College Sports:

  • Rematch for BCS Title Game… Well I am sure most of the college football fans around her already know that both Alabama and Clemson took care of business on Saturday to set up a re-match for this national championship one week from today down in Tampa… Just in case you had surgery Saturday ands are just now getting over the drugs they gave you lets recap those games… Alabama defeated Washington 24-7 in a game that was closer than a lot of people thought it might be as Alabama only had a 17-7 lead at the half and did not score again until the fourth quarter… If you want more details on this game, click here… Now the Clemson Tigers served notice to the Crimson Tide that they are looking forward to changing the results of last year’s championship game by defeating Ohio State 31-0… In this game the Clemson defense was as much the story as the offense as they held the Buckeyes scoreless for the first time since 1993… I personally think the results will be different next week… For more on this game, click here.

Local Notes:

LDHS Boys… Yesterday afternoon the Raider boys’ basketball team concluded their participation in the C. Dan Joyner Poinsettia Classic at Greenville HS as they took on the Patriots of JL Mann…

  • Laurens 71 – Mann 67… The Laurens Raiders jumped out to a 22-8 first quarter lead and then held off a furious JL Mann rally in the closing minutes to defeat the Patriots 71-67…The Raiders big lead early was partially due to Carson Todd coming off the bench to score 6 points in the opening quarter and Josh Greene also having 6 points while the Raiders were rolling on all cylinders both offensively and defensively… In the second quarter, both teams played at a hectic pace as the Patriots outscored the Raiders 21-19… Justin Anderson led the Raiders in the quarter with 7 points, and 3 pointers by Conner Dunlap and Aden Partee helped keep the Raiders out in front… In the third quarter the Raiders outscored the Patriots 14-13… They were behind most of the quarter until Christian Anderson hit a big 3 from the wing in the closing seconds of the third quarter to push the Raiders lead to 55-42 at the end of the third quarter… The Raiders were up by as much as 20 in the second half and victory seemed certain… However, the Raiders made some critical turnovers and some poor shot selection in the last quarter that allowed the Patriots to hang around… Mann outscored the Raiders 25-16 in the last quarter… Free throws down the stretch from Dravious Copeland, Christian Anderson, Josh Greene and Justin Anderson helped seal the game for the Raiders… Justin Anderson led the Raiders with a career high 22 points, Josh Greene had 16 while Carson Todd added 15 points. Also scoring for the Raiders were Conner Dunlap and Christian Anderson with 6 points each.. Aden Partee had 3 and Dravious Copeland and Zh’Rece Anderson each had 2 points… The Raiders improve to 3-9 on the season and next play at Spartanburg on Thursday, January 5th.

LDHS Girls… The Lady Raiders wrapped up their participation last night as they took on the Lady Bears of BHP to decide who would finish 3rd and who would finish 4th in the Lady Raider Rumble.

  • BHP 63 – Laurens 45… As they often have this season, the Lady Raider offense opened the in “cold mode” as they managed only 7 points in the first quarter while BHP scored 26 and then went on to take a 63-44 win over the Raiders…. The Raiders continued to struggle in the second quarter as they trailed 41-17 going into the locker room at the half… In the first half the Bears dominated the boards and gave the Raiders very few second chances while they did manage several put-backs after getting the offensive rebound… To their credit, the Raiders never quit but the hole was just too big to climb out of as they never got closer than 13 points to the Bears… The Bears’ Shanteal Davis led all scorers with 23 points…. Laurens was led by Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon who had 13 points and Alexus Espinosa was also in double digits with 11… Others scoring for the Raiders were Cali Heisey with 7, Malaysia Todd 5, Paula 4, MK Moore & Tieisha Jones both had 2 and Qua Fortson 1… The Bears finish the tournament in third place while the Raiders finish fourth.
  • Other Results from the Raider Rumble… In a game prior to the Laurens vs. BHP game, Brookland-Cayce defeated palmetto to capture fifth place while in the game after the Laurens game, York defeated Union County 54-32 which means York won the Rumble Championship and Union came in second… Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon was named to the All-Tournament Team while Cali Heisey garnered Honorable Mention.

