Sports Report for Friday, 11-18-2022

Local Notes:

Clinton HS

  • Clinton Host Chapman Tonight… The Red Devil football team will be back in action tonight as they hoist the Chapman Panthers in Round 3 of the Class AAA Playoffs… Chapman started off their season going 1-4 with their last loss being to Clinton back on 9-16-22 when they lost to the Red Devils19-49… Since then, they have won 7 games in a row and have an 8-4 record coming into tonight’s game and finished 1st in Region III-AAA… They are averaging 32 points per game while giving up 21.7 points per game… The Red Devils are of course undefeated and are averaging 48.2 points per game while giving up 17.3 points per game… The two schools have had 4 common opponents this year in addition to playing each other… If you would like to see who those common opponents were, the complete schedule and results for each team as well as some other information about the teams, click here… Remember the game starts at 7:30, Tickets are $10 each for anyone coming through the gate and only South Carolina High School League passes will be accepted (no district or season ticket holder passes will be accepted as per SCHSL rules)… Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Girls Basketball… According to the Laurens HS sports calendar, the Lady Raider varsity basketball team will be participating in the Woodruff Coach Varner Classic starting tomorrow morning at 10:00 am… I don’t know the opponent or even if that time is correct… I’ll try to confirm that today and then Tweet out more detail on my Twitter Account AM860Mike.
  • Raider Boys Basketball Hosting Tip Off Fundraiser Dinner… The Raider Boys Basketball team will host a fundraising dinner on November 27th at 4:00 pm… This event will be held at The Ballroom which is located at 241 S. Harper Street Ext. in Laurens… The cost per person is $50 or for a table of 8 is $350… The guest speaker will be Devon Smith, author of the book “How a Roundball Shaped My Life”, and a catered meal will be included… All proceeds from this event will help offset the costs of uniforms, equipment, and travel for the boys’ basketball team… Contact Coach Armond Flood at apflood@laurens55.org for more information… Click here to purchase your tickets for this event.

Laurens Academy… Last night the Laurens Academy Crusaders opened up their basketball season hosting the New Covenant School Cavaliers.

  • Girls: N.C. 50 – LA 45… In varsity girls’ action, the Cavaliers took a 50-45 win over the Crusaders… The Cavaliers only led 14-13 at the end of the first quarter but stretched that lead to 29-19 at the half… As a team, the Cavaliers were a little taller than the Crusaders and substituted freely to keep fresh players on the court… The score was 39-29 at the end of the 3rd quarter and the Crusaders did outscore the Cavaliers 16-11 in the final 8 minutes of the game to make the final 50-45 but just could not come all the way back… Olivia Huck had a game-high 29 points to lead the Crusaders going 15 of 17 from the free throw line and making 2 three-point goals… Hanna Ervin, Madisyn Graham and Emily Suttles each finished with 4 points for the Crusaders while EK Moore and Rylee Ballard each had 2 points.
  • Boys: LA 35 – N.C. 20… The varsity boys opened their season with a 35-20 win over the Cavaliers… Both teams had trouble getting their offense going in the first half as the score stood 9-8 Crusaders going into the locker rooms at the half… The Crusaders came out hot in the third quarter outscoring the Cavaliers 17-4 to make the score 26-12 Crusaders and then went on to the win… The Cavaliers Townes Sconyers led all scorers with 12 points… The Crusaders were led by Jarred Willard who finished with 9 points…Brandon Burke and Clarence Bertoli both finished with 6 points, Andrew Codington 5, Buddy Baker 3, Hector Rubio 2, Garrison Vaughn 2 and Garrett Murphy 1
  • Middle School… The middle school boys lost by a score of 18-12 with Evan Asalone leading the team scoring 4 points… Chesnee Watkins and Caleb Hardy each had 3 points and while Elias Littleton finished with 2…. I also heard the middle school girls lost but I do not know any details on the game.
  • Up Next… The Crusader varsity teams are scheduled to travel up to Spartanburg Day School tonight to take on the Griffins with the girls’ game starting at 6:30 pm and the boys about 7:30… Good Luck to the Crusaders.

  • Football… The Blue Hose football team will wrap up its season on the road Saturday as they travel to Deland, FL to take on the Stetson Hatters… The Blue Hose are 1-9 on the season while the Hatters are 3-6 on the season… To see the football schedule, results and recaps of all completed games for the Blue Hose, click here.
  • Men’s Basketball… The men’s’ basketball team is off to a 1-3 start losing the last 3 games after opening the season with a win… They will be back in action next Monday (11-28) when they travel to Daytona Beach, FL to take on Bucknell in a 2:00 pm contest….   • College Playoff Rankings… The College Playoff Rankins were updated Tuesday (11-15-22)… The top 4 are the same as they were when the initial rankings came out and are all undefeated…they are in order from 1-4 are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee is still #5 but LSU has moved up a spot to #6 and former #6 Oregon has dropped all the way to #12… Clemson moved up a spot from #10 to #9… To see the entirety of this ranking click here.
  • FBS AP Top 25… In the latest AP Poll for DI College Football had no changes in the top 5 compared to last week… The top 5 are still Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan, TCU and Tennessee… Clemson did move up from #12 to #9… To see the entire poll click here.
  • FCS Coaches Poll… Now for the real college football junkies out there, the latest FCS Coaches Poll still has South Dakota State still is at #1 and Sacramento State is still #2…To see the entire poll click here… Furman has moved up from #16 to #13.

This & That:

 Laurens County Touchdown Club… Once again this football season the Laurens County TD Club will be meeting every other Thursday at noon at The Ridge located at 319 Exchange Drive in Laurens… The coast of the annual membership is only $150 which gets you one ticket to all 7 of the regular meetings and one ticket to the Annual awards banquet… To see the flyer that the TD Club has put out that contains more information about the meetings, click here…To join or if you have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 833-2716 or at mowings@laurenscounty.org… Partial videos of the TD Club meeting featuring any awards handed out and what the local coaches had to say at the meeting (as well as guest speakers ) will be available a few days to a week after the meetings… To see those videos, click here… All the meetings except the 11-17-22 video are available at the previous link… The next meeting will be their Annual Awards Banquet on 12-7-22 at The Ridge where South Carolina state Football Coach Buddy Pugh will be the guest speaker.
