Local Notes:

Clinton HS:

  • Clinton 47 – Broome 14… The Clinton Red Devils traveled up to Broome last Friday night to take on the Centurions and came home with a 47-14 win to run their record to 7-0…. The win helped to make up a lot of heartaches the Red Devils have had when playing Broome lately… The Red Devils sored TDs the first 4 times they touched the ball and carried a 27-7 lead into the locker room at the half… Broome scored one TD in the third quarter and then the Red Devils put 20 insurance points on the board in the fourth quarter… Clinton had 456 yards of total offense to Broome’s 328 with 352 yards of it coming on the ground while Broome had only 90 yards rushing… Jishun Copeland led the Red Devils with 105 yds. rushing and 1 TD while Jykorie Gary had 92 yds. rushing and 2 TDs… Jayden Robinson and Davis Wilson each had a rushing TD… Wilson completed 7 of 9 passes with no interception including a TD pass to Jayden Robinson… The Red Devil defense picked off 4 Centurion passes including a 25 yd. pick-six by Justin Copeland…. Laurens Academy

  • Laurens Academy 66 – Jeff Davis 30… The Laurens Academy Crusaders picked up their first win of the season Saturday afternoon as they defeated the Jeff Davis Raiders 66-30 in a game that was postponed until noon on Saturday due to a very wet Todd Kirk Field Friday… The Crusaders scored early and often as they opened the game scoring 22 unanswered points rolling to a 50-16 lead at the half and then went on to take the 66-30 win with a running clock in the second half… The Crusaders were led by their freshman quarterback Garrett Murphy who rushed for two TDs (20 & 3 yds.) and ran in 5 two-point conversions… He also had six TD passes… Clarence Bertoli who was back for his first game of the season coming off an injury caught 3 of (49, 43 & 38 yds. long) which were inside shuttle passes that he broke loose for the score on… Diamonte Grant caught 2 TD passes one of 47 yds. and the other 24 yds. long… Cal Robertson had the other TD pass which he broke for a 90 yd. score… He also caught a 2-point conversion pass from Murphy… The Crusader defense played well all day long and even scored when Jared Willard scooped up a Raider fumble and carried it to the house for a 51 yd. TD… The Crusaders are now 1-6 on the season and will travel to WW King this Friday night.

Major League Baseball

Braves… The Braves opened the playoffs with the Milwaukee Brewers over the weekend in Milwaukee and the results were as follows:

  • Friday: Brewers 2 Braves 1… On Friday the Brewers took a 2-1 win scoring 2 runs in the bottom of the 7th inning on a two-run homer by Rowdy Tellez and the Braves could only counter with a solo homer by Joc Penderson in the 8th inning as the Brewers took a 1-0 lead in the best of 5 series.
  • Saturday: Braves 3 – Brewers 0… Saturday the Braves got 6 strong innings from starter Max Fried as he and 3 relievers limited the Brewers to just 6 hits and no runs as the Braves rebounded to take a 3-0 win over the Brewers to even the series at a game apiece… The Braves scored two runs in the 3rd inning on an RBI single by Freddie Freeman and an RBI double by Ozzie Albies and another run in the 6th inning on a solo homer by Austin Riley.
  • Series Shifts to Atlanta…  After taking yesterday off, the series will no shift to Atlanta for two games with the first one today at 1:07 pm and the second game tomorrow at 5:07 pm.

  • Single Game Football Tickets on Sale at CHS… Information has been released concerning the purchase of individual contest tickets for home contest at Clinton HS and Clinton MS… The preferred method of sale for all athletic contests at both schools will still be online but a few tickets for varsity football will be offered for sale at 4 local businesses… There will also be a very few tickets for sale at the ticket booth the day of the contest… For more information on this I encourage you to click here to go to the CHS Athletic website where there is a posting that gives you much more information about this including price, the businesses where the varsity football tickets can be purchased,  procedure to purchase online tickets and much more… Please check it out… Go Big Red!
