Sports Report for Monday, 9-11-2017

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Red Devils Pick Up First Win… The Clinton Red Devils picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Aiken Green Hornets 47-33 at Wilder Stadium last Friday night mainly because they were much “Wiser” than Aiken… Of course by “Wiser” I mean Mark Wise who had 255 net yds. and scored 5 TDs on the night in a game was not as close as the score sounded… The Red Devil defense set up the first score as Jerimiah Boyd intercepted Aiken’s first play from scrimmage to give the Red Devils the ball at the Aiken 26 yd. line and 3 plays later Wise picked up the first of his 5 TDs on the night on a 9 yd. run… Wise’s other TD runs were of 13, 56, 45 and 2 yds…. Kris Holmes and Darien Bailey had the other TDs for the Red Devils… Aiken scored 2 of their TDs in the last couple of minutes in the game when the outcome was no longer in doubt… For stats on the game, click on the following: CHS+vs+AHS+Quick … For a play by play narrative of the game click on the following: CHS+vs+AHS+Play+by+Play  …   The Red Devils travel to Aiken next Friday to take on the Panthers.

LDHS:

  • Irmo Scores in Last Minute to Defeat Raiders… The Irmo Yellow Jackets scored with 48 seconds in the contest to take a 28-21 win over the Laurens Raiders in a game that Irmo just made one more big play than the Raiders did in a back and forth game… A lot of folks had wondered how the Raiders would play after the spanking they received at Chapman the week before… They played well enough to tie the game twice and actually take the lead 14-7 early in the third quarter… The Irmo defense was geared to stop the run and Troy Dendy as evidenced that the Raiders had only 58 net yards rushing and Dendy was held to just 77 yards with 2 TDs… Ryan Campbell responded leading the Raider passing attack to get 213 yards as he went 20 of 37 with 1 interception and 1 TD a 47 yd. strike to Dendy… Aaron McCloud led all receivers with 7 catches… Duane Martin was named the Town of Gray Court player of the game by WLBG as he seemed to be all over the field on defense. .. For the complete stat package on the game, click on the following: Laurens+at+Irmo+Game+Packet… The Raiders host Boiling Springs this Friday night at KC Hanna Stadium.

Laurens Academy:

  • Laurens Academy Falls to the Confederates… The Laurens Academy Crusaders were on the road last Friday night taking on the Confederates of Andrew Jackson… The final score was AJ 44 and LA 18 with all the scoring coming in the first half… The Crusaders relied on their passing attack to generate their offense as the ground game was only able to garner 20 yards while Thomas Lowery went 8-18 throwing for 221 yards and 3TDs all to Will Tindal… On defense Kenny Langston had 11 tackles to lead the Crusaders while Cal Robertson caused a fumble and Joshua Moore recovered it… The Crusaders return home to Todd Kirk Field this Friday to host Cathedral on Grandparents Day.

Ware Shoals

  • Hornets Pick Up First Win of Season… The Ware Shoals Hornets picked up their first win of the season last Friday night at Tommy Davis Field as they defeated Great Falls 20-6… The Hornets jumped out to an early lead scoring 2 TDs in the first quarter.. The defense scored the first one as Christian Walker blocked a GF punt which Will Calvert scooped up and ran in for a TD… The Hornets scored again later in the first quarter as their quarterback Jermarius Goodman carried the ball in from 1 yard out… The Hornets defense scored again in the second quarter on a pick-six by TyDreke Carroll… GF scored late in the game to make the final 20-6… The Hornets host Greenwood Chritian this Fiday night at Tommy Davis Field.

Pro Sports     For more information on each game, click on the score at the start.

