Local Notes:

Clinton HS

  • Clinton 49 – Chapman 27… The Red Devil football team punched their ticket to the Upper State Finals last Friday night by defeating the Chapman Panthers for a second time this season this time by a score of 49-27… The panther led 14-7 with 10:19 left in the first half but the Red Devils then got serious as they reeled off 19 unanswered points to take a 26-14 lead at the half and them scored 20 more unanswered points to start the second half to take a 46-14 lead with 11:04 left in the game before the Panthers scored again with 10:11 left in the game as the Red Devils rolled on to the 49-27 win… Bryson James scored the first 3 Red Devil touchdowns rushing and had a total of 4 TDs on the night and led the Red Devils with 151 yds. of their total 460 yds. rushing… Jayden Robinson was also over 100 yds. rushing with 146 yds. and 1 TD while Jishun Copeland finished with 132 yds. rushing and 2 TDs. One of which made every highlight reel on local TV stations… The Red Devils finished with 595 yds. of total offense to the Panthers 298… To see the complete stat package on the game as well as a play-by-play accounting of the game click here… The Red Devils will travel to Powdersville this Friday to take on the patriots who defeated Daniel 36-35… More about that as the week goes on…  Go Big Red!
  • Lady Devil Invitational Starts Today... The Lady Red Devil basketball team will tipoff its season today as they host the Lady Devil Invitational… The action will start at 6:00 pm when Palmetto and Newberry take to the court followed by Brashier Middle College and Clinton facing off against each other about 7:30… Tonight’s losers will play tomorrow at 6:00 pm and the winners about 7:30… Go out and support the lady Red Devils if you can… Go Big Red!

Laurens HS

  • Girls Basketball: Cardinals 46 – Raiders 33… The Lady Raider opened up their basketball season under new Head Coach Michael Cade last Saturday participating in the 2022 Coach Varner Tipoff Classic at Woodruff HS taking on the Landrum Cardinals… I wish I had better news to report as the Cardinals took a 46-33 win over the Raiders…. The Cardinals led 9-7 at the end of the first quarter and 19-16 at the half and then went on to take the win… There were just too many turnovers for the Raiders and they only went 4 for 10 from the free-throw line while the Cardinals went 7 for 9…. The Cardinals had 3 players scoring in double-digits with 2 of them scoring 13 points each… The Raiders were led by Faith Jackson and Zoe Young who had 8 points each… Dayzhia Grant finished with 7 points, Akacia Smith 4 and scoring 2 points each were Shanayi Chinn, MyAngel Walker and Destiny Anderson.
    Up Next for the Girls… The team will be back in action as they continue their play in the Varner Tipoff Classic taking on the Broome Centurions tonight at 6:00 pm at the Woodruff Activity Center… The Center is not too far down the road from Woodruff HS on the left and is located at 176 Lucy P Edwards Rd., Woodruff, SC 29388… To see the entire tournament bracket click here.
  • Raider Boys Open Season Today… The Raider boys’ basketball team will open their season today under new Head Coach Armond Flood this afternoon at 4:00 pm as they start their participation in the 2022 Impact Sports Invitational @ Spartanburg Christian Academy… They will be taking on the Seneca Bobcats… If you would like to see the tournament bracket, click here… If you would like to follow the Raiders the address for the school’s gym is 8740 Asheville Hwy, Spartanburg, SC 29316… Good Luck to the Raiders!
  • Raider Boys Basketball Hosting Tip Off Fundraiser Dinner… The Raider Boys Basketball team will host a fundraising dinner on November 27th at 4:00 pm… This event will be held at The Ballroom which is located at 241 S. Harper Street Ext. in Laurens… The cost per person is $50 or for a table of 8 is $350… The guest speaker will be Devon Smith, author of the book “How a Roundball Shaped My Life”, and a catered meal will be included… All proceeds from this event will help offset the costs of uniforms, equipment, and travel for the boys’ basketball team… Contact Coach Armond Flood at apflood@laurens55.org for more information… Click here to purchase your tickets for this event.

Laurens Academy Friday night the Laurens Academy Crusader varsity basketball teams traveled up to Spartanburg to take on the Griffins of Spartanburg Day School.

  • Girls: Griffins 39 – Crusaders 31… In girls’ action, the Crusaders lost a heartbreaker as the Griffins came back to take a 39-31 win… The Crusader led 11-7 at the end of the first quarter but the Griffins came back to tie the game 17-17 going into the locker room at the half… Going into the fourth quarter the Crusaders 26-23… That is where the Crusader offense went cold and the Griffins got hot as they outscored the Crusaders 16-5 in the final 8 minutes to take a 39-31 win…. Olivia Huck led all scorers with 13 points, 7 of them coming in the 4th quarter… Rylee Ballard was also in double-digits with 12 points… Emily Suttles had 4 points and Hanna Ervin 2.
  • Boys: Griffins 63 – Crusaders 35… In boys’ action, the Griffins took a 63-35 win over the Crusaders outscoring them 29-7 in the first half… This was a good test for the Crusaders as the Griffins have a strong team coached by former PC Coach Gregg Nibert… The Griffins had 3 players scoring in double-digits with Caleb Baker having a game-high 16 points… Braydon Burke and Buddy Baker led the Crusaders with 11 points each… Hector Rubio scored 7 points, Jared Willard 2 and Clarence Bertoli 1.
  • Up Next… The Crusader varsity teams are scheduled to be in action tonight as they host the Oakbrook Prep Knights with the girls’ game starting at 6:30 pm and the boys about 7:30… Good Luck to the Crusaders.

Football

  • College Playoff Rankings… The College Playoff Rankins were updated Tuesday (11-15-22)… The top 4 are the same as they were when the initial rankings came out and are all undefeated…they are in order from 1-4 are Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee is still #5 but LSU has moved up a spot to #6 and former #6 Oregon has dropped all the way to #12… Clemson moved up a spot from #10 to #9… To see the entirety of this ranking click here.
  • FBS AP Top 25… In the latest AP Poll for DI College Football had one change in the top 5 compared to last week… The top 4 are still Georgia, Ohio State, Michigan and TCU… Tennessee last week’s #5 dropped to #9 after losing to the Gamecocks Saturday night and Southern California has moved up to #5… Clemson did move up from #9 to #7 thanks to the Gamecocks… To see the entire poll click here.

This & That:

 Laurens County Touchdown Club… Once again this football season the Laurens County TD Club will be meeting every other Thursday at noon at The Ridge located at 319 Exchange Drive in Laurens… The coast of the annual membership is only $150 which gets you one ticket to all 7 of the regular meetings and one ticket to the Annual awards banquet… To see the flyer that the TD Club has put out that contains more information about the meetings, click here…To join or if you have questions, contact Marlene Owings at 833-2716 or at mowings@laurenscounty.org… Partial videos of the TD Club meeting featuring any awards handed out and what the local coaches had to say at the meeting (as well as guest speakers ) will be available a few days to a week after the meetings… To see those videos click here… All the meetings except the 11-17-22 video are available at the previous link… The next meeting will be their Annual Awards Banquet on 12-7-22 at The Ridge where South Carolina State Football Coach Buddy Pugh will be the guest speaker.
