AAA Football Appeal… Yesterday I mention to you that Broome HS had appealed the seating in the AAA playoff bracketing… They felt like they should have been in the playoffs instead of Dreher HS according to the way they interpreted the AAA point system…. Yesterday morning their final appeal to the Appellant Committee at the SCHSL was heard and once again they were denied… So unless the officials at Broome seek further legal options in court, Dreher will be in the playoffs this Friday night and Broome will be watching from the sidelines.

NASCAR

  • Season Nears the End… The NASCAR season is winding down fast as the races this weekend out in Phoenix are the next-to-last races of the season… The camping World Trick Series race will take place tomorrow night at 8:30 and can be seen on FS1… The Xfinity Series race will take place Saturday at 4:00 pm and can be seen on NBCSN… The Sprint Cup Series race will go green right about 2:30 Sunday afternoon.
  • Driver Standings… As most NASCAR fans know there are now 8 drivers in contention for the Sprint Cup Championship and that will be cut to just 4 drivers after this Sunday’s race… As it stands now, Jeff Gordon is the only driver already qualified for the final four… Other drivers still in contention according to their current point standings are; Kyle Busch, Kevin Harvick, Martin Truex Jr., Carl Edwards, Brad Keselowski, Kurt Busch & Joey Logano.

High School Football Brackets … Now for the true high school football fans in the area, I have a link to this year’s playoff brackets for each of the SCHSL’s classifications… If you go to www.wlbg.com and look about 2/3 the way down the right side of our home page, you will see a section titled “Between the Lines”… If you look under that header you will find a posting titled 2015 SCHSL Football Playoff Brackets.. If you click on that it will carry you to a posting that has a link to each division’s bracket…. Now 2 notes before you look… First, the AAAA brackets will not be known until sometime this Saturday so you will not find them there yet… I’ll add them after they become available… Second a note about the AAA bracket… Broome high school has protested the seeding in that bracket that left them out of the playoffs… As it stands now, Dreher H.S. is in and they are out… The initial appeal was heard by the SCHSL Executive Committee yesterday morning and it was denied… They have one final appeal to the Appellant Committee today at 10:00 am… If they win the appeal, the bracket may change slightly… If they lose it remains as posted unless they get the lawyers involved and then who knows what can happen… If you want to see the bracket posting, click her.

LDHS

  • LDHS 17 – Greenwood 14….. The Streak is Over!!!… The Laurens Raiders have come out on the short end of the score for the last 18 football games between the two schools before last Friday night… At the Laurens County TD Club meeting last Friday at noon, Coach Chris Liner said that his plan was to over there that night and get off the bus and just pound the Eagles into the ground and break that streak which had been forefront in the Raiders mind all week…  Well that is pretty much what the Raiders did as they took a 17-14 win over the Eagles and earned a spot in the AAAA playoffs starting on Nov. 20th…  Greenwoods won the coin toss and elected to defer to the second half so the Raiders got the ball first but for only 1 of 3 times in the first half the Raiders did not score… After the punt the Raider defense started one of their most dominant halves of the season as they did not allow the Eagles a first down in the first half and held the Eagles to 16 yards of total offense while the Raider offense generated 196 yards of total offense… Greenwood fumbled to end their first possession and the Raiders recovered at the Greenwood 40 and drove to the Greenwood 5 where the drive stalled and Irvin Angeles put the Raiders on the board with a 22 yard field goal with 5:20 showing on the clock… Greenwood went 3 and out on their next possession and the Raiders moved down the field from their own 34 yard line behind the rushing of Troy Dendy & DQ Floyd… Floyd scored 12 plays later from 14 yards out and with Angeles Pat went up 10-0 with 11:16 left in the half… The Raider defense held the Eagles to 3 and out again and the Raiders set up shop at the Greenwood 48 yard line… The score came 7 plays later with Troy Dendy carrying it the last 15 yards.., Angeles again kicked the Pat and the Raiders led 17-0 with 6:52 left in the first half…  The Raiders would get the ball twice more getting as close as the Greenwood 21 but not score… Greenwood took the opening kickoff o the second half and returned it 96 yards for a TD to cut the score to 17-7… Two possessions later the Eagles mounted a 55 yard drive (their longest of the night) and scored with 3:32 left in the third quarter to make the score 17-14 Raiders… After that score, the Raiders started a 73 yard drive that stalled at the Greenwood 7 yard line but more importantly took almost 9 minutes off the cock… The Raider defense then stepped up and held the Eagles to 3 and out on their next two possessions and Laurens took over with 4:05 left on the clock and ran it out as the celebration began… When asked after the game if this was a bitter-sweet victory considering he played and coached at Greenwood his answer was a resounding NO… It was so sweet it could not be described… The Raiders finish the season 6-5 overall and 5-2 in region play finishing 4th in Region I-AAAA… The Raiders will be on the road for the first round of the playoffs on November 20th but the location and opponent will not be known until Saturday about noon as some AAAA teams have not finished their schedule due to flooding last month… Congratulations to Coach Liner and the team!…. Local Notes:

