CHS:

  • Tennis: Woodruff 4 – Clinton 1… Yesterday I told you that the lady Red Devil tennis team was supposed to play Woodruff in the third round of the AAA Tournament but no one had sent me the score in time to get it on yesterday’s sports report… Well I know have the results of that match up a Woodruff on Wednesday and I must say that the Wolverines ended the Red Devils season by taking a 4-1 win… Mary Catherine Dailey picked up the Red Devils only win as the #2 singles player but a couple of others were close…. For complete match details, click here… Woodruff as you may know is in the same region as the Red Devils and finished second in the region while Clinton finished third in the region… Woodruff advances to play Mid-Carolina for the upper state crown on Monday… Mid-Carolina is in the same region with Clinton and Woodruff and they finished first in the region…  The reason I point this out is to simply say the Red Devils are in a tough region when it comes to girls tennis…  If you would like to look back at their schedule and results for this season, click here.
  • JV FB: Clinton 42 – Woodruff 34… The JV team finishes the season 5-0 in region play… Sorry no details on scoring… To see the team’s schedule and result, click here.

LDHS… The Raider 9th grade and JV football teams closed out their season last night at KC Hanna Stadium as they hosted the Greenwood Eagles

  • 9th Grade: Greenwood 27 – Laurens 6… In the first game last night, the Greenwood Eagles took a 27-6 win over the Raiders… Greenwood used their running game to take a 14-0 lead at the half and the Raiders only score with 1:08 left in the third quarter When Shemare Dendy capped a 55 yard drive with a 1 yard run to make the score 14-6… Greenwood scored twice in the fourth quarter to make the final score 27-0… To see the schedule and results for the Raiders, click here.
  • JV: Laurens 32 – Greenwood 7… Now the news is better for Raider fans where the JV team is concerned as the Raiders took a 32-7 win over the Eagles… The Raiders scored the first time they had the ball as they drove 50 yards with Jackson Mahon carrying it from 1 yard out to make it 6-0 as the two-point conversion failed… Greenwood went 3 and out and after the punt the Raiders drove 43 yards for their second score with 6:54 left in the half… Again Mahon carried in from 1 yard out and Lindin Gault converted the 2-point PAT and the Raiders led 14-0 … The Raiders scored again with less than a minute left in the half when Zachary Miller carried it in from 5 yards out and the score stood 20-0 at the half… The Raiders’ first score of the second half came with 1:23 left on the clock in the third quarter when Mahon connected with Mark McGowan on an 11 scoring pass to make it 26-0 Raiders…. Zachary Miller closed out the Raider scoring early in the fourth quarter on an 8 yard run to make it 32-0… Greenwood avoided the shutout by scoring with 26.3 seconds left in game and getting the PAT to make the final 32-7… Again if you want to see the teams schedule and the result for the JV squad, click here.

Middle School Athletics:

  • FB: GCO 12 – HT 6 in OT… last night the Hickory Tavern Panthers traveled to Gray Court to take on their arch rivals the Gray Court-Owings Tigers… This was the second time the two teams met on the gridiron this season as they played a non-region contest at HT which the Panthers won 8-0… Well yesterday the Tigers turned the tables and took a 12-6 win in overtime… GCO scored first as Hunter Brewington connected with Caleb Franklin on a 15 yard scoring strike in the second quarter to put the Tigers up 6-0… The panthers tied the game as time was running out in the first half as Austin Roach hit Dale Hostetler on a scoring pass… Neither team scored in the second half so the teams went into overtime with GCO getting the ball first…The Tigers scored on the second play in OT as Isaiah Burnside carried it in from the 5… The panthers then got their crack at it but were not able to score which then led o a celebration by the Tigers.

Sports Report for Thursday, 10-26-2017

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Tennis: CHS 6 – Powdersville 1… I need to catch up with the Red Devil girls’ tennis team which was in action back on Tuesday but I just received the score of their match at Powdersville yesterday… The #3 seeded Red Devils traveled to Powdersville to take on the #1 seeded Patriots in second round action in the Class AAA playoffs and the ride back was a happy one as the Red Devils advanced to the third round by taking a 6-1 win… Elizabeth Jones, Mary Catherine Dailey, Gerri Hill, and Gracie Spangler all took wins in singles action… Jones and Dailey teamed up to form the #1 doubles team and defeat their opponents as did the #2 doubles team of Mary Grace Johnson and Aaliyah Johnston…. Middle School Athletics:

