Sports Report for Wednesday, 9-8-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Girls Cross Country… Last Saturday the Red Devil cross country teams traveled up to Spartanburg to participate in the Eye Opener Meet… In the girls’ portion of the meet, the Red Devils competed against 44 teams which included 345 runners and finished 31st…  The top runner for the Red Devils was Elizabeth Reid who finished in 14th place with a time of 20:59 which is a personal best for her… Several other members of the team also finished with personal best and to see how not only the other Red Devil runners did but also how other teams finished click here.
  • Boys Cross Country… In the boys’ portion of the meet, the Red Devils finished 14th out of 51 teams in the competition which had 406 runners… The top runner for the Red Devils was Charlie Cody who finished 42nd with a time of 18:17 a season best for him… To see how the other Red Devil runners did click here
  • Information About Friday’s Game at Swansea… Clinton AD Louis Alexander announced Monday that tickets for the Red Devils game at Swansea this Friday will be sold online only, no tickets will be sold at the gate… If you wish to purchase tickets for the game click here… Clinton fans attending the game will park on the visitor’s side which is opposite the press box and enter through a gate on that side… The stadium address is: 718 Redmond Rd, Swansea, SC  29160… Kickoff is set for 7:30… Go Big Red.
  • JV Game Cancelled… Also it has been announced that there will be no JV game between the two schools this Thursday at Wilder Stadium… This is NOT due to any COVID issue it is simply because Swansea was unable to field a JV team this season due to low numbers of participant coming out for football.
  • Red Devil Volleyball Matches Today Postponed… Also from Clinton HS the Red Devils JV and varsity volleyball matches that were supposed to take place today at Ninety Six have been postponed due to an Abundance of Caution over COVID concerns… They will try to reschedule those matches at a later date in the season yet to be determined…

Laurens HS:

  • Todd Named TD Club Player of the Week… LDHS senior running back and linebacker Zy Todd has been chosen the Laurens County Touchdown Club Player of the Week for his performance last Friday night…  Laurens s defeated Union County Friday night 44-28 for the Raiders first win of the year… Zy Todd stepped up in a big way Friday night vs Union County… The Raiders were down 17 players Friday night and 10 of them were starters… Zy played both ways on offense and defense and played in over 100 plays on the night… Todd carried the football 9 times for 73 yards and scored 2 Touchdowns… Coach Daryl Smith cited Zy’s blocking in the game also in propelling the Raiders to their 16 point victory… Zy played on all special teams throughout the contest and very rarely came off the field… Defensively is where Zy made his presence known to the Union Yellow Jackets all night long as he recorded 10 tackles with 2 tackles for a loss in the contest… The Laurens County Touchdown Club acknowledges Zy’s toughness and endurance in the big win for the Raiders…The Laurens County Touchdown Club will honor Zy tomorrow at the next TD Club meeting… The meeting will be at noon at the Ridge… Also at this week’s meeting the Touchdown Club will honor week ones TD Club player of the week, Clintons Bryson James.
  • Raider Volleyball Matches Today Postponed… As you may recall, last week the Raiders paused their volleyball season out of an abundance of caution given the
  • JV & Varsity Games Cancelled… Just as reminder as announced earlier, the JV & varsity football games scheduled to be played this Thursday and Friday nights with Daniel will not be played… Again as with many other teams across the stare this is due to COVID concerns…

Laurens Academy:

  • Crusaders 3 – WW King 0… Yesterday the Crusader volleyball teams hosted the Knights of WW King… In varsity action the Crusaders took a 3-0 win over the Knights… Set scores were 25-11, 25-19 and in the third set the Crusaders held of the Knight by a final score of 26-24…
  • MS: Crusaders 2 – Knights 0…  In middle school action prior the varsity matches, the Crusaders were also victorious by a score of 2-0… Set scores were 25-19 and 25-23…. The Crusaders are scheduled to travel to Union Christian tomorrow.

Major League Baseball

  • Braves 8 – Nationals 5The Atlanta Braves started a home series with the Washington Nationals last night on a positive note as they took an 8-5 win… The Braves led the game 5-1 going into the top of the 7th inning when the Nationals plated four runs to tie the game… The Braves promptly scored two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain the lead and added another in the 9th to take the 8-5 win… Adam Duval (32) had a three-run homer in the 1st inning and Ozzie Albies (27) had a two-run homer in the 7th inning that would prove to be the winning runs.
  • Drive 7 – Crawdads 4 (10)… The Greenville Drive started a six-game series with the Hickory Crawdads up in Hickory last night on a positive note also as they took a 7-4 win but it took them 10 innings to do it… In the 10th inning Brandon Howlett (16) had a two=run homer for the Drive and Will Dalton drove in the other run with an RBI single…. Tyler Dearden also had a pair of homers in the game for the Drive giving h 21 round-trippers on the season.
