Sports Report for Tuesday, 9-14-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Gary Picked as TD Club Player of the Week… Yesterday it was announced that Clinton’s Jykorie Gary has been name the Laurens County Touchdown Club’s Player of the Week for his performance last Friday night in the Red Devils 51-0 win over the Calhoun County Saints at Wilder Stadium… Gary played on both offense and defense and on offense carried the ball 9 times for a team leading 83 yards and scored one touchdown… On defense he was credited with 5.5 tackles 4 of which were for a loss… He was also often seen putting pressure on the Saints quarterback whom he did manage to sack one time… He also returned a kickoff for 16 yards… Jykorie will be honored at the next meeting of the Touchdown Club which will take place on September 23rd at The Ridge where former Red Devil and Clemson Tiger Al Richard will be the featured speaker… The meeting will start at noon and tickets are available at the door for $15.

Broadcast Schedule: Below is a list of dates, times and teams that we plan on broadcasting live on Real Radio WLBG… And as usual you can hear it live on 860AM, 104.1 FM and the internet at www.wlbg.com… All of the following are weather and COVID dependent and are varsity games… If it is a varsity football game, coverage will begin about 6:05 pm with the Friday Night Insiders program.

College Notes:

  • FBS AP College Football Rankings… The latest AP Poll for college football FBS division has a little shakeup in the top 10… Alabama and Georgia are still ranked #1 and #2 respectively but Oklahoma jumped a spot to #3 while Oregon moved from #12 to #4 and Iowa moved up from #10 to #5… Clemson still checks in at #6 while Texas A&M drops from #5 to #7… Cincinnati dropped a spot to #8, Ohio State dropped from # 3 to #9 with its 35-28 loss to Oregon and Penn State rounds out the top 10 moving up a spot to #10… Coastal Carolina moved up a spot from #17 to #16… To see the entire AP Poll click here.
  • FCS Coaches Poll… The FCS Division Coaches Poll had very little change in the top 10 spots as Sam Houston and James Madison continue to hold down the top two spots… The only South Carolina team in the poll is Furman which checked in at #25 this week…. Charleston Southern did get some votes but not enough to crack the top 25… To see the entire poll click here.

Major League Baseball

  • Braves… The Braves were off last night and now have a season record of 76-66 which has them in first place in the NL East 4.5 games ahead of second place Philadelphia… They will start a three-game home series with the Colorado Rockies tonight.
  • Greenville Drive… The Greenville Drive were also off last night… They begin their final six-game series of the season tonight up in Aberdeen, Maryland taking on the Aberdeen Ironbirds… The Iron birds are a Baltimore Oriole farm club that just happens to be owned by Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr… The Drive are 63-51 as they go into the final series of the season while the Ironbirds are 56-57 on the season.

  • Single Game Football Tickets on Sale at CHS… Information has been released concerning the purchase of individual contest tickets for home contest at Clinton HS and Clinton MS… The preferred method of sale for all athletic contests at both schools will still be online but a few tickets for varsity football will be offered for sale at 4 local businesses… There will also be a very few tickets for sale at the ticket booth the day of the contest… For more information on this I encourage you to click here to go to the CHS Athletic website where there is a posting that gives you much more information about this including price, the businesses where the varsity football tickets can be purchased,  procedure to purchase online tickets and much more… Please check it out… Go Big Red!
