LDHS: The Laurens Raider varsity basketball teams traveled to Woodruff last night to take on the Wolverines in a doubleheader of basketball action

  • GBK: Woodruff 61 – Laurens 43… In girls action, the Lady Raiders got on the board first with a single free throw but that was the last time they would lead as Woodruff scored next an led the rest of the way in route to a 61-43 win… The Raiders had trouble completing shots and often got the offensive rebound but just could not put the ball back up and get points off those rebounds… The Raiders trailed 45-28 going into the final quarter of play but did not quit as they were able to cut the Wolverine lead to 10 (48-38) midway through the last 8 minutes of play but just could not get any closer… Qua Fortson was the only Raider in double digits as she scored 12 points… Others scoring for the Raiders were; Lay-Lay Todd 9, Cali Heisey 8, Kay Moore 4, Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon & Jayla Mosley 3 each, KT Foggie 2 and both Tieisha Jones and Alexus Espinosa each had 1.

We have tough kids and they responded exactly how I was expecting. Sandajah Vance, although recovering from the flu, played her heart out for HT and displayed that toughness I mentioned earlier.” “Woodruff played a balanced attack and gave us some trouble, but the good news, it is all fixable with good practice and hard work”.

LDHS:

  • Spartanburg 35 – Laurens 17… The Spartanburg Vikings ended the Laurens Raiders football season last Friday night by taking a 35-17 win in a game where they knew they had been in a fight especially the first half of the game… The V icings won the coin toss and elected to defer and the Raiders opened the game going 74 yards in their first drive and scoring on a 3 yard run by DQ Floyd an Devin Hubner’s PAT gave Laurens a quick 7-0 lead… The Vikings answered on their first drive as their QB William Yex connected with Romain Kelly on a 77 yard scoring pass on the third play of the drive and the PAT tied the game 7-7… On their next drive the Vikings attempted a field goal by Tyzay Hill blocked it… Two possessions later the Raiders regained the lead as Hubner connected on a 23 yard field to put the Raiders up 10-7 with 7:09 left in the half… Two possessions later the Vikings scored on a 40 yard pass and Pat to go up 14-10… Their drive was aided by a roughing the passer call on a crucial third down… The Raiders did not let that lead hold up long as Troy Dendy bolted 73 yards on the second play after the Viking TD and the Raiders regained the lead with 1:52 left in the half… The Vikings pulled the old halfback pass out of their playbook and scored with 31 seconds left in the half to take a 21-7 lead into the locker room at the half… The second half obviously had a lot less scoring and to be honest the Vikings capitalized on two Raider miscues while the Raiders were not able to do the same on a Viking fumble on the second play of the third period… The Raiders had the ball at the Viking 39 after the fumble but turned the ball over on downs as the Viking defense stopped them on fourth down… The Vikings next score came with 6:16 left in the third quarter to cap a short 14 yard drive that was set up by a botched punt attempt… The Vikings final points of the game came when they had an 86 yard pick-six interception with 3:38 left in the third quarter to go up 35-17…The Raiders never gave up but an interception in the endzone and a fumble at the goal line pretty much sealed the win for the Vikings… The Vikings ended the game with 416 yards of offense (363 of it passing) while the Raiders had 374 yards (350 of it rushing)… Troy Dendy had 195 yards and DQ Floyd 173 yards… For complete game statistics and play by play account of the game, click on the following: spartanburg-at-laurens-game-info  …. The Vikings improve to 9-3 on the season and will host Dorman Friday night while the Raiders finish the season 6-6.
  • Notes and Comments… After the game Coach Liner expressed his comments about how special he thought this team was and his love for the team especially the way they hung together through all the adversity of the season… He also expressed his thanks to his staff… Personally I want to say “Amen” to his comments and thank him for his efforts during the season… Yes the team had a .500 season but all their losses were to teams that made it to the playoffs and most are still in the playoffs… If you look at the multitude of injuries that occurred throughout the season many of which were season ending to starters, it is a testament to his leadership and the talent of his coaching staff plus the team’s desire to pull off this great a season with all that happened… Thanks to him, his staff and the Laurens Raiders for a great season!

  • Coach Webb Get’s Vote of Confidence… Yesterday Interim Head Football Coach of the Clinton Red Devils Coach Andrew Webb had his title shortened by one word as Dr. David O’Shields announced that the “Interim” portion of his title removed… In his announcement Dr. O’Shields mentioned 4 goals hew had discussed with Coach Webb at the time of his initial hiring prior to the 2015 season… He stated that Coach Webb had more than met those goals plus another he (Coach Webb) had set for himself… If you would like to see the entire announcement which includes what those goals were, click here… My personal congratulations to Coach Webb and to Dr. O’Shields for making this move… Go Big Red!!

