Countdown to Kickoff

  • Clinton, Laurens Academy & Laurens… The number of days until August 19th when the Red Devils host Batesburg-Leesville the Crusaders host the Augusta Eagles and the Raiders travel to Hillcrest for the first football games of the season is 25
  • PC… The number of days until Saturday, September 3rd when Presbyterian College travels to Clarksville, TN to take on Austin Peay at 7:00 pm is 40
  • South Carolina… The number of days until Saturday, September 3rd when the Gamecocks host Georgia State at 7:30 pm is 40
  • Clemson… The number of days until Monday, September 5th when Clemson travels Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta to take on Georgia Tech at 8:00 pm is 42

MLB Baseball

  • Braves Weekend Results… The Braves hosted the LA Angels over the weekend in a 3-game series.
    • Friday: Braves 8 – Angels 1… The Braves broke open a scoreless game by scoring 7 runs in the 7th inning and then going on to an 8-1 win over the Angels… In the big 7th inning Matt Olson (18) had a 2-run homer and Orlando Arcia (5) had a 3-run homer…. The Braves final run came on a solo home by Marcell Ozuna (18) in the 8th inning.
    • Saturday: Braves 7 – Angels 2… On Saturday the Braves took an early 5-0 lead before the Angels were able to get on the scoreboard with single runs in the 4th and 5th innings as the Braves went on to take a 7-2 win… The Braves outhit the Angels 11-8 with Austin Riley going 3 for 4 with a 2-run homer in the 4th inning… The Braves did have a “loss” during the game as Adam Duval will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn tendon sheath in his left wrist…  He suffered the injury when he jammed his left wrist against the wall while pursuing a foul ball in the first inning of Saturday night’s game against the Angels.
    • Sunday: Angels 9 – Braves 1… Then yesterday the Angels outhit the Braves 13-6 and all the Braves hits were singles as the Angels took a 9-1 win over the Braves to avoid being swept in the series… Ronald Acuna Jr. was the only Braves with more than 1 hit as he went 2 for 5.
    • Up Next for the Braves…The Braves are now 58-39 on the season and in second place in the NL East 1.5 games behind the Mets and will travel to Philadelphia to start a 3-game series with the Phillies tonight at 7:05 pm… The Phillies are in third place in the NL East with a record 49-46.

  • Greenville Drive Weekend Results… The Greenville Drive hosted the Aberdeen IronBirds in a 3-game series over the weekend… The IronBirds are a Baltimore Oriole affiliate out of Aberdeen, Maryland owned by Cal Ripken Jr. which had a 54-33 record coming into Friday night’s game.
    • Friday: Ironbirds 9 – Drive 4… In the first game on Friday, the IronBirds took a 9-5 win over the Drive in a game that saw both teams have 12 hits… The IronBirds did out-homer the Drive 3-0.
    • Saturday: Drive 8 – IronBirds 6… On Saturday the Drive rebounded to take an 8-6 win over the Ironbirds… The Drive outhit the Ironbirds 10-9 and 2 of the Drive’s hits were homers as Joe Davis (16) had a 3-run homer in the 3rd inning and Phillip Sikes (3) had a 2-run homer in the 4th inning.
    • Sunday: Ironbirds 7 – Drive 5… Yesterday the IronBirds took a 7-5 win over the Drive outhitting the Drive 10-9… The Drive did have 2 errors that aided the IronBirds… The Drive also had 2 solo-homers in the game… One by Phillip Sikes (4) and the other by Matthew Lugo (11)… The Drive will have tonight off.
  • Greenville Drive Schedule and Results … The Greenville Drive are taking a few days off just like the big leagues and will not return to action until Friday, 7-22-22 when they host the Aberdeen IronBirds in a 3-game series…If you want to check on the Drives schedule which includes information about completed games, current and future games click here.

NASCAR

  • NASCAR Disqualifies Top 2 Cars in Cup series Race at Pocono… If you are a casual NASCAR fan you might have gone to bed thinking that Denny Hamlin finished first in the Cup Series Race at Pocono yesterday afternoon and Kyle Busch second… The post-race inspection by NASCAR found problems with the front fascia of both cars belonging to Joe Gibbs Racing and it was enough to disqualify them… That means that Chase Elliott was declared the winner and Tyler Reddick finished second… Joe Gibbs can appeal the decision but must file the appeal by noon on Monday….   • Driver Standings… After being declared the winner at Pocono Sunday, Chase Elliot remains atop the Cup Series Driver standings with 787points… Ross Chastain is still second (682) and Joey Logano mover up the third (599)…To see the driver complete list of driver standings click here…Once you get there you can filter by the NASCAR Series you are interested in.
  • NASCAR at Indianapolis Speedway This Weekend… All three of the major NASCAR Series will be racing up at the Indianapolis Speedway this weekend… The Camping World Truck Series will race at 9:00 pm on Friday while the Xfinity series will race on Saturday at 3:30pm… The Cup Series will take to the track on Sunday at 2:30… To see the TV schedule for the practices, qualifying and the races as well as TV viewing for this weekend click here.

NFL

  • Panther Training Camp Dates Announced… The panthers have announced that once again they will be returning to Wofford College for the training camp… The camp will be the traditional camp with practices open to the public and other experiences planned for the fans… The team will report to Wofford on Tuesday, July 26th with the first practice taking place at 11:15 am on Wednesday, July 27th… If you click here it will take you to the Carolina Panther website where you will find more information about the camp including but not limited to the camp practice schedule… Football season is getting closer!



This & That:

Meet the Raiders…  Now I have a date that Raider fans may want to mark on their Calendars and that date is Saturday, August 13th… On that date LDHS Athletics will be hosting a Meet the Raiders Event at KC Hannah Stadium starting at 6:00 pm and ending at 9:00 pm… There will be a Parade of Athletes for all the fall sports as well as team sports sales, food and local vendors… This is a great opportunity to meet all the fall sports athletes and pick up some team merchandise… If you want more information about this event or would like to be one of the local vendors contact Coach Kelsey Harp (kdharp@laurens55.org) or Erin Patterson (eopatterson@laurens55.org)

 


Soccer Registration at Clinton YMCA… Registration is now open for fall Soccer at the Clinton YMCA… There will be 3 age appropriate playing divisions (3-5, 6-8 and 9-12 as of 9-22)… Games will be held at PC on Monday, Tuesday and/or Thursday at 5:00 pm… The cost will be $60 per participant for Y members and $75 for non-member and the registration deadline is August 19th and financial aid is available… If they have room after August 19th and before the games start on September 19th you might be able to register your child but there will be a $10 late fee after August 19th… For the 3-5 age group, they will only meet once a week on Mondays and registration is half price… If you have any questions call the Clinton YMCA at 833-1555
