Sports Report for Friday, 10-8-2021

Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • JV Football: Clinton 22 – Broome 6… The Red Devil JV football team hosted the Broome Centurions last night at Wilder stadium and they remain undefeated as they took a 22-6 win… Sorry no other details at this time… If I get some later I will pass them on to you.
  • Red Devils on the Road Tonight… A quick reminder that the Red Devil varsity football team will be on the road tonight taking on the Centurions… Broome comes into the contest with a 2-4 overall record and 0-1 in region play… Their two wins have been against Chesnee (48-41) and Robbinsville, NC 46-43… Their non-region losses have been to Powdersville (28-46), Indian Land (33-510 and Landrum 97-69)… Their region loss was to Emerald (28-41)… Of course the Red Devils come into the game 6-0 and 1-0 in the region… Go Big Red!

Laurens HS:

  • JV Football: Greenville 18 – Laurens 6… The Laurens Raiders hosted the Greenville Red Raiders last night at KC Hanna Stadium… The Raiders had trouble on special teams and with fumbles as they fell to the Red Raiders 18-6… Grenville’s first score came on a short 2yard run that was set up when the snap to the punter sailed over his head and he fell on it at the Raider 2 yd. line where Greenville cashed it in on the next play… The Raiders only score came with 44.3 seconds left in the first quarter when Nick Fowler carried it in from the 13 yard line and with the missed PAT the score stood 6-6… Greenville scored on their next drive and again in the third quarter when again a high snap sailed over the Raider punter’s head and gave Greenville a short field at the Raider 15 yard line where the Red Raiders again cashed it in on the next play to make the score 18-6 Greenville… The Raiders drove deep into Greenville territory early in the fourth quarter but a pass interception killed that drive and the Raider never really threatened again.
  • JV Volleyball: Eastside 2 – Laurens 0… The Raider volleyball teams closed out the home portion of their regular season last night hosting the Eastside Eagles… In JV action, the Eagles took a 2-0 win over the Raiders… Set scores were 25-16 and 25-20… Emma Liner had 15 kills for the Raiders and ZaKhia Davenport had 9 digs.
  • Varsity Volleyball: Laurens 3 – Eastside 1… Now the news is better where the varsity squad is concerned as they took a 3-1 win over the Eagles… The Raiders won the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-19… The Raiders let their guard down a bit in the third set as the Eagles came back to take a 25-18 win… The fourth set was a close one with the Raiders trailing late in the match but they came back to take a 25-23 win to take the match… For the Raiders Callie Wzorek had 32 assist, 3 aces, 12 digs and 6 kills… Mattie Strange had 20 digs and 20 kills while Aubrey Wardell finished the match with 9 digs…The Raiders will travel to Greer next Thursday for their final regular season match.
  • Senior Night… Now since last night was the final home match of the regular of the season the Raiders took time to honor their four seniors before the match… The Raiders four seniors are Callie Wzorek (11), Micha Robertson (8), Anna Taylor (#2) and Mattie Strange (16)… Congratulations to these seniors and good luck in the future!
  • Raiders Idle Tonight… Just a quick reminder that the Raider varsity football team will be off tonight as they are dealing with COVID issues… If as goes as planned, the Raider will be traveling to Eastside nest Friday night.

Laurens Academy

  • Volleyball… Now I need to report two nights worth of volleyball involving the Laurens Academy Crusaders.
    • Tuesday… Back on Tuesday the Crusaders traveled to Richard Winn to take on the Eagles… It was a good night for the Crusaders as in middle school action they took a 2-0 win and the varsity made it a sweep of the Eagles as they took a 3-0 win… Sorry no other details.
    • Last Night… The Crusaders were back on the road last night as they traveled to WW King to take on the Knights…In middle school action, the Crusaders won 2-0… In varsity action e other piece of information I have about the varsity match is that the Crusaders took a 17-15 win over Knights which means that the two teams went a little longer battling to the wire as you normally stop at 15 but you have to win by 2 and it took a couple of extra volleys to win the set and match.. Way to go Crusaders!
  • Homecoming Tonight at Laurens Academy… A reminder that the Crusader varsity football team will be at home tonight taking on the Jefferson Davis Raiders… The Raiders come into tonight’s game with an 0-2 record as they have been dealing with COVID issues… The Crusades and the Raiders have played one opponent in common as they both lost to Holly Hill… Jeff Davis lost 62-6 while the Crusader lost to Holly Hill 60-0… By the way it is Homecoming tonight so come on out and cheer the Crusaders on to a win and see who is crowned Homecoming Queen.

Ware Shoals

  • Hornets at Home Tonight… The Ware Shoals Hornets will play host to the Calhoun Falls Charter School Flashes tonight at Tommy Davis Field… The Flashes have no wins on the season and the Hornets have one and it came at the start of the season when Ware Shoals traveled to Calhoun Falls for a non-region game and came home with a 24-12 win over the Flashes… Tonight’s game will be a region game… Go Hornets!

Middle School Football… There was some middle school football action around  the area yesterday and all I can tell you about the games is the final score.

  • Whitmire 40 – Hickory Tavern 0… The HT Panthers traveled to Whitmire yesterday and the news is not good for Panther fans as Whitmire took a 40-0 win
  • St Joe’s 22 – Sanders 0
  • WW King 34 – Laurens Academy 28… The Laurens Academy Crusader MS football team took on the Knights of WW King down in Saluda and the game went back and forth and down to the wire and I hate to have to report the Crusaders fell 34-28.