LDHS:

  • GBK: BHP 55 – Laurens 32… The Lady Raider basketball team traveled back to BHP last night to finish their participation in the pre-season tournament hosted by BHP and their opponent was BHP… BHP got on the board first and never trailed as they led 12=6 at the end of the first quarter and 29-14 at the half largely due to the Bear’s Shanteal Davis scored 11 of her game high 27 points in the second quarter as the Bears rolled on to the win… neither team handled the ball very well as there was a total of 46 turnovers in the game with BHP having 28 of them… The Bears were able to get the ball inside while Laurens concentrated on the outside shots that just would not fall… The Raiders played scrappy defense but had trouble converting the steals and turnovers into points… The Raiders were leading scoring by Cali Heisey who had 5 points… Scoring 4 points each for the Raiders were Qua Fortson, Laylay Todd and KT Foggie… Alexus Espinosa, MK Moore and Jayla Mosley all had 3 points each… Rounding out the scoring with 2 points each were Ny Ny Spurgeon, KB Burnside and Tieisha Jones… The team is now 1-1 on the season.
  • BBK: Boiling Springs 70 –Laurens 53… While the effort was much improved, the result was still the same as the Laurens Raiders fell to the Boiling Springs Bulldogs 70-53 in the second round of the Spartanburg Christian Academy Preseason Thanksgiving Tournament in a game that was much more competitive than the final score indicated… The Raiders had leads in each of the first three quarters, but could not find a way to hold on in the final quarter…. The Raiders raced out to a 20-10 lead halfway through the second quarter. The Raiders were sparked by Josh Greene, who scored 13 of his 25 points in the first half and Christian Anderson who scored 5 points in the second quarter. However, the Raiders could not close the quarter out strong and Boiling Springs went on a 20-4 run to close the first half and lead by 6 at the break… The Raiders came out of the locker room with a spark and quickly tied the game at 30 all with 6 minutes remaining in the 3rd quarter on a steal and a score by Justin Anderson… Josh Greene scored another 7 points in the third quarter as both teams traded leads… The turning point of the game occurred late in the third quarter when Ryan Dacre fouled out in the post… Due to an injury to post player Carson Todd in game one, the Raiders were already thin in the post… Once Dacre fouled out, Boiling Springs closed the game on a 27-14 run with many of their points coming in the paint… Forced to foul and take gambles late, the Raiders went from 4 points down with 4 minutes to play to down 13 by the end of the game… Josh Greene led the Raiders with a game high 25 points… Justin Anderson and Christian Anderson contributed 8 points each… Dontae Shumpert scored 5 points, Connor Dunlap had 3 points and Ryan Dacre and Keenan Dickey each had 2 points…With the loss, the Raiders will play Monticello, Georgia at noon on today in the final round of the SCA Preseason Tournament… The Raiders first regular season contest is Tuesday, November 29th at Woodruff… Story contributed by Coach Ben Sinclair

  • Chester 24 – Clinton 16… The CHS Red Devils traveled to Chester last Friday night in opening round action of the Class AAA Playoffs and though the Red Devils led in most all the statistical categories after the final horn had sounded the one they did not lead in was the score as the Cyclones took a 24-6 win… The Red Devils generated 359 yards of total offense to Chester’s 268 and had 20 first downs to Chester’s 15 but the one statistic that would hurt the Red Devils was fumbles… The Red Devils fumbled twice and lost them both at the most inopportune times… The Red Devils fumbled at the Chester 38 on their first possession of the game and Chester went down the field and scored but missed the PAT to make it 6-0 Cyclones… The Red Devils would move the ball but just could not finish them in the first half and held the Cyclones to a field goal to make the score 9-0 at the end of the half… Clinton started the second half driving into Chester territory before the drive stalled… Chester the scored to make the score 16-0… Mark Wise had a good return on the ensuing kickoff and the Red Devils started their comeback with Wise scoring on a 29 yard run but the two-point conversion failed and the Red Devils trailed 16-6 with 5:13 left in the third quarter… The Red Devil defense then held the Cyclones to 3 and out and Clinton drove to the Chester 33 before they turned the ball over on the second fumble of the game… The Cyclones could not turn the turnover into points as the Red Devil defense hung tuff and after a punt Clinton drove 55 yards and scored on a 7 yard run by Koko Richey to make the score 16-13 after Elvis Fitz added the PAT with 7:41 left in the game… Neither team could do anything on their next possession and Chester scored for the last time with 3:22 left in the game to make 24-13… Clinton then drove to the Chester 26 before the drive stalled and Fitz kicked a 43 yard field goal with 1:13 left in the game… The Red Devils then executed a successful onsides kick that they recovered at the Clinton 49 yard line… The Red Devils did manage a first down but on 4-10 at the Cyclone 34 Craven just could not connect with Jalen Carter and the Cyclone took over and only needed to run one “Victory Kneel” to run out the clock… Coach Andrew Webb was quoted as saying he was proud of the effort in the contest and throughout the season…. The Red Devils finish the season 5-6… For stats on the game, click on the following:  clinton-at-chester-stats-11-18-16 ….For a play by play narrative on the game, click on the following: clinton-at-chester-11-18-16-play-by-play