Clinton Boys… The Red Devil boys’ basketball team has been in action the last 2 nights in a holiday tournament held at Batesburg-Leesville and Newberry HS… As you may remember I did not get scores on Wednesday night action in time for the sports report yesterday but I do have it now plus results from last night

  • Wednesday: Aiken 68 – Clinton 60… On Wednesday the Red Devils took on the Aiken Hornets at B-L HS… The game was a close one and Clinton led 49-46 going into the fourth quarter but the Hornets outscored the Red Devils in the final 8 minutes of play 22-11 to take a 68-60 win… Jalen carter led the Red Devils with 17 points and Kiah Young was also in double-digits with 13 points as well as Tymori Tribble with 10… Others scoring for Clinton were Jahleed Cook with 9 points, Zay Hurley 7, Josh Williams 3 and Vilo Boyd 1.
  • Thursday: Newberry 77 – Clinton 74 in OT… Last night the Red Devils closed out the tournament action as they faced off against the Newberry Bulldogs at Newberry with a third place finish in the tournament on the line… This was one whale of a game with Clinton leading 49-42 going into the last 8 minutes of play but once again the Red Devils allowed the opponent to come back and this time tie the game at 70-70 at the end of regulation and send it into overtime… The Bulldogs got 2 field goals and 3 free throws in the overtime to Clintons 1 field goal and 3 free throws (all by Jalen Carter) as Newberry took a 77-74 win in OT allowing them to finish third in the tournament and Clinton fourth… Carter led the Red Devils with a game-high 38 points on the night as he was all but unstoppable… Tymori Tribble and Kiah Young both scored in double-digits as they had 16 and 13 points respectively… Zay Hurley chipped in 4 points and Jahleed Cook 3 to account for the Red Devils scoring… The Red Devils are now 7-3 on the season.

  • Birmingham Bowl: South Florida 46 – South Carolina 39 in OT… In the Birmingham Bowl yesterday the gamecocks had trouble getting their offense going at the start of the game while the defense was less than stellar but did manage to come back and tie the game 39-39 at the end of regulation and send the game into overtime but the Bulls of South Florida scored in the OT and the Gamecocks did not as the Bulls took a 46-39 win… Turnovers also were a big problem for the Gamecocks… For more on this game, click here.

Sports Report for Thursday, 12-29-2016

Local Notes:

Lady Raider Rumble… Yesterday it was day 2 of the Lady Raider Rumble at LDHS and the final day of pool play so let’s catch up on the action there.

  • Brookland-Cayce 40 – Clinton 31… Last night the Lady Red Devils faced off against the Lady Bear Cats of Brookland-Cayce and overall played a pretty good game but came up on the short end of a 40-31 score… The Red Devils led 8-7 at the end of the first quarter of play but B.C. fought back and tied the game 13-13 going into the locker room at the half… In the second half B.C. cut down on their high turnover rate compared to the first half and took better control of the boards to pull away to a 29-22 lead going into the final quarter of play… With the lead in the final quarter, they started to slow down the game holding the ball outside and forcing Clinton out of their zone defense to chase the ball… When Clinton was forced to foul they then hit enough free throws to keep the lead and go on to the win… Savannah Campbell led the Red Devils with a game high 12 points and was the only Red Devil in double-digits… Others scoring for Clinton were; Ashlyn Abercrombie with 8, MK Kelly 5, Kalen Richardson 2 and both Terriana Bennett and Brie James had a single point… The Red Devils will not be playing tonight in the tournament due to Ware Shoals withdrawal from the tournament… The Red Devils are now 3-8 on the season.
  • Laurens 55 – Palmetto 41… In the last game if the evening yesterday, the Laurens Lady Raiders took an exciting come from behind 55-41 win over the Lady Mustangs of Palmetto HS… Just like the night before, the Raiders came out of the locker room cold and trailed 16-3 at the end of the first quarter.. The Raiders did pick up the pace in the second quarter as Alexis Espinoza got hot and had all 8 of her points on the night in the quarter but Laurens still trailed 27-19 at the break… In the third quarter the Raider press caused the Mustangs to turn the ball over and more often than not the Raiders turned those into points… Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon had the hot hand in the quarter scoring 9 points as the Raiders cut the Mustangs lead down to 3 points (35-32) going into the final 8 minutes of play… At the start of the fourth quarter the Raiders press continued to bother the Mustangs and the Raiders rattled off 13 unanswered points before the Mustangs finally scored in the period with 3:37 left in the contest… As the Mustangs were forced to foul they became even more frustrated making mistakes and Laurens finally was able to hit the majority of their free throws in those final minutes (which was in contrast to earlier in the Game) to preserve the win… Also in the fourth quarter, Cali Heisey had 21 of her game high 26 points on the night to help put the nails in the Mustangs’ coffin… Others scoring for the Raiders were Spurgeon with 11, Espinosa with 8 and both Qua Fortson and Portland Wallace added 3 points each.. Rounding out the scoring for the Raiders you have Laylay Todd and Ashunti Smith with 2 points each… The Raiders will close out their participation in the tournament tonight at 6:30 as the take on BHP for third place in tournament.
  • York 53 – BHP 41… In other action last night at the Raider Rumble, York defeated BHP 53-41 and thus will face Union County tonight at 7:45 in the championship game of the tournament.

