LDHS

  • Thomas Jones Picks Up Another Honor… Soon to be LDHS graduate Thomas Jones picked up another postseason honor yesterday as he was name the Gatorade State Player of the Year… This award goes to the outstanding player in each state and it is NOT based just on athletic performance on the field but also academic achievement, personal character, volunteerism, sportsmanship and leadership… Everyone around here knows that he had an outstanding year on the field hitting .420 with 5 home runs and 19 RBIs… What is often overlooked is his 3.66 GPA and participation in FCA as well as literary outreach volunteer work and Boys State… Now for more information on him and this award as well as a link to other Gatorade State Winners, click here…. Thomas has signed to play at Vanderbilt but the MLB draft coming up in a couple of weeks could alter those plans… Congratulations to Thomas on a very well deserved award!!

Laurens AcademyIMG_7585

  • Sports Awards Banquet… Last night Laurens Academy had the Sports Award banquet where all the various Crusader teams and cheerleaders were recognized… It was a fun evening for all with the various coaches supposedly competing to see who could take the least amount of time to recognize their teams and hand out awards… Some of the coaches lost that big time… I’ll try to have a more complete list of those taking some of the awards tomorrow… For some photos from the event click on the following: Photos from Laurens Academy 2016 Sports Award Banquet

College Notes:

  • SEC Baseball Tournament… There was one game in the SEC Baseball Tournament yesterday that was of interest to Gamecock fans… That game involved #7 seeded Ole Miss taking on the #10 seed Georgia Bulldogs… The reason being that the winner is who the Gamecocks will be playing today… Well Ole Miss sent the Dawgs back to the Athens kennel by taking a 5-1 win… Ole Miss and South Carolina will play today 45 minutes after the 10:30 am game between Texas A&M and Vanderbilt… All tournament games are televised on the SEC Network…. Pro Sports

  • Braves: Milwaukie 2 – Braves 1… The Braves started a home stand last night with the Brewers being the first team into The Ted… The Braves continue their non-winning ways as the Brew Crew (which have a less than stellar 19-26 record themselves) handed the Braves a 2-1 loss dropping their record to 12-32… I would imagine that if you wanted to go to Atlanta and watch the two teams play at 7 pm you would have no trouble getting tickets.
  • Drive: Ashville 17 – Greenville 7… The Greenville Drive saw their season record drop to 21-23 as the fell (hard) to the Ashville Tourist 17-7 last night in Ashville… If you like offense this was your game as the two teams belted out 35 hits with Ashville getting 20 of them…. Greenville had 4 homers and the Tourist 1… The teams will play in Ashville again today at 11:05 am.

Local Notes:

Laurens Academy

  • Baseball… Holly Hill Academy 5 – Laurens Academy 0… I have often heard the saying “some days you get the bear and some days the bear gets you.”… Well yesterday down at Hammond School in Columbia the L.A. Crusaders and the Holly Hill Raiders faced off in game 3 of the SCISA Class-A baseball championship series and as far as the Crusaders were concerned it was “the bear getting them” as the Raiders defeated the Crusaders 5-0 to take home the big trophy… The “bear” for the Raiders was their sophomore pitcher Hanks Avinger who carried a no-hitter into the top of the seventh inning when with two outs Cade Robertson denied him the no-hitter with a bloop single just over the second baseman’s head… Prior to that, Avinger had allowed only two other base runners a walk to Nick Johnson in the first inning and hitting Josh Urwick with a pitch in the sixth inning… Unlike game two where he took the loss, last night he had not only his fastball but also his curve working as he struck out 14 Crusaders… H.H.A. got single runs in the second, third and fourth innings and then added two insurance runs in the fifth… HHA finishes their season with a 24-10 season record while the Crusader finish their season 21-9… The Crusaders say goodbye to 5 seniors who finished their career at LA last night… They are; Josh Urwick, Ryan Holmes, Noah Stribling, Nate Martin and Ryan Sneed…. For the game’s box score and stats click on the following: 2016-5-23_BB-vs-Holly_Hill-Gm-3 … For the game’s scorecard click on the following: 2016-5-23_BB-vs-Holly_Hill-Gm-3_Scorecard

For more information on these games, click here.

Pro Sports

  • Braves… The Braves finished their 3-game series with the Phillies in Philadelphia over the weekend… On Friday they took a 7-1 win over the Phills and on Saturday a 2-0 win and that marked the first time this season the Braves have won two games in a row… Yesterday the Braves returned to “normal” losing 5-0… Now I promise the Braves will NOT lose tonight as they have the night off before starting a home stand tomorrow with the Brewers being the first team in on the home stand… By the way, the Braves are now 12-31 on the season.

