Sports Report for Monday, 9-13- 2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Clinton 51 – Calhoun County 0… The Red Devils last week had Swansea HS cancel on them at mid-week and were able to get the Calhoun County Saints to come up and play at Wilder Stadium… The Saints are a Class A school while Clinton is a Class AAA school and more often than not that can make a difference in the outcome of the game especially when one school (Clinton) is a much improved school as the Red Devils white washed the Saints 51-0 last Friday… Sometimes when you go back and look at the stat sheet on a game a team that has that margin of victory may not have dominated all the stats but in this case the Red Devils did… 23 first down to 4 for the Saints… 406 total yards of offense to just 56 for the Saints… The only category I could find where the Saints excelled was kickoff returns where they had 7 for 67 yards while Clinton only had 2 for 36 yards… Well that makes sense as Clinton had to kickoff after all 7 of their scores… The Red Devils had 317 yards of rushing that was spread among 12 players with no player getting over 83 yards and that was by Jykorie Gary… Gary, Jishun Copeland, Bryson James, Zee Livingston and Danny Kinard each had a rushing TD… Davis Wilson went 4 for 6 and 90 yards in the passing department with Wilson Wages and Z. Johnston each catching 2 passes and each one of them had a TD pass from Wilson…  To see all the stats on the game and a play by play accounting of the game click here…. Clinton is scheduled to host the winless Blue Ridge Tigers this Friday night at Wilder stadium.

Laurens HS:

  • Raiders Off… Just a reminder that the Raiders were off last Friday night but that they plan on getting back into action this Friday night when they travel down to River Bluff to take on the Gators.

Laurens Academy:

  • Clarendon Hall 82 – Laurens Academy 14… A very young Crusader football team traveled down to Clarendon Hall last Friday night to take on the 2-0 Saints… I hate to have to report that the Crusader came up on the short end of an 82-14 score… The Crusaders scored in the first quarter when Buddy Baker had a 40 yard pick-sin with the two-point conversion coming on a pass from Garrett Murphy to Diamonte Grant… The other Crusader score also came in the first quarter when Garrett Murphy carried it in from 2 yards out but the two-point conversion failed… After the game acting Head Coach Travis Plowden said “I was very pleased in our 1st quarter performance and getting off to a better start then we have in the first three games…Things slid away in the second quarter and I wish I had done a better job of responding to the momentum change… I give a lot of credit to Clarendon they did a number of things to give us problems and have some really good players…  Although the game quickly got of hands we played hard and competed…Halftime Score: 60-14 CH…2nd Half “I our kids continued to battle and do they best they could in an overwhelming situation…Senior Leadership:  Cal Robertson and Diamonte Grant continue to greatly impress me with their leadership and toughness!   They are doing so well in helping a young team that needs leadership… Thankfully, they are providing that leadership”..  The Crusaders are scheduled to host the Cathedral Academy Generals out of North Charleston this Friday.

Ware Shoals

  • Hawks 21 – Hornets 14… The Ware Shoals Hornets played host to the Greenwood Christian Hawks at Tommy Davis Field last Friday night and they were just too nice a host as the Hawks took a 21-14 win over the Hornets… The Hawks jumped out to a 13-0 lead before the Hornets finally got on the board with 1:17 left in the first half when Ethan Moore carries it in from one yard out and the Hornets went for 2 points which they made when Jalen Coates carried it in to make it 13-8 Hawks at the half… That capped a short 16 yard drive that started when the Hawks committed their only turnover of the night, a fumble recovered by the Hornets Richard Crawford… The Hornets scored again on their first possession of the third quarter when Justice Lomax carried it in from 11 yards out but the PAT was missed making it 14-13 Hornets… Two possessions later the Hawks scored again and added a two point Pat to make it 21-14and held the Hornets the rest of the way… After the game Hornet Coach Chris Johnston was proud of the way his Hornets battled and they had their chances could not get the big play when needed… Three pass interceptions by the Hawks and over 80 yards in penalties were a big reason the Hornets had only 189 yards of total offense (166 yards rushing) while the Hawks had 336 yards of total offense with 222 of them coming on the ground… The Hornets travel to Whitmire to take on the Wolverines in region action this Friday night.

Braves… The Braves hosted the Miami Marlins in a three-game series in Atlanta over the weekend.

  • Friday: Braves 6 – Marlins 2… On Friday a big 5yh inning where the Braves scored 5 runs proved to be the key to the Braves taking a 6-2 win over the Marlins… The Braves only outhit the Marlins 8-7 and all of the Brave runs were scored playing small ball as the Braves did not have a homerun in the game.
  • Saturday: Marlins 6 – Braves 4… On Saturday the Marlins turned the tables taking a 6-4 win over the Braves… The Marlins took an early 3-0 lead and it was not until the 5yh inning that the Braves got on the board scoring 3 runs to tie the game… The Marlins than had a two solo homers in the 8th inning and scored another run in the 9th and held the Braves to just a single run in the 9th to take the 6-4 win… Again all the Braves runs were scored playing small ball as they were homerless in the game.

  • Saturday: Drive 7 – Crawdads 4… On Saturday the Drive continued their winning ways as they took a 7-4 win over the Crawdads outhitting them 12-10… Again homers were a big part of the Drive scoring as they had 3 of them… Stephen Scott (8) homered in the 4th inning, Brandon Howlett (17) in the 8th inning and Nick Yorke (4) in the 9th… Each of the homers were two-run homers.
  • Sunday: Drive 4 – Crawdads 3… Yesterday the Drive pulled the brooms out of the equipment bag as they made it a sweep of the Crawdads taking a 4-3 win… Hickory outhit Greenville 13-8 and the game was tied 3-3 going into the top of the 9th inning… In that inning Christian Koss had his 15 the homer of the season and then the Drive held on to take the 4-3 win… Earlier in the game Tyler Dearden 24) had a 2-run homer to help the Drive cause…  The Drive will also have tonight off.
