament action so let’s catch up with them.

  • 9-10 Minors… Coach Jason Pridgen and the 9-10 Minor All-star squad keep rolling right along as they have yet to score less than 13 runs in any of the games they have played and that is exactly how many they scored in their Saturday game with Carolina Forest which they won by a score of 13-5… The teams played just about evenly through the first 4 innings as Laurens held a 6-5 lead… As it the first game on Thursday night, walks continued to be the biggest problem for the Laurens pitching staff as they often led to bases loaded situations and runs… Laurens broke the game open in the 5th inning when put 7 runs on the board and went on to the win… Owen Pridgen and Bennett Edwards were both cited by Coach Pridgen as having good games at the plate with Pridgen going 2-4 with a double and an inside-the-park homer… The team will be back in action tonight at 8pm as they take on Northwood Blue at 8pm on Field 3 at Corey Burns Park up in Taylors.
  • 10-11 All-StarsThur. / Fr.: Laurens 12 – Northwood 11… Now as you may recall I mentioned on Friday’s Sports report that the Laurens Little League 10-11 All-Stars started a game down in Irmo against Northwood but the game had to be suspended due to lightning in the area with Northwood leading 9-4… well good news here as Laurens came back to a 12-11 win Friday morning… Laurens trailed 11-8 going into the bottom of the last inning (sixth) when they scored 4 runs to get the win with Alex Laws having a walk-off double to driving in the 2 winning runs… Griffin Abell went 3-4 with a homer for the team… Click on the following to see more stats on the game:  Laurens LL 11-U 7-8-16
  • Saturday: Laurens 12 – Greenville 11… The team was back in action on Saturday as they faced off against a team from Greenville… Right off the bat I will tell you that they took another 12-11 win as they did on Friday and once again they scored the winning runs in the 6th inning… They trailed 11-7 going into the top of the 6th inning when they put 1 run on the board to make it 11-8… Then with the bases loaded and 2 outs and a 1-2 count Bubba Simmerman parked one over the fence for a grand-slam homerun to drive in what would prove to be the winning runs… In the bottom of the 7th Greenville threatened as they had the bases loaded with 2 outs as the runner at third was forced out after the batter hit a ground ball…. Griffin Abell and Alex laws both went 3-4 to lead the team at the plate… For more stats on the game, click on the following: Laurens LL 11-U 7-9-16… The team will be back in action tonight at 6 pm as they once again play Greenville who defeated Northwood yesterday to earn a spot in tonight’s championship game… If Laurens wins tonight, they are the champs.. If Greenville wins it will force a winner-take-all game tomorrow… Good luck to both Laurens teams tonight!

Pro Sports

  • Braves 4 – Mets 3… One night after having their 6-game winning streak broken, the Braves hopefully started another last night as they took a come-from-behind 4-3 win over the Mets in Atlanta… Atlanta trailed 3-2 going into the bottom of the 8th inning when the Braves third baseman Adonis Garcia had a 2-run homer that would prove to provide the winning runs… For more information on this game, click here…. EDITORIAL… Those who really know me know that I spent 3 decades umpiring various levels of baseball and softball at various levels including high school and some college softball… I spent over half that time officiating basketball so I am very reluctant to voice criticism or cast doubt on sports officials… Last night in my humble opinion the Braves tied the game 3-3 in the bottom of the 7th inning on a bang-bang play at home plate that that the umps missed even when reviewed by MLB in New York… I have 3 points of contention on the play… 1: The home plate ump was in foul territory on the first base side of the pate and not the third base side where his view would not have been blocked by the catcher… He had to look over and around the catcher to see the play develop…. 2: The catcher blocked the plate without the ball and did not leave the runner a path to the plate… That is a no-no… 3: Again in my humble opinion, the replays clearly show the runner contacting the catchers shin guards which were on the edge of the plate and pushed them back enough to make contact with the plate BEFORE the catcher applied the tag to the upper chest area of the runner… The plate ump had to guess where the tag was applied due to poor position… In New York MLB replay officials (umps and former umps I do believe) seeing this still did not overturn the bum call… They seem reluctant to change any calls at home plate that will affect the score of the game… On the bases no problem, they overturn when warranted… Hope we don’t have this situation in game 7 of the World Series… Hats off to Braves manager Brian Snitker for standing up for his team after the call and getting ejected… He still has a long way to go to catch up with former manager Bobby Cox’s 158 regular season ejections… I do miss Bobby sometimes.
  • Lakewood 8 – Drive 7 (10)… The Greenville Drive returned to action last night after the all-star break and opened the second half of the season on a sour note as they lost to the Lakewood Blue Claws by a score of 8-7 in 10 innings last night up at Flour Field… The Drive trailed 7-5 going into the bottom of the 9th inning when they rallied to tie the game at 7 – 7 and send the game into extra innings… The Blue Claws had a solo homer in the top of the 10th that proved to be the winning run…. Click here for more information on this game… The same two teams will continue their series in Greenville over the weekend.

Countdown to Kickoff… Well its only 63 days until Laurens and Clinton open their football season as the Raiders travel to Clinton to take on the Red Devils in the opening game of the season for both teams on August 26th… Now PC fans have to wait until Sept 1st which is 69 days away for the Blue Hose to open their season on the road at Central Michigan and 92 days (Sept. 24th) for the home opener with Florida Tech
