Sports Report for Friday, 4-8-2016

PC Notes:

  • Baseball: PC 6 – USC Upstate 5… Back on Wednesday the PC baseball team traveled to Spartanburg to take on USC Upstate… PC scored one run in the first inning to take the early lead but by the time the ninth inning rolled around the Spartans held a 5-2 lead… PC then scored 4 runs in the ninth and then held the Spartans in the bottom of the inning to take a 6-5 comeback win… For more information on this game, click here… The Blue Hose will play host to the Winthrop Eagles this weekend with the first game today at 3 pm  then a 2 pm game tomorrow and a 1 pm game on Sunday.
  • Softball Splits Doubleheader with Gardner-Webb…  Also on Wednesday this week the PC softball team traveled to Gardner-Webb… The team came back home with a split as PC took the first game 4-0 but fell to the Running Bulldogs 6-3 in the second game… For more information on these games, click here… The team will also be hosting a weekend series as Liberty comes to town for a doubleheader starting at 1 pm tomorrow and 1 pm game on Sunday.
  • Other Sports… Now other sports are in season at PC and you can catch up with them and anything else related to PC athletics at www.gobluehose.com.

Pros:

  • Drive 4 – Asheville 3… The Greenville Drive kicked off their season last night with a 4-3 over the Ashville Tourist at Flour Field… The Drive used 7 hits to produce their 4 runs and put a pair of runs on the board in the bottom of the seventh inning then held the Tourist to take the win… For more information on this game, click here… The Drive continue their home stand throughout this weekend.
  • Braves… The Braves were off last night and will start a 3-game series with the Cardinals tonight at Turner Field. 

Laurens County Speedway Results from Last Saturday: Last Saturday was the first night of racing this season so let’s recap the top 3 finishers in each division.

  • Limited… Michael Smith finished first and the next two across the finish line were Billy Rushton & Frankie Coates.
  • Crates… Dale Timms won the pole here and led from start to finish… Stevie Bowie finished second and Goose Calvert third.
  • Hobby… Bobby Tucker won the main event in the Hobby Division, with Chris Lyons taking second and Lucas Motte finishing third… Tucker also led wire to wire but had to hold off Lyons at the end.
  • Stock Thunder… This is a new division this season and Tinker Roberts took the inaugural win… Mark Meadows was second & Eric Gossett third.
  • Stock 4… T.J. Baker took home the main event jumping out to the lead early… Tim Collins was the second driver to take the checkered flag and Joe Gibson the third,
  • FWD… After the second attempt to start the main event T.J. Hill took finished first… He did not take the lead until about half way through the race then fought off the challengers…  Landon Mack and defending series champion Andrew Patterson finished second and third in that order.

College Notes: The baseball schedules for Clemson and Carolina for this weekend are:

  • Clemson…  The 22-7 / 7-5 Tigers will be in Durham this weekend for a 3-game series with the Duke Blue Devils with the first game tonight at 6 pm the games on Saturday & Sunday starting at 1 pm.
  • South Carolina… The Gamecocks are 25-5 on the season & 7-2 in SEC play will be hosting the Volunteers of Tennessee… Tonight’s game is scheduled to start at 7 pm.. Tomorrow’s game should start at 4 pm and Sunday’s at 1:30… all three games are scheduled to be shown on the SEC Network I believe.

Sports Report for Thursday, 4-7-2016

Local Sports Results:

CHS:

  • Baseball: CHS 8 – Lancaster 1… The Red Devil varsity baseball team traveled to Lancaster yesterday to take on the Bruins in region action… The ride back was a happy one as the Red Devils took an 8-1 win running their season record to 14-1 and their region leading record to 7-0… The Red Devils got on the board first when they put 5 runs on the board and would need no more as Davis Cunningham picked up the complete game win scattering 7 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 8 and walking just 2…. In that big 2nd inning, the Red Devils used a walk, a double, two Bruin errors and a 2 RBI single by JP Duncan to produce those runs… The Red Devils put 2 more runs on the board in the fourth inning and one in the sixth inning… Lancaster’s only run came in the sixth inning but it was too little too late… Clinton had 9 hits in the game with Brayden Gibbs going 3-4 with a double and 2 RBIs… JP Duncan was close behind going 2-4 with a single and a triple and 2 RBIs also… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-4-6-CHS_BB_vs_Lancaster ….   • Nationals 3 – Braves 1…. The Atlanta Braves finished their short 2-game series with the Washington Nationals last night in Atlanta and the Braves fall to 0-2 on the young season as the Nationals took a 3-1 win…. The Braves jumped on top 1-0 in the fourth inning but could not hold the lead as the Nationals struck for 3 runs in the seventh inning and blanked the Braves the rest of the way… For more on this game, click here….. The Braves have tonight off before they start a series at The Ted with the Cardinals tomorrow night.
  • Greenville Drive… Well for you Greenville Drive fans the wait is over as they kick off their season tonight with a 7:05 game hosting the Ashville Tourist up at Flour Field… This is the first game of a 6 game home stand to start the season.

  • Baseball D-I USA Today Coaches’ Poll… The latest USA Toady Coaches Poll for D-I college baseball has Texas A&M holding down the top spot… Spots 2-5 are held by Miami (Fl.), Florida, Vanderbilt and Louisville… Spots 6-10 are held by South Carolina, Oregon State, Florida State, Texas Christian and UNC….   • Baseball: Greenville 5 – Laurens 1… The Laurens Raider baseball team hosted the Greenville Red Raider team in region action last night at Ed Prescott Field… Laurens scored 1 run in the bottom of the first inning but the wheels came of the Laurens bus in later innings as Greenville took a 5-1 win… Laurens got 3 of their 6 hits off Greenville pitcher Carson Spiers in the first inning with Thomas Jones scoring on an error by Greenville… After that the Laurens offense went cold with Graydon Hamby getting 2 of the raiders 6 hits… Greenville scored 1 run in the fifth inning and then 2 in the the sixth and seventh inning to take the win… Morgan French took the complete game loss giving up the 5 runs on 9 hits while striking out only 1 and walking 1… Uncharacteristically, Laurens also had 4 errors which helped Greenville… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-4-5_LDHS-BB_vs_Greenville  ….   • JV Baseball: Greenville 10 – Laurens 1…. In JV action prior to the varsity game, the Greenville Red Raiders took a 10-1 win over Laurens… The JV bats were cooler than the varsity as they managed only 2 hits with Devon Hubner and Peyton Nelson getting those 2 hits… According to the schedule I have, the JVS will be back in action today as they travel to Emerald for a 6 pm contest.

