  • BB: Mauldin 4 – Laurens 1… Last night the Laurens Raiders hosted the Mauldin Mavericks in region baseball action at Ed Prescott Field… The game started well enough for the Raiders as they plated a run in the bottom of the first after two outs when Jalen Bragg singled and two batters later Kobe Williams brought him in with an RBI single… However that was all the runs the Raiders would produce in the game and the Mavericks scored 4 to take a 4-1 win over the Raiders… Mauldin took the lead for good putting two runs on the board in the top of the second inning  and the score remained 2-1 until the top of the seventh when Laurens relieve pitcher Jalen Bragg surrendered back to back solo homers to make the score 4-1… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-20-Mauldin … For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-20-Mauldin-SC…  By the way the JVs took an 11-8 win over the Mavericks in action prior to the varsity game.

  • BB: Mid-Carolina 8 – Clinton 3… About the same time the softball team was taking on the Rebels in Clinton the baseball team was down in Prosperity also taking on the Rebels… The news here is not as good as it was for the softball team as the Rebels took and 8-3 win… The Rebels jumped on top with a 3-run homer in the bottom of the second inning but the Red Devils did respond by putting up a single run in the top of the third…The Rebels came right back and scored 2 more runs in the bottom of the inning to go up 5-1… Clinton added 1 more run in each of the next two innings to trail 5-3 and that would be the end of the Red Devil scoring as Mid-Carolina added two more runs in the fifth inning and a single run in the sixth… I do not have “official” stats on the game but one source shows the Red Devils getting 4 hits in the game to the Rebels 5…  That same source show Taylor Bailey getting 3 of those hits and all Clinton runs came with the help of Rebel miscues… After Friday night’s game Coach Tom Fortman had the following comments “Clinton baseball had a tough week with losses to Chapman, Ninety-Six and Mid-Carolina. I will continue to search for the right combinations in his lineup and rotation as the team prepares to turn the season around with upcoming games this week versus Newberry, Laurens and Broome… I will continue to lean on the leadership and hard-nosed play of senior Taylor Bailey.”… The team is scheduled to host Newberry tomorrow before hosting Laurens on Wednesday… Real radio 860 WLBG will be bringing you the varsity game on Wednesday starting about 7:30.

College Notes:

  • Women’s D-I Brackets Revealed… Sunday evening the men’s D-I basketball brackets were revealed and we talked with you about that yesterday… well last night it was the women’s turn as their brackets were released… It’s not surprising that undefeated UConn drew the #1 seed in the Albany Regional and that once beaten (by South Carolina in the SEC Finals Tournament Finals) in the Kansas City Regionals… Notre Dame in the Spokane Regionals and Louisville in the Lexington, KY Regionals were the other two #1 seeds… The defending National Champions Gamecocks made it into the regionals as a #2 seed and will open play Friday night at the Colonial Life Center in a 7:30 pm contest against N.C. A&T in a game that can be seen on ESPN 2… The bad news for Gamecock fans is that they are in the same regional as UConn so that means that if both teams don’t stumble along the way they will meet in the regional finals and only one of them will make it to the Final Four…. To go to the NCAA website where and interactive bracket for the entire women’s tournament is located, click here.

  • Baseball: Riverside 6 – Laurens 3… Last Friday night for the second time in three days the Laurens Raiders and the Riverside Warriors Faced each other in region play this time at Ed Prescott Field… Also for the second time in 3 days the Raiders fell to the Warriors this time by a score of 6-3… The Warriors led 3-0 going into the bottom of the third inning when the Raiders put 2 runs on the board… Ty Foster had a double in the inning and Kobe Williams walked and both scored thanks to a couple of Warrior errors… The Warriors DH Greg Keilman had a 3 run homer in the fifth inning to pretty much put the game on ice but the Raiders battled right down to the end as they did score another run in the seventh inning… The Raiders managed 7 hits with Foster and Williams getting 2 hits each… For the game’s box score and some stats, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-9-Riverside … For the games scorecard, click on the following: LDHS-BB-3-9-Riverside-SC … The Raiders are back at home today (weather permitting) as they host Emerald in a JV-Varsity doubleheader with the JVs starting at 5:30 and the varsity about 7:30… We plan on bringing you that game here on Real Radio 860 WLBG and streaming on the internet at www.wlbg.com

