  • Baseball: Seneca 11 – Laurens 8… The Raiders continued their participation in the Upstate Diamond Classic at JL Mann yesterday taking on the Seneca Bobcats and found themselves on the wrong side of an 11-8 final score with the Bobcats breaking an 5 game winning streak by the Raiders… To be honest it was not the best game the Raiders have played recently as 4 Raider errors figured into the Bobcat scores along with a couple of questionable calls by the umps (for me to say that as a retire 30 year umpire it takes a lot for me to say that). The Bobcats got on the board first scoring 4 runs in the first inning and part of them were on one of the questionable calls, 2 walks, a hit batter and a single… The Raiders responded by putting 3 runs on the board in the bottom of the first on a a couple of hits including an RBI double Kobe Williams and a sacrifice fly by Nathan Rutter… The Raiders tied the game in the bottom of the second when Tanner Smith walked, stole second and later scored on a pair of passed balls by the Seneca catcher… The Bobcats broke the game open in the third inning when they plated 6 runs on 4 hits, a pair of walks and a pair of Raider errors… The Raiders got one of the runs back in the fourth inning when Tanner Smith lead the inning off with a triple that was not handled cleanly by the Bobcats left fielder allowing him to score…. The Raiders mounted a comeback in the sixth inning that out 3 runs on the board to make it 10-8 Bobcats but in the top of the seventh the they got one of the runs back when they hit a sharp line drive in gap between Layton Mahon and Ty Foster that they were both trying to snag and collided and went to the ground… By the time they recovered enough to get the ball back in the Bobcat batter had raced home for an inside the park homer… The Raiders got the leadoff batter on in the seventh but a phantom double play eased him and the next batter struck out looking to end the game… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-BB-4-5-Sen … For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-BB-4-5-Sen-SC… The Raider continue action in the tournament today as they take on the host JL Mann Patriots at 5 pm and are scheduled to play tomorrow against a foe and at a time yet to be determined… When / if  I know the specifics, I’ll post that information on our homepage at www.wlbg.com.

  • Friday: CS 6 – PC 1… On Friday the Bucs took a 6-1 win over the Blue Hose largely in part to a pair of back to back homeruns by the Bucs in the fourth inning… The Bucs only outhit the Blue Hose 7-6 but theirs were more timely hits.
  • Saturday: CS 6 – PC 3 and CS 7 – PC 0… In the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday, the Bucs took a 6-3 win over the Blue Hose…. The game was tied 3-3 going into the bottom of the fifth inning when the Bucs struck for 3 runs then shut PC out the rest of the way… In eh second game on Saturday, the Blue Hose offensive woes continued as the Bucs took a 7-0 win to sweep the Blue Hose in the 3-game series…. PC managed only 1 hit in the game…. The team will be hosting South Carolina State tomorrow in a doubleheader with the first game starting at 2:00 pm.

  • Softball: Woodruff 5 – Clinton 0… The Red Devil softball teams traveled up to Woodruff yesterday and in varsity action the Clinton bats were on “spring break” as the Red Devils managed just one hit as the Wolverines took a 5-0 win over the Red Devils…Woodruff scored 2 runs in the bottom of the first inning and they would prove to be the winning runs as the Woodruff pitcher struck out 5 Red Devils and walked just 2 and did not give up a hit until the 9th inning when Caroline Birchmore singled with 2 outs…. For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: CHS-SB-4-2-18-Wood … For the games scorecard, click on the following: CHS-SB-4-2-18-Wood-SC… The team will not be in action again until next Monday when they travel to Whitmire for a JV – Varsity doubleheader.

  • Villanova Beats Michigan 79-62 to Win National Championship… Well in case you fell asleep or something worse happened to you last night, I’ll quickly tell you that Villanova won its second Div-I National Championship in three year as it defeated Michigan 79-62… The Wildcats did trail the Wolverines by 7 midway through the first half but did comeback to lead 37-28 at the half and were never really threatened after that… The game’s MVP was the Wildcats’ reserve guard Donte DiVincenzo who came off the bench and scored a career high 31 points… For more information about the game, click here.