College Notes:

  • Connecticut Wins Women’s Championship… Last night the Lady Huskies became the first-ever Division I women’s team to win four consecutive championships with an 82-51 win over Syracuse… This was the 11th championship for the school putting them in a class by themselves and worthy of comparison with the UCLA basketball teams under the legendary coach John Wooden… Breanna Stewart once again garnered the Most Outstanding Player Award for the fourth time in her four year career… For more information on this game, click here.
  • Ronny Fisher Named Head Coach at Campbell…. Yesterday it was announced that the lady Blue Hose basketball team will be in need of a new head coach as Ronny Fisher accepted the same position at Campbell University in Buies Creek, NC… Coach Fisher was the sixth women’s basketball coach at PC and is second on the PC’s all-time list for wins with 97… Fisher was the head coach at PC for 8 years and was the Big South Coach of the Year in the 2012-13 season… For more information on this story, click here.

Sports Report for Tuesday, 4-5-2016

PC Notes:

  • Baseball: The PC baseball team was in action this past weekend up in Ashville taking on the UNC-Ashville Bulldogs in a 3-game series… In the first game on Friday the Bulldogs took a 7-4 win in spite of Weston Jackson going 2-3 in the game… On Saturday the Blue Hose rebounded to take a 13-8 win over the Bulldogs… Ryan Hicks led the Blue Hose going 3-4 with a pair of homeruns and a double…. In the rubber game of the series on Sunday, the Bulldogs took the series 2-1 with a one-sided 22-9 win over the Blue Hose… Weston Jackson again led the Blue Hose offense going 3-5 with a homerun…. To see more details on each of these games, click on their scores… The team will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to USC Upstate for a 6 pm contest.
  • Softball: The Lady Blue Hose softball team was also in action on Saturday and Sunday as they traveled to Buies Creek, NC to take on Campbell… On Saturday they played a doubleheader and PC took game one by a score of 7-5… Campbell rebounded in the second game and took the second game by a score of 2-0 in a game where PC managed only 1 hit to Campbell’s 4… For more information on these two games, click here… In the third and deciding game of the series on Sunday, PC took a 4-1 win to run their season record to 19-15 / 5-3…. For game details, click here…. The team will be back in action tomorrow as they travel to Boiling Springs, NC to take on the Running Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb in a doubleheader starting at 4 pm.

  • Softball: Strom Thurmond 16 – LDHS 3… Yesterday I told you about the Laurens Raider softball team and their participation in the Triple Crown Tournament down in Aiken on Saturday… I did not know the score of the last game played by the Lady Raiders in that tournament at that time but I do now… The Raiders fell to the Rebels of Strom Thurmond by a score of 16-3… Sorry no other details on this game… The team is now 9-9 / 4-2 on the season and returns to action next Monday when they travel to Hillcrest.

Pros:

  • Washington 4 – Braves 3 (10)… The Atlanta Braves opened their season yesterday in at Turner Field with a 4-3 loss to the Washington Nationals in 10 innings… Daniel Murphy doubled in the 10th inning for the Nationals driving in the go ahead run and he also homered earlier in the game… Click here for more information on the game… The Braves take the night off before finishing the short series with the Nationals on Thursday night..

College Notes:

  • Villanova 77 – UNC 74… Well if you are just coming out of a coma or back from the moon I’ll tell you that Villanova took a 77-74 win over North Carolina to win the NCAA Men’s D-I Basketball Championship last night…. The game was a decent one form a fan’s perspective with the underdog Wildcats leading most of the way… The Tarheels tied the game with 4.7 seconds left on Marcus Page’s 3-point shot but that was about 4.5 seconds too early as the Wildcat’s Kris Jenkins hit a 3-pointer of his own to give the Wildcats a 77-74 winand their first national championship since 1985… Yes I’m sure you all had Villanova winning it all on your brackets….. right.
  • Women’s Championship Tonight… Also a reminder that tonight #4 seeded Syracuse will be taking on UConn at 8:30 for the women’s D-I basketball championship…UConn will be their for the fourth consecutive year and if you remember it was Syracuse that eliminated the Lady Gamecocks a few days ago,,  That game starts at 8:30 and can be seen on ESPN I believe

Baseball…. The Raider baseball team finished their participation in a tournament in the Easley area over the weekend so let’s catch up with them….

  •  LDHS 2 – Mauldin 1… After being rained out on Thursday night the Raider baseball team returned to action on Friday night in tournament play up in Easley area… In the Friday’s game they took a 2-1 win over future regio0n opponent Mauldin… The Mavericks scored 1 in the bottom of the first inning but Jared Cevetko held them scoreless the rest of the way as Laurens scored single runs in the third & fourth innings to take the win… In the third GL Compton walked and later scored on a Mauldin error and in the fourth Morgan French led off with a single and later scored on a sacrifice by Layton Mahon… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-4-1_LDHS-BB_vs_Mauldin  ….   • LDHS 8 – Science Hill 4… On Saturday the Raiders made-up the rained out game from Thursday night as they took on the Science Hill Hill-Toppers out of Johnson City TN… Good news here as the Raiders took an 8-2 win… The Raiders trailed 4-2 going into the top of the fourth inning when they struck for 5 runs and added another in the fifth to take the win… Each team only had 6 hits and Graydon Hamby had 2 of the Raider’s hits… Nick Howell picked up the win in relief of Kiante Boyd… In the big fourth inning the Raiders got their 5 runs on 4 walks, an error, a RBI single by Hamby and a sacrifice fly by Hamby… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-4-2_LDHS-BB_vs_Science_Hill   ….   • Emerald 14 – LDHS 13… In their last game on Saturday the Raiders faced off against the Emerald Vikings a team that they had defeated 14-7 in their third game of the season… If you like a game with lots of runs scored, this one was for you as the teams combined to score 27 runs… The bad part of that is that Emerald had 14 of them and the Raiders 13…. The game went back and forth with Emerald having a big inning in the bottom of the fourth to go up 10-5… The Raiders chipped away at the Emerald lead and scored 5 in the top of the seventh inning to go up 13-12… However the Raiders could not hold the lead as the Vikings scored 2 runs in the bottom of the inning to take the win… The Raiders outhit the Vikings with 6 different Raiders getting 2 hits each… Thomas Jones had only 1 hit but it was a solo homer in the seventh inning…. Softball… The Lady Raider softball team had their games in the Triple Crown Tournament in Aiken rained out on Friday night so they wound up playing all their games on Saturday… Let’s catch up with them…

  • LDHS 9 – South Aiken 6….   • LDHS 6 – Fox Creek 5…. Later Saturday the Raiders made it three in a row as they took a 6-5 win over Fox Creek… The Raiders led 6-0 going into the bottom of the second inning when F.C. put 4 runs on the board but the Raiders held on to take the win… The Raiders had 10 hits with CJ Ginn leading the team with 3 hits…. Sports Report for Friday, 4-1-2016

PC Notes:

  • Baseball: The PC baseball team was in action last Tuesday and took a 6-5 win over Wofford up in Spartanburg in 10 innings… If you want more details on this game, click here….The team will be up in Ashville starting tonight for a 3 game series with UNC-Ashville this weekend.
  • Softball: The news is not quite as good where the PC softball team is concerned as they lost a pair of games on Tuesday to Western Carolina up in Cullowhee, NC… If you click here you will be carried to a page where you can get more details on these games…. The softball team will also be on the road this weekend as they to Buies Creek, NC to take on Campbell in a 3 game series starting tomorrow. 

