Sports Report for Thursday, 1-13-2022

Local Notes:

Clinton HS… The Red Devil varsity basketball teams finally got to open region play last night as they traveled to Union HS to take on the Yellow Jackets in games that were postponed from last week.

  • Girls: Union 41 – Clinton 38… In girls’ action, the Yellow Jackets took a 41-38 win over the Red Devils… Coach John Gardner commented afterwards “we came out rusty tonight and just could not get over the hump”… The reason he said that is that the Red Devil led 8-7 after one quarter of play but were outscored by Union 14-8 in the second quarter to trail 21-16 at the half… The Red Devils managed to shave one point odd the Union lead in each of the last two quarters but just could not as he said “get over the hump”…. He said he was “proud of the effort especially since they were missing Tinique Austin and was proud of Taneal Evans” who led the team with a game-high 14 points… Also scoring for the Red Devils were Ry’Daija Mars with 7 points, Grayson Taylor 6, Payton Price-Walker 5, Dana Kinard 4 and Bryanna Belton 2…The team is now 8-4 on the season and 0-1 in region play.
  • Boys: Union 78 – Clinton 54… In boys’ action, the Red Devils offense came out a little rusty also as they scored less than 10 points in the first and third quarters while the Yellow Jackets scored at least 20 points in each of the same two quarters and then went on to take a 78-54 win over the Red Devils… Union had two players scoring in double-digits with their senior guard Jabryson Hunter having a game-high 19 points and Kevon Hughes had 11 points… The Red Devils were led in scoring by Taliek Fuller’s 12 points… Austin Copeland finished with 9 points, Tylon Scurry 8, Jamon Golden 7, Caleb Taylor 6, Jykorie Gary 3 and Christopher Young 2… The Red Devils are now 7-3 overall and 0-1 in region play.
  • COVID Postpones Friday’s Games… The COVID bug has once again forced one of Clinton’s opponents to postpone their games with the Red Devils… The Red Devils were scheduled to host the Chapman Panthers tomorrow night but due to a COVID problem in the Panther basketball programs those games have been postponed and as of this posting no makeup date had been set.

Laurens HS… The Raider JV and C-team both traveled down to Greenwood Tuesday night to take on the Eagles

  • JV: Raiders 31- Eagles 26… In the JV game, the Raiders trailed 22-15 going into 4th quarter but came back and outscored the Eagles 16-4 in the final 6 minutes to take a 31-26 win.    TyJ Jones led the Raiders in scoring with 16 points and Hunter Nabors was also in double-digits with 11…. Malik Simpson finished with 4 points.
  • C-team: Raiders 48 – Eagles 27…Sorry no details on this game.

Laurens Academy… Last night out at Laurens Academy the Crusaders middle school and varsity boys’ teams hosted the Anderson Christian Lions in a pair of games.

  • Varsity Boys: Crusaders 75 – Lions 41… In varsity boys’ action, the Crusaders outscored the Lions 25-7 in the first quarter and then never looked back as they rolled to a 75-41 win over the Lions… The Crusaders had four players scoring in double-digits and were led by Buddy Baker who finished with 19 points as did the Lions’ Rosco Barbosa… The other three Crusaders scoring in double-digits were Diamonte Grant with 18 points, Jared Willard 16, and Colton McGee with 10… Others scoring for the Crusaders were Anthony Candelas with 6 points, Cal Robertson with 4 and Dimitri Wells 2…The Crusaders are now 10-7 on the season and 5-1 in region play.
  • MS Boys: Crusaders 26 – Lions 19… The game was close in the first half as the score was tied 13-13 at its end… Braydon Burke game-high 16 points to lead the Crusaders in scoring… Hunter Campbell finished with 3 points while Elias Littleton, Landon James, and Elijah Horneberger all finished with 2 points… Ethan Collins rounded out the Crusader scoring with 1 point…. The team improved its record to 6-4 overall and 5-1 in region play.