College Baseball

  • Rankings… It’s been a while since we have had time to look at the NCAA D-I baseball rankings so let’s do that now as many of the schools are heading into the last week of their regular season and many conference tournaments will start next week… In the USA Today Coaches’ Poll the top 5 teams remain the same as last week.. Holding down spots 1-5 are Florida, Texas A&M, Miami, Mississippi State and Louisville… There was some shakeup in spots 6-10 which this week are occupied in descending order by Mississippi, Texas Tech, LSU, Vanderbilt and South Carolina… Lot of SEC teams in there…. Clemson checked into this week’s poll at #18.
  • Clemson Baseball… The Clemson Tigers are 35-18 on the season and 13-14 in ACC play… In their last game on Tuesday night they took a 3-2 win over Charleston Southern @ Doug Kingsmore Stadium… The Tigers will start their final regular season series tonight at 6:05 pm at Notre dame… The series will conclude with a game tomorrow at the same time and on Saturday with a 1:05 start.
  • South Carolina… The Gamecocks are 39-13 so far this season and 17-9 in SEC play… In their last outing Tuesday night they took a lopsided 16-4 win over the Citadel in Columbia… They also start their final regular season today as they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala. to start a 3-game series with The Tide… First pitch tonight is scheduled for 8 pm…. They play tomorrow at the same time and conclude the series on Saturday with a 3 pm game… I do believe that all 3 of the games will be on the SEC+ Network.

Pro Sports

  • Braves: Yesterday the Braves dismissed their manager Freddie Gonzalez after a dismal 9-28 start to the season… Brian Snitker who has been the Triple-A Gwinnett Coach was named the interim manager… To read more about this, click here… The change did not help the Braves last night as they fell to the Pirates in Pittsburg by a score of 12-9… My question is who and when do they fire those responsible for trading off some of the best talent the Braves had over the last couple of seasons leaving Gonzalez with a mostly “minor league” pool of players to use… It’s always easier to fire one person rather than multiple people who may be just a responsible for a team’s demise.
  •  Drive 4 – Charleston 2… Same two teams play again tonight at Flour Field (7:05 start)

Local Notes:

  • Laurens Academy: Raiders 3 – Crusaders 2… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Holly Hill last night to take on the Holly Hill Academy Raiders in game 1 of the SCISA Class-A Championship Series… The ride back up I-26 was not as pleasant as it might have been for the Crusaders as the Raiders took a 3-2 win… To their credit, the Crusaders never gave up scoring their two runs in the last two innings of the game… The Raiders scored a single run in the first and two in the third to hold a 3-0 lead going into the top of the sixth inning… In the sixth inning the first two Crusaders were retired in order and then Chuck Johnson started the rally with a walk on a 3-2 count… Will Price the followed drawing a walk on 4 consecutive pitches…. Noah Stribling then singled driving in Johnson… The inning then ended on a strikeout… The Raiders did not score in the bottom of the inning and the Crusaders trailed 3-1 going into the top of the seventh… With one out in the seventh, Will Tindall had a line-drive double into left field… The next Crusader batter struck out leaving the Crusaders one out from the loss… Ryan Holmes then lined a 2-2 pitch into right field driving in Tindall… Josh Urwick then drew a 3-2 walk to put runners on first and second… Unfortunately, the next batter grounded into a fielder’s choice with Holmes being forced out at third to end the rally and the game… Daniel Black took the complete game loss giving up 3 earned runs on 7 hits while striking out 2 and walking 2… The Crusaders managed just 5 hits in the game and no Crusader had more than 1 hit with Cade Robertson’s and Tindall’s hits both being doubles… For the box score and some stats, click on the following: 2016-5-16_BB-vs-Holly_Hill-Gm-1… For the game’s scorecard, click on the following: 2016-5-16_BB-vs-Holly_Hill-Gm-1_Scorecard… Now the two teams are scheduled to meet today at Laurens Academy with first pitch at 6 pm… It is a must win situation for the Crusaders if they want to extend the series to a third game on Thursday at a neutral site… Good luck to the Crusaders!!