Local Sports Results:
CHS & LDHS

  • Softball: CHS 7 – LDHS 4… Back on March 14th the Lady Raiders and the Lady Red Devil softball teams started a game at LDHS but a weather cell with lightning moved through the area and the game had to be suspended at the start of the bottom of the fourth inning with the Raiders leading 4-2 because lightning and aluminum bats don’t make a good combination… Well Clinton second baseman Kayleigh Pitts may have captured a little bit of that lightning in her bat and used it in the top of the seventh inning to blast a grand slam homerun lifting the Red Devils to a 7-4 win… Clinton opened the game back on the 14th scoring a run in the top of the first inning with Laurens answering and tying the game in the bottom of the first inning… The Raiders scored 3 runs in the bottom of the second inning on walk, two hits, a sacrifice and a Clinton error to go up 4-1 and Clinton added a run in the top of the fourth inning to make the score 4-2 which is where the score stood when the game was suspended… When the game restarted Elizabeth Aylesworth replaced Rachel Delio in the pitching circle for the Raiders but Katie Roland continued her duties as pitcher for the Red Devil… The game proceeded scoreless until the top of the seventh inning when after 1 out the Red Devils put together 3 singles to bring in a run… A walk then loaded the bases but the next batter popped up for the second out… That is when Pitts reached out and hit the second pitch she saw over the right-centerfield fence driving in what would prove to be the winning runs… The Raiders did not go quietly in the seventh as they did load the bases but could not get the clutch hit needed… The Red Devils got their 7 runs on 12 hits and with no Raider errors while Laurens produced their 4 runs on 8 hits and were aided by 3 Red Devil errors… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-31_SB-Clinton…. Click on the following for the game scorecard: 2016-3-31_SB-Clinton_Scorebook …  The two teams split their season series 1-1 as Laurens defeated Clinton 14-1 to open their season… Clinton improves to 6-12 on the season and is scheduled to host Lancaster tonight at 7 pm while Laurens falls to 6-7 and is scheduled to start participation in the Triple Crown Tournament this weekend with a pair of games tonight.

CHS:

  • Soccer: South Pointe 1 – CHS 0…. The Red Devil soccer team hosted the South Pointe Stallions yesterday and the Red Devils suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 loss to the Stallions… The match was a defensive struggle until late in the contest when Clinton accidently put the ball into their own net giving the Stallions the 1 point win… South Pointe took 18 shots on goal and Jack Harkins saved 10 of them… The Red Devils took 8 shots on goal… The Red Devils are now 4-9 (3-3) on the season and will be off until April 12th when they travel to Broome.

LDHS:

  • Track… Back on Wednesday the Raider track teams hosted a meet with Strom Thurmond… Good news as both the teams took wins… The girls won 57-45 while the boys took a 72-53 win… Now for more details on the meet as to which Raiders finished third or better, click on the following: 3-30-16_LDHS Track defeats Strom Thurmond

  • Baseball: LDHS 6 – Wren 0… The Laurens Raider baseball team was in action yesterday participating in a tournament up in Easley and they faced off against the Wren Cyclones in their first game… Good news for Raider fans as the team improved its record to 11-2 with a 6-0 win over the Hurricanes… The Raiders scored 1 run in the second and sixth inning and between that they scored two runs in the third and fourth inning… The Raiders pounded out 14 hits… Thomas Jones led the Raider attack going 4-5 driving in 1 run and scoring 2… Morgan French was close behind going 3-4 driving in 2 runs and scoring once…  French also picked up the complete win giving up only 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-30_LDHS-BB_vs_Wren ….   • Softball: CHS 13 – Whitmire 3 (5)… The only detail I have is that Kayleigh Pitts picked up the win for the Red Devils…
  • C Team Softball: CHS 12 – Whitmire 6… Again the only detail I have is that Kate Marshall got the win.

College Notes:

  • Niberts Honored by National Association of College Basketball Coaches… Most people in this area know Coach Gregg Nibert as the head coach of the PC Blue Hose men’s basketball team for the last 27 years… During that period he has experienced much success on the court with his teams but what some people do not know is that he and his wife Peggy have experienced a different kind of success off the court serving as foster parents for children suffering from the effects of abuse, neglect and substance abuse… For this and other reasons the Niberts will be honored with the Guardians of the Game Award on April 3 in Houston by the NABC… Now for much more about the Niberts and their work in this area click here…. Congratulations to Coach Nibert and his wife Peggy on this much deserved honor.

Local Sports Results:
CHS:

  • Golf: The Red Devil Golf team traveled to Woodruff yesterday for a 3-way match with Woodruff and Broome… Good news here as Clinton won with a score of 170 while Broome shot a 183 and Woodruff 186… William Lollis was match medalist with an even par 36… Other Clinton scores were: Karl Gustafson 41, Harrison Fischer 43 and Lawrence Coleman 50… The team will be back in action tomorrow as they host Union County
  • Soccer: CHS 3 – Union 1 (OT)… The Red Devil soccer team hosted the Union County Yellow jackets yesterday and good news here as the Red Devils took a 3-1 win in overtime… The Red Devils dominated possession on the field early and often Tuesday evening verses the Union County Yellow Jackets, but they were unable to find the back of the net until the 73rd minute when Brooks Threatt found Parker Duncan on a throw-in to tie the match up and eventually force overtime… During the overtime period, the Red Devils continued their dominance scoring two goals, one by Elvis Fitz from Parker Duncan and Brooks Threatt and finally on a penalty kick, which Duncan converted… Clinton took 27 shots on goal to Union’s 7 and Jack Harkins made 3 saves in goal for the Red Devils… Clinton’s record goes to 4-8 overall and 3-2 in region play… The Red Devils are back in action tomorrow as they play host to the South Pointe Stallions at 6:30 pm.
  • Softball: Union 3 – Clinton 0 … Yesterday the Lady Red Devil softball team hosted the lady Yellow Jackets of Union County High School… Union came into the game with only one loss on their season record and when they left they still had only one loss as they took a 3-0 win over the Lady Red Devils… As Coach Joseph Terry mentioned afterwards, Clinton just could not get the big hits needed when they did get runners on… Clinton managed only 3 hits off Union Starter Bailey Betenbaugh who struck out 12 while walking only 2….Cassie Nichols, Molly Scarborough & Shauna Goforth had the hits according to the Union scorekeeper… To see Unions version of the box score, click on the following: 2016-3-29_CHS-SB_ Union..   The team goes to 4-12 on the season on 0-6 in region play and will host Whitmire today at 6:00 pm.

