After being rained out last Saturday, the Clinton Red Devils and the Hanahan Hawks finally were able to get together late yesterday afternoon down at the Cayce Tennis Center to determine the State AAA Champion… The Red Devils knew that the Hawks were a tough team for several reasons… One is that they are the defending champions in Class AAA … Two, they went undefeated this season and three several of their team members either won or placed in the top five of the singles tournament… Well once the matches started it was evident that the Hawks were “the real deal” as they took a 6-0 win over the Red Devils to claim their second state championship in as many years… The Red Devils competed well and never gave up but Hanahan was just a little better in all aspects of the game… The closest the Red Devils came to picking up a win was in the #2 doubles match where Zack Bedenbaugh and Anders Orr lost the first set 6-3 but rebounded to take the second set 6-4 then lost the tie-breaker 10-6… Coach Simmons expressed pride in the team after the match and said net season starts today and the future looks bright for the Red Devils as they only lose Robert Powell to graduation… By the way, Hanahan’s future also looks bright as they had no seniors… Congratulations to the Red Devils and Coach Simmons on an outstanding season! LDHS:

  • Softball: Byrnes 3 – Laurens 0… The Laurens Raider softball team traveled up to Byrnes HS yesterday knowing they would have to defeat a traditionally tough opponent twice in one night if they wanted to continue their run in the playoffs… They were also hoping to avenge a 2-1 win the Rebels last Saturday where errors helped the Rebels score both their runs… The first inning for the Raiders proved to be a hint of what was to come as the Raiders managed only one hit in their half of the inning and when the Rebels came to bat the leadoff batter reached on an error and eventually came around to score the first run of the game and then the Rebels went on to take a 3-0 win ending the Raiders season… The Rebels also scored a single run in the third inning with two out as the Raider outfielder had the third out in her glove and let if fall out resulting in an error that gave the Rebels their second run… Meanwhile the Rebel pitcher Kasey Widmyer gave up only one other hit after Gibbs initial hit while striking out 4 and walking just 1… The Rebels scored their final earned run in the 4th inning and the Raiders committed 5 errors on the night… For the game’s box score and stats click on the following: 17-5-3-SB-PO-Byrnes… For the game’s scorecard click on the following: 17-5-3-SB-PO-Byrnes-scorebook… The Raiders finish the season with an overall record of 18-10 and finished first in the region with an 8-2 record… This marks the fourth consecutive year the Raiders claimed their region crown… It also marked the end of the line for Coach Butch Clark as he announced before the start of the season that this would be his last as he was retiring to enjoy his grandkids and get started on that 32 year-long “Honey-Do” that his wife has for him… After the game I asked her if she was going to make him start on that tomorrow and she said she might give him a week off before he has to get started… Congratulations, thanks and best wishes to Coach Clark.
