Sports Report for Wednesday, 11-2-2016

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Tennis Host Woodruff Today… Yesterday I told you that back on Monday the Lady Red Devil team defeated Seneca 4-3 in second round action of the State AAA Playoffs… I also mentioned that the Red Devils would play today but I did not know the opponent or location… I can now tell you that Clinton will host region foe Woodruff today at 5 pm… Woodruff is a team they have beaten at least once this season (5-2) and let’s hope they can do it again… Go Big Red!!
  • Set Scores From Loss To Crescent Monday… Also yesterday I told you that the Red Devil volleyball team was eliminated from the playoffs Monday by Crescent hen the Tigers took a 3-0 win but I did not have any details… I can now report to you that the Tigers took the first set 25-15 and the Red Devils fought hard but lost the second set 25-22… The Tigers then completed the win with a 25-12 win… Congratulations to the team on a very good season.
  • JV FB: Clinton 33 – Woodruff 27… Most of you are aware that the Clinton Red Devils and the Woodruff Wolverines will get together at Wilder Stadium Friday night in a game that both school decided to delay one week… Well the JV teams went ahead and played last Thursday and I need to catch you on that game and it will be good news as Clinton took a 33-27 win… If you want to see more information about this contest, click here… After getting off to a slow start early in the season, the team finishes the season with a 2-game winning streak and 3-6 overall.

LDHS:

  • Recap of Last Week’s JV Game… Last Friday I mentioned that the Laurens Raider JV football team lost to Greenwood by a score of 40-0 but I did not have any details on the game… Earlier this week Coach Jawon Stephens provided the following recap and comments about the game… “Thursday night at J.W. Babb stadium was not a good night for the JV Raiders. Greenwood forced turnovers and converted the turnovers offensively into touchdowns. This combination helped Greenwood jump out to an early 14-0 lead. Greenwood would add two more scores in the second quarter, but the PAT attempts were blocked by Conner Owens. We were able to mount a good drive just before halftime. A mix of running and passing helped the offense get inside the 5 yard line. A Greenwood defender made a great play, stepping in front of a pass to end the drive in the end zone. Greenwood goes into halftime with a 26-0 lead. The guys came out and fought hard in the 3rd quarter. The score remained the same, but Greenwood was able to add two final scores in the 4th quarter to extend the lead to 40-0. This is not the way we envisioned the conclusion to our season, but this can be a learning situation and hopefully motivation as the team enters the off-season in preparation for their 2017 campaign.” My thanks to Coach Stephens for the information throughout the season.

Pro Sports

  • World Series: Cubs 9 – Indians 3… Well in case you did not stay up long enough to make it all the way to the end, I’ll tell you that there will be a game 7 in the World Series tonight because the Cubs fought off elimination by taking a 9-3 win over the Indians in Cleveland last night…. The Cubs outhit the Indians 13-6 and 3 of those were homeruns… The big blow came off the bat of Cubs shortstop Addison Russell as he had a grand slam in the third inning…For more information on this game, click here… Game 7 will be tonight in Cleveland and start at 8 pm and either the Cubs will win their first World Series title since 1908 or the Indians their first since 1948.

 LDHS:

  • Laurens 20 – Greenwood 10… If you were the Laurens Raider football team last Friday and you were hungry for a win and went to the local football restaurant you would have ordered a main course of cooked Eagles (for the second consecutive year) with a side of Hillcrest over Mauldin and for desert a Region 2-5A Championship and you probably would have felt very full and satisfied… Well the Raiders (and their fans) went home very full and satisfied as they defeated the Greenwood eagles 20-10 at KC Hanna Stadium and the Hillcrest Rams took a 31-13 win over Mauldin to make the Raiders Region 2-5A Champions… The Raiders took the opening kickoff and marched down the field 82 yards in 15 plays which was capped by Duane Martin scoring from 6 yards out and Devin Hubner adding the PAT to put the Raiders up 7-0… Greenwood came right back and scored on their first possession to make the score 7-7… Laurens went 3 and out on their next possession and Greenwood started a drive but just before the end of the first quarter they completed a pass but the Raiders forced a fumble recovered by Tyzay Hill to set the Raiders up at the Greenwood 47 yard line… Five plays later on a 3-10 situation, Ryan Campbell hit Braylen McBeth on a 37 yard TD pass… Hubner’s PAT was good and Laurens led 14-7 with 11:04 left in the half… The eagles responded by driving the Laurens 13 but the defense held on a third and 8 forcing the Eagles to settle for a 29 yard field goal to make the score 14-10 Raiders with 4:52 left in the half… The final score of the game came with 1:17 left in the half when Campbell threw his second TD pass of the night this one a 26 yard completion to Deonte Smith… The raiders defense kept the eagles pretty much in check the second half and the Raider offense did get down to the Greenwood 11 early in the final quarter where the drive stalled and they missed a 28 yard field goal… The Raiders also got the ball back with 9:12 left in the game and never gave the ball back to the Eagles as time expired with the Raiders on the Greenwood 1 foot line and the celebration started… The Raiders led in every statistical category and for game stats, click on the following: Greenwood-at-Laurens-Stats…. The Raiders will have a couple of Friday nights off as Hurricane Matthew has played havoc with lower state games and the playoffs will now start on Friday, November 18th when they will most likely host Woodmont..

Laurens Academy:

  • Northside Christian Academy 46 – L.A. 20… The Laurens Academy Crusaders closed out their regular season last Friday night at home with a 46-20 loss to Northside Christian Academy at Todd Kirk Field… Sorry but at this time I do not have any scoring details… The Crusaders finish the regular season 2-8 overall and await the playoff seeding to see where they will be playing this Friday.

Ware Shoals:

  • Dixie 23 Ware Shoals 21… Last Friday night there was Ware Shoals vs. Dixie in a game that you could bet your house on that the Hornets would win… The only question was would it be the Dixie Green Hornets or the Ware Shoals purple Hornets… It turned out to be the Green Hornets (minus Cato…LOL) as Dixie took a hard fought 23-21 win over Ware Shoals… If you would like more details on the game, click here… Ware Shoals finishes the season 3-7overall and 1-3 in region play and most likely will not make the playoffs unless it is as a “wild card” team while Dixie goes to 6-4 overall and 2-2 in region play and will make the playoffs.

Local Notes

CHS:

  • Richey’s Reception Worth a Look… Last Friday night in the game against Broome Koko Richey had a 66 yard TD reception where he was not the intended receiver… The inte4nded receiver was Dawson Green but Charlie Craven’s pass bounced off a defender and then was tipped by another defender into Richey’s hands as he sprinted downfield never breaking stride to make the catch and continue on for the score… For those of us old enough to remember Franco Harris’ “Immaculate Reception” it is very similar to that… Link to video is below

LDHS:

  • District Coaches Receive Certification… For those of you who listen to Raider football games here on Real Radio 860 WLBG, you heard Mr. Ed Murray the District 55 Athletic Director mention in a halftime interview a few weeks back that he wanted all head coaches to receive a Level 2 national certification from the National Federation of State High School Associations… This means that they must go beyond the basic Level 1 certification required of all coaches in the district… This means they must successfully complete 11 online courses in their “spare time”… Well five of the district coaches have led the way and reached that goal in a very short time… From LDHS they are Yoneko Allen, Chris Liner and Dale Nelson… Coach Matthew Campbell of LMS and Coach JR Reid of Sanders were the other two coaches…These coaches were recognized at the latest school board meeting… Congratulation to these coaches!