CHS

  • Girls’ Tennis… Once again weather caused the postponement of the Lady Red Devils’ third round tennis playoff match with Daniel H.S.… Again weather permitting; the teams will try to get it in today starting at 5:00 pm at Daniel H.S.

LDHS… The Laurens Raider 9th grade and JV teams hosted the Greenwood Eagles last night at KC Hanna Stadium in their last games of the season.

  • 9th Grade: Greenwood 40 – LDHS 6… In the first game of the evening, the Laurens 9th grade team fell to the Eagles by a score of 40-6… The Raider offense struggled all night to find any rhythm and momentum in the game and often had penalties or miscues that were the main reason behind that… The Eagles had a rushing TD in the first quarter to go up 7 – 0 at its end… The Eagles scored twice in the second quarter to go up 19-0 at the half…The last Eagle TD of the quarter was set up by a high snap to the Raider punter deep in Raider territory that was covered by the Eagles at the Raider 1 yard line and Greenwood scored on the next play…The third quarter was almost scoreless but the Eagles did manage to get a TD as time ran out and add the PAT… This was a short drive set up by a block of a Raider punt with Greenwood recovering at the Raider 15 yard line…. That made the score 26-0 going into the final quarter of play… The Eagles added 3 more TDs before the Raiders got on the board with 5:49 left in the game on a 57 yard run by Carado Ray… The 2-point conversion failed and Greenwood led 40-6 which would be the final score… The 9th grade team ends its season with a 2-5 record.
  • JV: Greenwood 40 – LDHS 12 …. Unfortunately the news was not a lot better as the Eagles took a 40-12 win in the JV game… Greenwood jumped out quickly to a 14-0 lead at the end of the first quarter on a couple of long runs by their quarterback Dre Yarborough who had several long runs on the night… Greenwood added 2 more TDs in the second quarter before Laurens was able to mount a 75 yard drive with Trevor Madden and Braylen Williams connecting on a 7 yard TD pass with seconds left in the half…. The TD was set up on a runs by Ty Rice including one of 47 yards… The 2-point conversion failed and the Raiders trailed 28-6 at the half…Greenwood  took the opening kickoff of the second half and on the second play of the drive Yarborough again scored on a long 43yard run… The Raiders blocked the PAT so the score stood 34-6 … The Raiders answered with a quick score of their own as they got a good kickoff return on the kickoff setting up shop at the Greenwood 45 yard line… On the first play from scrimmage Ty Rice broke off a 45 yard run for the score but the 2-point conversion failed and the score stood 34-12 Eagles with 8:21 left in the third quarter… The Eagles fumbled the ball away on their next possession but the Raiders could not capitalize on it … Neither team could gain much traction and the Raiders could not convert a 4th down situation at their own 17 yard line with about 3:00 minutes to play and the Eagles took over at the Raider 17 yard line… Four plays later the Eagles scored but failed on the PAT to make the final 40-12…. The JVs wind up the season with a5-4 record

Sports Report for Thursday, 11-5-2015

Local Notes:

CHS

  • Girls Tennis… The Lady Red Devil tennis team was scheduled to travel to Daniel H.S. yesterday for their third round playoff match but as you might expect, the weather got in the way… The match is now scheduled for this afternoon with first serve scheduled for 5:00 pm at Daniel H.S.