  • Nationals 8 – Braves 1… Someone asked me at church Sunday what I thought about the Braves taking 2 of 3 from the Phillies to start their season and if it signaled a better year in store for the Braves… My reply was simple, it’s too early to tell but the we would have a better indication starting Monday as the Braves were going to be starting a 3-game series with the Washington Nationals in Atlanta a team that has given them a lot of problems in recent years… Well they did start the series last night and the nationals looked strong (at least stronger than the Braves as they took an 8-1 win outhitting the Braves 10-4… No Brave had more than 1 hit in the game.

Local Notes:

CHS

  • Baseball: Woodruff 7 – Clinton 6… After defeating the Wolverines at Woodruff by a score of 41 last Tuesday the Red Devils hoped to complete the sweep of the region foe at Clinton last Friday night but fell just short of that as the Wolverines took a 7-6 win in a tight game… According to the Woodruff game Changer accounting of the game the Wolverines jumped on top early scoring 2 runs in the top of the first inning… The Red Devils plated a single run in the second inning when Chance Ewell singled and later scored after Konnor Richardson and Corey Suber also singled in the inning….The Red Devils went up 4-3 when they plated 3 runs in the third inning when Griffin Fuller had 3-run homer over the left field fence… Woodruff retook the lead 5-4 in the top of the fourth plating 3 runs on a pair of walks, 2 hits and a sacrifice fly… I have heard that one of those hits was originally called out at first and would have ended the inning earlier but that the plate umpire overruled the base umpire saying the Clinton’s first baseman Dawson Green’s foot off the bag thus negating the out…. Coach Tom Fortman took issue with the ruling and ensuing “conversation” with the plate umpire resulted in only having him ejected from the game…Both teams scored single runs in the fifth inning with Clinton’s run being scored when Konnor Richardson doubled with two outs and then moved to third on a passed ball… He scored when the Woodruff pitcher was not able to handle strike 3 to Lane Cunningham allowing Cunningham to reach first and Richardson to score…. The Wolverines put their final run on the board in the top of the seventh inning making to score 7-5 Woodruff… The Red Devils started the seventh inning battling back as Suber and Richardson led the inning off with singles… The next two Red Devil batters popped out and struck out leaving the two baserunners at first and second… The runners were able to execute a double-steal putting themselves in better scoring position… Suber was then able to score on a wild pitch and Richardson moves to third… Alas the rally fell short as the Red Devil batter struck out looking to end the game…. Again according to the Woodruff scorer, The Red Devils outhit the Wolverines 12-7 with Konnor Richardson going 4-4 with one of his hits being a double… The Red Devils fall to 5-9 on the season and 2-4 in region play and will next be in action on Monday, April 9th when they travel to Laurens to take on the Raiders.in a JV – Varsity doubleheader.

  • Baseball: Laurens 9 – Emerald 3… Back in early March in their first game of the season the Laurens Raiders lost to the Emerald down in Greenwood by a score of 12-6 in a game where the Vikings scored all their runs in one inning on more walks, hit batters and errors than they had hits… Saturday afternoon the Raiders hosted the Vikings making up a rain postponed game from earlier in the season… They found out that the Raider team they faced Saturday is not the same team they defeated earlier as the Raiders took a 9-3 win… The Raiders got on the board first putting two runs on the board in the first inning… Ty Foster and Heath Bragg had back to back singles to lead off the inning for the Raiders… Foster later scored thanks to an Emerald error and Bragg scored on a sacrifice fly by Kobe Williams… The Vikings scored their 3 runs in the top of the fourth inning on a walk, 2 singles and a sacrifice fly to take a 3-2 lead… The Raiders responded by plating 2 runs in the bottom of the inning and held the Vikings scoreless the rest of the way… They added 3 in the fifth and 2 in the sixth making the final 9-3… Williams had another sac fly in the game and Kobe Williams had a pinch-hit triple driving in 2 runs… The Raiders had 10 hits with Foster, Heath Bragg and Nathan Rutter each getting 2 hits each… Heath Bragg started the game on the mound and went 4 innings giving the 3 earned runs and Nick Robertson game in to finish the game and picked up the win… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-31-Emer… For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-31-Emer-SC… The Raiders will be traveling to JL Mann later this week to participate in their Spring Break Tournament… They are scheduled to play 4 games in 4 days starting this Wednesday when they take on Daniel in a 2 pm contest.
