CHS

  • JV Football: Broome 16 – CHS 14… In JV football action last night at Wilder Stadium, the Clinton JV football team fell to Broome 16-14 in a postponed game from a couple of weeks ago… Broome returned the opening kickoff for a TD and added the 2-point conversion to take an early 8-0 lead… Titus Hood picked up the Red Devils first score early in the 2nd quarter to make it 8-6 as the extra point conversion failed… The Red Devils took the lead in the 2nd half on a 40 yard scoring pass from Layne Cunningham to Tguan Comer… Ty Priestly added the 2-point conversion to make the score 14-8 Red Devils… Unfortunately the Red Devils did not hold the lead as Broome scored the winning TD and 2-point conversion with less than 5 minutes to go in the game to make the final 16-14 as the Red Devils just could not respond… By the way, in action last Thursday night the JVs fell to Union County by a score of 14-0… The team will travel to Chester this Thursday for a 6:30 pm contest with the Cyclones
  • Tennis: CHS 7 – Emerald 0… In their final match of the regular season, the Red Devil tennis team took a 7-0 win over Emerald yesterday… Gracie Waldron, Mason Paige Gambrell, Elizabeth Jones, Molly Scarborough and Izzy Worley all took dominating wins in singles action over their opponent… Mary Katherine Kelly & Kayleigh Pitts teamed up to take as one-sided win as the #1 doubles team… Clinton took the final win of the match as Emerald defaulted in # 2 doubles action…. The team ended its season with a perfect 11-0 mark and will host Wren in the opening round of the AAA Playoffs which I think will be a week from this Thursday on the 29th.

LDHS

  • Alexus Moore participated in Upper State Golf Tournament.. The Raiders Alexus Moore had a score of 97 at the Upper State Girls Golf Tournament at Fox Run CC…  This score was equal to her score in last week’s Region I tournament also held at Fox Run… She placed in the top half of the field…Coach Jim Iacuone stated “She drove the ball well today and was good in the fairways. However she didn’t putt the ball as well as she had earlier in the season and that cost her some strokes. ..  I thought she had a really good season for us and she will definitely be a bright spot for our team next year as we transition to a new classification and region.”… Region I-AAAA had 3 of the four teams that qualified for Upper State advance to the State Tournament next week (Easley, Greenville and TL Hanna)… Mikela Duncan of Hillcrest was an individual qualifier for the state tournament.

Middle School

  • Volleyball Championship… Congratulations to the Hickory Tavern Panther volleyball team for winning the Little River Conference Tournament this past Saturday at HT…  The fist match of the day pitted #4 Sanders against #5 Laurens Middle with sanders coming out on top by a score of 2-1… The second match saw #2 seeded Clinton Middle take on #3 seeded Gray Court-Owings… In a very hard fought contest, Clinton Middle advanced to the championship match by defeating GCO 2-1… The third match saw the #1 seeded HT Panther take on the sanders and eliminate them by a score of 2-0… This set up the championship match with CMS… CMS & HT had split their series during the regular season and this would be for all the marbles… HT took the championship with a 2-0 win… For a more complete narrative of the contests, click on the following…  Making the all-tournament team were; Brianna Moore of LMS, Brianna Green of SMS, Alexis McWhorter of GCO, Chrishuna Brown of CMS and both Rachel Delio and Carlee Hornsby of HT… Again congratulations to HT and these young ladies.

Local Notes:

CHS

  • Union 36 – CHS 12… The Clinton Red Devils boarded the bus and traveled to Union to take on the Yellow Jackets in Region 3-AAA action and someone forgot to pack the flying insect spray as the Yellow Jackets racked up over 400 yards of offense and took a 36-12 win over the Red Devils… The Yellow Jackets rolled out to a 22-0 lead at the half as the Red Devil offense just could not get the game going… Part of the problem may have been the quickness & size of both the offensive and defensive line for Union… Coach Andrew Webb did not fault his team’s effort and though outmanned the team never quit… Evidence of that is that the last two scores of the game belonged to Clinton… Charlie Craven connected with Jasper Fuller on a 26 yard pass play with 6:30 left in the contest and with Jalen Carter on a 14 yard pass with 1:10 left in the game… The Red Devils return to the friendly confines of Wilder Stadium this Friday in their last regular season home game against the Chester Cyclones… It will also be Homecoming.

