  • JV Football Recap: Hillcrest 19 – Laurens 16… Last Friday I told you that the Hillcrest JV football team defeated the Raiders 19-16 but I did not have any details… Well since then Coach Jawon Stephens sent me the following account of the game; “The game started off back and forth with the defense holding Hillcrest and forcing punts on their early possessions… Late in the 1st quarter, Laurens was able to break through to the end zone on a 29 yd TD pass from Kobe Williams to Devante Grant… The 2 pt. conversion attempt was successful as Williams completed the pass to Duane Martin… Late in the 1st half, Hillcrest was able to get on the scoreboard with just over a minute remaining… The 2 pt. conversion was good and the score was tied heading to halftime; knotted at 8… The second half was almost an exact copy of the 1st half. Laurens’ Jeremiah Jenkins scored on an 11 yd touchdown run in the 3rd quarter… Jenkins also added the 2 pt. conversion on a pass completion from Williams… Laurens was headed in for another score, but the drive was halted with a turnover… The next play following the turnover saw Jyqueiz Jefferson intercept Hillcrest’s pass attempt… Hillcrest was able to find the end zone with about 4 minutes to play in the game… They the converted the 2 pt. play… The game is now tied at 16… Hillcrest had the final chance to win the game and made good on their attempt… As time was running out, Hillcrest took a timeout with 5 seconds remaining to set up a game winning field goal attempt… The kicker was able to nail a 42 yard field goal to win the game by a final score of 19-16…We had several players play well. Local Football From Last Friday:

  • Chapman 38 – CHS 17… The Clinton Red Devils traveled to Chapman last Friday night and for the first half of Play the Red Devils gave the Panthers all they wanted as Clinton led 14-10 at the half… But as you all know the game of football has two halves and in the second half the Panthers outscored the Red Devils 28-3 to take a 38-17 win… Chapman got on the scoreboard first with a field goal but Clinton responded with 76 yard drive that ended with an 8 yard TD pass from Charlie Craven to Koko Richey with Elvis Fitz adding the PAT to make it 7-3 with 3:50 left in the half… Chapman then had a drive of their own which ended with a TD making it 10-7 Panthers… On the first play after the kickoff, Craven found Aaron Copeland open and the two connected for an 80 yard scoring strike and with Fitz Pat the score stood 14-10 Red Devils which wound up being the halftime score…The second half was pretty much all Panthers as the Red Devil defense just could not get a stop and penalties also came at the wrong time for Clinton on offense and defense.… Clinton did manage to mount a drive and score a 36 yard field goal early in the final quarter… Click on the following for a short version of the game statistics:chsvschapmanquickie   … Clinton will host the Mid-Carolina Rebels this Friday.

  • JV Football Update… Last Friday I reported that the Raider JV football team lost to Dorman by a score of 39-30 at Dorman… At that time I did not have any details on the game… Since then Coach Jawon Stevenson has kindly provided me some details… The following narrative is from Coach Stevenson; The game started off very nice for our team… We were able to stop Dorman on the opening possession of the game… On our first possession of the game, we were able to drive the ball and get on the board first… Duane Martin found the end zone for his first score… The conversion attempt failed… Dorman was able to come right back and take the lead a few plays later… After a possession that ended in a punt for Laurens, Dorman again scored to take the lead to 14-6… We in turn came back to score and tie the game at 14… Dorman added another score before half to take the lead… We were able to score coming out and get back into the game and make it competitive throughout the 2nd half of the contest… Dorman stretched the lead to 39-24 midway through the 4th quarter… Late in the contest, we were able to put a late touchdown on the board to cut the lead to 39-30… The failed 2pt conversion sealed the game as we had no timeouts remaining in the contest… The onside kick attempt failed, allowing Dorman to kneel, and run out the clock… We had several players provide positive play Thursday night… These players include Duane Martin, Kobe Williams, Will Tinsley, Tracy McClintock and Devante Grant… The offensive line consisting of Jordan Austin, Devon Harp, Will Pontoon, Jervis Young, Andrew Shelton, and Ty Davis allowed the coaches to freely call plays; executing all night.
  • Tennis: LDHS 4 – Hillcrest 3… The Lady Raider tennis team was in action last Thursday as they traveled to Hillcrest to take on the Rams… The ride back down I-385 & Hwy 14 was a pleasant one as the Raiders took a 4-3 win… Taking wins in singles action for the Raiders were Ella Orcutt, Julianne Turner, and Abby Davis… The #1 doubles team of Orcutt and Turner picked up the 4th win for the Raiders.

  • Volleyball: Westview 3 – Sanders 1… The Sanders Lady Yellow Jacket volleyball team traveled to Greenwood to take on the Lady Titans of Westview MS… The results were not what I like to report as Westview took a 3-1 win… It was a hard fought match with the Titans winning the first 2 sets by scores of 29-27 and 25-22… Sanders took the third set 25-16 but dropped the fourth 25-23… Sanders drops to 1-2 in conference play.
  • Volleyball: GCO 3 – HT 0… Also yesterday, the Lady Tigers of GCO traveled to HT to take on the Lady Panthers and the ride home was a pleasant one as GCO took a 3-0 win in another hard fought match… Set scores were 25-23, 25-23 & 25-19.
  • Volleyball: Northside 3 – LMS 0… The Lady Tigers of LMS also were in action yesterday and they also were on the road traveling to Northside MS in Greenwood to take on the Lady Knights… Once again I have a score that I wish I didn’t have to report as Northside took a 3-0 win… Set scores were 25-21, 25-12 & 25-22… The LMS coach had these comments after the match “The girls did a better job tonight with receiving. It took the girls a long time to finally get their heads in the game. Maria Diaz-Reynoso, 8th grader did a great job serving with a 5 serve streak in the 1st set. Haley Orrick, 7th grader did a great job serving in the 2nd set with a 6 point streak. The girls really battled in the 3rd set but came up.”

CHS:

Clinton 47 – Chesnee 12… The Red Devil running attack which had been missing in action the last few weeks was able to come back with a vengeance last Friday night in Chesnee as the Red Devils racked up 298 yards rushing and a total offense of 419 yards in their one-sided 47-12 win over the Eagles… The Red Devils stormed out to a 27-0 lead at the half and then added 20 more points in the 3rd quarter and did not allow the Eagles to get on the board until there a little over 5 minutes left in the game… Kris Holmes led the Red Devil rushing attack picking up 160 yards on 31 carries… Mark Wise had 2 rushing TDs for Clinton while both Koko Richey and Zikail Livingston each found the end zone on the ground…. Charlie Craven went 8-12 for 121 yards and 2 TDs…. Catching those TDs were Donte Reeder and Jalen Carter…. The defense even got on the board as Tashymen Boyd recovered a Chesnee fumble and went 30 yards for a score… Elvis Fitz converted on 5 of 7 PAT attempts… For stats on the game, click on the following: CHS at Chesnee Stats…. Dorman 52 – Laurens 21… The Laurens Raiders hosted the Dorman Cavaliers last Friday night and at the start of the game everything looked good for the Raiders as the defense put them on top 7-0 after Jaylin Walker tipped a Cavalier pass at the line of scrimmage and Braylin McBeth plucked it out of the air and returned it 48 yards and with Devin Hubner’s PAT the Raiders led 7-0… However, that would be the only time the Raiders would lead as Dorman came back to take a 52-21 win… The Cavaliers then put 28 unanswered points on the board to lead 28-7 at the half… The Raiders also suffered another type of loss in the first half as starting QB Ryan Campbell left the game early with concussion symptoms… Dorman scored another TD in the 3rd quarter to go up 35-7 but the Raiders did not give up as they scored 2 TDs in the 3rd quarter as D.Q. Floyd scored twice once on a 37 yard run and the other on a 15 yard run… To see the complete game statistics and a play-by-play account of the game, click on the following: dorman-at-laurens-stats-9-23-16  …  The Raiders will travel to Simpsonville this Friday to open region play taking on the Hillcrest Rams.