  • Friday: Spartanburg 6 – Clinton 2… Clinton High lost a tough one to Spartanburg High 6-2 on Friday night, bringing the tying run to the plate in the last inning but was unable to push them across.  Starter Thomas Hellams was dominate for the first two innings, striking out four before being forced out of the game with back spasms.  Senior Corey Suber pitched valiantly in an emergency relief role but ended up taking the loss on four unearned runs in the fifth inning.
  • Saturday Game 1: Union 10 – Clinton 9… In the 10 am game on Saturday, Clinton fell behind Union County High School 9-4 but scored 5 runs in the top of the 7th thanks in part to run scoring doubles by Aaron Copeland and Konnor Richardson to force the game into extra innings.  Unfortunately for Clinton, Union was able to push across the winning run in the bottom of the 8th.
  • Saturday game 2: Clinton 10 – Dixie 4… In the third game of the weekend, Clinton found the win column, beating Dixie High School 10-4 in Taylor Bailey’s return to the mound.  Senior Aaron Copeland led the attack, going 3 for 3 with a double and a home run.  Caleb Riddle, Chance Ewell and Bailey all chipped in with two hit games.
  • Last Night: Clinton 6 – Southside Christian 3… Senior Thomas Hellams battled to pitched four strong innings and Junior Griffin Fuller came on to close out the final three innings. Offensively, the six runs were driven in by five different players in a true team win…. Coach Fortman added, “We have played a lot of baseball, five games in the last five days. Thomas wasn’t exactly 100% but he fought through those four innings and then what Griffin did, getting the final nine outs. He was a wild card because we haven’t used him on the mound but he just filled up the zone and was able to get it done.  We didn’t make every play but we were able to get the job done.”… Clinton closed the preseason at 4-2 and will open the regular season at home against BHP on March 6th.

Laurens Academy

  • Hammond 15 – LA 0… The Laurens Academy Crusader baseball team had to travel to Columbia yesterday afternoon to take on the SCISA Class AAA Hammond Academy Skyhawks… The results are not what I like to report as the Skyhawks took a 15-0 win over the Crusaders in 4 innings… The Skyhawks got their 15 runs of 16 hits… The Crusaders managed just two hits both back to back singles in the fourth inning by Thomas Lowry and Noah Moore with 1 out… Both moved up a base on a wild pitch and Joshua Moore reached on a walk to load the bases… However they would get no closer to home plate as the Hammond pitcher struck out the next two batters… To see the game’s box score click on the following:LA-2-24–Hammond   … To see the game’s scorecard click on the following: LA-SC-2-24-Hammond… The team will host Oakbrook Prep in their first home game this Friday with first pitch scheduled for 6:00 pm.

Lady Crusaders Win State Basketball Championship

  • Laurens Academy 48 – Patrick Henry 34… Last Saturday afternoon the Lady Crusader basketball team boarded the bus and headed back down to Sumter for one last time this season as they faced off against the Lady Patriots of Patrick henry Academy… When the final buzzer sounded it was the Lady Crusaders who were hunting for the scissors to cut down the nets as they took a 48-34 win but it was in doubt for a while in the third quarter… The Patriots scored the first two points of the game but the Crusaders responded by going on a 7-0 run… The Patriots then tied the game at 7-7 with 2:11 left in the first quarter and rattled off 8 points to make it 15-7 going into the second quarter and would never trail or be tied again…. At the half the Crusaders led 31-18 as their defense pressured the Patriots into at least 12 turnovers in the first half compared to their 5… The third quarter was almost a disaster for the Crusaders as the lid was on the basket and they had trouble buying a basket even as they took good shots… As a matter of fact they only made  one three-point basket and two free throws while the Patriots put 7 points on the board to make the score  36-25 going into the final quarter of play… The drought continued into early in the fourth quarter and one thing that helped to keep the Patriots at bay during that period is that the Crusaders dominated the boards on both ends of the court… With about 5:30 left in the game Coach Marlett made the decision to as he put it “rely on the defense and control the clock”… That they did as they forced the Patriots to foul them while chasing the ball… Ruthie Moore and Taylor Campbell both hit clutch baskets down the stretch and Campbell also was the recipient of most of the Patriot fouls going to the free throw line 9 times and making 7 of them…  Campbell led all scorers with 16 points and Moore was right behind with 15 points… Blair Quarles finished with 8 points, Jennifer Wu 7 and Regan Williamson 2.
  • Final Record… The Crusaders end their season with a 31-1 record losing only to a SCHSL Class-AAAAA Fort Mill 48-28 in a Christmas Tournament in late December… Over the last 4 years I do believe the team has won 95 games.
  • All-Tournament Team… Julia Kerber, Ruthie Moore & Taylor Campbell were named to the All-Tournament Team… Congratulations to them and the entire team!

Crusader Baseball

  • Patrick Henry 11 – Crusaders 1… The Crusader baseball team opened its season on the road last Friday as believe it or not they traveled to Patrick Henry to take on the Patriots… As Coach Luke Tollison told me they have a young team and expect to take a few lumps early in the season when they are playing some of the better teams in the state and that was the case last Friday as the Patriots took a 11-1 win in 5 innings… The game was tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the third inning when the Patriots struck for 5 runs then added 4 in the fourth and a single run in the fifth to end the game on the ten-run rule… Noah Moore singled in the third then stole second base… A fielder’s choice moved him to third base with two outs and he then scored on an error by the Patriots… The Crusaders had three hits with Will Tindal collecting two of them… To see the game’s box score click on the following: LA-2-23–Pat_Henry … To see the game’s scorecard click on the following: LA-SC-2-23–Pat_Henry