  • LMS 40 – Sanders 14… Yesterday at KC Hanna Stadium the Sanders Yellow Jackets and the LMS Tigers closed out their football season as they met for their annual battle for the mythical City Championship… It was close games at the half as the Tigers only led 14-6 but in the second half the Tigers broke the game open as they went on to take a 40-14 win… The Tigers scored on the first play of the game as Zy’Tavius Todd rambled down the left side for a 55 yard TD… The 2-point conversion was successful as James Rawl connected with Devon Redd to make it 8-0 with 7:26 left in the first quarter… On the third play of the Tigers next possession, sanders Ty Roberson had pick-six that was returned about 70 yards for the score… The extra point conversion failed and the score stood 8-6 Tigers with 3:27 left in the first quarter… Todd had another TD run just before the end of the quarter to make the score 14-6 which is where it stood at the half as neither team score in the second quarter..  The Tigers then went on the score 26 unanswered points in the second half before Sanders finally got on the board with 1:36 left in the game on a 70 yard run by Ty Roberson and the ensuing 2-point conversion made when Andrew Kuykendall connected with Vantavious Butler… In the second half Todd had a 20 yard TD run to give him 3 in the game… Rawl had 2 TD passes one to Devon Redd and the other to Waldrick Burnside… Jay Pulley closed out the scoring for the Tigers when he connected with Tre Massey for a 42 yard score… In addition to his pick-six, Roberson had another interception for the Yellow Jackets.

Pros:

  • World Series Game 2: Astros 7 – Dodgers 6 (11)… Well in case you did not stay up late enough to catch all 11 innings of game 2 of the World Series in LA, I’ll tell you that the Astros evened the series at one game apiece by taking a 7-6 win in 11 innings…  The two teams traded the lead several times and the Astros Marwin Gonzalez tied the game at 3-3 with a homer in the 9th inning to send it into extra innings… Both teams scored twice in the 10th inning and in the 11th the Astros’ George springer had a 2-run homer to give the Astros a 7-5 lead… The Dodgers then scored a run in the bottom of the 11th but the rally fell short as the Astros took the 7-6 win… For more details on the game, click here…. Pros:

  • World Series Game 1: LA 3 – Astros 1… Well if you went out for a nice leisurely supper last night just before game 1 of the World Series started, you might have been surprised to come home and find the game over because it took just 2:28 for the Dodgers to defeat the Astros 3-1 out in LA and that is the quickest series game since sometime back in the 90’s…  It was a pitching duel between 2 former Cy Young winners Houston’s Dallas Keuchel and the Astros Clayton Kershaw… Kershaw’s first pitch to the Dodgers in the bottom of the first was belted out of the park by Chris Taylor… The Astros tied the game on a solo homer in the 4th inning by Alex Bergman and then the Dodgers Justin Turner had a 2-run homer in the 6th inning to give the Dodgers all the runs they would need as their bullpen shut down the Astros after Kershaw left the game after 7 innings…. Sports Report for Monday, 10-2-2017

CHS:

  • Chapman 48 – Clinton 18…. On Homecoming Night last Friday night the Clinton Red Devils faced off against the state’s #1 ranked Chapman Panthers and while the final score was 48-18 the Red Devils did play the Panthers closer than the final score appears but mistakes in the second half proved to be costly for the Red Devils…Chapman led 6-0 at the end of the first quarter and Clinton tied the game 6-6 about midway through the second quarter… Both teams scored again in the second quarter to make it 13-12 Chapman with 1:34 left to play in the half… Chapman managed to score again just before the half to make it 20-13 going into the locker room at the half…Chapman had the first possession in the second half and scored to make it 27-12… Clinton answered with a 90 yard kickoff return by Tquan Cromer to make it 27-18… After that, the wheels came off the bus for the Red Devil offense as they turned the ball over three times (2 fumbles and an interception) in most cases giving Chapman a short field to work with as they fell by a final score of 48-18… Kris Holmes (126) and Mark Wise (113) both finished with over 100 yards and each scored a TD…. Clinton travels to Mid Carolina next Friday to take on the Rebels.

LDHS:

  • Hillcrest 39 – Laurens 6… The Laurens Raiders hosted the Hillcrest Rams last Friday night at KC Hanna stadium and the Rams put 39 unanswered points on the board in the first half of play and then went on to take a 39-6 win over the Raiders… To be honest the Rams dominated the line of scrimmage on both sides of the ball especially in the first half as the raiders seemed to have no answer… The Rams had 218 yards rushing to the Raiders 66 as the Rams seemed to be in backfield on many plays before the Raiders could get going… The Rams also had 253 yards of passing offense to the Raiders 51 as Ryan Campbell was often throwing on the run…. The Raiders scored in the fourth period when Will Tinsley returned a Ram punt to the Ram 27 and 3 plays later Duane Martin scored from 5 yards out… The 2-point conversion failed…. Laurens Academy:

  • Crusaders 64 – Eagles 63… The Laurens Academy Crusaders traveled down to Newberry Academy last Friday night to take on their arch rivals the Eagles… The bus ride back was most likely noisy as the Crusaders picked up their first win of the season by defeating the Eagles 64-63 in game where the Crusaders had to come from behind… The Crusaders did it their old fashion way with a passing attack in which Thomas Lowry went 29-47-1 for 451 yards and 8 TDS… He also had a rushing TD… Wil Tindal caught 5 of the TD passes… Kenny Langston led the defense with 26 tackles and Diamonte Grant had 2 of the 4 Crusader interceptions on the night… For more stats on the game, click on the following: Laurens+Acadmey+Stats+v.s.+Newberry+Academy… The Crusaders host Jeff Davis Academy for Homecoming this Friday night.