Laurens Academy:

  • Baseball: Spartanburg Christian Academy 12 – Crusaders 11… The L.A. Crusaders traveled to Spartanburg yesterday to take on the Spartanburg Christian Academy Warriors and if you like a lot of runs in a game this was your game as the two teams combined to score 23 runs… The bad news is that the Warriors scored 12 of them handing the Crusaders a 12-11 loss… The Warriors held a 10-1 lead going into the sixth inning when the Crusaders started their comeback scoring 3 runs to make it 10-4… The Crusaders added 7 big runs in the top of the seventh inning to go up 11-10 but could not hold it as the Warriors scored 2 in the bottom of the seventh to take the win… The Crusaders got their 11 runs on 10 hits and were aided by 6 Warrior errors… The Warriors picked up their 12 runs on 15 hits and were aided by 4 Crusader errors… Three different Crusaders each had 2 hits to lead the team and they were Will Price, Cade Robertson & and Ryan Holmes… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-29_BB-Spt_Christ_Acd …. PC Notes:

  • Baseball: The Blue Hose baseball team opened Big South play this past weekend as they traveled to Boiling Springs, NC to take on the Running Bulldogs of Gardner-Webb… The Bulldogs won Thursday’s game 14-0 but PC rebounded to take Friday’s game 3-0… In the rubber game of the series, G.W. won 3-1…For more information on these games, click on their scores… The team will be back in action tonight as they travel to Spartanburg to take on the Wofford Terriers at 6 pm.
  • Softball: The softball team was idle this past weekend but that ends today as they travel to Cullowhee, NC to take on Western Carolina in a doubleheader starting at 3 pm.

  • Baseball: Hanna 3 – Raiders 2… The Raider baseball team traveled to Anderson last night to take on the TL Hanna Yellow jackets in Region 1-4A action… The Raiders got on the board first scoring 1 run in the top of the first inning but Hanna took the lead in the bottom of the second scoring 3 runs… The Raiders added another run in the top of the fifth but could get no closer as Hanna handed the Raiders their fist region loss by a score of 3-2… In each of the two innings that Laurens scored, Thomas Jones singled and then later scored when Graydon Hamby drove him in with a hit… Hanna was able to get only 3 hits of Ethan Jones who pitched the entire game for the Raiders unfortunately they all came in the second inning where along with a walk and a sacrifice the Yellow Jackets scored their 3 runs… The Raiders had only six hits and Hamby led the team with 3 of them… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-28_LDHS-BB_vs_Hanna  ….   • Softball: Raiders 11 – Westside 2… The Lady Raider softball team hosted the Lady Rams of Westside last night hoping to avenge a 5-3 loss to the Rams earlier in the month… The Rams jumped on top 2-0 in the first inning thanks to a 2-run homer by Caitlyn Puckhaber so that seemed to be an uphill task for the Raiders… However the Raiders sent 13 players to the plate in the second inning scoring 8 runs and then went on to take a 11-2 win running the Raiders record to 6-6 on the season and 4-2 in region play and handing Westside their first region loss of the season. Elizabeth Aylesworth was the starting pitcher for the Raiders but did not make it out of the first inning… Rachel Delio came in and finished the game allowing no further runs or hits and striking out 7 while walking 4… The Raider offense produced 10 hits and was aided by 5 Ram errors… Mattie Cantrell, CJ Ginn and Makaila Irby each had 2 hits for the Raiders… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-28_LDHS-SB-Westside   ….   • Baseball: Laurens 3 – Woodmont 0… Last Friday night the Laurens Raider baseball team hosted the Woodmont Wildcats in region baseball action… Good news as the Raiders improved their season record to 10-1 and their region record to 6-0 with a 3-0 win over the Wildcats… Laurens scored two runs in the third inning on 3 hits by Ethan Jones, Thomas Jones and Graydon Hamby… Hamby also led off the sixth inning with a single and later scored the Raiders last on a wild pitch… Jared Cevetko picked up the complete game win giving up just 3 hits while striking out 9 and walking none… Woodmont loaded the bases in the seventh inning with one out but the game ended on a double play when the Raider’s shortstop Ethan Jones made a great play to his left to stop a Wildcat potential hit and then complete the double play… The Raiders had 7 hits in the game with Hamby’s two being the most of any Raider… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-25_LDHS-BB_vs_Woodmont   ….   • Baseball: CHS 3 – Broome 0… The Red Devil baseball team traveled to Spartanburg to take on the Broome Centurions and ran their season record to 13-0 (6-0) as they defeated the Centurions 3-0… The game started out as a pitcher’s duel as the game was 1-0 Red Devils going into the sixth inning… The Red Devils got one run in the second when Tristan Smaltz led the inning off drawing a walk and was later driven in by an RBI single off the bat of Brayden Gibbs… The Red Devils scored two insurance runs in the sixth inning when both Charlie Craven & Tristan Smaltz led off the inning drawing back to back walks… Craven later scored on a passed ball and Smaltz on a RBI single by Aaron Copeland… Clinton had 8 hits in the game with Gibbs going 3-4 to lead the team… Davis Cunningham picked up the complete game win giving up 3 hits while striking out 12 and walking just one… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-25-CHS_BB_vs_Broome  ….   • Softball: Broome 10 – CHS 3… Now the news is not as good where the Lady Red Devil softball team is concerned as they lost to Broome @ CHS by a score of 10-3… Broome got on the board first scoring 1 run in the top of the second inning but Clinton took the lead scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the third inning… Elizabeth Childress led the inning off with a single, stole second then advanced to third when Hunter Benson reached on an error advancing all the way to second… Cassie Nichols then drove in both runners… Broome got those 2 runs back in the top of the fourth to take a 3-1 lead… Clinton’s final run came in the bottom of the fourth when Kalen Richardson reached on an error and later scored on another Broome error… Broome then went on to score 4 in the fifth, 2 in the sixth and 1 in the seventh to take the win… The information I have given you comes from the Broom scorer and to see their version of the box score, click on the following: 2016-3-25_CHS-SB_ Broome
  • Lacrosse: Eastside 14 – CHS 6… The news is also not as good in lacrosse action where Eastside took an 8-5 lead at the half then went on to take a 14-6 win over the Red Devils… Scoring for Clinton were Alexis Pagano, Isabel Worley, Stephanie Braswell and Alissa Butler.
  • Soccer: Lancaster 5 – CHS 0… The CHS soccer team also hosted the Lancaster Stallions last Friday and unfortunately the Red Devils fell by a score of 5-0…. The Bruins took a 3-0 lead into half time and never looked back as they took a commanding lead in Region III-AAA soccer… The Red Devils took 4 shots on goal to Lancaster’s 20 and Jack Harkins was able to save 9 of them in goal… Clinton will be back in action on tomorrow as they take on the Union County Yellow Jackets at 6:30 pm.

