Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Clinton 35 – Chesnee 6… A lot of folks wondered how the Clinton Red Devils would play last Friday night against the Chesnee Eagles after their one-sided loss to the Abbeville Panthers the week before and especially on a night where they were honoring two former state championship teams… Well they answered that question right off the bat as they took the opening kickoff and drove 59 yards for a TD with Kris Holmes carrying the ball in from the 1 yd. line and with Sam Tiller’s kick jumped on top 7-0 and never trailed as they went on to take a 35-6 win over the Eagles…. In fact Clinton scored each of the first three times they had the ball and took a 21-0 lead into the locker room at the half…. The Red Devils scored on their first possession of the second half their last one of the game… Chesnee got on the board after the Red Devils mishandled a punt return and gave the Eagles a a short field as they recovered at the Clinton 19 and scored on the first play from scrimmage… Clinton had 355 yards of total offense to Chesnee’s 121 and 291 of Clinton’s yards were on the ground…. Dasion Mosley returned the opening kickoff 82 yards for a TD but the extra point was missed to put Laurens up 6-0 with just 13 seconds taken off the game clock… The Cavaliers responded by scoring twice go up 14-6 before Mosley again returned a kickoff 81 yards to the Dorman 6… Troy Dendy then carried it in on the next play and Devon Hubner added the PAT to make it 14-13 Dorman with seconds left on the clock in the first quarter… Dorman scored twice more in the second quarter before the Raiders got on the board on a 46 yard pass from Ryan Campbell to Deonte Smith… Hubner’s PAT made it 28-20 and the Raiders never scored again…. The Raiders had only 112 yards of offense while Dorman rolled uo 558 yards… The Raiders did have 205 yards of kickoff return yards… For complete stats on the game, click on the following: Laurens+at+Dorman+GAME+PACKET  The Raiders open region play this Friday as they host the Hillcrest Rams.

Sports Report for Monday, 9-11-2017

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Red Devils Pick Up First Win… The Clinton Red Devils picked up their first win of the season as they defeated the Aiken Green Hornets 47-33 at Wilder Stadium last Friday night mainly because they were much “Wiser” than Aiken… Of course by “Wiser” I mean Mark Wise who had 255 net yds. and scored 5 TDs on the night in a game was not as close as the score sounded… The Red Devil defense set up the first score as Jerimiah Boyd intercepted Aiken’s first play from scrimmage to give the Red Devils the ball at the Aiken 26 yd. line and 3 plays later Wise picked up the first of his 5 TDs on the night on a 9 yd. run… Wise’s other TD runs were of 13, 56, 45 and 2 yds…. Kris Holmes and Darien Bailey had the other TDs for the Red Devils… Aiken scored 2 of their TDs in the last couple of minutes in the game when the outcome was no longer in doubt… For stats on the game, click on the following: CHS+vs+AHS+Quick … For a play by play narrative of the game click on the following: CHS+vs+AHS+Play+by+Play  …   The Red Devils travel to Aiken next Friday to take on the Panthers.

LDHS:

  • Irmo Scores in Last Minute to Defeat Raiders… The Irmo Yellow Jackets scored with 48 seconds in the contest to take a 28-21 win over the Laurens Raiders in a game that Irmo just made one more big play than the Raiders did in a back and forth game… A lot of folks had wondered how the Raiders would play after the spanking they received at Chapman the week before… They played well enough to tie the game twice and actually take the lead 14-7 early in the third quarter… The Irmo defense was geared to stop the run and Troy Dendy as evidenced that the Raiders had only 58 net yards rushing and Dendy was held to just 77 yards with 2 TDs… Ryan Campbell responded leading the Raider passing attack to get 213 yards as he went 20 of 37 with 1 interception and 1 TD a 47 yd. strike to Dendy… Aaron McCloud led all receivers with 7 catches… Duane Martin was named the Town of Gray Court player of the game by WLBG as he seemed to be all over the field on defense. .. For the complete stat package on the game, click on the following: Laurens+at+Irmo+Game+Packet… The Raiders host Boiling Springs this Friday night at KC Hanna Stadium.

Laurens Academy:

  • Laurens Academy Falls to the Confederates… The Laurens Academy Crusaders were on the road last Friday night taking on the Confederates of Andrew Jackson… The final score was AJ 44 and LA 18 with all the scoring coming in the first half… The Crusaders relied on their passing attack to generate their offense as the ground game was only able to garner 20 yards while Thomas Lowery went 8-18 throwing for 221 yards and 3TDs all to Will Tindal… On defense Kenny Langston had 11 tackles to lead the Crusaders while Cal Robertson caused a fumble and Joshua Moore recovered it… The Crusaders return home to Todd Kirk Field this Friday to host Cathedral on Grandparents Day.