  • W Bk: PC 60 – Gardner-Webb 50… back on Tuesday night the lady Blue Hose basketball team traveled up to Gardner-Webb  to take on the Runnin Bulldogs… PC outscored G-W in the second quarter 19-4 to erase a 6 point deficit from the first quarter and then went on to take a 60 – 50 win thus improving their record to 10-16 overall and 7-8 in Big South play… Kacie Hall led PC with 18 points… The ladies only have 3 regular season games left on their schedule and the next one is tomorrow at the Templeton Center as they host Radford in a 2:00 pm contest.
  • M Bk: Gardner-Webb 78 – PC 63… Now last night at the Templeton Center the men’s basketball team hosted Gardner-Webb in their last home game of the regular season… The news here is not as good as it was for the ladies as the Runnin Bulldogs took a 78-63 win to spoil Senior Night at PC… G-W opened the game with a 23-8 run that put PC into a hole they just could not climb out of thought they tried mightily… Reggie Dillard led the Blue Hose with 16 points… The team has one regular season game left before the Big South Tournament starts next Tuesday and that game will be Sunday up in Buies Creek, NC as they take on Campbell

  • LA 33 – Curtis Baptist 21… Last night the Laurens Academy Lady Crusaders traveled down to Sumter to take on the Crusaders from Curtis Baptist out of Augusta, GA in a semifinals game in the SCISA Class A Tournament… CB came into the game averaging 45.5 points per game while LA came into the game averaging 51.8 points per game… With those kinds of numbers you might would have expected a fair amount of scoring In the game, but there was not as much as you might would have thought… In the end the final score was 33-21 but the best part is the LA Crusaders had the 33 thus punching their ticket to the finals tomorrow… LA had a 6-3 lead after the first 8 minutes of play with Ruthie Moore not starting off as well as she does as she went 0-6 from the floor during those first 8 minutes… Moore found her range in the second quarter scoring 7 points as LA extended its lead to 16-12 at the half… LA came out of the locker room hot and put 13 points on the board in the third quarter while holding CB to just 5 points thus making the score 29-17 going into the fourth quarter… The two teams managed just 4 point each in the final 8 minutes of play and when the buzzer sounded the LA Crusaders had taken the 33-21 win… Moore finished the game with 13 points to lead all scorers… Taylor Campbell was close behind with 10 points… Other scoring for LA were Julia Kerber 4 points and with 2 points each were Blair Quarles, Florence Mitchell, and Jennifer Wu.
  • Laurens Academy vs. Patrick henry Tomorrow… The win put the Lady Crusaders into the championship game tomorrow at 2:30 at the Sumter Civic Center… Their opponent will be the Lady Patriots of Patrick Henry Academy out of Estill, SC… I tried to find out what their record is but my usual sources don’t have very much about them… So I’ll just say good luck to the Crusaders!

Sports Report for Thursday, 2-22-2018

Local Notes:

LDHS

Four Sign at LDHS…  Yesterday in the mini-gym at LDHS four student athletes signed letters of intent to continue their education at three different institutions of higher learning…. As Head Football Coach Chris Liner put it, these are the best of the best in Laurens County… Afterwards video interview were done with each of these young men asking them why they chose their respective institutions and what they plan on doing after college… If you want to see those interviews, click here.

  • Nathan Rudder… Senior baseball player Nathan Rudder signed to play baseball and continue his education at Montreat College for the Cavaliers… Nathan saw limited duty on the diamond last year as he was recovering from a severe knee injury that occurred during the second game of the 2016 football season… That was his second injury in as many years… he is expected to contribute much more to the Raider baseball team this season whose season starts in a few days.
  • Troy Dendy… Senior running back Troy Dendy signed with Carson Newman University up in Jefferson City, Tennessee… His sophomore season (2015) he rushed for 847 yards and scored 8 TDs… His junior season (2016) he rushed for 960 yards and scored 10 TDs… This past season he rushed for 935 yards and scored 11 TDs.

Laurens Academy

  • Lady Crusaders back In Action Tonight… The Lady Crusaders will once again board the bus this afternoon and head down to Sumter to take on the Curtis Baptist Crusaders in one of the semi-finals of the SCISA Class A basketball Tournament… Curtis Baptist is located in Augusta, Ga…  As you may recall the Crusaders took a 59-18 win over Coastal Christian Monday to punch their ticket to tonight’s game… Curtis Baptist reached the game by defeating Dorchester Academy 58-45 last Monday night also… Both the Crusaders of LA and the crusaders of CB came into the tournament as #1 seeds in their part of the bracket…  from what I can gather, CB comes into tonight’s contest with a 21-3 record and are averaging 45.5 points per game while their defense gives up 26.8 points per game… LA is averaging 51.8 points per game and giving up 24.3 points per game…  CB and LA have faced two common opponents… CB defeated Wardlaw 48-28 & 55-22 while LA defeated Wardlaw 54-28 & 63-36… The other opponent they have in common is WW King which CB defeated last weekend 55-18 whil LA has taken 51-8& 47-13 wins over WW King… Sounds like these two teams will match up about evenly on paper and one thing I can promise… the Crusaders will win…. I truly hope it is the LA Crusaders
