Sports Report for Thursday, 9-9-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Swansea Cancels, Red Devils Pick Up Calhoun County… This season it seems like just about every high school football team in South Carolina has been playing musical chairs with their football schedule… As I have already mentioned to you the Laurens Raiders have had to cancel their game with the Daniel Lions this week due to COVID restrictions and injuries, Clinton was idle last Friday night due to COVID problems with Newberry and believe it or not it happened to the Red Devils again yesterday… Swansea notified Clinton that they had a problem and could not play this Friday making it the second week in a row that Clinton’s opponent cancelled on them… I happened to be at LDHS yesterday talking with Raider Coach Daryl Smith and mentioned this and he said that some coach had put together an app on the internet where schools could post up their need for a game and then the schools could check that and see who was available… Well Coach Fountain or Coach Alexander might have checked that app because not too long after the cancellation was announced another announcement came out that Clinton was able to pick up the Calhoun County Saints and that they were willing to come to Clinton to play so the Red Devils will be playing at home tomorrow night… Stay tune ladies and gentlemen as we bring you more from the football game of musical chairs scheduling and in the meantime, Go Big Red.
  • Boys Cross Country Finishes First … Back on Tuesday the Red Devil cross country teams hosted a meet that included six other teams including Laurens… Good news for Red Devil fans as in the boys’ portion of the meet the Red Devils finished first… William Reid was the top runner for the Red Devils finishing 3rd overall with a time of 18: 52 … To see how other Red Devil runners did click here.

Major League Baseball

  • Nationals 4 – Braves 2In game two of their three-game series with the Nationals in Atlanta last night the Nationals took a 4-2 win over the Braves… The game was tied 2-2 going into the top of the 7th inning when the Nationals Juan Soto hit a towering homer (25) to right centerfield scoring what would prove to be the winning run… The Nationals added another run in the 8th inning on a ground-rule double by Luis Garcia… Both of the Braves runs came on solo homers by Adam Duvall (33) in the 4th inning and Eddie Rosario (9) in the 6th inning.
  • Drive 6 – Crawdads 2… The news is better for Greenville Drive fans as the Drive took a 6-2 win over the Hickory Crawdads in Hickory last night… The Drive trailed 2-1 going into the top of the 9th inning when with two out a bases loaded walk brought in one run for the Drive but that was then followed by the Drive’s second baseman Nick Yorke hitting only his second homerun of the season but it was big one as it as a grand slam making the score 6-2 as the Drive held the Crawdads scoreless in the bottom of the inning to take the win.