LDHS:

  • Laurens 35 – Woodmont 7… Bow it was better news for Laurens Raider football fans as they defeated Woodmont 35-7 at KC Hanna Stadium last Friday night to advance to the second round of the Class AAAAA Playoffs against Spartanburg this Friday night… Both teams looked a little out of synch ion the first half as the 3 weeks off (4 in Woodmont’s case) seemed to have an effect on the teams but Laurens led 14-7 at the half on a pair of TD passes from Ryan Campbell to Demond Cunningham (5 yards) and Aaron McCloud (36 yards)… A note here: Cunningham recovered two Raider fumbles in the game to keep drives alive and the ball away from the Wildcats…The Wildcats lone TD cam in the closing moments of the first half after they blocked a Raider punt and then drove 30 yards for the score… The second half was all Raiders…The Raiders scored first after the Wildcats muffed a punt reception and Tyzay Hill recovered and the Raiders set up shop at the Wildcat 28 yard line… The Drive ended 7 plays later when Campbell scored for 2 yards on 4th and 1 AT THE Wildcat 2 yard line… Devin Hubner added the PAT to make it 21-7… After the game Campbell said he actually handed the ball to Hunter Medlin as he was going down and Hunter scored… The Raider defense then held Woodmont to 3 and out and the Raiders then mounted a 48 yard drive with DQ Flout scoring from 13 yards out to make the score 28-7 after PAT just before the end of the third quarter… Early in the final quarter Woodmont drove to the Raider 21 yard line before turning the ball over on downs… The Raiders then drove 79 yards in just 5 plays with the score coming on a 46 yard run by Troy Dendy… With Hubner’s PAT the Raiders led 35-7 with 6:17 left in the contest… The Wildcats then picked up one first down but were forced to punt and the Raiders took over on their own 19 yard line and the subs took over… Duane Martin had at least 5 rushes to put the Raiders at the Wildcat 2 yard line with a first and goal to go… The raiders elected to run a couple of “Victory Kneels” to run out the clock and get their first playoff win in 8 years…. • Liberty 16 – PC 0…Last Saturday the Blue Hose football team played its last home game of the season and honored the senior football players… The game did not turn out as the seniors would have liked as Liberty took a 16-0 win… PC simply had trouble generating much offense as two fumbles and two interceptions took their toll… The Blue Hose were only able to generate 175 total yards of offense and 9 first downs… For more about this game and including comments from Coach Nichols, click here.
  • Men’s Soccer: PC 2 – Liberty 1… On Sunday the PC men’s soccer team accomplished a program first as they defeated Liberty 2-1 in the Big South Championship Tournament… The #5 seeded Blue Hose upset of Liberty which gave them their first ever win in the Big South Tournament… For details on the match, click here… They advance now to the semifinals tomorrow night where they must take on top seeded Radford.

CHS:Webb, Andrew

  • Audio of Coach Webb after Woodruff Game… On thing I forgot to put onto yesterday’s sports report was the audio of Coach Webb’s comments to the media after last Friday night’s big win over Woodruff… As you might expect, there was a lot of excitement and celebrating around him so there is a good bit of “background noise” in the comments but I think you can hear what he says for the most part.

College Sports:

  • FBS AP Poll… This week’s FBS AP Poll had no changes in the top 6 spots from last week’s… Starting with #1 you have Alabama, Michigan, Clemson, Washington, Louisville and Ohio State… Wisconsin moved up a spot to #7 and Auburn moved up 3 spots to #8… Oklahoma and Texas A&M round out the top 10… To see the entire top 25 in the AP Poll, click here.
  • College Football Playoff Rankings… As a reminder, last week the football playoff committee came out with their first rankings and the top 5 then were close to the latest AP Poll… Alabama was #1, Clemson 2, Michigan 3, Texas A&M 4 and Washington 5… I expect that tom change somewhat with their next release as Texas A&M suffered another loss this last weekend.
  • FCS Coaches Poll… Now a quick look at the FCS Coaches Poll has no change in the top 5 spots… They are Sam Houston State, Jacksonville State, Eastern Washington, North Dakota State and James Mattson… Good news for Citadel fans as they move up a notch to #6 with a 9-0 record… Chattanooga comes in at #7… One other area team in the top 25 is Charleston Southern who checks in at #14 dropping from #9 last week… By the way, PC’s opponent Liberty this past weekend broke into the poll at #24… To see the entire top 25, click here.