LDHS

  •  Hillcrest 28 – LDHS 7… The Laurens Raiders came into Friday night’s game with the Hillcrest Rams on a 4 game winning streak and for the 2.5 minutes it looked very much like the streak could well be extended to 5 games but that was not to be as the Rams handed the Raiders their first region loss defeating the Raiders by a score of 28-7… The Rams won the toss and elected to defer to the second half which gave the Raiders the ball first… The Raiders then drove 71 yards in 6 plays to score on a 28 yard pass from Toby Jackson to Kezario Whitmore with 9:39 left in the opening quarter… During the drive, Troy Dendy had the bulk of the yards on the ground including a 45 yard run…. Dendy would end the night with 100 of the Raiders net 121 yards rushing… Irvin Angeles added the PAT to give the Raiders their first and last lead on the night… After that, the Rams won the battle of field position picking up first downs before the Raider defense usually stopped them but putting the Raiders deep in their own territory when they regained possession… Hillcrest tied the game early in the 2nd quarter as the Raiders attempted a fake punt at their own 33 yard line on 4th and 3 situation and gained only 2 yard giving the Rams a short field which they capitalized on 4 plays later… Just before the end of the half Hillcrest scored again after going 50 yards in just 3 plays to go up 14-7… The Rams next score came when a Raider punt was partially blocked and fell into the hands of the Rams Brian Spurgeon who returned it 33 yards for the TD… The Rams last score came with 2:47 left in the game and came after the Rams held the Raiders on 4th and 3 at the Raider 15 yard line… It took them 7 plays to cover those 15 yards to get the final score with 2:47 left in the contest to make the final 28-7… The Raiders record now stands at 4-4 on the season and 3-1 in region play and they will travel to Westside to take on another set of Rams this Friday… For game stats, Hillcrest at Laurens Short Stats

Laurens Academy

  • Carolina Academy 62 – L.A. 26… The Laurens Academy Crusaders were also on the road last Friday night as they traveled to Lake City to take on the Carolina Academy Bobcats… The Bobcats used their ground oriented attack to take a 62-26 win over the Crusaders… The Bobcats led 32-12 at the half with the Crusaders scores coming on a quarterback keeper by Ryan Holmes and a 32 yard pass from Holmes to Josh Urwick… In the second half, the Holmes to Urwick combination connected again for another TD and Holmes again scored on a quarterback keeper… The Crusaders return home this Friday night to play Wardlaw… It will also be Homecoming for the Crusaders…

Allen Staton Named Player of the Year for the Johnson City Cardinals… Former Laurens Raider & North Greenville standout player Allen Staton was named player of the year for the Johnson City Cardinals… The infielder was signed by St. Louis in June as a non-drafted free agent and had a busy summer… After two weeks of dominating Gulf Coast League pitching, Staton was promoted to Johnson City, where he played in 42 games… Once the Cards fell out of playoff contention, the recently-turned 23-year-old topped off his rookie campaign with nine games at high-A Palm Beach…Despite his 163 at-bats being just sixth-most on the JC roster, 53 fewer than team-leader Magneuris Sierra, Staton posted team highs in home runs (nine) and RBI (44)…. The latter was 13 more than the next closest Cardinal and delivered at an impressive rate of just over one RBI per game… At .307, Staton was one of five Cardinals who hit .300 on the season… The others are Sierra (.315), Eliezer Alvarez (.314), Chris Chinea (.313) and Edmundo Sosa (.300). Staton’s performance across the board was unmatched, however, as he topped the club in slugging at .571 and OPS at .910. Staton.. Staton was a force to be reckoned with across the entire Appalachian League. Despite many fewer at-bats than most all of the other leaders, he finished in a tie for sixth in the rookie-level league in home runs and tied for fourth in RBI… Though his at-bat totals were too low to qualify, Staton’s slugging mark would have been second in the league and his OPS would have been sixth… Staton, a Laurens, South Carolina native, was named the Appalachian League Player of the Week for the week ending August 2nd… His performance at the plate that week helped the Cardinals soar to their longest winning streak in the last three seasons, and he produced the first four-hit game by a Cardinal since Casey Turgeon in 2014, and the first Cardinal grand slam since Chris Rivera, also in 2014.