PC Notes:

  • Baseball… The PC baseball team has already played 2 games this week as they traveled to Clemson on Tuesday and lost to the Tigers by a score of 8-4… For more information on that game, click here… The Blue Hose started a 3-game series up in Boiling Springs, NC with Gardner-Webb and lost the first game by a score of 14-0… For more information on that game, click here…. They will finish the series with games today and tomorrow.
  • Softball… The Lady Blue Hose softball team hosted Winthrop in a doubleheader in Clinton on Wednesday and good news here as they on both game the first by a score of 2-0 and the second one by a score of 3-2….Click here for links to more information on these two wins.

  • Golf: The CHS golf team traveled up to Spartanburg yesterday and was involved in a 3 way match with Broome and Union County… The Red Devils prevailed coming in first place as the team shot a 172 while Broome shot a 176 and Union 180… Harrison Fisher was match medalist shooting a 1 under par 36… Karl Gustafson shot a 41, William Lollis 44 and Lawrence Coleman 51.
  • Soccer: CHS 4 – Ware Shoals 1… Thursday evening the Red Devils got off to a sluggish start in their match with the Ware Shoals Hornets, but were able to mount a late surge to take a 4-1 victory in their non region matchup… Scoring for the Red Devils were Kris Evans-Williams, Gavin Kiley and two by Parker Duncan… Jack Harkins saved 4 of the Hornets 7 shots on goal… The Red Devils are now 3-7 on the season.
  • Tennis: CHS 7 – South Pointe 0… Yesterday the CHS tennis team traveled to Rock Hill to take on the South Pointe Stallions… The Red Devils proved to be pretty good bronco busters as they took a 7-0 win to run their season record to 7-1 (5-0)… Isaac MacMillan, Robert Powell, Ike Waldron, Tyler Trevino & Alexander Windsor all took wins in singles action… Bothe the #1 doubles team of MacMillan & Powell and the #2 doubles team of Bowen Tiller & Zack Bedenbaugh took easy wins.
  • Baseball: CHS 8 – Abbeville 2… The Red Devil baseball team continued its winning ways yesterday as they defeated the Abbeville Panthers 8-2 in Abbeville… Clinton struck for 3 runs in the third, 4 in the fifth and 1 in the 7th behind a 10 hit attack… Aaron Copeland and Brayden Gibbs led the Clinton offense with 2 hits and scoring a run each… Jeremy Simmons picked up the win pitching 6 innings giving up the 2 unearned runs on 2 hits while striking out 3 and walking 2… Aaron Copeland finished the game striking out 2… The team host Broome tonight at The Sponge.

Laurens Academy: The Laurens Academy baseball hosted the Wardlaw Patriots in a doubleheader yesterday at the Academy.

  • Baseball: Crusaders 8 – Patriots 1… In the first game the Crusaders were the visiting team on the scoreboard but that did not matter as they took and 8-1 win over the Patriots… Wardlaw got their only run in the bottom of the first inning but the Crusaders responded by scoring 3 runs in the top of the second… They added another 3 spot in the fourth and a pair of runs in the fifth to take the win… The Crusaders had only 7 hits in the game while the Patriots managed just 2 hits off Will Price who went the distance… Josh Urwick went 2-3 to lead the Crusaders at the plate.
  • Baseball: Crusaders 8 – Patriots 1… In the second The Crusader baseball team improved its record to 8-4 as again they took an 8-1 win over the Patriots… Once again the Patriots got on the board first scoring their only run in the top of the third inning but the lead did not last long as the Crusaders responded with 4 runs in the bottom of the inning and 4 in the fourth to take the win… The Crusader offense produced 8 hits and Will Price led the team with 2 of them… Nick Johnson got the start on the mound and gave up the 1 earned run on 3 hits while striking out 8 and walking 2 with Noah Stribling finishing the 5 inning game on the mound.

  • Tennis: Easley 7 – LDHS 0… I need to catch up on a tennis score from Tuesday that I just received yesterday morning… The score is not what I would like to report as the Green Wave took a 7-0 win.
  • Softball: LDHS 5 – Greenville 0… The Lad Raider softball team was in action last night as they hosted the Lady Red Raiders of Greenville High… Laurens made the best of their seven hits as they defeated Greenville 5-0… The Raiders jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first and then added single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings… Cassie Plaia and Baylee Bragg both had two hits each to lead Laurens but one of Plaia’s was an inside the park homerun… She hit a line drive into the left field corner and turned on the after burners to make it home before the throw… Elizabeth Aylesworth picked up the win pitching the first 5 innings with Rachel Delio completing the game… The Raiders are now 5-6 overall and 3-2 in region play… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-22_LDHS-SB-Greenville  ….   • JV softball: CHS 15 – S.P. 2… sorry no other details.
  • Softball: South Pointe 5 – CHS 3… Also catching up on Lady Red Devil softball from Tuesday night where both the JV & varsity traveled to south Pointe to take on the Lady Stallions… The varsity team lost by a score of 5-3 despite a stellar night at the plate by Cassie Nichols who went 4-4 with two singles, a double and a homerun…. Now I unofficially heard that that the team defeated Abbeville last night 9-6 but I need to confirm that.
  • Tennis: CHS 7 – Union County 0… Back on Tuesday the Red Devil tennis team improved their record to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in region action when they took a 7-0 win over Union County at the CHS tennis courts… Isaac MacMillan, Robert Powell, Ike Waldron, Tyler Trevino & Alexander Windsor all took wins in singles action… Bothe the #1 doubles team of MacMillan & Powell and the #2 doubles team of Bowen Tiller & Zack Bedenbaugh took easy wins… The team will be back in action today as the travel to South Pointe.
  • Golf: CHS 177 – Newberry 181… Catching up with golf also from Tuesday the Red Devils took a 177-181 win over the Newberry Bulldogs in Newberry… The match medalist was Harrison Fisher shooting an even par 36.. Karl Gustafson shot a 41, William Lollis 42 and Blaine Crisp 58.
  • Soccer: CHS 4 – Chester 1… Now one last score to catch up on from Tuesday involving the Red Devils and that is that the soccer team picked up their second win of the season as they defeated Chester 4-1 at Chester… The Red Devils take an early lead against Chester and do not look back..Elvis Fitz tallied 2 goals and Parker Duncan added a penalty kick in the first half to take a 3-1 halftime lead… Gavin Kiley added a goal in the 65th minute to score the final goal of the match… The Red Devils defense was sound throughout the match only allowing Chester 6 shots in the match with goalkeeper Jack Harkins having one save… The Red Devils are back in action at home today against non region opponent Ware Shoals.