Clinton 32 – Woodruff 24 in OT… The Clinton Red Devils went into Friday night’s game with Woodruff knowing they had made the playoffs the only question was that of where they would finish in the region and thus where they would play the first-round playoff game in 2 weeks… A loss to Woodruff they finish fourth and would be on the road… A win against Woodruff they finish second or third depending on the number of points Woodruff scored… The Red Devils picked up the 32-24 win in overtime but gave 2 points more than they needed to finish second and finished third in the region… The game was tied 24-24 at the end of regulation and Clinton was the first to get the ball in the OT at the Woodruff 10 yard line… On the first play in OT Koko Richey picked up his 2nd TD of the night to put Clinton up 30-24… The Red Devils lined up for a 2-point attempt and luckily the officials did not see Coach Webb trying to get a timeout as the ball was snapped and Richey bulled his way into the end zone to put Clinton up 32-24… It was then time for the Red Devil defense to go to work and that they did Big Time… On the first two plays the Woodruff’s Keegan Holloran whose passing for 290 yard on the night had given the Red Devils problems all night, was sacked twice for a total loss of 18 yards and both times I think it was Tashymen Boyd getting to him… Holloran did complete a pass on 3rd down to get the ball back to the 16 yard line but his pass into the left-rear corner of the endzone on 4th down was deflected and the celebration began…. The Red Devils looked like they were going to hold the Wolverines down to the required number of defensive points as they led 17-7 at the half… Mark Wise had scoring runs of 60 and 2 yards in the first half with Elvis Fitz making both PATs and he also had a 25-yard field goal sandwiched between Wise’s runs… Woodruffs only TD of the half came on their last possession of the half via the air… In the second half Woodruff quickly made it known that they still had fight left in them as they scored 17 unanswered points on their first three possession of the half putting the Red Devils down 24-17 with 6:07 left in the third quarter.. They had 2 first-play of the possessions TDs and then a 24-yard field goal that would ultimately be the difference between Clinton finishing third and second in the region… After the field goal, Clinton came right back down the field and tied the game on a 3 yard run by Richey with Fitz again adding the PAT at the 2:22 mark of the third quarter… Woodruff missed 2 field goals in the second half and the Red Devils had the last drive of regulation end with an interception at the Wolverine 1 yard line with just seconds to go setting up the overtime win… For statistics on the game, click on the following: woodruff-at-clinton-short-stats … For a play-by-play account of the game, click on the following: woodruff-at-clinton-plays… By finishing third in the region, Clinton will be on the road for the first round of the playoffs on November 18th… While the official bracket seeds have not yet been released by the SCHSL, It appears that the Red Devils will travel to Chester to take on an old foe in the Cyclones.

Red Devil Tennis Team Plays For Upper State Championship Today… A quick reminder that the Lady Red Devil tennis team will be traveling down to Prosperity, SC for a 5:00 pm match with the Lady Rebels of Mid-Carolina with the Upper State Championship on the line a trip to Columbia to play in the State Class-AAA Championship this coming Saturday… As you may remember the Rebels are in the same region as the Red Devils and were to only region team to defeat Clinton (twice) in region play thus earning the region championship while Clinton took second… I am sure the team would love to see a large crowd follow them down and cheer them on as they seek revenge and a trip to the finals… Go Big Red!

World Series

  • Cubs 8 – Indians 7 (10)… Well in case you did not stay up until after midnight to see the end of the game, I’ll tell you that if you run into a Chicago Cub fan toady they will have a big smile on their face because last night the Cubs broke a 108 year drought as they defeated the Cleveland Indians 8-7 in 10 innings to win game 7 of the World Series in Cleveland… The Cubs had a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the 8th inning when Cleveland struck for 3 runs to tie the game… The game remained that way until the top of the 10th inning when the Cubs Ben Zobrist had a double to drive in what would prove to be the winning runs… Cleveland did not go quietly as they plated a run before the Cubs were able to register the third out triggering celebrations on the field and back in Chicago… For more information on this game, click here… By the way, Zobrist was named the series MVP not only because of game winning hit but also because of his .357 batting average during the series… Something tells me the late Mr. Cub Ernie Banks is smiling from his vantage point today.
