Drive… The Greenville Drive concluded their series with the Charleston RiverDogs at Flour Field over the weekend so let’s also catch up with them.

  • Friday: RiverDogs 4 – Drive 0… After winning the opening game of the 4-game series on Thursday night, the Drive dropped Friday’s game to Charleston by a score of 4-0… Charleston simply outhit the Drive 8-4 and got the clutch hits when they were needed including a homer…. For more information on this game, click here.
  • Saturday: Drive 5 – RiverDogs 1….On Saturday night the Drive scored 5 runs in the 3rd inning and then made them hold up as they took a 5-1 win over the RiverDogs… The big blow in the decisive 3rd inning was a 3-run homer by third baseman Michael Chavis… For more information on this game, click here

Sports Report for Thursday, 8-11-2016

Local Notes:

  • Red Devil Scrimmages… Thanks to Coach Andrew Webb I now have the score from the BHP at CHS scrimmage on Tuesday night… The always tough and this year in SCHSL Class 4 BHP Bears took a hard fought 27-23 win over the Red Devils… Coach Webb stated that the Red Devils got off to a slow start but stayed together and overcame some adversity and had a chance to win but came up a little short…. He also stated he was proud of the leadership on the team and the fight the team showed… The Red Devils were at Berea last night and mainly due to the fact the team is involved in so many scrimmages this week, most of the time the younger (non-starting) players saw most of the playing time… Coach Webb stated they played different scenarios in the game and he really didn’t care about the score… He was very pleased with the play of his younger players as he was more interested in getting them reps and film on them… I am sure that helped their morale and will pay dividends before the season is over.
  • Clinton and Laurens at Woodruff Tonight.…. The Arthur State Bank Wolverine Showcase will take place tonight at Varner Stadium on the campus of Woodruff HS and both the Clinton Red Devils and the Laurens Raiders will be there… The Red Devils will take on Blue Ridge at 6:30 in the opening half of football… Chapman and Spartanburg will tangle in a half of football next and finally the Raiders and the Woodruff Wolverines will close out the action in a half of football that will start at about 8:30… Clinton will be on the home side of the field while the Laurens will be on the visiting side of the field… Cost of admission will be $6… Good luck to the Red Devils and the Raiders.

Olympics… Well the opening ceremonies for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio are now just hours away as they will take place tomorrow…. Those of you out there who are younger than 28 or so may not remember that Atlanta hosted the Olympics 20 years ago… I remember them well as my family went down for a couple of games and took in some basketball and baseball games… We even walked through the Olympic Park where the bomb exploded less than 2 hours before that tragic event happened…. The reason I bring this up is tonight at 7 pm WYFF Chanel 4 in Greenville will have a live look-back at the Atlanta Olympics… This is a lead-up to NBC’s coverage of the Olympics on WYFF… Should be interesting and I plan on watching it.

Pro Sports

  • Braves 8 – Pirates 4… The Atlanta Braves and the Pittsburg Pirates faced off in game 2 of their 3 game series last night in Atlanta and the Braves bats got hot as they pounded out 15 hits in route to an 8-5 win over the Pirates… To be honest it was a come from behind win as the Pirates put 4 runs on the board in the top of the first inning and then were held scoreless the rest of the way by 5 Brave pitchers…. Braves centerfielder Ender Inciarte led the Braves at the plate going 3-4 with an RBI… Game 3 of the series is tonight and is the last game at Turner Field for a while as the Braves hit the road tomorrow for a 10-game road trip…. Local Notes:

  • Barry Atkinson Featured in Local Media Story… I was surfing through the internet last night looking at some of the area media websites and an article on the Greenwood Index Journal site caught my attention… The article is about LDHS head athletic trainer Barry Atkinson…. Monte Dutton does a nice job recounting the highlights of Barry’s 35 year plus career at Laurens and his commitment to the wellbeing of student athletes…I know that when I ask if some specific feat on whatever athletic field has ever happened before at LDHS the reply I most likely will get “I’ll have to ask Barry about that, he will know”…. Some coaches have actually called him Moses (in a very respectful way) because of his knowledge of LDHS athletics…. Again it’s a good article and well worth the read…. To go to the Index Journal’s website where it is, click here.
  • Countdown to Kickoff… Well its only 23 days until Laurens and Clinton open their football season as the Raiders travel to Clinton to take on the Red Devils in the opening game of the season for both teams on August 26th… Also on the same date Laurens Academy opens their season at home against Hilly Hill Academy… Now PC fans have to wait until Sept 1st which is 29 days away for the Blue Hose to open their season on the road at Central Michigan and 52 days (Sept. 24th) for the home opener with Florida Tech.

  • Pirates 5 – Braves 3… The Braves and the Pirates started a 3-game series last night at Turner Field and if you have followed the Braves all year long you can probably guess how it came out the only question would be the finals score…. Well if you guessed the Braves lost you would be right as the Pirates took a 5-3 win… The Braves led 2-1 going into the top of the 6th inning when the Pirates struck for 4 runs to make it 5-2… In that inning they picked up their 4 runs on 4 hits and a walk…. The Braves Nick Markakis did have a solo homer in the 9th to make the final 5-3…. For more information on this game, click here.
  • Tourist 1 – Drive 0… In game two of their three-game series at Flour Field last night the Greenville Drive and the Ashville Tourist managed only 1 run and 8 hits total for the two teams on the night and unfortunately for Drive fans the Tourist had 5 of the 8 hits and the only run as they took a 1-0 win over the Drive… The Tourist picked up their only run in the top of the 5th inning and with the win ties the series at 1-1 with the rubber game coming tonight at 7:05…. For more information on this game, click here

  • Braves… The Braves were off last night and will start a 3-game home series with the Pirates tonight… The Braves are 37-68 on the year and 24 games behind the Washington Nationals who lead the NL East with a 61-44 record… The Braves record is the worst in MLB.
  • Drive 10 – Tourist 5… The Greenville Drive started a 3-game series with the Ashville Tourist at Flour Field last night with a 10-5 win… The Drive trailed 5-2 going into the bottom of the 5th inning when they put 8 runs on the board and the Tourist were shell shocked the rest of the game… The big blow in the fifth inning was a grand slam homer by the Drive’s second baseman Mitchell Gunsolus…  For more information on this game, click here.
  • Panther Practice schedule…. If you want to go see the Carolina Panthers today be prepared to do some hunting in and around Spartanburg as they are not scheduled to practice today. … Tomorrow they are scheduled to practice from 9:25 – 11:30 in the morning.
  • NASCAR… Most NASCAR fans already know that the Pennsylvania 400 scheduled for Sunday had to be delayed until yesterday due to weather at the Pocono Raceway… Well weather again played a role in yesterday’s race as they got the race going and ran 138 of the scheduled 160 before NASCAR had to red flag the race due to rain and then a little later declared the race over… When that happened Chris Buescher was in the lead sitting on pit road and was declared the winner… This was his first victory in the Sprint Cup Series after having captured the XFINITY Championship in 2015… Brad Keselowski finished second, followed by Regan Smith, Kevin Harvick and Tony Stewart rounding out the top 5….
