Sports Report for Tuesday, 10-12-2021

Local Notes:

Laurens Academy:

  • Grant Named TD Club Player of the Week… As you may recall yesterday I reported that the Laurens Crusaders picked up their first win of the season last Saturday when they defeated Jefferson Davis 66-30 at Todd Kirk Field… Well because of his performance in that game, senior Diamonte Grant was chosen as the Laurens County Touchdown Club player of the Week… As he does each week Diamonte played both tight end on offense and defensive end on defense while also staying on the field on special teams… Last week he caught four passes for a total of 127 yards and two of his catches were for TDs… One of them was a 24 yard TD pass and the other a 47 yard TD pass… On defense he was credited with five tackles one of which was for a loss and also caused a fumble… Coach Todd Kirk commented about him “Each and every Friday night the Crusaders can depend on Grant…  Always physical at the point of contact and is always in the mix on just about every play… Diamonte is a quiet leader who leads the Crusaders by example… Diamonte is an amazing athlete who shows up big every Friday night for the Crusaders”… Diamonte will be honored at the next meeting of the Laurens County TD Club at noon on October 21st at The Ridge on Exchange Drive.
  • Homecoming…. One thing I failed to mention yesterday (because I did not have time) about the Laurens Academy football game last Saturday is  that it was also Homecoming and the Homecoming Queen and Class Princesses were crowned at halftime… Maggie Collins was crowned Freshman Princess, Lillie Davenport Sophomore Princess, Stella Smith Junior Princess and Payton Breen Senior Princess… Senior Elissa Hucks was crowned the 2021 Homecoming Queen. Congratulations to all these young ladies as well as the others who were in the Homecoming Court!

Ware Shoals

  • Ware Shoals 34 – Calhoun Falls 14… In a game that was delayed from Friday night due to a wet field, the Ware Shoals Hornets defeated the Calhoun Falls Flashes by a score of 34-14 at Tommy Davis Field… Ware Shoals scored the first time they got the ball and were never really stopped by the Flashes but were stopped a few times by penalties, fumbles and busted plays… Calhoun Falls was stopped on multiple occasions by the Hornets defense but they also had a problem in the penalty and busted play department… Ware Sholas led 22-14 at the half and then scored six points in each of the last two quarters to make the final 32-14… Hornet’s freshman Dalton Boyter had TD runs of 1 and six yards and also completed a TD pass of 23 yards… Jalen Coates also had a 17 yd. TD run for the Hornets and Justin Lomax had a 1 yd. TD run and a pair of two-point conversions… The Hornets are now 2-5 on the season and the win assured them of a spot in this year’s playoffs baring any disaster (COVID at the end of the season)…. They will travel to McCormick to take on the Chiefs in another region game this Friday night.
