Sports Report for Monday, 5-17-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Tennis: Oceanside Colligate 6 – Clinton 0…  The Red Devil boys’ tennis team traveled down to Florence Tennis Center on Saturday for a championship match with the Oceanside Collegiate Landsharks… I believe if you don’t count last season when due to COVID there was not really a season, this marks the fourth time in as many years the Red Devils competed for the championship…The Red Devils came into the match with a perfect 14-0 record but when the match was over the Red Devil record was 14-1 as the Landsharks took a 6-0 win over the Red Devils… After the match some Red Devil fans might have wondered if the Landsharks actually had college players on their team as they pretty much dominated the Red Devils… Anders Orr came the closest to pulling out a win for the Red Devils as he lost to his opponent 6 – 4, 4 – 6, 10 – 4… Now if you would like to see the match details click here… Congratulations to Coach Simmons and the Red Devils on another outstanding season!
  • Baseball: Powdersville 14 – Clinton 3 (5)… The Red Devil baseball team opened up playoff action last Saturday traveling up to Powdersville to take on the #3 in the state ranked Patriots… The Red Devils took an early lead scoring 2 runs in the top of the first but the Patriots matched that in the bottom of the inning then added 3 more runs in the second, 6 in the third and 3 in fourth while the Red Devils could only muster 1 more run in the fifth as the Patriot took a 14-3 win over the Red Devils in five innings… Now I do not yet have the Clinton scoring of the game but according to the Powdersville scoring of the game the Red Devils got their 2 runs in the first after two outs when Kimon Quarles walked and went to second on a single by Wilson Wages…  They then both stole a base and were driven in on a 2-RBI single by Davidson Pitts… In the fifth Noah Reese and Trenton Gambrell both led the inning off with singles and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Jack Carroll… After that Reece scored on a sacrifice fly by Davis Wilson… Again according to the Powdersville scoring of the game, the Patriots outhit the Red Devils 12-5 and no Red Devil had over 1 hit… If I get the Clinton scoring of the game I will make that available to you.
  • Red Devils on the Road… The loss drops the Red Devils into the losers’ bracket and they will be on the road today traveling down to Mid-Carolina HS to take on the Rebels… First pitch is schooled for 6:00 pm… The Rebels lost to the Daniel Lions at home on Saturday by a score of 12-1 in 5 innings… They finished first in Region IV with an 8-0 record and I think their overall record is now 14-10… Mid-Carolina does have a place on their athletic website to purchase tickets for the game and if you click here it will carry you to that place… I do believe WPCC will be broadcasting the game… Go Big Red!

Laurens HS:

  • Raiders 4 – Copperheads 1… The Laurens Raider opened up postseason play Saturday at Ed Prescott Field by taking a 4-1 win over the Catawba Ridge Copperheads in a game that went right down to the wire… The Copperheads scored an unearned run in the top of the first inning and the Raiders tied the game with a run in the second inning… The Raiders scored 3 more in the fourth inning to go up 4-1 but the Copperheads did not roll over as they had the bases loaded with two outs in the top of the seventh inning… The Raiders starting pitcher Jackson Edwards was showing signs of tiring as his control was slipping plus he had reached his limit by rule for the game so Coach Tori Patterson called time and moved Zak Rice from catcher to pitcher to try and get the final out… Well the senior did just that as he struck out the last Copperhead in 6 pitches with the strikeout coming on a called strike to seal the Raider win… The Raiders run in the second inning came when Austin McNuer led the inning off with a single and later scored on a bad throw by the Copperheads… In the big fourth inning where the Raiders scored 3 runs and the key hits were a double by Sulli Pinson and RBI singles by Thomas Willis, Mason Hamby and Zak Rice… The Raiders outhit the Copperheads 11-2 and the Raiders were led at the plate by Mason Hamby who went 3 for 4 while Austin McNuer and Sulli Pinson who each had 2 hits… As previously mentioned Jackson Edwards went the distance except for the last out giving up the 1 unearned run and 2 hits while striking out 5 and walking 2… Zak Rice gets the big save at the end… To see the box score and associated statistics on the game click here and to see the game’s scorebook showing how the runs were scored click here.
  • Raiders at Home Today… The Raiders will be back in action today as they host the Demons of Lugoff-Elgin… The Demons took a 4-1 win over Easley Friday and finished second in Region IV-AAA with a 7-3 region record behind AC Flora who finished first in that region with a 10-0 region record…. Other than that I have been able to find very little information about the Demons at this time…Go Raiders!