Laurens Academy

  • Holmes and Urwick Selected to Play in North-South All-Star Game…. Congratulations go out today to a pair of seniors out at Laurens Academy… Ryan Holmes and Josh Urwick have both been selected to play in the SCISA North-South All-Star game…The Crusader quarterback and his favorite target connected numerous time this season and were one of the most potent weapon the Crusaders had on the field… The game will be played on December 5th at one of the school in the Orangeburg area… When I get more details on the game I’ll pass it to you.

LDHS

  • Raiders 9th grade & JV Teams at Home For Last Games of the Season… The Raider JV and 9th grade football teams will host the Greenwood Eagles today at KC Hanna Stadium… Ninth grade action is scheduled to start at 5:30 and the JVs about 7:00… This is their last game of the season so come on out and see the future of the Raider football program.
  • Fan Buss to Greenwood…. There will be a fan bus heading to Greenwood for the game tomorrow night… The cost of the ride is $5 and then you will have to purchase your ticket once you get there… The bus is scheduled to leave LDHS at 6:15… If you would like to reserve a place on the bus, call the District Transportation Office at 682-9117

NASCAR

  • Kenseth Suspended… Historically NASCAR has pretty much let the drives handle their “disputes” with other drives in almost any way they want to sometimes even on the track… After all, the fans kind of like that in most cases… However after last weekend at Martinsville, NASCAR did hand out a 2 game suspension to Matt Kenseth for 2 races and put him on probation for 6 months because of apparent intentional crashing into Joey Logano and knocking him out of the race…There were no other fines or penalties against him or the Joe Gibbs Racing Team… Joe Gibbs Racing will appeal the severity of the penalty this morning… Funny to me how the media has focused in on Kenseth but has paid little attention to the fact that Danica Patrick did the same thing in the same race to David Gilliand chasing him around the track and crashing into him… She was fined $50,00 and lost 25 Sprint Cup driver standing points and put her on probation until December 31st…  What no suspension???  Not a double standard here is there???
  • Three Races Left… Now there are just 3 races left in the season and 2 in the Eliminator Round, this Sunday at the Texas Motor Speedway and next week in Phoenix… This Sunday’s Sprint Cup race will go green at 2:00 pm and can be seen on NBC…. The 8 drivers still in the running for the Sprint Cup Championship are; Joey Logano, Carl Edwards, Jeff Gordon, Kurt Busch, Brad Keselowski, Martin Truex Jr., Kevin Harvick & Kyle Busch… With the win at Martinsville last weekend, Jeff Gordon is the only one of the eight to have qualified to be in the “final four” in the running for the championship at Homestead, Florida in a couple of weeks.

Local Notes:

CHS

  • Girls tennis: CHS 4 – Chapin 2… After a one day delay due to rain, the Lady Red Devil tennis team was able to get their second round playoff match in with Chapin yesterday at the CHS tennis courts… It was a hard fought match that involved a couple of tie-breakers but when it was over Clinton had taken a 4-2 win… Gracie Waldron, Mason Paige Gambrell, Elizabeth Jones and Izzy Worley all took wins in singles action to lead the Red Devils to the win… Waldron and Gambrell’s matches were really close and both took wins in tie-breakers… The team will have to jump right back into action today in third round action… They will be on the road as they travel to Daniel who defeated Southside yesterday… First serve is scheduled for 5:00… Good luck to Coach Simmons and the team!!

College Football Polls

  • College Football Playoff rankings…Well the committee that is in charge of setting up the “final four” for the FBS playoff released it’s first rankings yesterday and it has Clemson fans smiling… There top 4 in order are Clemson, LSU, Ohio State and Alabama…  Spots 5 & 6 (sometimes called the first two out) are occupied by Notre Dame & Baylor…Of course Coach Dabo Sweeny commented that only one of those polls he is concerned with is the last one… He is correct in that a lot can happen over the next 3-4 weeks to change that order but still the orange clad fans in this area are saying yes but…. Of course the committee looks not only at won-loss record but also who the teams have played, what is their (the opponents) won-loss record, who did they play (the strength of schedule factor concept) and other factors… No matter what Coach Sweeny says, the game this Saturday with Florida State just became more important than the “the next team on the schedule” mantra that all coaches use…. To see the entire top 25 according to the committee, click here.
  • FBS AP Poll…. Now looking at the FBS AP poll for comparison, the only change in the top 10  were a little re-ordering in spots 8 & 9 when compared to last week… The top 5 in order are Ohio St, Baylor, Clemson, LSU & TCU… Spots 6 & 7 are still occupied by Michigan St. & Alabama… Notre Dame & Stanford swapped spots with Notre Dame 7th this week and Stanford 9th… Iowa still checks in at #10… To see the entire top 25 poll, click here.
  • FCS Coaches’ Poll… Now there was a good bit of “upward movement” in the FCS Coaches’ Poll as last week’s #1 Coastal Carolina suffered their first loss of the season to Charleston Southern this past Saturday… Jacksonville St. is the new #1 and a familiar team that shows up on a lot of schedules in the area the Mocs of Chattanooga are now at #3… Coastal Carolina dropped to #8, Charleston Southern is #13 and the Citadel cracks the top 25 at #22… To see the entire Coaches’ Poll, click here.