The Hawks responded with 2 runs in the top of the fourth inning when their first batter reached on a walk… The next two Hawks flew out and the following batter doubled driving in a run… Moment later he scored on a Crusader error making the score 2-1 Hawks… The Crusaders wasted little time getting those two runs back as in the bottom the inning they put 3 on the board themselves… A walk, a double and another walk loaded the bases… A sacrifice fly by Ryan Sneed for the first out scored Will Price from third… A walk to Will Tindal reloaded… A passed ball during the next two at-bats allowed Noah Stribling and Cade Robertson to score the Crusaders final two runs… The Hawks threatened in the top of the seventh inning getting a runner on third with one out but relief pitcher Daniel Black was able to stifle the Hawks rally… The Hawks had only 3 hits in the game and the Crusaders did little better with just 4… No Crusader had more than 1 hit and Noah Stribling’s was the only extra base hit a double… Nick Johnson picked up the win with both Noah Stribling and Daniel Black registering a save… For the box score and stats, click on the following: 2016-5-13_BB-vs-Colleton_Prep_Acd_SF-Gm-3…. • Seneca 1 – Clinton 0… The Red Devil baseball team traveled to Seneca yesterday to take on the Bobcats in an upper-state elimination game and it turned out to be a battle of the Tristans, Seneca’s Tristan Hudson vs. Clinton’s Tristan Smaltz… Between them the two pitchers allowed only six hits, struck out 16, walked just 3 and allowed just 1 run… Unfortunately for the Red Devils, it was the Bobcats who had the 1 run as Seneca took a 1-0 win over the Red Devils eliminating them from the playoffs and ending their season with a great 23-3 record… Both pitchers rocked along pitching scoreless ball until the bottom of the fourth inning when with one out the Bobcats had back to back singles followed by a hit batter… The next batter reached on a fielder’s choice with the out being recorded at second and the runner at third scoring the game’s only run… Seneca’s Hudson continued to pitch hitless ball until the seventh inning when with one out, Brayden Webb had Clinton’s first hit of the night a double… Davis Cunningham then came to the plate and lashed a single into centerfield and Webb made the turn at third and headed for home… The throw beat Webb to the plate by an eyelash and he was called out at home… The next Clinton batter struck out ending the Red Devil’s season… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-5-11-CHS_BB_vs_Seneca_PO  …. Laurens Academy:

Baseball: Laurens Academy 7 – Colleton Prep 6… The Laurens Academy Crusaders opened up play in the SCISA Class A Semi-Finals yesterday as they hosted the Hawks of Colleton Prep out of Walterboro… It was a game where the Crusaders jumped out to an early 4-0 lead but that evaporated as the led 6-5 going into the bottom of the seventh inning when the Crusaders scored 2 runs and won the game on a walk-off double by josh Urwick to take the win… The Crusaders struck for 4 runs in the bottom of the second inning on just 1 hit and 3 mistakes by the Hawks… Daniel Black did have a sacrifice bunt to drive in 1 of the 4 runs… The Hawks scored 2 runs n the fourth inning and one in the fifth to make the score 4-3 Crusaders… The Crusaders picked up another run in the fifth inning when Nick Johnson led the inning off with a walk and later scored on an error by the Hawks to make it 5-3…. The Hawks took the lead in the top of the sixth inning scoring 3 runs on 2 hits but were aided by 2 walks, 2 hit batters and an error by the Crusaders… This gave them a 6-5 lead… The Crusaders could not score in the bottom of the sixth but did hold the Hawks scoreless in the top of the seventh setting the stage for the comeback in the bottom of the seventh… After 1 out in the bottom of the seventh, Will Price started the comeback with a single and moved to second on a single by Noah Stribling… Cade Robertson reached on a fielder’s choice as Stribling was forced out at second and Price moved to third… Ryan Sneed was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with 2 outs and that is when Urwick had the game winning double bringing in Price and Robertson… The outcome was momentarily in question when one of the umps said that the Crusaders rushed onto the field in celebration before the winning run touched the plate…After a meeting on the infield by all three of the umps, it was decided that the runs would stand and it was time to go home and hunt some supper… The Hawks actually outhit the Crusaders 9-6 but they also committed 4 errors to the Crusaders 2… Daniel Black started the game for the Crusaders going 5 innings before running out of gas… He gave up the 6 runs (only 5 of which were earned) on 8 hits while striking out 4 and walking 2… Nick Johnson pitched ⅓ of an inning before giving way to Noah Stribling who picked up the win despite a sore back going the last inning and ⅔ … Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-5-10_BB-Colleton_Prep_Acd_SF-Gm-1  …. • Baseball: BHP 2 – Clinton 0…. For only the second time this year, the Red Devil baseball team came up on the short end of a final score as they lost to the nationally ranked Bears of BHP by a score of 2-0 in the opening round of the Class-AAA Upper-State Championships last night at The Sponge… It was a game that saw a total of 8 hits between the two teams with BHP having 5 of them… The Bears started Austin Todd (a Citadel commit) on the mound who had a sneaky fastball set up by a nice curve ball which found the strike zone more times than not… The Red Devils threatened in the bottom of first as Aaron Copeland led off with a double and moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Brayden Gibbs… Two batters later the Red Devils attempted a suicide-squeeze but BHP had called for a pitch-out and Copeland was caught in rundown for the out… Clinton never really threatened after that as Todd and the BHP defense did not allow another Red Devil past first base the remainder of the game… The Bears got single runs in the first and sixth innings… The loss went to Jeremy Simmons who started for the Red Devils and really did not pitch that bad who gave up the 2 earned runs on 5 hits while striking out 4 and walking none… A couple of timely hits and sacrifices by the Bears proved to be the difference….
