Sports Report for Thursday, 2-25-2016

Local Sports Notes:

LDHS: Well we have a couple of quick notes from LDHS…

  • Williams Makes South Carolina All-Star Team… LDHS senior LaDarius received a terrific post-season honor as he has been selected to play on the South Carolina All-Star team that will face off against a similar team from North Carolina on March 19th at Socastee High School… This is a well deserved honor for the senior who averaged just over 11 points per game this past season… He has had several offers form D-II schools so far but is still weighing his decision…. Congratulations to LaDarius!!
  • Carlay Receives Offer From Gamecocks… About two weeks ago this Saturday, Raider junior offensive lineman Summie Carlay attended Junior Day at the University of South Carolina… Summie was one of several high school juniors who accepted the invitation to attend… After touring the facilities and talking with position coaches and Coach Will Muschamp, he came away very impressed with the program and coaches especially Coach Muschamp… They must have been impressed with Summie also as they offered him a scholarship to play before he left… This is not the only offer he has received as Coastal Carolina has also made him an offer… Obviously he was ecstatic to get the offer but has not decided yet as to what he will do as some other schools are also showing interest… Looks like he will have some interesting choices to make and maybe it’s just me but I think he would look great in Garnet & Black.

College Notes:

  • Men’s D-I AP Poll… This week’s Men’s D-I AP Poll still has Villanova #1 and Kansas #2… Virginia jumped from #7 to #3 while Oklahoma dropped 1 spot to #4… Xavier moves up from #8 to #5… To see the rest of the AP poll, click here
  • Women’s D-I AP Poll… This week there was almost no change in the Women’s D-I AP poll as the top 5 remain unchanged with UConn holding down #1 and Notre Dame #2… Spots 3-5 are held by South Carolina, Baylor & Ohio State in that order… Again if you would like to see the entire poll, click here.

Clemson Basketball Summary

  • Men… The Clemson Tiger men’s basketball team is now 16-12 on the season and 9-7 in ACC play… They are currently on a 2 game losing streak and will return to next Tuesday as they host Virginia at The Well in Greenville… That will be their last regular season home game and thy close their regular season one week from this Saturday at Boston College.
  • Women… The Lady Tigers are really struggling this season as they are 4-23 overall and winless in ACC play… The Lady Tigers are on the road tonight as they travel to #2 ranked Notre Dame.

  • GHS 3 – CHS 0 … The Red Devils had two matches last Saturday and the first match came bright and early at 9 am against the Greer Yellow Jackets… Greer scored 2 goals in the first period and 1 in the second to take a 3-0 win over the Red Devils… The Red Devils managed only one shot on goal by Jesus Gonzalez while Jack Harkins and the Red Devil defense was under constant attack from the Yellow Jackets… Harkins managed 15 saves during the match while facing 28 total shots from Greer.
  • SDS 1 – CHS 0… The Red Devils had one other match on Saturday afternoon and that was against the Griffins of the Spartanburg Day School… This proved to be a defensive struggle as the Griffins got the only goal of the contest in the 77th minute to take a 1-0 win over the Red Devils… The Red Devils out played the Griffins firing 7 shots on goal to the Griffins 6, but the late pressure by SDS was too much for the Red Devils as they allowed SDS to get the lone goal of the contest… The Red Devils are now 0-3 on the season and are scheduled to return to action next Tuesday as they travel to Mid-Carolina to take on the Rebels.

As someone once said, the only constant is change.

Local Notes:

LDHS: The Raider 9th grade and JV teams hosted the Greenwood Eagles in the main gym at LDHS last night… I did not get the 9th grade boys results in time to bring them to you today but let’s look at how the JV teams did.

  • G JV: GHS 32 – LDHS 23… The JV girls closed out their season with a 32-23 loss to the Lady Eagles… The team has showed gradual improvement the later part of the season as the evidenced by the fact that earlier in the season the Eagles defeated the Raiders by 26 points…At the start of the game both teams had trouble with their offense as the score was 11-5 Greenwood at the half… Jada Young led the Raiders with 7 points… The team finishes their season 2-14 and 1-13 in region play… My thanks to Coach Kayla Patterson for getting the results to me this year!
  • B JV: LDHS 52 – GHS 33… Better news where the JV boys’ team is concerned as the raiders defeated the Eagles 52-33… The Raiders were led by Justin Anderson and Josh Greene who both scored 13 points each… Their record is now 15-6 on the season and they have one last game to play tomorrow against Southside HS at Carolina HS starting at 2 pm… Coach Dawkins wants to thank the community for their support of the team this season and request they come up and see them play one last time tomorrow.

Raiders Finish Regular Season Tonight At Greenwood… The Laurens Raider varsity basketball teams will close out their regular season tonight as they travel to Greenwood to take on the Eagles… There is a lot at stake in the games tonight for both teams… The Lady Raiders are on the bubble for making postseason play… A win tonight will help their chances of being the #4 finisher in the region and continuing their season… The boys’ team has already assured that they will continue their season after tonight but they still have something to play for… A win tonight gives them no less than a tie for second place in the region and assures them of a home game in the first round of the playoffs as I do believe they have the tiebreaker over Hillcrest who possibly would be tied with them for that #2 spot… There is also an outside chance they could finish first in the region if Westside were to lose… In any case, Good Luck to the Raiders tonight!!

Laurens Academy:

SCISA Region 2-A basketball Tournament… The SCISA Region 2-A basketball tournament continues today out at Laurens Academy… The Lady Crusaders who are the #2 seed in the tournament in the girls’ bracket will play today at 4 pm against either Newberry or WW King but I do not know which one… As soon as that game finishes, the boys’ team which is also a #2 seed in the boys’ bracket will take the court against Newberry Academy… Should the Crusader teams win, they will advance to the finals which will be held tomorrow at Richard Winn Academy… The girls’ championship will be at 3 pm and the boys at 4:30 pm… Good luck to the Crusaders!

College Sports:

W: South Carolina 86 – Florida 71… Lady gamecock basketball fans might have been a little worried about how the team would respond to the loss to #1 UConn on Monday night… Well it appears they kept their focus as the defeated the Lady Gators of Florida last night at the Colonial Life Center by a score of 86-71… Tiffany Mitchell led the team with 2 points.