  • Baseball: LDHS 7 – Woodmont 6… The Raider baseball team traveled to Woodmont yesterday to take on the Wildcats… The Raider offense gathered only 6 hits but it was enough to produce 7 runs as the Raiders defeated the Wildcats 7-6… Woodmont jumped on top early scoring 2 in the bottom of the second inning but the Raiders struck for 6 runs in the fourth inning and then held on to take the win… The raiders got their 6 runs in the fourth on 4 hits, 2 walks and a hit batter… Thomas Jones led the Raider attack going 2-3 but and Layton Mahon and Graydon Hamby each had 2 RBIs… Ethan Jones got the start going 5 innings but Morgan French picked up the win in relief… The Raiders go to 9-1 (5-0) on the season and will host Woodmont Friday night in a game that can be heard here on Real Radio 860 WLBG starting about 7:30.
  • Softball: Easley 11 – LDHS 8… The Lady Raider softball team continue to struggle as they traveled to Easley and lost by a score of 11-8 to the Green Wave… The Green Wave scored 2 in the first inning and the raiders just could not get the key hit at the right time… To their credit they never gave uo as evidenced by the fact they scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th inning… The Raiders did manage 11 hits to easley’s 12 with four different Raiders having 2 hits each… The team will play host to the Greenville Red Raiders today in a 6:30 pm contest that can be heard here on Real radio 860 WLBG and streaming live on the internet at www.wlbg.com

CHS:

  • Baseball: CHS 4 – South Pointe 0… The Red Devil baseball team ran its record to 11-1 (5-0) last night as they defeated the South Pointe Stallions at The Sponge… The Red Devils scored one run in the in the third inning and 3 runs in the fourth and that would be all they needed as Tristan Smaltz took the complete game win giving up only 4 hits while striking out six and walking one… The Red Devils had had just 7 hits with JP Duncan going 2-3 with 3 RBIs to lead the Red Devils… The team will travel to Abbeville tomorrow.

Laurens Academy: The Baseball and softball teams traveled to WW King to take on the Knights

  • Softball: WW King 11 – LA 0…. The Lady Crusader softball team had a tough time last night as they lost to the Lady Knights by a score of 11-0… The Crusaders offense struggled as they managed only 5 hits while the Knights got their runs on 9 hits… Five different players had 1 hit each for the Crusaders…
  • Baseball: LA 14 – WW King 0… The baseball game was a complete reversal of the softball game as the Crusaders took a 14-0 win over the Knights… The Crusaders pounded out 13 hits and were aided by 2 Knight errors… Ryan Sneed led the offense going 3-3 on the night… Three other Crusaders had 2 hits each and one of those players was Nick Johnson who had a 2-run homer in the second inning… Daniel Black took the completer game win giving up only 4 hits while striking out 5 and walking 1… The Crusaders are now 6-3 on the season and the teams will host Wardlaw tomorrow.

Sports Report for Tuesday, 3-22-2016

PC Notes:

  • Baseball: The Blue Hose baseball team was in action this past weekend down in Charleston as they took on the Citadel Bulldogs… The Bulldogs took a 2-1 win in the game Friday afternoon in a pitcher’s duel. (For more information, click here)… The Blue Hose rebounded on Saturday to take a 7-6 win (Click here for more information)… Then in the rubber game of the 3-game series on Sunday, the Citadel took a 7-2 win ( Click here for more information)…  The team is now 11-8 on the season and will travel to Clemson this afternoon for a 6 pm contest with the Tigers.
  • Softball: The PC softball team started a 3 game series with Coastal Carolina on Sunday… The teams played a doubleheader Sunday and in the first game, Coastal took a 9-4 win…. PC rebounded in the second game to take a 9-1 win in game 2 on Sunday.   • Softball… I still have not received the official results on the how the Lady Raider softball team did last weekend in the tournament at Byrnes but I have heard unofficially they lost all but 1 game… I’ll continue to try to get that information.

  • Baseball: CHS 6 – Pendleton 5 (11)… The Red Devil baseball team traveled to Pendleton yesterday to take on the Bulldogs and good news as the Red Devils took a 6-5 win in 11 innings… Aaron Copeland scored the winning run in the 11th inning on an error after reaching base on a walk earlier… The Red Devils had to come from behind and score 2 runs in the seventh inning to send the game into extra innings… Chandler Todd led the Red Devil offense getting 3 of their 8 hits one of which was a solo homer in the first inning… Davis Cunningham also had two hits…Jeremy Simmons got the win pitching 1⅔ innings and Taylor Bailey pitched 6 ⅓ scoreless innings….   • Softball… I now have the softball results from 1st Annual Premier Driving School Invitational this past Friday & Saturday at CHS… On Friday, the Lady Red Devils lost to Saluda 12-2… On Saturday they rebounded to beat TL Hanna 10-5 in the first game of the day… Later they defeated Spartanburg 16-1 but lost to Saluda in the championship game 10-2… The team will return to action today as they travel to South Pointe for a JV – varsity doubleheader.

The Laurens Raiders traveled up Hwy 14 last Friday night to take on the Hillcrest Rams in baseball action for the second time last week… And for the second time last week they took a 1-run win over the Rams this time by a score of 2-1… The Rams got on the board first scoring 1 unearned run in the first inning but that would be all they got as Morgan French picked up the complete game win giving up only 4 hits while striking out 3 and walking 4… The Raiders only had 7 hits themselves but the big blow came in the fifth inning when Layton Mahon singled and then two batters later Kendevon Stenhouse hit his first homerun of the season over the left field fence… Jalen Bragg and Graydon Hamby both had 2 hits apiece… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-18_LDHS-BB_vs_Hillcrest. …. The Red Devil soccer team picked up its first win of the season Friday as they defeated Broome 6-0… Clinton started the match off with a goal in the 7th minute from Parker Duncan… The score remained 1-0 until, in the 27th minute when Brooks Threatt put a ball in the back of the net following a corner kick… Shortly after taking a 2-0 lead, Elvis Fits scored two goals giving the Red Devils a 4-0 half time lead… Duncan and Fitz added a goal each in the second half to provide a comfortable lead for the remain of the match… The Red Devils’ defense played solidly throughout the match only allowing 7 shots while Jack Harkins made 4 saves… Record: 1-7 (1-1).

