Local Notes

State SCHSL Playoffs

  • Rams win 5-A Championship… One semi-local note, last Friday night the Hillcrest Rams claimed the SCHSL Class AAAAA Baseball Championship with an 8-7 win over the Summerville Green Wave in Simpsonville… This comes on the heels of a 5-3 win over Summerville in Summerville last Tuesday… Of course the Rams are coached by former LDHS player and Coach Dale Nelson… The Rams finished the season with a 24-8 record and one of their losses was to the Laurens Raiders at Laurens 7-5 back in early May and then they took a 6-1 win over the raiders in Simpsonville three days later… Congratulations to Coach Nelson and the Rams!

PC Loses Two Straight in Regionals… The Blue Hose finished their regular season with a great run including winning the Big South Tournament in 3 games defeating Campbell twice this punching their ticket in the field of 64 making the playoffs but found themselves headed to Nashville to take on the #4 nationally ranked Commodores of Vanderbilt in their first regional game last Friday.

  • Friday: Vanderbilt 10 – PC 0… The Commodores scored 3 runs in the first and second innings and then went on to take a 10-0 win over the Blue Hose… Three Commodore pitchers held the Blue Hose to just 2 hits while 5 Blue hose pitchers gave up 14 hits including two homers.
  • Saturday: Indiana State 9 – PC 2… Then on Saturday the Blue Hose took on the Sycamores of Indiana State in an elimination game… The Blue Hose bats did better in this game as they got 5 hits scoring 2 runs but the Sycamores had 11 hits and scored 9 runs thus eliminating the Blue Hose form postseason play… Eric Toth led the Blue Hose at the plate with 2 hits one of them being a 2-run homer… The team finishes with a 22-23 overall record claiming their first ever Big South Tournament Championship and appearance in D-I postseason play.


South Carolina Eliminated… The South Carolina Gamecocks were also eliminated from the playoffs over the weekend as they managed to win just 1 of three games played in the regional they hosted.

  • Friday: Carolina 4 – Virginia 3… On Friday the Gamecocks took on the Virginia Cavaliers and came away with a 4-3 comeback win… The Gamecocks trailed 3-1 going into the bottom of the sixth inning where they plated 3 runs and then held on to take the 4-3 win… Wes Clarke had 2 of the Gamecocks six hits with one of them being a solo homer in the first inning.
  • Saturday: Old Dominion 2 – Carolina 1… Saturday night the Gamecocks took on the #11 nationally seeded Monarchs of Old Dominion… The game saw both teams use two pitchers each and between the 4 pitchers only 8 hits were given up with the Monarchs getting 5 of them… the Game was tied 1-1 going into the top of the eighth inning where the Monarchs scored what would prove to be the winning run on a bases loaded walk taking a 2-1 win over the Gamecocks.
  • Sunday: Virginia 3 – Carolina 2… South Carolina then had to take on Virginia again yesterday afternoon and the Cavaliers scored single runs in each of the first 3 innings to take a 3-0 lead… The Gamecocks were able to get a run in the sixth inning and another in the seventh but just could not get any other key hits with runners in scoring position as Virginia took a 3-2 win…  The team finishes the season with a 34-23 season record.


All Regional Winners Not Decided… Virginia also defeated Old Dominion 8-3 last night so the winner of the Columbia Regional will be decided tonight at 7:00 pm… A couple of other regionals are also going to be decided tonight and I’ll recap all regional winners tomorrow… In the meantime, click here to go to the interactive bracket on the NCAA website where you can check on the results to date in each regional.

D-I College Softball

  • College Softball World Series… The college softball season is now down to the final 8 teams that are playing in the D-I College Softball Tournament out in Oklahoma City… The final 8 teams are Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, James Madison, Georgia, UCLA, Alabama, Florida State and Arizona… The action starts June 3 and if you want to see the interactive brackets for the College Softball World Series click here… Once you get there click on the part of the bracket you are interested in and it will open showing matchups, scores of completed games, dates and times of games as well as TV viewing information

Pro Baseball

Braves…The Braves hosted the Los Angeles Dodgers in a 3-game series and its good news for Braves fans as they won all 2 out of3 games… They have tonight off and travel to Philadelphia for a 3-game series starting tomorrow.

  • Friday: Dodgers 9 – Braves 5…  The Braves outhit the Dodgers 7-4 but still lost despite Freddie Freeman getting his 13the homer of the season a solo shot in the first inning.
  • Saturday: Braves 6 – Dodgers 4… The Braves scored 5 runs in the third inning to go up 5-1 and then held on to take a 6-4 win as the Braves outhit the Dodgers 11-5.
  • Sunday: Braves 4 – Dodgers 2… Yesterday the Braves closed out the series with a 4-2 win over the Dodgers… Both teams had 7 hits

Drive… The Greenville Drive finished their 6 game series with the Ashville Tourist at Flour Field yesterday and after the final out the Drive had won 5 of the 6 games losing only the Thursday game to the Tourist 3-1… The Dive have tonight off.

  • Friday: Drive 10 – Tourist 3… The Drive outhit the Tourist 14-9… Leftfielder Devlin Granberg had 4 of the Drive’s 14 hits including a homer and a double and drove in 3 runs.
  • Saturday: Drive 6 – Tourist 3… Granberg was one of 3 Drive players getting 2 hits each and he again homered for the 6th time this season.
  • Sunday: Drive 15 – Tourist 3… The Drive simply feasted on Tourist pitching as they had 17 hits with 6 Drive players getting more than one hit… Shortstop Cameron Cannon had 4 of them ads he went 4 for 6 in the game.

This & That:

  •  Raider Kiddie Cheer Camp… Starting Monday, July 12yh and running through Wednesday, July 14th the Raider cheerleaders will be hosting a Kiddie Cheer Camp from 9:00 – noon each day… The camp is open to youth ages 3-12 (must be potty trained) and the cost is $60 per participant with each additional sibling only $40… Participant will get a camp T-shirt and receive snacks each day… Participants will be taught cheers, dances, jumps and stunts… Registration will end June 9th and late registration will be accepted but those registering after that date are not guaranteed a shirt… To register click here… If you have any questions contact Erin Patterson whose email address is:
