Sports Report for Tuesday, 1-2-2018

PC Notes:

  • W: PC 76 – Furman 75 OT… The Lady Blue Hose basketball team ended their holiday break last Saturday as they hosted the Lady Paladins of Furman… Good news for PC fans as the Blue Hose took a 76-75 win in overtime… This was a comeback win for PC as they trailed the Paladins by as many as 14 points but managed to comeback and tie the game at 70-70 to send it into overtime… As she has for most of the season, Cortney Storey led PC with 24 points… For more information on this contest, click here…The Blue Hose improved their record to 3-8 on the season and will host the Liberty Flames tonight at the Templeton Center as they start the conference portion of their schedule.
  • M: Radford 78 – PC 62…. Now the news is not as good where the men are concerned as they hosted Radford last Saturday but Radford broke open a tight three-point game with a 20-3 run in the second half to defeat the PC 78-62 in the Big South opener for both teams… PC had cut the Radford lead to just 3 (52-49) with 13:36 left to play in the game when the Highlanders went on the 20-3 run to put PC in a hole they could not climb out of…. For more information on this game, click here… PC is now 7-7 on the season and will travel to Longwood tomorrow for a 7:00 pm contest

Local Notes:

LDHS

  • Todd named Tournament MVP… A follow-up note to the Raiders winning the Emerald City Classic Tournament last week, Carson Todd was named the Tournament MVP… Todd finished the tournament with 43 points and in the championship game on Friday he had 15 points, 6 rebounds and 2.5 steals… Congratulations to Carson on the award and again to the team for winning the tournament.

College Notes: A quick recap of some of the bowl games yesterday….

  • Outback Bowl… SC 26 – Michigan 19… In case you missed it, the Gamecocks came back from a 19-3 deficit to take a 26-19 win over Michigan in the Outback Bowl… It truly was a game of 2 different halves as the Gamecock miscues and lack of offense was the story in the first half… That completely turned around in the second half as the Gamecocks scored 23 unanswered points when Michigan had problems with miscues and the Gamecock defense… For more details on this game, click here… The Gamecocks finish the season 9-4 and that is just the seventh time the Gamecocks have had 9 or more wins in a season.
  • Rose Bowl… Georgia 54 – Oklahoma 48 in 2OT….  Arguably the best game of the day yesterday was Georgia’s 54-48 double overtime win over Oklahoma in the Rose to punch their ticket to the national Championship game in Atlanta next week… The Bulldogs trailed 31-17 at the half but came back to take the lead, lose the lead and tie the game in the second half… In the second OT they blocked an Oklahoma field goal to set the stage for the winning TD by Sony Michel… For more information on this game, click here.
  • Sugar Bowl… Alabama 24 – Clemson 6… In case you did not stay up until after midnight last night, Alabama got a measure of revenge last night as they defeated Clemson 24-6 to punch their ticket to the National Championship Game against Georgia next Monday… The bottom line in this game is that the Alabama defense throttled the Clemson offense not allowing the Tigers into the end zone and making them settle for two field goals… The Clemson defense did not play all that bad as more than a few of Bama’s points came from Clemson turnovers or were set up by Tiger turnovers giving the Tide a short field to work with… For more information on this game, click here… The Tigers end their season 12-2 in a year when many thought they would be rebuilding… That’s not bad rebuilding for sure.
  • Other Bowl Results… If you would like to check on the bowl results from yesterday or before, click here and it will carry you to the NCAA posting of all bowl games.

Laurens Academy

  • New Baseball Coach at LA….Two months ago Coach Halbert and I met and he formally resigned his position as head coach.  It was a difficult decision and one that he labored over since the end of last season.  Coach Halbert felt that after coaching for nearly 20 years at Laurens Academy and Southside Christian that it was the right time for him to retire from coaching.  At the time of our meeting Coach Halbert expressed that he was humbled and honored to be given the opportunity to coach baseball at LA for five years…. Coach Halbert leaves a strong legacy at Laurens Academy with the effort and time he gave to our athletes.  He carried on the tradition of our baseball program with dignity and class.  Twice his teams reached the state finals, and in 2012 they won the sixth state championship in school history.  Most importantly his influence on the character of our players will be his greatest accomplishment.  On behalf of the Athletic Department I am forever grateful for the sacrifices and commitment Coach Halbert made to LA baseball….I am very pleased to formally announce that he will be replaced as head baseball coach by Luke Tollison.  Coach Tollison is well known at Laurens Academy and has a tremendous background in baseball that will grow our program.  He was a member of four state championship teams at Laurens Academy, a member of the LA Hall of Fame, and following graduation he played college baseball at Spartanburg Methodist Community College and Francis Marion University.  We are excited to have Coach Tollison in this role and look forward to watching his teams compete on Crusader Field.