  • Baseball: Greenwood Christian 8 – Crusaders 6… The Laurens Academy Crusaders were also in action last Friday night as they hosted the Greenwood Christian hawks… The Crusaders had a 2-1 lead going into the top of the fourth inning when the hawks struck for 6 runs and then went on to take an 8-6 win over the Crusaders… In that critical inning the Hawks got their 6 runs on only 4 hits, a hit batter, a walk and a couple of Crusader miscues… To their credit, the crusaders came right back and scored 4 in the bottom of the fourth inning but could get no closer… The Crusaders managed only 6 hit on the night with Nick Johnson getting 2 of them… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-18_BB-Gwd-Christ  …. Sports Report for Friday, 3-18-2016

PC Notes:

  • Baseball… The PC baseball team had two mid-week games and on Tuesday they took a 15-6 win over NC Central at home… For more information on that game, click here… They were right back in action Wednesday as the hosted the Wofford Terriers… The news is not as good here as Wofford won 8-4… That drops PC to 10-6 on the season… For more information on this game, click here… The Blue Hose start a 3-game series in Charleston with the Citadel today at 5 pm.
  • Softball… The lady Blue Hose softball team hosted NC Central in a doubleheader on Wednesday… Good news here as PC won the first game 9-1 and the second one 8-2… For more information on these games, click here…. The team is now 14-10 on the season and will host Coastal Carolina this weekend with 2 games tomorrow and one on Sunday.

CHS @ LDHS Baseball: CHS2 – LDHS 1… Last night the Red Devils and the Raiders finished the game that started Monday at Ed Prescott Field that was suspended because of lightning in the area… When the final our was recorded, the Red Devils handed the Raiders their first loss of the season with a 2-1 Clinton win… The game resumed in the top of 3rd Dakota Webb on first base having been hit by a pitch just before the game was suspended on Monday… Two singles loaded the bases and then Davis Cunningham was hit by a pitch forcing in Webb with the game’s first run… Thomas Jones tied the game on a solo homer to left field that just made it over the fence and the glove of Tristan Smaltz in left field… The Red Devils regained the lead in the top of the fifth inning when Chandler Todd just cleared the fence and the glove of Kendevon Stenhouse in right field… The Red Devils then held the Raiders scoreless the rest of the way to take the win… According to the Raiders official stats, the Red Devils had only 3 hits in the game with 3 different players collecting those hits.., The Raiders had had 6 hits with Morgan French and Ethan Jones each recording 2 hits each… Jared Cevetko had the complete game loss for the Raiders striking out 8 and walking 3… Jeremy Simmons started for the Red Devils and lasted 3 2/3 innings before Taylor Bailey came in and picked up the win in relief pitching the rest of the game except for the last out which Aaron Copeland recorded… Laurens is now 7-1 on the season and will be at Hillcrest tonight while Clinton goes to 8-1 and will be at Union County tonight… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-17_LDHS-BB_vs_Clinton  ….   • Tennis: CHS 7 – Lancaster 0… The Red Devil tennis team was in action yesterday and they defeated Lancaster 7-0… Taking wins in singles action were Isaac MacMillan, Ike Waldron, Tyler Trevino, Alexander Winsor and Bowen Tiller… The # 1 doubles team of MacMillan and Waldron also picked up an easy win while the #2 doubles team of Daniel Moore & Zach Bedenbaugh picked up a 3 set win… The team will be in action Monday as they host St. Josephs.

Laurens Academy:

  • Softball: Ware Shoals 23 – LA 3…Lady Crusaders fall at home 23-3 to Ware Shoals…. Sorry no other details… They will be on the road Tuesday vs. WW King with a 5:00 first pitch.
  • Baseball: LA 10 – Oakbrook Prep 3… Varsity Baseball defeated Oakbrook 10-3. Sorry no other details… Today they will tangle with Greenwood Christian at LA… MS will play at 5 and varsity at 7:00. 5-1

LDHS:

  • Tennis: Greenville 7 – LDHS 0… On Tuesday night the Laurens Raider tennis team hosted the Greenville Red Raiders at the Laurens City Courts and you could argue that Laurens was just too nice a host as Greenville took a 7-0 win… Unfortunately the match was pretty one sided as Laurens managed to pick up on seven games in the loss… Coach Corley still saw progress in his team and to read his comments and complete details on the match, click on the following: Greenville_3-15-16

CHS:

  • C team Softball: CHS 12 – Chapman 2… Well I do have one score from CHS last night and that is a C-team softball score…The team traveled to Chapman and the ride back was a fun one as they defeated Chapman 12-2… Sorry no other details.
  • Soccer: South Pointe 3 – CHS 1… Now catching up with Red Devil soccer, back on Tuesday the team traveled to Rock Hill to take on the South Pointe Stallions… The Stallions took a 1-0 lead at the half and then scored two more goals in the second half to defeat Clinton 3-0… The Stallions took 18 shots on goal to Clintons 5 and Jack Harkins was able to get 15 saves in goal… Coach Sean Vick commented “It was a tale of two halves for the varsity soccer team in Rock Hill Tuesday night as they took on South Pointe. South Pointe and Clinton traded possession throughout the first half with the Stallions getting a goal off a deflection with time running down in the first frame. The second half was a different story. The Red Devils were forced to play with ten men and South Pointe took advantage of the situation by increasing the pressure. South Pointe added two more goals to get their first region victory of the season.”… The Red Devils fall to 0-7 (0-1) on the season and will be back in action tomorrow when they host Broome in a JV / Varsity doubleheader.
  • Tennis: CHS 6 – Blue Ridge 1… Now also back on Tuesday the Red Devil tennis team hosted the Boiling Springs Bulldogs and the Red Devil rackets had little trouble handling the Bulldogs as Clinton took a 6-1 win… Isaac MacMillan, Ike Waldron, Tyler Trevino and Alexander Windsor all took wins in singles action… MacMillan and Waldron teamed up as the #1 doubles team and they took an easy victory but the #2 doubles team of Daniel Moore and Zach Bedenbaugh had to struggle a little but did pull out the win… The team improves to 3-1 (2-0) on the season and will be back in action today as they travel to Lancaster.