Sports Report for Tuesday, 11-3-2015

PC Notes: The PC football team came up just a little short in action at Bailey Memorial Stadium last Saturday as Gardner-Webb took a 14-10 win… This marks the third time in as many weeks that the Blue Hose have fell by a TD or less to their opponent… As in the past, the PC defense played well enough to win but the offense struggled as they were held to to just 195 yards of total offense to G-W’s 280…. Now for more details on the game, click here… The Blue Hose will be on the road this Saturday as they travel to Liberty for a 3:30 pm contest.

Local Notes: I need to do a little catching up on a few things I just have not had to get to or I just recently have received results on.

  • Boys… The boys team was also in action at the meet and they finished 13th out of 21 teams that competed…. Chandler Sprouse had his best time ever of 17:06 which put him coming in 10th place and also qualified him for the state meet coming up this weekend…. Justin Nobles also ran his fastest time ever in the meet…. Congratulations to all these athletes for even competing in the meet.

Girls Tennis Postponed…. The second round tennis playoff match between Chapin and Clinton was postponed yesterday due to weather… Weather permitting that contest is now scheduled for 4:30 today at the CHS tennis courts… Good luck to Coach Simmons and the team.

LDHS

  • Tennis: Fort Mill 7 – LDHS 0…. The Lady Raider tennis team qualified for the playoffs by finishing 3rd in the region and traveled to Fort Mill last Thursday for the opening round contest… Fort Mill proved to be a formidable opponent as they took a 7-0 win over the Raiders thus eliminating them from the playoffs… If you would like to see match details and comments from Coach Corley, click here…. Congratulations on the team for a fine season and qualifying for the playoffs!!

FBS AP Poll…. Local Notes:

CHS

  • South Pointe 26 – CHS 8…  The Clinton Red Devils traveled to Rock Hill last Friday night to take on the South Pointe Stallions and try as they might they came up on the short end of a 26-8 score in their final regular season game… The Red Devils were hampered by 11 penalties, turned the ball over 4 times on downs and had 2 turnovers… Clinton often got drives started when a penalty or turnover would set them back… The Red Devils scored their 8 points with 9:52 left in the 4th quarter when Charlie Craven and Tay Cook connected on an 18 yard TD pass…. Donovan Blackmon added the 2-point PAT… The Red Devils never gave up and battled all the way to the end…. That fighting spirit and effort is what Coach Andrew Webb cited after the game… For some game statistics, click on the following: Clinton at South Pointe 10-30-15  … A win would have bolstered Clinton’s chances at landing a playoff spot but getting one was still possible if Union County defeated Chester and Lancaster defeated Broome… Union County did defeat Chester but Broome defeated Lancaster in overtime thus forcing the Red Devils to watch the playoffs from the sidelines… The Red Devils finish their season with a 3-7 record overall and 1-4 in region play.