LDH Boys… Yesterday afternoon the Laurens Raider boys’ basketball team continued their participation in the C. Dan Joyner Poinsettia Classic at Greenville HS…. As luck would have it they also faced off against the Palmetto Mustangs.

  • Palmetto 72 – Laurens 60… Unfortunately the Raiders could not duplicate the success the girls had against the Mustangs as they fell 72-60… The Raiders came out determined to make it a game with some sharp shooting by Aden Partee, Josh Greene and Zh’Rece Anderson each had 3 pointers in the first period as the Laurens Raiders trailed 15-13 at the end of the first quarter…However in the second, the Laurens defense faltered and Palmetto was able to get some easy baskets due to some costly turnovers, missed layups and defensive breakdowns outscoring the Raiders 21-9 thus taking a 36-22 led into the locker room at the half… In the third quarter, things got worse before they got better… The Raiders fell down as much as 24 points until late in the third quarter Carson Todd, Justin Anderson, Ty Foster, Josh Greene and Aden Partee helped the Raiders end the third quarter on a 12-0 run and cut the lead to 55-42 at the end of the quarter…In the fourth the Raiders continued to put up points but could not get timely stops and had to foul late… Several times the Raiders cut the lead down to just 10 points, but could get no closer… Leading the Raiders in scoring was Justin Anderson with 12 points. Josh Greene also was in double figures with 10 points… Aden Partee had 9 points, Zh’Rece Anderson had 8 points, Carson Todd contributed 7 points, Connor Dunlap had 6 points, Dravious Copeland had 3 points and Keenan Dickey and Ty Foster each had 2… The Raiders managed to hit 10 3-pointers on the night, but it was not enough… Laurens will play JL Mann at 12:15 at Greenville High on Thursday, December 29th… The Raiders fall to 2-9 on the season.

CHS Boys… The Red Devil boys team was scheduled to take on Aiken last night in semi-final action at Batesburg-Leesville and I am sorry but Coach Romines did not get those results to me… If I get them today, I will pass them on to you tomorrow.

  • BHP 47 – Clinton 32… In the first game of the tournament, the Lady Red Devils took on the always strong Lady Bears of BHP… In the first quarter the Red Devils played solid defense and got their share of rebounds and led 7-6 at the end of the quarter… However the Bears picked up their offense in the second quarter and out-rebounded the Red Devils and led 24-16 at the half… BHP continued to pull away in the second half and wound up winning the game 47-32… The Lady Devils fought to the end but just could not climb out of the hole… The Bears’ Shanteal Green led all scorers with 21 points… Ashlyn Abercrombie was the only Red Devil in double digits with 14… Other scoring for Clinton were Savannah Campbell with 9, Terriana Bennett 6 and MK Kelly 3.