Ware Shoals

  • Hornets Pick Up First Win of Season… The Ware Shoals Hornets picked up their first win of the season last Friday night at Tommy Davis Field as they defeated Great Falls 20-6… The Hornets jumped out to an early lead scoring 2 TDs in the first quarter.. The defense scored the first one as Christian Walker blocked a GF punt which Will Calvert scooped up and ran in for a TD… The Hornets scored again later in the first quarter as their quarterback Jermarius Goodman carried the ball in from 1 yard out… The Hornets defense scored again in the second quarter on a pick-six by TyDreke Carroll… GF scored late in the game to make the final 20-6… The Hornets host Greenwood Chritian this Fiday night at Tommy Davis Field.

Pro Sports     For more information on each game, click on the score at the start.

  • Braves … The Breves finished their 4 game series with the Marlins over the weekend As you may recall they took a 6-5 win on Thursday… On Friday the Marlins rebounded to take a 7-1 win… However the Braves took Saturday’s game by a score of 6-5 and Sunday’s game 10-8… They are off tonight and will start a series in DC with the Nationals tomorrow night
  • Drive … The Greenville Drive and the Charleston RiverDogs completed their best of their series for the SAL Southern Division Championship over the weekend… To remind you, the Drive took game one down on the coast last Wednesday night… Friday night the RiverDogs evened the series by taking a 2-1 win at Flour Field… In the deciding game on Saturday there is good news for Drive fans as they shutout the RiverDogs by a score of 5-0 to capture the division title… The Drive will face off against the Kannapolis Intimidators, a Chicago White Sox affiliate, in the South Atlantic League Championship Series beginning on Monday night in Kannapolis… The Drive will look to continue their success against Kannapolis, as they posted a 7-2 record against the Intimidators in the regular season series… First pitch in the opener is scheduled for 7:05 PM.

Local Notes:

CHS:

  • Greer 41 – Clinton 0… Last Friday night the Red Devils hosted the Greer Yellow Jackets who were coming off a 42-7 loss to Byrnes the week before and were looking to take their frustration out on someone and that someone just happened to be the Red Devils as Greer took a 41-0 win at Wilder Stadium… Greer took the opening kickoff and marched down the field in 4 plays and scored on a 46 yd. run by Dre Williams and with the PAT went up 7-0… From there Greer never looked back… The Greer defense never let the Red Devils get any closer than the Greer 22 in the second quarter where they intercepted a Red Devil pass then drove down the field to score their third touchdown with just 32 seconds left in the half 21-0… Greer had 360 yards of total offense in 45 plays with 208 of it coming on the ground… The Red Devils managed 192 yards of offense on 52 plays all of it on the ground as Konnor Richardson went 0-5 with the one interception… Kris Holmes netted 48 yards on 20 carries while Mark Wise netted 74 yards on 16 carries… The Red Devils will host Aiken this Friday night at wilder Stadium… For a look at more statistics on the game, click on the following: CHS vs Greer Quickie

LDHS:

  • Chapman 61 – Laurens 24… The Laurens Raiders loaded the bus and traveled up too Inman last Friday night to take on the undefeated and defending Class-AAA State Champions the Chapman Panthers … The Raiders found out quickly why Chapman is ranked #1 in AAA right now as they took a 61-24 win over the Raiders… The Raiders kicked off to Chapman to start the game and marched down the field but the Raider defense stiffened and held the Panther on 4th down at the Raider 15 yard line… On the first play from scrimmage the Raiders fumbled and Chapman recovered at the Raider 24 yard line then immediately hit a 24 yard scoring pass for the first of their 9 TDs on the night… Laurens responded by driving downfield and getting a 23 yd. field goal fro Devon Hubner 10 make it 7-3… Chapman scored again just before the end of the first period to go up 14-3… Laurens scored next on a 34 yard run by Dwayne Martin and made it 14-10… After that it was all Chapman ad the Raiders would not score again until the fourth quarter when Chapman had pretty much iced the game… Dwayne Martin had another TD run of 6 yds. In the fourth quarter and Laurens other score in the fourth quarter was on a 5 yd. run by Carado Ray with Hubner making all the PATS he attempted on the night… As you might imagine led in most all statistics… They had 530 total yards of offense to the Raiders 265… The rushing yards were pretty equal with Chapman getting 261 to the Raiders 244… The passing yardage was one-sided as the Panthers had 269 to the Raiders 21… The Raiders lost 3 fumbles and had 1 interception… Troy Dendy had 129 yards rushing for the Raiders but Chapman’s DJ Twitty led all rushers with 145… For a look at the complete stat package for the Raiders click on the following:  Laurens+at+Chapman-stats… The Raiders travel to Irmo this Friday night.

  • Braves 5 – Cubs 1… Yesterday the Braves did manage to lock the closet where the Cubs keep the brooms as they avoided the sweep by taking a 5-1 win… The Braves managed 8 hits to the Cubs 5 with Nick Markakis going 2-3 with an RBI and Rio Ruiz went 2-4 with 3 RBIs… The Braves return home tonight and the first team into Sun Trust Park will be the Texas Rangers.