  • Football: LMS 40 – CMS-W 38… In one whale of a football game yesterday at Laurens Middle School, the LMS Tigers took a 40-38 win over the Clinton Middle School White Wildcats with the winning score and two point-point conversion coming with just 5.3 seconds left in the game on a 45 yard pass from Ryan Campbell to Deonte Smith with same pair connecting for the winning 2-point conversion… The Wildcats got on the board first with 5:06 left in the first quarter when Austin Caughman completed a 48 yard TD pass to Konnor Richardson to cap a 95 yard drive… Rasheev Smith added the 2-point conversion to make the score 8-0… The Tigers wasted little time in getting the TD back as Deonte Smith returned the ensuing kickoff 67 yards for the TD… The 2-point conversion failed making the score 8-6…. It took the Wildcats just 2 plays to put points on the scoreboard again as Nigel Fant carried the ball on both plays with the last one being a 45 yard run for the score… The conversion failed and the Wildcats had a 14-8 lead with 5:02 still showing on the clock in second quarter… The Wildcats Riley McSwain picked off a Tiger pass very soon afterwards giving the Wildcats the ball at the Clinton 37 yard line… After a CMS penalty, Fant picked up his 2nd TD on a 67 yard run… Again the 2-point conversion failed and the Wildcats went up 20-6 with 4:07 left in the half… The Tigers then covered 60 yards in 4 plays to score again on a 24 yard TD pass from Campbell to Smith to make the score 20-12 with about 90 seconds left in the half… Clinton responded with another TD with seconds left in the half with Caughman connecting with Richardson for the second time (this time for 30 yards) and the score making it 26-12 Wildcats… The Wildcats left just enough time on the clock for the Tigers to get off 1 play which turned out to be a 61 yard scoring strike with Campbell again getting the ball to Smith as the clock ran out… This made the score 26-18 Wildcats at the half… The second half would prove to be just as exciting as the first.. Clinton took the opening kickoff and proceeded to drive in Tiger territory before coughing up the ball with D. Smith falling on it for the Tigers at their own 37 yard line… The Wildcats stopped the Tigers after a first down and forced them to punt but a roughing the kicker penalty gave the Tigers new life which they capitalized scoring a few plays later on a Campbell quarterback keeper from 1 yard out early in the final quarter… The score was now 26-24 with the Wildcats clinging to a 2 point lead… The Wildcats then stretched their lead out to 32-24 on the first play from scrimmage as Caughman hit Richardson on a 51 yard scoring toss the third TD of the day for the pair… LMS took only 5 plays to get back on the board as Campbell once again hit Smith for a TD this one a 45 yard score… Campbell then picked up an important 2-point conversion to tie the score with just over 4:30 left in the contest… The Wildcats then went on a long drive with Rasheev Smith carrying it the last 4 yards for the score… The critical 2-point conversion came up just short as the Wildcats now led 38-32 with 25.8 seconds left in the contest… The Tigers then had a 10 yard return on the kickoff to set them up on their own 45 yard line with the clock running down quickly… They hustled to the line of scrimmage and Campbell spiked the ball to stop the clock with 5.3 seconds left setting the stage for the final winning play of the game… The Wildcats now stand 2-1 on the season and 11 in conference play while the Tigers go to 2-1 overall and 2-0 in conference play.