LDHS

  • Laurens vs. Ware Shoals… The Lady Raiders were scheduled to take on the Lady Hornets of Ware Shoals in their first game of the day buy transportation issues and district policy about using non-district owned transportation prevented them from making the tournament this year… They will forfeit all their scheduled games in tournament.
  • Union County 54 – Laurens 46… In the last game of the evening the Lady Raiders faced off against the Lady Yellow Jackets of Union County HS and fell to the Jackets by a score of 54-46… Union came out hot and the Raiders cold and the score was 12-0 before the Raiders finally got on the board to make it 12-2 with 2:35 left in the first quarter… The Yellow Jackets had an 18-4 lead at the end of the first quarter and 28-18 at the half… Union led 39-30 going into the final quarter of play and the Raiders did not give up as they cut the Yellow Jackets lead to three points 49-46 with 2 minutes left to play but just could not get any closer… The Raiders’ defense caused more turnovers than the Raiders committed themselves but the problem was they had trouble turning them into points as they could not finish out the shots and missed over half of their free throw attempts… The Raiders were led by Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon who had a game high 19 points and was the only Raider in double-digits… Cali Heisey finished the night with 9 points, Qua Fortson 8, Tieisha Jones 4, Alexus Espinosa & Portland Wallace 2 each while both MK Moore and Jayla Mosley had a single point… The Raiders and the Mustangs of Palmetto are scheduled to play today at 7:45 or possibly a few minutes before.

  • Girls: Clinton 55 – GTCHS 22 … The Lady Red Devil basketball team rolled to a one-sided 55-22 win over the Lady Warriors… Just like Monday night the team came out of the locker room hot as they took a 23-4 lead at the end of the first quarter but the scoring slowed down in the second quarter as they led 29-6 at the half… Not to fear they came back hot in the third quarter and opened up a 43-10 lead going into the final 8 minutes of play in route to the win… Ashlyn Abercrombie led the team with a game-high 14 points… Both Savannah Campbell and Terriana Bennett had 9 points while Tysheria Henningham and Alexis Pagano added 5 each… Monet Boyd and Olivia Hamrick had 4 each while Diana Martin and Kalen Richardson chipped in 2 each… Bri James concluded the scoring with 1 point.

  • Girls: LA 31 – CA 29… In girls’ action, the game was closer than Coach Marlett probably liked but the Crusaders did hang on to take a 31-29 win over the Cavaliers… The Crusaders had a 19-17 lead at the half and stretched that to 27-19 going into the final quarter… However the Cavaliers mounted a comeback in the final 8 minutes of play outscoring the Crusaders 10-4 but the Crusaders held on to take the win… The Crusaders were led in scoring by Ruthie Moore who had a game-high 14 points… Taylor Campbell added 10 points while Reagan Williamson and Blair Quarles chipped in 2 each… Julia Kerber sank one free throw for the Crusaders to round out the scoring… The team is now 11-1 heading into the Christmas break.
  • Boys: LA 64 – CA 38… Now for the second day in a row it is good news for Crusader fans as the boys’ team defeated CA by a score of 64-38… The Crusaders raced out to a 21-7 lead after 8 minutes of play and then outscored the Cavaliers in each of the remaining quarters (except the third where both teams scored 11 points) to take the win…. Local Notes:

CHS: The Clinton Red Devils played host to the High Point Academy Grizzles last night… High Point is a charter school that has recently started in Spartanburg and this year only goes through grade 11.

  • Girls: Clinton 32 – High Point 32… Despite the fact that the Lady Red Devils were without their point guard MK Kelly who had an ankle injury they were able to take a big 32-16 win… Clinton jumped out to a 12-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and were never really threatened after that… Ashlyn Abercrombie had a game-high 12 points to the Red Devils… Others scoring for Clinton were Savannah Campbell and Terriana Bennett who had 9 points each, and both Tysheria Henningham and Sara Olivia Stephens had 2 points each.
  • Boys: Clinton 71 – High Point 32… In boys’ action it was much the same as the Red Devils coasted to a 71 – 32 win over the very young Grizzles… The Red Devils raced out to a 22-3 lead at the end of the first quarter and Coach Eddie Romines was able to substitute freely very early in the contest and continued to do so throughout the contest… High Point never quit and was able to connect on 6 three-point goals in the third and fourth quarter but it was too little to late… Because of the playing time of substitutes the Red Devils only had 2 players scoring in double-digits and they were Kiah Young with 12 and Zay Hurley with 10… Others scoring were Tymori Tribble 9, RJ Suber 8 while both Jalen Carter and Zay Bennett had 6 each… Also scoring were Tashymen Boyd with 5 while Josh Williams, Jahleed Cook, Vilo Boyd, Keith Neal, KoKo Richey, Tyreke Watts and Ty Priestly all chipped in 2 points each… The Red Devils have one final game before they break for the holidays and that will be tonight as the varsity teams host Greenville Tech Charter.