  • Braves … The Breves finished their 4 game series with the Marlins over the weekend As you may recall they took a 6-5 win on Thursday… On Friday the Marlins rebounded to take a 7-1 win… However the Braves took Saturday’s game by a score of 6-5 and Sunday’s game 10-8… They are off tonight and will start a series in DC with the Nationals tomorrow night
  • Drive … The Greenville Drive and the Charleston RiverDogs completed their best of their series for the SAL Southern Division Championship over the weekend… To remind you, the Drive took game one down on the coast last Wednesday night… Friday night the RiverDogs evened the series by taking a 2-1 win at Flour Field… In the deciding game on Saturday there is good news for Drive fans as they shutout the RiverDogs by a score of 5-0 to capture the division title… The Drive will face off against the Kannapolis Intimidators, a Chicago White Sox affiliate, in the South Atlantic League Championship Series beginning on Monday night in Kannapolis… The Drive will look to continue their success against Kannapolis, as they posted a 7-2 record against the Intimidators in the regular season series… First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Clinton Gets New / Old Region Member Next Year… The executive committee of the SCHSL meet last week to consider appeals to the recently announce re-alignment for the next two school years… A few of the appeals were upheld and some were denied… Those that denied then had the opportunity to present their case to the appellate panel for the final word… Well it seems and old region foe Union County which had appealed their move to Class AAAA did take their case to the appellant committee and found a sympathetic ear… The committee allowed them to remain in Class AAA and they will be in the Region 3 with Clinton, Mid-Carolina, Newberry Emerald and Woodruff…It was a split decision that went 4-3… They will now be the largest AAA school with 1,100 students whereas they would have been the 8th smallest school in AAAA… Clinton with 824 students is in about the middle of Class AAA enrolment wise… All student numbers are from the 135 ADA used by the SCHSL to do the 2018-2020 re-alignment… Kind of makes me wonder if Laurens the third smallest AAAAA school with 1,607 students (Wando with 4,365 is the largest) might have caught a sympathetic ear also.
  • Meet The New Baseball Coach… The CHS Athletic Department and Athletic Director Nickie Templeton invite the community to meet our new varsity baseball coach, Tom Fortman, on September 8, prior to the varsity football game…  Coach Fortman will be on the middle school baseball field with soda and sports drinks from 6:30-7:15 that evening…  Please come out and chat with him before you head into Wilder Stadium to see the Red Devils take on South Aiken.  GO BIG RED!

Afterwards Coach Jim Iacuone commented “ I thought we handled our first match pretty well… This was the first match ever for Anna Gray and Madison. In tight matches, Kathleen Horner, Kathryn Tribble, and McKenzie Little played well to wins in singles action… With the match split with each time securing 3 wins each, the #1 doubles to the court for the chance to win. The doubles duo of Horner/Tribble played clean and kept their opponents off balance for a win that sent the Raiders into a 3rd round match up with Woodruff…. For more information on this match, click here.
  • Laurens 4 – Woodruff 4… In the 3rd round of the Highway 221 Eye-opener Tournament the Lady Raiders took the courts against a familiar foe playing the Woodruff Wolverines… The match started with Tribble was awarded a win after Cairnes became ill, giving the Raiders an early 1-0 lead… From that point forward, it became a repeat of near yearly matches against Woodruff… The girls grinded for long tough points and worked hard to gain points… The Raiders fell behind on the match score 1-3 before Horner and Little were above to each battle back from 1st set losses to pull out desperately needed wins in 3rd sets… The match hinged on the #1 doubles of Horner and Tribble… For the 2nd straight match Horner/Tribble picked up the win to give the Raiders a 4-3 win and the championship of Pool B… Kathleen Horner/Kathryn Tribble/McKenzie Little each received a game ball for their excellent play throughout the tournament with Kathleen Horner being named to the All-Tournament Team.

Clinton took over on their own 12 yard line after the kickoff and started running the ball down the field with a power running game like to Red Devil teams of days past… After getting to the Raider 39 they switched their tactics and Konnor Richardson hit a wide open Dawson Green for 6 points (kick was blocked) with 3:58 left on the clock in the first period… After a couple of possessions changes, the Raiders got on the board again on a 24 yard field goal by Hubner with 7:47 left in the half… Clinton came right back down the field and once again caught the Raider secondary napping as Richardson hit Zay Bennett on a 61 yard scoring strike (PAT missed)… The Raiders managed to put 7 more points on the board just before the halftime when Troy Dendy carried it in from 10 yards out and Hubner added the PAT to make it 17-12 at the half… Both teams continued to mostly pound the ball in the second half but the Raiders did pick up a TD through the air as Ryan Campbell hit Aaron McLeod on a 25 yard scoring strike with 5:59 left in the third quarter… Clinton’s last score came on an 11 yard run by Konnor Richardson with 9:36 left in the game and the point conversion failed… Clinton did not give up and drove down the field only to fumble at the Raider 11 yard line where Davon Richmond recovered the ball and the Raiders ran the clock out for the 24-18 win… Both coaches expressed pride in how their teams played in a hard-fought game… As soon as I get the official stats I will bring them too you… Clinton will host Greer this Friday night while Laurens travels to Inman to take on the defending AAA Champions the Chapman Panthers.