LDHS

  • Laurens 42 – Greenville 41… If you were a Laurens Raider fan with a weak heart then KC Hannah Stadium may not have been the place for you to be last Friday night as the Raiders took a 42-41 the 2 over Greenville in a back-and-forth game that was not decided until there was 4 seconds left in the contest… Greenville scored with 4 seconds left in the game to make the score 42-41 and decided to go for 2 points to win the game… Greenville quarterback Carson Spires dropped backed and tried to get a receiver on the right side of the end zone only to have the ball tipped by the defender and go off the receiver shoulder pads fall incomplete giving Laurens the win… Spires led a 325 yard passing attack with 5 TDs for Greenville while DQ Floyd had 240 of Laurens 333 yards rushing and scored 4 touchdowns in the big region win…Troy Dendy had 81 yards rushing and a TD while quarterback Thomas Jones connected with Chris Statom for a 45 yard passing TD… Irvin Angeles made all 7 PAT attempts to account for the remainder of Laurens scoring… If you would like to see statistics on the game, click on the following: Greenville at Laurens Short Stats…  For a more complete narrative of the game, click on the following: Greenville at Laurens 10-30-15 Narrative… The Raiders will travel to Greenwood this Friday night for the final regular season game and the outcome of that game could very well determine whether the Raiders continue on into postseason play or stay home.

Laurens Academy

Sports Report for Monday, 10-19-2015

Local Notes:

CHS

  • Union 36 – CHS 12… The Clinton Red Devils boarded the bus and traveled to Union to take on the Yellow Jackets in Region 3-AAA action and someone forgot to pack the flying insect spray as the Yellow Jackets racked up over 400 yards of offense and took a 36-12 win over the Red Devils… The Yellow Jackets rolled out to a 22-0 lead at the half as the Red Devil offense just could not get the game going… Part of the problem may have been the quickness & size of both the offensive and defensive line for Union… Coach Andrew Webb did not fault his team’s effort and though outmanned the team never quit… Evidence of that is that the last two scores of the game belonged to Clinton… Charlie Craven connected with Jasper Fuller on a 26 yard pass play with 6:30 left in the contest and with Jalen Carter on a 14 yard pass with 1:10 left in the game… The Red Devils return to the friendly confines of Wilder Stadium this Friday in their last regular season home game against the Chester Cyclones… It will also be Homecoming.

LDHS

  •  Hillcrest 28 – LDHS 7… The Laurens Raiders came into Friday night’s game with the Hillcrest Rams on a 4 game winning streak and for the 2.5 minutes it looked very much like the streak could well be extended to 5 games but that was not to be as the Rams handed the Raiders their first region loss defeating the Raiders by a score of 28-7… The Rams won the toss and elected to defer to the second half which gave the Raiders the ball first… The Raiders then drove 71 yards in 6 plays to score on a 28 yard pass from Toby Jackson to Kezario Whitmore with 9:39 left in the opening quarter… During the drive, Troy Dendy had the bulk of the yards on the ground including a 45 yard run…. Dendy would end the night with 100 of the Raiders net 121 yards rushing… Irvin Angeles added the PAT to give the Raiders their first and last lead on the night… After that, the Rams won the battle of field position picking up first downs before the Raider defense usually stopped them but putting the Raiders deep in their own territory when they regained possession… Hillcrest tied the game early in the 2nd quarter as the Raiders attempted a fake punt at their own 33 yard line on 4th and 3 situation and gained only 2 yard giving the Rams a short field which they capitalized on 4 plays later… Just before the end of the half Hillcrest scored again after going 50 yards in just 3 plays to go up 14-7… The Rams next score came when a Raider punt was partially blocked and fell into the hands of the Rams Brian Spurgeon who returned it 33 yards for the TD… The Rams last score came with 2:47 left in the game and came after the Rams held the Raiders on 4th and 3 at the Raider 15 yard line… It took them 7 plays to cover those 15 yards to get the final score with 2:47 left in the contest to make the final 28-7… The Raiders record now stands at 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in region play and they will travel to Westside to take on another set of Rams this Friday… For game stats, Hillcrest at Laurens Short Stats

Laurens Academy

  • Carolina Academy 62 – L.A. 26… The Laurens Academy Crusaders were also on the road last Friday night as they traveled to Lake City to take on the Carolina Academy Bobcats… The Bobcats used their ground oriented attack to take a 62-26 win over the Crusaders… The Bobcats led 32-12 at the half with the Crusaders scores coming on a quarterback keeper by Ryan Holmes and a 32 yard pass from Holmes to Josh Urwick… In the second half, the Holmes to Urwick combination connected again for another TD and Holmes again scored on a quarterback keeper… The Crusaders return home this Friday night to play Wardlaw… It will also be Homecoming for the Crusaders…

Ware Shoals