Laurens Academy: The Crusader basketball teams travelled to Winnsboro last night for a little holiday tournament action where both varsity teams took on South Aiken Baptist.

  • Girls: LA 64 – SAB 33… In girls’ action, the Lady Crusaders continued their winning ways as they rolled to a 64-33 win over SAB… The Crusaders jumped out to a 19-5 lead at the end of the first 8 minutes of play and stretched it to 37-19 at the half and were never really threatened after that… Regan Williamson finished the game with 21 points to lead all scorers… Ruthie Moore and Taylor Campbell were also in double-digits with 13 and 12 points respectively… Hannah Stribling and Blair Quarles each scored 6 points, while Morgan Marlett added 4 and Julia Kerber 2.
  • Boys: LA 60 – SAB 36… Now good news for Crusader fans as the boys pretty much did the same thing in taking a 60-36 win over SAB… In this game the Crusaders also rolled out to an early 18-7 lead at the end of the first quarter and stretched to 31-11 at the half in route to the win… Joshua Moore had a game-high 21 points to lead the Crusaders and Will Price was also in double-digits with 10 points… Others putting points on the scoreboard for the Crusaders were Jonathan Burs with 9, Noah Moore 6, and Ryan Anderson 3… Dawson Foster, Kenny Langston, Jack Kerber and Jack Kobe each had 2 points while Luke Kerber, Tim Luo and Charlton McCall each added a single point… The Crusader teams will be back in action again today down in Winnsboro against an opponent to be determined.

Clinton Middle School… Last night it was round 1 of 2 of brother vs. brother and sister vs. sister (maybe not literally) at CMS as the Wildcat Red and White teams faced off against each other…

  • Girls: Red 27 – White 17… The Red Wildcats were led in scoring by Devonia Walker with 9 points and Dans Kinard with 6 points while the White Wildcats were led in scoring by Kaitlyn Baker with 6 points and Shamia Noel with 5 points.

Congratulations to the City of Laurens Parks and Recreation Department 9-10 year-old All-Star youth football team for defeating Marion this past Saturday 14-6 to win the SCAP State Championship down at River Bluff High School… Congratulations to the team for prevailing in a hard fought game.

Local Notes:

CHS: Last Friday night the Clinton Red Devil basketball teams traveled to Chapin to take on the Eagles in varsity basketball action.

  • Girls: Chapin 59 – CHS 19…. Sorry no other details.
  • Boys: Clinton 43 – Chapin 36… Now it’s better news where the boys are concerned as the Red Devils took a 43-36 win over the Eagles giving them a sweep of the Eagles in their games this season… The Eagles strategy on the night was to slow down the pace of the game and try to stay close… That is why the score was only 8-6 Red Devils at the end of the first quarter and 20-16 at the half… The Red Devils broke open the close game in the third quarter with fast breaks set up by good defense to stretch the lead to 10 points going into the fourth quarter… Clinton used clutch free throw shooting (7-10) in the final quarter to help maintain their lead… Tymori Tribble led the Red Devils with 13 points and Jalen Carter was also in double digits with 12 points… Others scoring for the Red Devils were Kia Young with 8 points, Zay Hurley 4 while Josh Williams and Tashymen Boyd both had 3 points…. The Red Devils improve their season record to 4-1 on the young season and the varsity teams will be back in action tonight as they host High Point Academy starting with the girls at 6 pm.

LDHS: last Friday night the Raider varsity basketball teams hosted the Vikings of Spartanburg HS.