  • Softball: LDHS 14 – Greenville 4 (5)… The Lady Raider softball team traveled to Greenville last night to take on the Lady Red Raiders of Greenville HS… Laurens broke open a 3-3 tie in the top of the fourth inning scoring 11 runs and then going on to take a 14-4 win in 5 innings… In the decisive fourth inning, Laurens sent 16 batters to the plate with all but two of the Raiders getting a hit in the inning and were aided by a couple of Greenville errors and hit batters… Laurens had 12 hits on the night with Cassie Plaia going 3-3 scoring 3 times and driving in 1… Bailey Gibbs, CJ Ginn, Makaila Irby & Elisabeth Aylesworth each had 2 hits…. The raider baseball team was also in action last night as they hosted the rams of Hillcrest… It turned out to be a pitchers battle between the Rams’ Cole Phillips and the Raiders Ethan Jones but in the end the Raiders prevailed by a 1-0 score… The raiders had only 2 hits on the night and their run came in the third inning when GL Compton lead off with a walk… Phillips tried to pick him off at first base but his throw was wide and Compton scampered to third… The Rams first baseman then had an errant throw getting the ball back into the infield allowing Compton to score… The Rams had six hits and threatened in the fourth inning but the tying run was gunned down at the plate on a great throw from Layton Mahon in left field to home to nail the runner… Morgan French and Jared Cevetko had the Raider hits… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-15_LDHS-BB_vs_Hillcrest.   ….   • Baseball: LA 4 – Richard Winn 2… The Laurens Academy Crusader baseball team hosted Richard Winn last night in their region home opener… Good news to report here as the Crusaders took a 4-2 win to run their record to 4-1 (1-0) on the season… The Crusaders scored single runs in the first, second, third and fifth innings while allowing RW single runs in the second and third innings… The Crusader had 6 hits to RW’s 5 and Will Price had two of the Crusader hits one of which was a solo homer in the third inning..,. Sports Report for Tuesday, 3-15-2016

PC Notes:

  • Women’s basketball: UNC-A 65 – PC 55… The Lady Blue Hose basketball team concluded their season last Saturday with a 65-55 loss to the top ranked Lady Bulldogs of UNC-Ashville… The game was actually closer than the final score might indicate because the Blue Hose just would not go away and kept clawing their way back before falling by 10… The team finished with an 18-13 record on the season and UNC-A went on to win the Big South Championship defeating Liberty 64-62 I 2 OTs)… For more on this game, click here.
  • Baseball… The PC baseball team improved its season record to 9-5 over the weekend as they won 2 of 3 games in the Perfect game Spring Swing Tournament in Emerson, Ga… On Friday they lost to Bowing Green by a score of 6-1 but rebounded to take an 11-1 win over Nebraska-Omaha on Saturday and a 6-5 win over Bowling Green on Sunday… For more information on these games, click here… Now you will have a chance to catch PC at home today as they host N.C. Central at 3 pm and again tomorrow as they host Wofford in another 3 pm contest.
  • Softball… The PC softball team was also in action this weekend as they played 4 games in the UNC Wilmington Round Robin Tournament… Saturday morning they defeated the host UNC-W 4-0 and then Saturday afternoon they defeated UNC-Greensboro 3-0… The team’s fortunes turned on Sunday as they lost to UNC-G 1-0 and to the host UNC-W 10-3… For more information on these contests, click here…. The team returns to action tomorrow as they host NC Central in a double header starting at 2 pm.

Local Sports Results:
Weather Takes Toll on Clinton vs. Laurens Varsity Games… The bad weather that moved through the area caused the suspension or delay of the varsity softball and baseball games between the Raiders and the Red Devils at LDHS… The softball game made into the bottom of the 3rd inning before lightning in the area shut it down… The Raiders were leading 4-2 in this game…. The baseball game was scoreless in the third when it was stopped… Now the baseball game is now scheduled to be played at 7 pm this Thursday and I have heard they are going to restart (not resume) the game at 7 pm… We will try to bring you that game here on Real Radio 860 WLBG… The date for making up the softball game was NOT set by the coaches last night… They will have to look at their respective schedules and will let me know when they set the date.

 LDHS:

  • Tennis… Now catching up on boys’ tennis at LDHS, the Raider tennis team posted a 1-2 record in the first week of boys’ tennis, taking a 6-1 win from Westside but losing 0-7 to both Greenwood and Hanna…. CHS:

  • Tennis: CHS 7 – Broome 0… Also catching up on Red Devil tennis, last Thursday the Red Devil tennis team traveled to Broome and the ride back was most likely a pleasant one as Clinton defeated Broome 7-0… Isaac MacMillan, Robert Powell, Ike Waldron, Tyler Trevino and Alexander Windsor all took wins in singles action… The #1 doubles team composed of MacMillan & Powell as well as the #2 doubles team Bowen Tiller and Zach Bedenbaugh also took wins… The team’s record is now 2-1 on the season and 2-0 in region play.. The tem is scheduled to host Blue Ridge today at 5 pm.

  • Softball: Westside 5 – LDHS 3… The Lady Raider softball team traveled to Anderson last Friday night to take on the Lady Rams of Westside and the ride home was not as enjoyable as it might have been as the Raiders lost 5-3… Both teams scored a single run in the first inning and Laurens went up 2-1 in the third but Westside came back to take the win and hand the Lady Raiders their first loss of the season… Bailey Gibbs went 3-4 with 2 doubles and had half of the Raiders 6 hits on the night… Elizabeth Aylesworth took the loss going 5⅓ innings… Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-11_SB-Westside ….   • Baseball: LDHS 13 – Westside 3 (5)… Now it is better news where the Raider baseball team is concerned because the Raiders defeated Westside 13-3 in 5 innings at Ed Prescott Field last Friday night… The Raiders went up 3-1 at the end of the first inning but the Rams scored 1 in the top of second inning… Laurens responded with a 5 spot in the bottom of the inning and then both teams scored in the fourth inning… Westside scored 2 and Laurens 5 to give them a 10-run lead which they held onto in the fifth to win the game on the 10-run rule… The Raiders pounded out 12 hits and Thomas Jones led the team going 3-3 with one of them being a solo homer in the fifth inning… Morgan French picked up the complete game win giving up 3 runs only 1 was earned…  Click on the following for the game’s box score and some player stats: 2016-3-11_LDHS-BB_vs_Westside  ….   • Softball: Chester 7 – CHS 3… The Lady Red Devil softball team hosted the Chester Lady Cyclones last Friday and though they fell 7-3 the one thing they did not do is give up… The Red Devils trailed 7-0 going into the bottom of the 7th inning when they plated their 3 runs after two were out… According to some unofficial statistics (Chester’s scoring of the game) the game was scoreless going into the 3rd inning when Chester struck for 5 runs and added 2 more in the 4th… The Cyclones had 17 hits to the Red Devils 3… Hunter Benson, Makayla Pearson and Shauna Goforth were credited by Chester as having the Red Devil’s hits… The team returns to action today as they travel to Laurens in a game that can be heard here on Real Radio 860 WLBG
  • Baseball: CHS 4 – Chester 3 (8)… At the time of this posting all I can tell you about the Red Devil varsity baseball game at Chester last Friday night is that the Red Devils took a 4-3 in 8 innings with Charlie Craven hitting a 2-out double to drive in the winning run… If I get more details on the game I will post them up tomorrow.
