Volleyball and Softball at LDHS Getting New Head Coaches… In a press release yesterday, Ed Murray the Dist. 55 Athletic Director announced that the Raiders will have new volleyball and softball head coaches… To read the entire press release about this, click here.

  • Softball… The Raider softball team is also getting a new head coach and it will be a familiar face as Raider Micaela Smith is giving up her last year of eligibility to play college softball at Anderson University to take over the Raiders as Coach Satterfield departs… As you may recall she graduated from LDHS in 2015 and earned a scholarship to play at Anderson where she has been very successful… Coach Butch Clark ranks her in the top 5 of the players he has coached and had other very positive remarks about her… When I contacted her last night she said she was excited to come back to the Raiders but it was not an easy decision giving up her last year of softball at Anderson but it was an opportunity almost too good to pass up to come back and coach at the school she loves… She will continue working on her degree in biology with an eye on teaching in District 55 in the 2019-2020 school year… I can promise you both her and her parents are excited about this opportunity… My best wished to both coaches and “Welcome back Michaela!

Jim’s “full time” job is working in the district’s IT Department.
  • Rob Sheffield… I didn’t think Rob Sheffield had any more room on his plate as it is pretty full teaching, being the wrestling coach and one of the faculty members working with the Robotz Garage but he must have a little more rom as he will be an assistant AD also… A lot of his duties will most likely revolve around the fall sports and game day operations… I just hope he will still be able to help us out on our football broadcast if we need him!
  • Lee Taylor… Coach Lee Taylor is slated to be an Asst. AD this year… As you may recall, he joined the Raider football staff this past season coming from Mauldin HS… Coach Taylor will be an asset to Coach Spires as he served as AD at Southside HS for 5 years and an Assistant AD at Mauldin for 7.
  • TBA… Now Coach Adam Taylor was penciled in to be the fourth assistant but his recent promotion to assistant principal at LDHS plus his other coaching duties forced a change in plans there… Coach Spires said they hope to name the fourth assistant soon.

  • Johnston Returning to District 55… A couple of weeks ago I learned through “the grapevine” that Chris Johnston was coming back to Laurens Dist. 55 as the athletic director at Hickory Tavern MS replacing Jon Jansen who is leaving to become the head girls basketball coach at Woodruff HS… At that time I called him and he told me that was true but that all the “paper work and legal stuff” had not been completed… I confirmed at that time with Dist. 55 officials he was coming back as a teacher but the as I said all the formalities had not been completed… Other media sources are now reporting what I already knew but was holding back for the official announcement… Chris as you may recall was AD and coach at Laurens MS for a number of years where his football and basketball teams were very successful… He left the district last year to return to his home school Ware Shoals HS as PE teacher and girls’ basketball coach… Chris’s late father Bob Johnston was a teacher and held a similar position as girls’ basketball coach of the Hornets for many years winning several State Championships and the gym there is named after him…  Chris said it was always a dream of his to go back to ware Shoals and coach and he was very thankful to AD Mike Craigo and Principal Paul Anderson (both Ware Shoals alumni) for giving him that chance… When asked why he chose to leave he expressed 2 reasons… One was the opportunity to be able to “run his own program” again and the fact that Hickory Tavern is such a great school and community very much like Ware Shoals… Congratulations to Chris and welcome back!

  • Caughman New Softball Coach at CHS… A week ago today I happened to be at CHS for a Jahleed’s Cook signing with Newberry College… I happened to ask Coach Andrew Caughman who is Assistant AD at CHS if he had any idea who would be taking Coach Dillon Salmans place as Head Coach of the Red Devil softball team… His response was that I was looking at him… He told me it was not official yet but since other media sources have mentioned it I thought I would to… After congratulating him I asked if any of the assistant coaches would be staying on to help him… He assured me that before he commuted to the job he put in a call to G. Ramage to see if would be his assistant… A positive response from Ramage then caused him to ask AD Nickie Templeton to put his name in the hat for the job and a few days later…  He admitted he had never coached softball before but was looking forward to the challenge and building on the foundation that Coach Salmans established this year… He will continue coaching middle school football but will be giving up his assistant AD job… Congratulations to Coach Caughman!