  • Girls: Spartanburg 52 – 49… In the first game of the evening it was a tale of two halves as the Lady Raiders led 27-17 at the half but things turned around for the Lady Vikings in the second half as they took a 52-49 win over the Raiders… In the first half the Raiders got the baskets to fall and had some points on turnovers and second chance shots… However in the second half three things happened that turned the game around… The first is that the Vikings handled the press better and they used their height to control the boards and cut down on Raider second chance shots… The third thing was that the Raider’s offense went cold and only the 17 points scored by Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon kept them in the game… The Raiders were led by Surgeon’s game-high 23 points and she was the only Raider scoring in double-digits… Other scoring for the Raiders were Qua Fortson and Cali Heisey with 7 points each, Jayla Mosley had 5 Tieisha Jones 3 and both KT Foggie and Alexis Espinosa chipped in 2 each…. The team is now 4-4 on the season.
  • Boys: Spartanburg 64 – Laurens 52… In the boys’ game, the Raiders started out fast as they raced out to a 17-6 lead at the end of the first quarter… However they could not sustain that momentum into the second quarter as at the half they trailed 33-27 and then Spartanburg continued to pull away to take a 64-52 win over the Raiders… Spartanburg tied the game 19-19 at the 3:41 mark of the second quarter and then took the lead on a pair of technical foul free throws and did not tail again in the game… The Raiders continued to fight until the final buzzer and got within 1 point (50-49) with 6:34 left in the game but could get no closer… Braylin McBeth led the team with 12 points scoring 10 of them in the first half… Justin Anderson had 9 points while both Josh Greene and Ty Foster had 8 each… Keenan Dickey had 6 and Christian Anderson had 3… Connor Dunlap, Ryan Dacre and Carson Todd all chipped in 2 points each. The team is now 2-7 on the season… Both Raider team will be off until Tuesday, December 27th when they will play in different holiday tournaments that we will talk more about next week.

Laurens Academy: No action on Friday but they will be in action at Richard Winn today.

Sports Report for Wednesday, 12-14-2016

Local Notes:

LDHS: The Raider basketball teams played host to the Rebels of Byrnes HS last night in a varsity basketball doubleheader.

  • Girls: BHS 59 – LDHS 53… In the first game, the Lady Raiders faced off against a 5-0 Byrnes team that definitely was bigger than them inside and almost as quick plus they liked to play pressure defense also… The Rebels led 22-14 after the opening quarter of play and the Raiders did manage to cut the Rebel lead to just 2 points with about 2 minutes left to play in the half but the Rebels hit an offensive spurt to close out the first half with a 37-26 lead and never looked back… To their credit, the Raiders did not quit and played the game out all the way to the final buzzer… The Rebels had 4 players scoring in double digits with Jada Burton leading the team with a game-high 14 points… The Raiders had 2 players scoring in double-digits with Cali Heisey scoring 11 points and Tie Jones 10… Others scoring for the Raiders were Alexus Espinosa 9, Ke’Ny-Ja Spurgeon 6, MK Moore 5 and Qua Fortson 2… The Lady Raiders are now 4-3 on the season.
  • Boys: BHS 77 – LDHS 42… In boys’ action the Raiders faced a tall task as they took on the defending Class-AAAA Champions in the Byrnes Rebels… The Rebels came into the game 4-1 and have a tall, quick team led by Citadel commit Hayden Brown and it looks very much like they are poised to make a run deep into the playoffs this year as they took a 77-42 win over the Raiders… The Raiders only trailed 12-7 after the first quarter but were outscored 25-4 in the second quarter and the game was never in doubt after that… The Rebels dominated the boards with their height and gave the Raiders few second shot chances while they cashed on several themselves… Just like the girls in the game before, the boys played the game all the way to the end but were just out-talented… The Rebels’ Hayden Brown had a game high 19 points to lead his team… The Raiders had no players scoring in double-digits and were led by Keenan Dickey with 7 points… Others putting points on the board for the Raiders were Carson Todd and Josh Greene with 6 each, Justin Anderson with 5 and Dontae Shumpert with 4… Braylin McBeth, Connor Dunlap, Rakeem Franklin and Christian Anderson all scored 3 points each… Ty Foster and Zh’Rece Anderson rounded out the Raider scoring with one point each… The young Raiders fall to 2-6 on the season… Then varsity teams will be back in action Friday as they host the Spartanburg Vikings in a doubleheader of basketball that can be heard hear on Real Radio 860 WLBG.
